- ironeus, on 08/05/2008, -1/+71Agreed. Games are definitely not a scapegoat. Hardcore gamers probably commit less crime as they occupy their time by... gaming.
- lukemorris, on 08/05/2008, -2/+36Nothing but a witch hunt.
- ConfusedCartman, on 08/05/2008, -1/+31Every new thing in each generation has been a scapegoat for society's problems. Rock music used to be that scapegoat when it was first surfacing, and now that video games are becoming mainstream people are looking at it as the cause for the problems in today's world. As in any good medium, these attacks usually die down after people realize they have no merit. Until then, we just have to keep playing the games we want to play and tune out the idiots.
- Shogi, on 08/05/2008, -1/+29The real problem here is negligent parents and kids who are already ***** in the head.
Oh and witch hunting tight ass conservatives. - DonCreech, on 08/05/2008, -1/+28I blame the number 4. And to a slightly lesser extent the color yellow.
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -23/+46I blame religion.
- diggymow, on 08/05/2008, -0/+22Sorry, but I refuse to believe that the number 4 can be the scapegoat for all of our problems. Call me a number 4 apologist or just another numberist hack, but it's true. Why should the number industry be blamed for the problems all of humanity faces?
Also ***** yellow. That ***** broke up my marriage. - Apocalyptic0n3, on 08/05/2008, -1/+23Completely agree here. Games shouldn't be blamed for something like this. The kid had problems. Did they take a look at the parents? Was he neglected? Abused?
Why is it that GTA is automatically blamed for things today? It's not like we didn't have gang violence and shootings and stuff before GTA was released, right? Nope. It all started the second GTA started getting played by millions and millions of people. Now every drive-by I hear about (I live about 10 miles from Detroit so I hear about a lot) is somehow related back to Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City, etc. by the media as a way to say "the kid thought Detroit was San Andreas and people randomly dying was a normal part of life that he should partake in." *****. The kid had unexplainable rage likely related to the high rate of gang violence in the area (hell, there are stores/restaurants here that won't let people in that wear a solid colored shirt anymore) and acted on it.
I also liked how in the article they made mention of movies. The most popular movie right now and one of the most successful films of all time is a great example. The main character (I'm sorry, Batman isn't the main character of the film) goes around giving people a Glasgow Smile. He blows up Hospitals and cars, shoots public officials, kills a guy by having him drink acid, and leads to a guy's girlfriend/fiance dying and half of his face being burned off. On top of that, one of the most memorable and most quoted scenes from the movie involves said character shoving a pencil through a guy's head as a "magic trick."
Now why, why is it that video games still get blamed for stuff when the most popular movie of the last decade is this violent and twisted? Because we can play it? Hah. That doesn't explain why this violence has existed since the dawn of man and why it will continue to exist even after video games are over with. - SirZRX, on 08/05/2008, -0/+21why? i always fight the bad guys in the video games
- Codename, on 08/05/2008, -1/+18Yeah, I mean look at most movies today, they are never the blame, and I'll tell you why their not the blame, it's because a lot more people like movies (older, younger, parents, housewifes) so people think since the movie industry have pumping out movies for decades and nothing like this has happened, they blame video games, and in that case, video games are the scapegoat.
- UnleashX, on 08/05/2008, -1/+16I rob banks to fund my WoW addiction!
- RavenKing, on 08/05/2008, -0/+13I wonder what video game Hitler played?
- cjung89, on 08/05/2008, -0/+11Actually games are a scapegoat. That's the problem. (Look up scapegoat)
- gllopc, on 08/05/2008, -0/+9I blame irresponsible parenting, poor education, and a lack of any true role models.
- BXRWXR, on 08/05/2008, -0/+9Duh, everyone knows it's Judas Priest albums.
- roebeet, on 08/05/2008, -0/+8RISK
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7Because it's easier to say "He was influenced by Grand Theft Auto" than it is to say "He was a psychotic nut job, who was abused as a child until one day after he saw his mother get beaten by his father for the 7th time, he finally snapped and carved his head off slowly and then turned his attention to his mother and two sisters"
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7Forward this to Jack Thompson
- beatoven, on 08/05/2008, -1/+7Humanity can be blamed for all our gaming problems.
- life38, on 08/05/2008, -2/+8Let's see, too much of anything usually causes a bad outcome. Video games are now just another misused object that does cause harm to those whom do not balance the rest of life with this obsession.
- wildsnake, on 08/05/2008, -3/+9It's true. normal people don't use objects for an excuse. Everything is the devil for religious fanatics.
- wildsnake, on 08/05/2008, -0/+6So people were angels and life was good before video games?
- digiguy, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5He played bend over and pick up the soap when he was in prison
- GoonPowerX, on 08/05/2008, -0/+6***** that. Two of my friends died when they were shown a yellow 4.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Regardless of what you believe about human-induced global climate change, you're trying to compare two completely unrelated subjects. One deals with _physical_ influence of humanity as a whole; the other deals with the _psychological_ influence of a given cultural phenomenon. Statements like yours always remind me of this Douglas Adams quote:
"The idea of [Dirk Gently] actually having friends as such seemed not so much unlikely, more a sort of mismatching of concepts, like the idea of the Suez crisis popping out for a bun."
That's exactly what your statement is: the mismatching of concepts. - o0joshua0o, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5It's that evil Rock n' Roll that's causing this. It's the Devil's music!
- galvo, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5I made this argument in at least three papers for English class over the course of five years. I laugh at the opposition: Jack Thompson.
- Kenzan, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Just a thought, but maybe if parents invested more time in their children's lives?
- Stiles05s, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Anyone who has ever played video games already knew this.
- Palaceguard, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4It all started with pong. That's when society went down
- thursdayevryday, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Sorry, but I refuse to believe that roman numerals can be the scapegoat for your dog's death. Call me a roman numeral apologist or just another numeralist hack, but it's true. Why should the archaic numeral industry be blamed for the problems you dog faced?
Also ***** laserdiscs. That ***** gave me skin cancer. - inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Hey, look on the bright side: at least they're not burning books anymore.
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Why are video games constantly targeted for a multitude of problems in the media It's simple:
The Video Game Industry has no champions.
Every industry that has come under attack by pundits and jackasses - and come out better for it - has had some kind of champion defending it. Video Games have no such figure. - yaryarhumphump, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Bravo good sir bravo...
- Murdats, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4virtual reality, ultra porn, going outside.
- Ljay90, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4I blame video games for your ***** parenting.
/sarcasm - ScionX, on 08/05/2008, -2/+5*starts slow clap*
- FriedTurkey, on 08/05/2008, -1/+4Yeah if we get rid of religion I am sure there would be no more wars.
Even wars that are over religion really are overly simplified to be just about religion by dip *****. If you look at the troubles in Ireland, it was really more complicated than fighting over religion. - KaiUno, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Next up, aliens!
- TRScheel, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Virtual reality
Once the pr0n people get their hands on that, we might never reproduce again - InnerGalbladder, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Here here.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3At most they'll go on a massive griefing spree online -.-
- n3demonic, on 08/05/2008, -1/+4Sorry, but I refuse to believe that the color yellow can be the scapegoat for your marriage problem. Call me a color yellow apologist or just another colorist hack, but it's true. Why should the color industry be blamed for the problems your marriage faced?
Also ***** roman numerals. That ***** killed my dog. - iamthearm, on 08/05/2008, -2/+5Religion, for sure! It's no concidence that we are a religious country and religion loves violence and hates sex. You see it everywhere in America. I also think it's bad parenting but that also has to do with religion. tykwondingo has it right.
- digiguy, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Everything is blamed on myspace and videogames. So we had a perfect world before, right?
- MxM111, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3You are assuming that video games ARE the cause, which is really questionable. If a men is ***** up in the head, then video game is just side effect, similar to knife (or gun) that he used for killing the taxi driver. So, should we blame everything on knifes? Of may be on taxis because they are in the game and yellow?
- Gee1004, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3For one, if you are going to blame video games, then you should blame TV, Music, computers, movies, pencils, pens, knives, guns etc. Because everything else is responsible except yourself. If you can't tell the difference between a video game or a cartoon and reality, then you need help. People are different and some people react to certain stimuli different. That's it. People shouldn't force their ***** values on someone else.
- Antaries, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Well if video games make people into criminals then, I blame the game hide and go seek for making people into stalkers. Red rover for making burglars. Tag for making sex offenders.
See how stupid that sounds? It's not games that are doing this. It's peoples stupidity. People are not responsible for there actions anymore. Why should they be when it is so easy to blame the stupid things they do on games, tv, music, or whatever else they can think of. - deaftly, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Its that damn rap music's fault.
*shakes fist* - lutiana, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3O, and don't forget that Batman was rated PG13 wheras GTA IV is rate M (17+)
