- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32That's awesome.
I'm sure people will scream "OMG BIG BROTHER" but I think it's pretty cool. - Wilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27The G-Man is watching.
- moondog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Reduce zombies...more ammo...ha...beat it like a real man. CROWBAR!
- Erroneus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Indeed very cool, makes the game better and actually the use similar statistics on the other games and the steam client to analyze problems, which normally would be impossible to find.
- scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15If there's one thing I hate about games, it's going back and playing the same thing over and over again. If you don't want to quicksave, feel free to turn in off.
Also, some of us work for a living / have significant others. When my girlfriend calls from the bedroom, I much prefer a quicksave to take care of business rather than "Wait until I get to the next checkpoint!!!" - DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Murdate: You're totally wrong. Half-Life 2 had a LOT of material that was cut from it in order to make the game flow better. The game engine is something they simply never stopped working on.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12What is wrong with quicksave?
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Oh my god, this is worse than WGA phoning home everyday and Mac OS X Widgets validating for updates. How terrible. I cannot believe it.
(Sarcasm Ends) - PunishedOne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Would you rather have a half-assed checkpoint system?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Yeah I died a few times, but the point of playin video games is to overcome obstacles. Sometimes hard ones. HL gives to you choice of quick saving the game so you don't haver to start over. Therefore, overcoming the hard spot should not be that hard to do, unless the player is moving the mouse with their anal cavity.
Or not. - rebe01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@moondog
In that portion of the game, you don't have the crowbar. Otherwise, it would have been a lot easier! - WermerSkoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That was my favorite part of episode 1, precisely for the reason they changed it -- it was insanely frantic. I was running around non-stop using my muzzle flashes as light, because my flashlight kept going out. And when the elevator finally DID get there, I booked it in there, heard Alyx slam the gate, and saw hoards of zombies clamoring to get in. I thought it was friggin' awesome. While I think what they're doing is pretty cool, I hope it doesn't take away those moments when you say "holy crap! I can't believe I made it through that!"
- skirkybaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5To be honest... I was originally a non believer in the whole Steam thing.. drove me nut's initially. But now that most of the problems are sorted, and even the Friends list works; I'm much more pleased with it.. and to date own the majority of steam games available, plus plenty of mods.
My one complaint is that my steam folder is now 29.6GB big.. which is a lot to move around on a rebuild! So yeah Kudos to Valve once again for the whole statistics thing.. more functionality is always a winner, I care not for the monitoring of me if they are all about making it better. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Day of Defeat: Source is free this weekend, by the way.
- skresal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here are the episode 1 statistics Valve is using. Some cool data here.
- Avg deaths per map (broken down by difficulty setting).
- Avg minutes to completion.
- Total play time.
http://www.steampowered.com/stats/ep1/ - Batiu-Drami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4your flashlight lasts much longer than it did in HL2, and it's part of the challenge - managing it so that you can always have it when you need it.
I also thought it was cool when Alyx tried to scare you while your flashlight was recharging. That was awesome. - pufuwozu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Brilliant, it took me a few goes to get past that scene, mostly because I kept blowing myself up with the flammable canisters.
Good to see that the amount of zombies has been reduced, they seemed to never end. - darkzealot89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The Ship looks like it will use the source engine in a new amazing way!
And dont forget the sin episodes, they didnt pretty well with it too - nwfisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I remember clearing that area with a bare 4 health remaining...
It was difficult, but the scene really immersed me in the game itself - and was definitely one of the more memorable scenes.
Watching one of those zombies come at the elevator as the door slid shut, after a fierce and terrifying battle with a mere 4 health remaining, hoping that the door would close in time was definitely one of the best gaming moments I've seen in recent memory.
Too bad they made it easier - that IS what quicksave is for. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Well, I didnt like steam. The reason was not everyone has a fast and unlimited connection. Try downloading that entire thing on a 56k dialup. You will know why people hate it. Worse still, remember allthough net is pretty much everywhere these days the no. of pc with net is no where near 100%.
Back to the topic, oh yeah. This is a super cool thing to do :) . Hopefully other game devs will also follow suite. Perhaps hardcore gamers wont like it, but certainly it will help a majority of the players. - Steel_Blue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Man, if they were concentrating on just the engine... I think they messed up.
- zumpiez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok, then don't push the quicksave button. How hard is that?
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5If you're using 56k you 1) probably aren't really serious about gaming and probably can't run it anyway and 2) should've bought the game in the store
and Steam has nothing to do with people lagging 'cause they're using backwards technology. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Perhaps they should look into something that auto adjusts the difficulty? The elevator fight was definitely one of the harder ones, but it was memorable for that. If it weren't so hard, I'm sure I wouldn't even remember it.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think they'll be left in on 'hard' difficulty - Valve did this because they noticed many people gave up on the game at this point, but on hard the worst case is a user will have to switch to medium.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Despite the random boot kicks because of a certain Steam glitch, I still love the system for what it brings to gaming. In addition to analyzing games so that Valve can make them better, Steam allows for indy devs to bring their products to the masses. Very cool.
- marix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason why they did this is simple, The more people who make it through ep1, the more people they can sell ep2 to. It sounds perfectly fine to me and more power to them.
- timmage89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow that is a really good idea. I, and I'm sure a lot of other people, agree with skirkybaby. At first I though steam was the dumbest idea, but now I realize it makes gaming a lot funner and easier. This "stats system" being one of the many examples.
- mcottier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They also need to increase the amount of time your flashlight stays on, that was the main reason it was so hard, you couldn't see a damn thing! Also, Alyx did die on me twice.
There "Zombines", get it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Try downloading that entire thing on a 56k dialup. You will know why people hate it.
try playing with someone on dialup. you will know why people hate it. - mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They mention this in the commentary track but I had no idea that it was this useful or that it was this extensive.
- jihadjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that part only took me three tries, but i think the bigger point is that VALVE is reacting to it users, not just ignoring them. And thats pretty cool if you ask me...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yea, I hated that part. I actually despise those pitch-black scenarios, so I turned on God-mode, defended Alyx, then finished the level until becoming mortal again.
I actually enjoyed Ravenholm more, simply because it was better lit and you could plan your attacks better. - blueblood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah thats true and its rare for a company to do that. specially for a FPS title.
- DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Here's a link to the actual News Item: http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news&id=681
It looks like the biggest change was in adding more ammunition. - lava, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5well, what if I want a challenge though? Beating something that's hard is satisfying.
- blueblood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah that was one of the best parts of the game. why valve why!
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"...When my girlfriend calls from the bedroom..."
No! I'm playing video games; you get up and get the remote this time.
Oh, wait... - Fr33m4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then they should also add an ultra hard option because the hard option is already too easy. If they make it any easier then it would just be boring.
- 4degrees, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hrm... i didnt have any trouble with that elevator battle, i thought it was kinda fun!
- Kent767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What bothered me was that I couldn't play single player after i recently moved until I got my Internet access back. I looked through all the help files on my machine and registry keys etc, but couldn't find a way to play offline. I'm sure there was a way to do it, but simply checking the "offline mode" box wasn't enough. It was very frustrating to pay for a game that I was then being denied the ability to play.
- Ansible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was friggin hard to me. I played through EP 1 on hard difficulty level, and this part had me replaying it like 25 times to finally make it through. I thought it was a lot harder than the rest of the game. I would have backed off to normal, but I thought regular HL2 was too easy on normal, and then hard wasn't so hard either once I knew what was coming up. So I wanted to play through on hard before I knew what all the secrets were.
Sometimes the HL2 combats can seem like puzzles, for the elevator battle I think I finally decided to stack all the flammable stuff near the elevator before going to turn on the power. Then I figured out that I didn't really need to protect alyx from the grenades, so running away from the granade guys became an option. What was cool was when I was headed up in the elevator (with like 4 health), and all the zombies were clustered below at the gate, my cache of flammable stuff all went up at once.
For ep 2 I hope they finally let us mix it up with the amputee guys, can't remember what they're called. We've been able to see them only from a distance in HL2 and EP1, it makes me wonder if they will be a special treat in combat. - Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You don't get the crowbar until later in the game ... if you were trying to use it, that might've been why you had trouble. ;)
- blueblood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@flyinglikeakite
anything will download slow on 56k not just steam. ands its not valves fault anyone still has dial up - zitterbewegung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I really didn't notice that that battle needed more balance. Maybe I should have tried it on a harder difficulty setting? I was playing it on normal or something.
- smedstadc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was actually disappointed that they made the elevator battle easier. It was my favorite part of the game! It was a tough battle with tense atmosphere and oh boy did the darkness make it scary to fight in. I'm afraid I'll be lacking that feeling if I play through with the updates.
- GreatGrizzly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are called stalkers. I was pissed that I couldnt actually fight them.
- DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think they could've just cut down on the number of Grenade Zombies. It was pretty manageable except for those guys bum-rushing you and blowing the hell up. I just let Alyx take the brunt of the blast when those things came out.
- mattybyrnes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Valve concentrates so much on gameplay and so little on content. It's refreshing to see a game developer reinventing themselves as often as Valve manages to do.
