- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+70Sometimes I love Steam - auto updates my games. Other times, when I just want to play gmod single player...
- nadadingsda, on 10/12/2007, -7/+59Right now, I hate steam
- benadamson, on 10/12/2007, -21/+57It's called "Offline Mode" smarty pants.
By the way, Am I the only one that gets pleasure out of Valve's problems?
I laughed when I saw this. Screw Valve for screwing their customers. - tibby.dude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37So they kept all their logon servers in ONE location in Seattle ... talk about stupid retarded planning for a disaster.
- InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28Playing offline is not an option if you decide to re-install a "Steamed" game several years from now and Steam has either gone away or become incompatible with the next gen of Steam servers. A Steamed game will not load until it gets permission from Steam. Plus, if you decide to set up a server online without Steam, you're screwed.
In addition, it's because of Steam that your games are going to get spammed with advertisement in the near future. - poprhythm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22@ InetRoadkill - Steam is nice in that it provides very low maintenance content distribution for games and game updates. Kind of like what iTunes does for podcasts. It does suck when the DRM disables you from playing the stuff that you paid for, for sure. I was recently at a lan party and the internet went down - no more Counter Strike that night.
- Moebaca, on 10/12/2007, -11/+27I need my counterstrike fix!! Im going crazy...
- elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"Steam = spyware"
How the...? No it's not, you idiot! - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14 Perhaps the use some of the money they will make off the in-game ads to buy a back up generator or two.
- InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -40/+52Steam equals spyware and DRM. I really don't understand why people love Steam. It provides nothing that wasn't available thru less invasive means.
This power outage shows what will happen to thousands of gamers should Valve ever decides to pull the plug on Steam. - jaymulder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12its cold outside...hence the storm....
- ray4389, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Source Forts is where it's at ;)
- BlueZinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Anyone else find it ironic that "Steam" can't run without electricity?
- junk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@inetRoadkill
I'll be playing Team Fortress 2 as soon as it's released through Steam. When will you be playing it? Oh, that's right, you won't.
I've never begrudged Valve for scrapping a ***** game and starting over. I wish more studios had as much integrity. - xaryss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9damn, I was hoping to play some CS:Source when I get home from work.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10how do u activate offline mode in steam?
- freebirdpat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12When I start up Steam.... I get a login screen. No offer for "offline mode" or anything. It asks for a password to my account and won't let me go further.
This is a classic non-intuitive interface, I should be able to play my games, even in offline mode, but it won't let me.
First person that has a solution to this problem can talk praises about offline mode, till then offline mode in Steam is poorly planned and constructed. - Kamisado, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Grrr, I just got my computer fixed after 4 months of the manufacturer trying to fix the ***** thing, now steams down. Great.
Even though the link is now dead as well, I think its front page worthy just to inform people. - CandidateZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Then perhaps they should consider steam-powered servers! *pa-dum-ching*
- junk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14@inetroadkill
"Playing offline is not an option if you decide to re-install a "Steamed" game several years from now and Steam has either gone away or become incompatible with the next gen of Steam servers."
That is total *****. Valve have repeatedly stated that if they ever take Steam offline permanently they will make the ability to unlock all the games available. - TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13well you could all just use hacked versions
- scotty588, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Page is loading slow. Heres a screenshot http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/875/steamwb3.jpg
- Epicureous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Offline mode is available only if you login to steam once and save your login info so it automatically logs back in. Unfortunately for most of us, when we logged in today, we were treated to the server connection problem and our login info was automatically erased. Upon disconnecting the computer from the internet(both by disabling the network connection, and by physically pulling the plug), offline mode would not work as our last attempt into logging in was a failure(because of the server problems).
- cragga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8chiming in on the steam hate here...
its entirely murder for dialup users, getting half-life single player running took hours upon hours... and then it forces you to download updates you dont want, refuses to let you play your game until the update is done, i mean, cant you just store it somewhere and apply it once its downloaded (OH HELL NO says valve).
often id decide to play a game of something, either lan or single player, and valve would tell my my ticket expired and i should connect to steam if i want to play, and then id connect and they would force some update on me, and then i couldnt play for another 6 odd hours.
of course now that im on broadband... its similarly annoying except it downloads faster. woop de freaking doo.
what possible reason could someone have for not letting me play the damn game i paid $80AUD for at the goddamn store... thats right... no good reason. ***** DRM. - Razor04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Haven't you guys ever heard of a thing called redundancy? There is no way this should have happened. Sure it only takes one piece of the chain to break the service but to run something like an authorization server and not have service guarantees with the different providers is asking for trouble.
I think it was very short-sighted on Valves part to have all their eggs in one basket. It also shows why I think Steam is a horrible idea. It is a great idea for online play and keeping your game up to date but when all you want to do is play your game that you bought in a store it sucks. I want to play some HL2 tonight but I can't cause I can't connect to Steam so now the game I bought at paid for doesn't work. DRM can kiss my ass! - cr125er, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Oh please, Steam is a great way for me to keep all my games organized and updated. I find out a lot about new indie games I would never find out about otherwise. I just bought RoboBlitz and I'm lovin' it. All of the hassle free updates and great games I've played for YEARS make up for a couple hours of downtime. $50 bucks for Half-Life 2 was the greatest game purchase I ever made on Steam. I am STILL reaping the rewards thanks to that purchase and all the extras that came along with it. LMAO at everyone jumping on the hate bandwagon when they see Valve's service go down. ***** happens, name me one service that never goes down. Ever.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Uh... ya, don't bother with the hacked versions... not that I tried them or anything..
- kerryhall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The storm was crazy! I have never seen rain like that, even living in the rainy city. It was seriously like someone pouring a bucket of water down every square foot.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6". . .and you cant do anything at all!"
I guess that would suck if Counter-Strike was the only game in existence. Seriously, you guys can't think of another game you can all play? Yeesh... - jaymulder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The verdict is that the cables have snapped. So I'm guessing it will take a couple of days.
- digguser345gg5g, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Jesus ***** christ. I've had a bottle of wine, and I REALLY need to kill someone (virtually, of course). Bollocks
- cearum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I know that you can use offline mode, but for most people offline mode isn't enabled. That's something you have to do yourself, and to do that you need to be online. Therefore I can't play HL2 like I wanted too. This is the first time I felt like playing a game for about 5 months and now the game I wanted to play isn't available. So you can take all of those comments about using offline mode and shove it.
- pras128, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The idea steam had of integrating and delivering games directly to the consumer bypassing the middle man was pretty smart. It's a great deal for Steam, it doesn't do jack ***** for customers though.
So while Steam makes money, and can control who can play their game, customers get screwed when crap like this happens.
Seeing how Steam has been around for 3 years or so (Source: wikipedia), I think it's safe to say that it's an average utility at best. Friends didn't start working until recently, servers didn't properly show at one point or another, including other problems. CS'ers were (are) better off with the WonID system, it wasn't perfect but it still isn't as bad as steam.
Some problems are acceptable, but Steam from the start has just seemed half-assed. I don't know of any spy-ware in steam, just a ***** load of advertisements that I have no interest in.
I'll probably go back to being a CS sheep when the servers are back up, I just had my moment of sanity. - pauleku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@dustin
Dude WOW is an internet-only game. Half-life 2 IS NOT. Many of the games that use Steam are NOT internet-only games. Many of them - if not the magority of them - are single-player offline games bought or downloaded from Steam.
I dont have a problem downloading from Steam, i just shouldnt be forced to use my internet connection - it shouldnt even be a figure in the equation aside from downloading (the game) initially. - TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Right now im living near Valve, and I can tell you over 1 million people are ***** out of power right now. I don't happen to be one of them, but every city surrounding mine is...
- alexvalentine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Are you guys nuts? -3 diggs? Any enterprise data center is going to have enough backup generator capacity to take care a long term outage. Valve hating? I dont even play FPS games, why would I hate Valve. I'm not a gamer, I'm a sysadmin.
This is just common sense. Any major enterprise production service implemented correctly is going to envolve redundancy and backup measures at every level. The company I work for deals with a critical internet service(DNS). We have on-site power capabilities to last for months at the system level and the connection level, with a geographically seperate backup site that can go live in less than an hour. This isn't hard to grasp, its disaster recovery 101. - grinin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm glad we have STEAM to try and prevent as much HACKING as possible... but a lot of the times, the hacks beat the updates... the updates screw up the games... and then something like this happens where there is no redundancy and I just cringe to think about all the money they generate and nothing gets done.
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The hate-wagon is rediculous. When Steam is working, it is simply the greatest way of games and content distribution. It's down due to a natural disaster occuring in the west.
I woke up this morning and had wanted to play just as much as anyone else wanted to, but once I heard what had happened, I had this thing called restraint and understanding which told me, "hey, bad things are happening out there, maybe I'll go do something else instead"
Everyones bitching about Steam, but its great because its more profitable for developers, provides access and updates for many games, allows for multiplayer and friends list across multiple games, and introduces us to games you'd never see in retail stores but are still amazing.
Spyware? There is none, they record system specs, every damn game publisher/developer out there does the same thing. Advertisements? They can be shutdown and aren't required if you own the game.
Seriously, relax people. - konspence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yep. Every school in the area is closed. Check out http://schoolreport.org
I'm lucky to have power here. - pauleku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6point being that you shouldnt need an internet connection at all to play this game. That itself is a load of crap and a stupid requirement.
- cearum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some people don't have a choice where they are and what they have access to. Back home my parents have dialup, that's the only choice they have verizon sucks too much to put up dsl and cable doesn't go out that far. So, when I go home every once in a while I have to suck it up and use it. You can't blame him if he doesn't have a choice. Sometimes you just need to think things through for a little bit and don't be such and ass.
- bytor7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. It was only hours after I submitted the story that I saw the full extent of the damage on the news. After seeing what happened, not being able to play HL2 Deathmatch on a long weekend doesn't seem too important.
- mikesown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm a bit shocked by this. I never use steam, nor do I own any steam games, but aren't most data centers supposed to have at least 2d-3d of backup fuel on hand with more available within hours? This really shouldn't be happening at any datacenter.
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is a end-user issue if we can't play the game we own.
- Echoes1313, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Uh, yeah maybe because this is primarily a technology-focused website. Go to CNN for news on the whole west coast.
- NateB2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At our house in Portland, 2 fir trees fell in our backyard, one of them knocked over the power pole. We now have a transformer sitting in our yard, along with the top half of the power pole. One of the trees barely missed our house, but another tree stopped its fall. Our utility company said it would be at least another day before power would be restored.
- Abyss_908, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4People need their CSS. If the dynamic pricing pissed off the fan base imagine what not being able to play it at all would do.
- MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm steamed
- HavocStyles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The reason why is not because of the storm but ELI had a fiber cut in the Seattle area, most traffic is now being re-routed to California... This is impacting not only Valve but most people in Washington, and Oregon..
- bytor7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No harm done. I realized it soon after I submitted the story and kicked myself. Too little too late sometimes.
