- burke, on 10/12/2007, -7/+74I don't think you'd be able to fit your Wii into the controller port... unless of course... oh I get it. You have my pity.
- gungaroo22, on 10/12/2007, -10/+34I don't understand why people care so much about graphics. Sure, alot of games have look good, but are they that fun to play? That is the reason the DS is selling much faster than the PSP. I am betting that the Wii will trump the PS3 for the exact same reasons. Lower price, funner games. Graphics are so last gen.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Yeah, who wants to have *fun* when you can look at pretty pictures?
- crawf061, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Gameplay is so hot right now
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22As ignorant statements go, yours is up there. Graphics is no where near done evolving. There will be a day when a human will walk and talk like a human smoothly on the sceen. There will be a day where one cannot tell if they are watching a video or playing a game. Graphics has a long way to go. Not that the current generation of graphics isnt acceptible, but the same could be said of the N64 graphics. They were acceptable.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20What's going to be interesting is the graphics AFTER we reach realistic enviorments.
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Babbelfish translations suck.
Edit:
Btw, why am I the first person to note this? No one seems to be reading the article. (or at least trying to.) - Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26Sadly 2006 becomes more and more like 1984 everyday
- MysticX, on 10/12/2007, -16/+34He´s probably talking about movie playback and that kind of stuff which I don´t need or want in my console.
- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"about as many as there are magazines, previews, hands-on accounts that say it will"
well playing for a short time is MUCH different than using the controller for months.
Remeber how fun light gun games are when you first get them?
I DO think the controller will most likely be really fun to use.....but until I have used it for a while, I will reserve my opinion. Anyone who basis their opinion of the controllers from what someone else said about them (using them for short periods of time no less) really should relax till it comes out. - jonrad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I really got into the original mario. As well as mario 3. Although, I wouldn't really say they looked very realistic.
- pfister_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Game budgets are finite. Money spent on graphics can't be spent on gameplay.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14The best graphics don't win console wars. I'm really shocked Sony didn't learn that. GC and Xbox had better graphics than PS2, didn't help them sell better. PSP, Gamegear, Lynx all had better graphics, didn't help them sell better. Didn't work for Neo Geo or anyone else. At least Nintendo's paying attention.
- Peat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Look at the URL. It's a French to English translation of the site using Babelfish.
- jonrad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13......... (Feel free to use these where applicable)
- pfister_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Actually, he's probably talking about pixel shaders.
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Sadly people can't abstract these days. If it doesn't look like you just ran over a real frog in a Ford Focus - it just isn't Frogger no more.
- Prod1gy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@DavidtheDuke
Once we make realistic graphics, thats it. There's no more. Just like Nintedo's been saying all along, you can only get up to a certain point for graphics, then thats it, you can't get any better. Yeah...you can bring up the polygon count, or squeeze in higher quality textures....but eventually it won't matter anymore. You'll have to concentrate on upgrading something else for next-gen consoles. And thats exactly what Nintendo is doing. - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10ubisoft has to do a lot of things to red steel before i buy it...
-let me control the sword in real time and not use stupid gestures to attack, id rather press a button
-calibrate the pointer to the ***** tv screen so im not pointing at the sensor bar/aimlessly
-increase accuracy levels/receptiveness
im the last person to call nintendo kiddie, but if a game developer wants to include blood they should be able to include a ***** - censorship orr the marketing department shouldnt interfere - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Is there some reason why I can't have good gameplay AND good graphics? Why does everybody act like you can only have one or the other?
- Zipp425, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8what really interesting is the fact that realistic graphics will most likely happen during our life time. Maybe even within the next ten years. Just look at the improvements we've made in the past 10 years.
- YossarianDent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, I kind of noticed that when my eyes started bleeding halfway through the first paragraph. Give me the original, and I'll translate it a lot better.
- YossarianDent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I found the original, so...the excerpts...Engrish-English translation:
If you put a first-gen Playstation game next to a latest-gen Playstation game, visually, they look nothing alike. In the same way that, on PS or Xbox, new graphics libraries come along as the life of the console progresses, one can imagine that Wii will collect, in time, more and more sophisticated methods of movement recognition. In my opinion, seeing the progress that our team made in three or four months, movement detection will be even more intuitive and more powerful in six months-1 year. Right now, it works well, but it's still full of little bugs. You feel like you're obligated to make the movement that will be recognized easiest. But it's going well, and I have a lot of confidence because it's a technology that's really pretty complex to pick up and master. We're only at the beginning.
I'm not allowed to speak in detail about what the Wii can do graphically. What we can tell you is that taking into consideration all that it can do, Wii is more powerful than an Xbox, but there are things that the Xbox knows how to do that Wii doesn't.
We're going to try to be rated "Teen" (in the US) because of all the problems the country's having right now with video games. It's because of this that there won't be blood or dismemberments. These are marketing choices for the US. But at the level of the universe and the scenarios, yes, it will be dark enough.
...I'd translate the rest, but
a) I don't have the time right now, and
b) I'm guessing no one cares since he's both French and talking about the Wii's graphics. - eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Once we make realistic graphics, thats it. There's no more."
What (I think) he meant was that after this stupid "realism" craze is over, graphics will get interesting (ie. artistic) again. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ImTheDarkcyde - i like playing racing games (Rally, F1) and if the better graphics mean better looking environment and realistic car models with alot of polygons then that is something that the previous generation could not do and i think the games benefit from it. So don't go around repeating innovation innovation. I have a 5 year old microsoft sidewinder controller for my pc that had the same motion sensor in it. Give me a break.
- Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Ubisoft is in France. I'm betting you the interview was in french, and then badly translated.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i wasnt *trying* to sound like ive played the game,,but i care a lot about nintendo. just watch this and tell me the game doesnt need a lot of work in terms of control: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gXG0fQRbRaI&search=red%20steel%20e3
- SagiMewtwo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It also sounds like they're going to censor the North American version of Red Steel. If that's true, then count me out on getting it. That feels like Mortal Kombat for the SNES all over again.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yeah I guess it's graphics and not game play that still has me playing my Super Mario Bros and Techmo Bowl ROMs....
Nintendo, do your thing and you will be rich. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Did you not read the headline?
- solarbeat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7>>Who the hell talks like that, honestly?
Uh, people whose first language isn't English? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7We'll both get modded down, but I completely agree. People talk like graphics and gameplay are mutually exclusive, and they'e not. I loved the PS and PS2...the PS3 won't be any different no matter how much people around here want it to fail.
And I really don't like what I've seen out of the Wii. The sound effects in the Mario game are way too kiddie. I don't want to swing my arms to hit the ball in a baseball game...I'd rather just press a button. Congrats on innovating, and maybe I'll be wrong, but the Wii demoes look more gimicky than fun.
Just my opinion, of course. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I'm a huge proponent of XBMC, but honestly, it's not needed on the Wii. And if someone decides that it is, they'll find a way to do it. Nintendo has already said you can buy an add on for the Wii to make it play DVDs, so we know it has the capabilities. If it can do more than the Xbox, it can be programmed to do XBMC, but as I said, it's not really needed.
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"There will be a day where one cannot tell if they are watching a video or playing a game."
And I still won't care. I'm tired of game companies striving for "realistic" games. I want to play a game, not watch a reality simulation. Where's the artistic style now-a-days?
Oh, that's right. It's at Nintendo.
Also, for the games that do benifit from "realism", such as RE 4, current gen graphics are more than enough to create the necessary atmosphere. I don't think a few more pixels or shader effects in that game would have done anything for me. - Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@davidirock - I've been playing games now for close to 20 years now, and let me tell you, graphics ain't all that. You never heard people complaining about not being able to "get into" games because of the graphics on the ataris, NES, Genesis, SNES, various Gameboys, Saturn, N64, Turbo Grafx, NeoGeo, Playstation, Gamecube, etc. I'll take an unrealistic looking game that plays great over one that looks phenominal but plays like crap any day.
- postal21, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12I gave you +1 digg you because I agree.
The Wii will be "revolutionary" and cool. But I am interested in the exciting technological aspects of game-design that will come from the exciting and advanced hardware of the playstation3.
Its way too "PC" to hate on the ps3 right now, and cuddle up with the wii... Its ok to like graphics/sound and then guess what? have a fun game at the same time! If graphics mean nothing to people lets all go back and play our Ataris, I want Oblivion for atari! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Zelda For SNES rocks my sox, i still play it. Goes to show you that graphics mean nothing when you have game play like that. I wish they had another verison of 2d zelda, but, for the wii, with massive stages and game play, at he same difficulty level as the snes, or old zelda games
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13It looks like digg is biased. Its no longer a free and open forum.
From my observation.
To get higher diggs -
1. Speak against MS, Sony, BestBuy, PriceRitePhoto irrespective of who's right
2. Speak for and praise all Nintendo products - Wii, DS whatnot
3. Speak against PSP and all things PS3
To get ---diggs -
1. Speak for Sony
2. Speak against Nintendo and Wii, DS
3. Speak for PSP
Now, watch as this post gets modded down because I'm saying the following
-- I have an HDTV and it sucks that Wii doesn't output HD res. This sucks. Nintendo could succeed with Wii but only if it makes adult oriented games. I don't want to discover the child in me all the freaking time. And I can take only so many variations on Mario or Zelda.. I sure hope Wii succeeds with its innovative controller, but I'll wait till it makes proper adult oriented games ( tennis, table tennis, baseball etc. ) Real Sims. Not those stupid Mario and characters running around the baseball diamond with power ups.
The next-gen is also about graphics to some extent. Games like GRAW, PGR3 seem next gen in large because of its graphical prowess.
And I don't need to talk about the DS. Its short for toys for 9 year old girls. I hate the DS. It looks like a make up kit for girls. And 1997 called. It wants its games and graphics back. Jeez.
I'm done ranting.
Now watch people my magic.
I command you all to mod this anti-nintendo post down. - hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Guess what, genius. The page is delivered through Babelfish: he's speaking French!
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4> brute force
Heh, that's a funny way of making little boys sound like big men.
I normally get modded down because I go one step further and call them retards, so the negative number = number of fragile egos. It's fun to troll and incite some flames when they are so goddamn religious about their cartoon games. If the voting system was actually logical I'd be tempted to stay inline but right now it's just so farcical that I can't take any of it seriously enough to feel inclined to actually discuss anything. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Better graphics are nice, but it depends what you use them for. PS3 and Xbox need nice graphics because the majority of games aim for realism. GC and Wii (guessing) don't, because Nintendo doesn't do many realistic games. You do not need 50 trillion gigafloppingdonkeyhertz to put some catchy cartoony or stylised character on the screen. How many more polygons do you need on the screen for Mario, or Mario Kart, or Animal Crossing, or Zelda before it gets pointless? I get the impression Red Steel is going for a stylistic approach rather than sheer realism, and in my opinion you don't need mega graphics to pull off a really great style.
To sum up, graphics on the level of X360 and PS3 would just be overkill for the type of games Nintendo consoles have. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9about as many as there are magazines, previews, hands-on accounts that say it will
lose translation: none - xioner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5But remember that its not just graphics... its the overal look of the game
i watchedd a kid playing Fight Night on an Xbox360 at EB yesterday... at first I was like "WOW!!" because it is photo-realistic and the room and spectators outside the ring are a fully rendered 3D environment....
But then, as I watched, I saw that the characters didnt move very fluidly, their heads were almost rigid, and punches almost never looked like they connected.
Now, I expect that there will be better games coming out soon.... and that was still impressive for a launch title.... but I would rather play Soul Caliber on an old Dreamcast (even with its blocky graphics) than Fight Night on a 360.
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Are you kidding me? OoT is a beautiful game. Maybe not in poly count, but definitely in style. I've seen many current gen games that, imo, looked worse than OoT. Not because they were technically inferior (they weren't), but because they just didn't have the heart and the style that OoT did.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8"But there are things which Xbox can make and which Wii cannot make" ... Blue screens of death?
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Err, why not? It has just as much disk space. The 360's power isn't why Oblivion is huge, it's why it's pretty. Huge games will not be an issue on the Wii. There are no technical limitations there.
Hell, Twilight Princess is supposedly over 100 hours with double the dungeons of OOT. Have you seen the screenshots of the city? It's looking pretty huge. Maybe not Oblivion huge, but it's hard to say at present. - Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@oGMo
You said :
"A funky controller doesn't make an innovative game. Swinging a controller or tilting it around doesn't make an innovative game; you're doing the same things, you're just using a different joystick. New gameplay makes innovative games."
I think that is half right (gameplay is important), but it is also about the -feel- of the game. Read this...it might help gain perspective :
http://theboard.zogdog.com/index.php?showtopic=12328&hl=varian
"Iwata has said that Nintendogs was so successful because of the universal appeal of "petting puppies". We have assumed that Nintendogs was successful because of the dogs themselves. But there have been dog games before. No, it is the 'petting' and interaction with the dog that is creating such a sensory experience for users. Talking to the dog via the microphone, petting the dog with the stylus are all creating feelings for those who enjoy Nintendogs... something no other game has ever done before. Nintendogs is going to be one of the best selling games in the past ten years. It is at six million units sold and definately going to outsell games like Halo 2. Of course, the gaming press with their eliteness is ignoring it because "it is not a true game"." - Anagrama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why can't we all get along? When you get your Wii, I'll bring my Xbox 360 over, and hopefully we'll know somebody who buys a PS3. That way, we can try all of the consoles and decide which of them is "better."
I remember when my friend brought his Gamecube to my house and we played Super Monkey Ball until the sun came up. Stupid fun. And we played Halo.
If you have fun, that is what matters. Not who "pwns" who. - untakennick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You forgot one way to get higher diggs... Complain about modding down due to something you normally get modded down for, and you get modded up as proof that it's untrue. Brilliant! Anyway, I'm with you on the HD resolutions. There's a lot of things on the Gamecube that look very pixelated on an HD TV, especially bit-mapped graphics.
