- sobriquet, on 10/12/2007, -13/+115I don't mind the in game ads, so long as there's some benefit to gamers.
Drop the price of the game, or throw us some new weapons (or vehicles) every few weeks and I won't complain. I don't like the idea of the BF2142 ads, but they really aren't intrusive.
It's when it becomes putting ads in because "there's nothing gamers can do about it" that I have an issue. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+78Kinda lame, but just like ads on the internet and TV...I will ignore them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+62Ads will _not_ be in CZ or CS:S
http://csnation.net/articles.php/interview_231/1/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48The only thing that REALLY bothers me is that Valve is sucking up ad revenue from servers they don't pay for. What I mean is.. Valve doesn't host ANY game servers for CS 1.6 (afaik). Yet the server owners, the people who actually have to pay $30-60+ a month, are forced to display ads in THEIR server, while Valve gets all the money.
To put this into perspective, imagine buying a brand new Corvette. It's your Corvette because you're paying for it. But when you purchased it, Chevy painted parts of the car with advertisements for Coca Cola. Chevy gets paid for the ads while YOU drive YOUR car around, and you get nothing more than a sexy car with ugly decals.
Would you buy a car like that? Of course not.
This is more of an ethics matter than anything. I'm anxiously awaiting a lawsuit against Valve for this. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+50Technically free? How is it 'technically free'? I payed 30 bucks for that game
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -9/+51As long as the Ad's don't interfere with game play, I don't mind. For instance, It would be fine to have an ad while the game is loading or have an ad or two on the blank walls of de_dust. But It would suck to have to watch some stupid commercial which takes up bandwidth and time every time a map is being switched or every time a round is over.
imo - schroduggity, on 10/12/2007, -9/+48personally I think it's *****. you already paid for the game, now you'll have to strain to ignore their marketing crap in your game. sure it's not bad now. just wait till you have popup windows in your FPS. It'll be just like The cable TV BS we just accept.
they should implement 2 versions, a free (ad-supported) version and a pay version sans the ads. - CursorTN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35That's a bunch of crap. This is NOT a way for gamers (like me) to be charged less. In-game ads are a way for game company suits to bring in new revenue streams for shareholders. If you don't believe me, check out the price of Need For Speed Carbon. Has in-game ads. If that's not insulting enough, they also get you with purchasable (via 'points") content that should be free. And it's still the "low-low" price of... $59.99. What a rip off.
***** EA and anyone else who does this crap. - JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Fact: If the ads are a hit in 1.6, and loads of people don't quit it right when they appear, it will only be a matter of time until they hit CZ and Source.
Also, nobody should be supporting this. Valve already updates CS a lot, they put a lot of work into it and I don't see ads increasing their productivity. They already makes loads of money by just selling the game, it's one of the highest selling PC games of all time, they don't need the extra cash from ads. I don't want a Mountain Dew mural on the walls of Dust, I don't want Red Bull banners flashing at me while i'm trying to spectate others, and I don't want Chips Ahoy slapping me in the face every time I want to check the score. - labmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36Valve is a business. Selling out is what they do.
- junk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38I like Morgan Webb's take on in game ads: "Remember kids, if you watch ads... You should get free stuff."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKbEsEGXW04
And since CS is technically free, I don't have a problem with in game ads in CS. But people who bought the standalone game should have the option to turn them off at least. - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28The recoil on the Diet Coke and Mentos gun is deadly.
- Dochtuir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24ads != "lower price"
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23"And since CS is technically free"
Well where do I download it for free? The store says $9.95. Am I missing something? - BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Yea, if I'm paying for the game, then it better not have any ads (unless it's some sort of sports game, where having ads in certain places makes sense...but they should be reasonable). But if it's a free game, then I *suppose* it's ok.
It all depends on the execution though. - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I don't think you guys get the point. I paid full price for Half-Life and I should NOT see ads in ***** Counter-Strike. Valve is double dipping like EA in BF2142: charging us $50 and still having the balls to show us ads.
In-game advertisements are a cancer that need to be stopped. Game devs have shown time and time again that they'll still charge you money and not think twice about selling out to the advertisers. I paid $10/month for PlanetSide and for awhile still had to see Deuce Bigalow ads in our base.
I don't pay for Google or Digg because I see ads. And I don't see ads in TV shows I download because I ***** paid for them. It doesn't work both ways. - Kii666, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20CS has 147,988 players right now, I seriously doubt Battlefield and its sequels are even close to touching that.
So it's obviously not about 'losing ground' or 'struggling to survive'. Valve is just trying to piss off gamers at any chance they can get. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21They're doing this to 1.6 which they've pretty much stopped development on entirely at this point. What bothers me is that Counter-Strike DID NOT have ads in-game when I bought it, however I can't continue to play without updating to a version that has ads in it because the WON system is down and Steam will automatically give me the latest version of CS and won't allow you to play on outdated versions of the game. So, I basically am being denied the use of the software that I already paid for because Valve wants to make an additional buck.
- linuxwarz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22valve:
Leave the versions I paid for years ago alone. If you add adware to my games, you have seen the last dollar out of me. - Xorp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17CS is dying?
http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=stats&cc=--
Look at the statistics by game, CS 1.6 almost never has less than 100,000 players
I still play 1.6 everyday, since Source blows.
I'm sure someone will find a way to block the ads, so it's not a big deal - MikeKnoop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16In source, think about how many locations it would be SUITABLE to put ads...
On the soda machines, currently they had a mock-water bottle ad.
Soda Cans.
On Computer monitors.
On Billboards (office).
Cars models.
Discreet logo on misc. objects, lights.
An advertisement doesn't have to be a giant "Buy a subway sandwich for 4.99!" spray on a wall.
-Mike - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13uh oh
looks like valve has
EA-itous - texx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14If commercials are there so people have to sit though commercials so they don't have to pay $3.99 to watch CSI, or endure banners and pop-ups so they don't have to pay a fee for every web site they vist, why are video game and movie prices not GOING DOWN. More and more "product placement" and the prices are going up?
Are consumers just so conditioned that they expect this kind of treatment without demanding either a decent product or a reduction in price?
This is exactly why I have a PVR (Ubuntu with Myth TV) that filters my TV, Firefox with Adblock and any other filter I can think of to stem the tide. Hell; the phone ads got so bad I pulled the plug on the land line (The DNCL has no teeth to speak of). If a corporation wants to reach me and actually get me interested in the product less intrusion would definitely have me ease up on the blocking efforts.
When the TV premier of Star Trek was shown, the actual program ran 58 min and the with 30 sec of intro, 30 seconds of end credits and 60 seconds of commercials. Desilu studios was actually very concerned about driving away the viewing audience with the 60 seconds of commercials. It keeps getting worse. Take the Simpsons or instance, the intro now begins at the point where Marge is chasing Homer through the garage into the house. Why? Yup; to get another 2 commercials into the show. Back in the early 90's I sent in for a special promotion from Sierra (the game company) and I got a copy of the latest Space Quest ("V" I think) game for $9.99 ($4.99+$5.00 S&H). It was filled with promotions from Sprint. Every time a comm screen was used you'd see the sprint logo, every time a screen was showing something in the back ground yet another sprint logo. That was alright since I got the game for about $20.00 off, which is exactly what the trade off should have been. I even took the time to fill out the survey indicating that I would be very interested in purchasing more games via this method. Unfortunately this never took off.
One of the advertiser groups has even approached some of the big cable companys and Phillips Electronics to find out if it would be cost effective to install a "feature" on future DVR's that would prevent the fast forwarding of commercials unless an additional fee was paid. One of the ABC execs in ad sales told the media that people won't mind if their DVR can no longer fast froward. I do have a DVR from Charter, but it is only filling in as an HD decoder until I can get an HD capable tuner card in my PVR.
As long as consumers just ignore or don't recognize (which I believe is the root of the problem) whats going on this will continue. By virtue of just knowing that sites like Digg exist we tech types as a group are much better equipped and informed to deal with this kind of crap than most other consumers. I have found that once you start pointing out things that we consider obvious to others, their eyes start opening. But until we as consumers can send a collective blow to the bank accounts of Valve or any other company this kind of crap will continue - rejectpenguin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20If you want updates go play ***** source. I and many other gamers who actually play in LEAGUES do not want any changes to 1.6 AT ALL.
This isn't some rpg, this is an fps. It was perfect ever since 1.5 but they had to keep updating useless ***** like the riot shield.
LEAVE 1.6 ALONE! - DontSayFanboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@rejectpenguin
"It was perfect ever since 1.5 but they had to keep updating useless ***** like the riot shield."
I haven't played CS in years, but I just wanted to point out that I've heard players say pretty much exactly the same thing since BETA 4 when I started. BETA 4 was perfect, why'd the have to go and add radar?
Beta 5 was perfect, why'd they have to change the AWP?
and so on. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Coming soon - Adblock for Counter Strike!
- chewycheese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The ads better not be posted out of the spawn area very much...I can handle a few but having them outside of the spawns will get annoying.
"TROUBLE DEFUSING THAT BOMB?? BUY A HOME DEPOT SCREWDRIVER!" - ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Great... orange Vonage ads everywhere... just great. ...
At least i hope they wont be annoying flash animations that will scream "OH MY GOD!.. NO WAAAAAAAAYYYYY..." When you aim at them. - dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Ads will _not_ be in CZ or CS:S
http://csnation.net/articles.php/interview_231/1/"
An anti-ad article at a site that is covered in ads. makes sense. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9fir3ball is right. It would completely undermine VAC. Then again, it seems that Valve doesn't actually care.
- daofma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The entire reason I despise television is advertising.
The biggest problem I had with Burnout 3 was the in-game billboards that were so glaring they detracted from the game.
Ads on the scoreboard? That's ridiculous, that thing fills up so quickly with the amount of people on the server, and they're going to make it even busier? It's because that and the spectator screen are the most viewed screens in the game. If any of them were to get animated, that would kill the purchase.
I don't even like Counter-Strike, I just don't want this to happen to more games in the future. I'm OK with paying $60. I understand that we're paying less for videogames now than we were a few years ago because the nominal price hasn't changed. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No, we're not playing it for free. We have to buy the game, and the servers that we play on a privately financed. All Valve does is lock down the authentication scheme so you can't steal the game and play it without paying them. It's not like WoW where Valve is running the servers that you're playing on. I've run my own servers before, and I can assure you that they are *not* free.
- xdefconx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Counter-Strike already sold out when they sold out to Valve years ago...
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"hasn't Valve maintained and updated this free game for 8 years?"
Well where do I download it for free? The store says $9.95. Am I missing something? - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The problem is that I already paid for CS a few years ago...and it didn't have ads. Are they going to refund my money? I don't think so.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Obviously the dollar out of you wasn't good enough anyway.
- pras128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Valve doesn't host servers, individuals do. So it's kind of retarded to see Valve ads on servers that individuals and clans are paying for.
EA needs to be ***** slapped for coming up with this BS. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10It used to be free as long as you owned a copy of Half-Life. All you had to do was download the mod. I don't know if it's still like that or not though. I never once had to pay for CS.. all I did was bought HL about 6-7 years ago and downloaded CS.
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's not free! Jeez, I bought CS last year for $15. I'd prefer no ads but I don't really care. I just wish people would stop saying it's free, when it's not. I bought CS 1.6 and not HL.
- Ceeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"CS is already struggling"
Sorry but more people still play CS than all the other FPS games combined.
Over all I dont mind ads if the server ops get a piece. Why should they pay to serve ads for valve. - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+7Goodbye counter-strike, welcome capitalism!
Oh wait, it's been around for a long time now.
And Valve is making a decision that any business would. "Hmm, yes, I think I will choose to make money instead of generating no income!" - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah, it's nice how ads lower the price of the game. OH WAIT! I ALREADY PAID FOR IT!!!
And no, they had no plans to put ads in CS back when it was released. By your logic they owe me a partial refund...and I would agree. Though I'd also say that they owe me a full refund if I refuse to agree to the new license and am therefore unable to play the game. - JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7...because it's the most played online game ever, and continually sells many many copies.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5negativenancy: No. If I bought a car in 1990 and am still using it today, should the dealer decide to start making me pay for it again because it's been a good car and I still use it? Heck no! That makes no sense. Many people, like me, paid more than $10-$15 for HL/CS as well.
- Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Then you have my pity, and not because of the ads.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13ads don't ruin a game if done right. If there is a soda machine in the level anyways what harm is it to have it say "Pepsi" instead of "CT Cola"? the same goes for wall posters and billboards. just don't plaster ads everywhere and it should be fine.
- CalZStudios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yea, the last numbers I looked at BF only had 1/4 or 1/5 of the CS population.
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I already payed for my game. That's why I don't want any advertising (in principle). I'm not getting my money back, they're just milking me for more. Although, it's just advertising, so if I boycott all products shown, it screws them. I'll try that.
- autoacat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wouldn't mind in-game ads if they lowered the initial price of the game and there could be a normal price for the game without the ads. But after paying $50, the last thing you want to see is an ad getting in the way of your game.
- RoflcopterFUEL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6im sure somone will figure out a hack of some sort to remove the ads. Much like AIM.
