- lacronicus, on 01/07/2008, -2/+24There comes a point when it just can't get any bigger. I don't find this the least bit surprising, it's not as though it could just keep growing forever, and it's not as though it's getting smaller. Not a big deal really.
- dustinhyle, on 11/10/2009, -0/+16With systems still not being totally available people aren't buying games before they can get a hold of the console they desire.
- thedemographic, on 01/07/2008, -0/+11The gaming industry has just reached critical mass with it's targeted audience. They have to reach a different age group and/or gender to keep up on it's growth curve and thats why nintendo, with the people they're getting with the wii and ds, seem like geniuses. This isn't nintendo bias, sony and microsoft are actively trying to reach the same audience that nintendo has even since their booming success.
- MikeonTV, on 01/07/2008, -0/+11I've memorize that youtube extension my friend. I will never be rick rolled again
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -0/+10Well considering the movie industy has a total revenue of about 12 billion(2006), perhaps the market is simply mature? This isn't a slowing of the segment, it is a slowing of the growth of the segment.
- Minutemanjones, on 01/07/2008, -0/+9Growth is growth. I don't see the point in worrying about video game growth slowing. Now if it was not growing, then there would be a problem.
- mattes5, on 01/07/2008, -0/+9The WHOLE economy is seeing a slow of growth.... its called a recession.
- SuckMyDigg, on 01/07/2008, -0/+8Well I would imagine just about every industry is going to be seeing some major slowing. That's kinda what happens when the country begins a recession / depression.
- ausfahrt, on 01/07/2008, -0/+8Until the slugs that are DX10 and Vista kill it.
- musters, on 01/07/2008, -0/+7it's the same as saying "Winter expected to be cold". All 3 major players just released their systems, of course there is going to be a slowdown after that. It's remarkable how this makes it in the news.
- Sqlawl, on 01/07/2008, -0/+7It's probably for the better. If the industry for software keeps growing we're going to get markets flooded with crappy games, like what happened to the Atari.
- manicallday, on 01/07/2008, -1/+7Gas or games?
- Richandler, on 01/07/2008, -0/+6The economy is slowing and will continue through 2008. Of course industries aren't going to be growing as much. Inflation is number missing in this stat too.
- skyfire1, on 01/07/2008, -0/+5Also, third party developers have been releasing ***** titles lately.
- anderzole, on 01/07/2008, -2/+7exactly. They need to focus on game play instead of killing us with amazing graphics. That's why the Wii has taken off, because (gasp!) it's fun to play. While it may be nice, no one cares about how life like a blade of grass looks when you're on a mission in a combat game. The game play is above and beyond the most important factor. I think the Wii kind of reminded people of that and hopefully developers will keep that in mind as new games come down the pipeline.
- Shoebox639, on 01/07/2008, -0/+4at least its only the second derivative that is going negative.
- BlueSkyfish, on 01/07/2008, -1/+5But it's those gems that people are buying. Let those developers make shovelware, people will pick the good games in the long run. Super Mario Galaxy is the second highest rated game of all time because it's a fun single player experience and that's why it's selling so much.
- shcforward, on 01/07/2008, -0/+3Yeah, even 13% a year is pretty huge. Lots of companies / industries / economies are ecstatic if they get up to 4 or 5% growth.
- obxjdt, on 01/07/2008, -1/+4Waisting time on a computer, is waisting time on a computer....What's the difference? 85% of digg is useless... Except for your insightful thoughts that always make me see things your way....
8-/ - kuuhaku, on 01/07/2008, -0/+3...or they will broaden their consumer base. As the gamer gets older, they will still be gamers. They will just have more disposable income to use. It's a great idea, because gamers will always be gamers.
- kingmanic, on 01/07/2008, -0/+2At 28 I spend more on gaming then I ever did. At 39 my cousins spending outstrips mine.
- jaybol, on 01/07/2008, -2/+4i agree...my wife even wants a nintendo DS...they are making the pink ones that even appeal to girls
- BlueSkyfish, on 01/07/2008, -0/+2I guess you never played Metroid Prime 3.
- DrThunder, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2The U.S. economy is slowing so the U.S. game industry will slow. That would suck for Microsoft since most of their Xbox business is in the U.S.. The Wii will pull further ahead "don't ask me why" and the PS3 will catch up.
- kingmanic, on 01/07/2008, -2/+4Game play is a relative thing. Wii games are (so far) mostly old mini-games repacked. There are some gems but the library is pretty thin. Fire emblem, zelda:TP, Metroid, and RE:4 are the only semi-deep games of the current crop. The rest isn't "gameplay" but "replay" of old ideas. It's taken off due to being fun at parties which spreads it via word of mouth but as a lifetime gamer i find it mostly empty rehashes.
- L4WL3RS34L, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Are you kidding? It will get much bigger, because old people never had the chance to play games. People that started gaming as a kid, are still playing it as an adult now. In 100 years, there will be so many kids and adults playing games.
- 3drage, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1Want to know why? The marketing folks over at the recording industry jumped ship and started working in the video game industry. All those CEOs that ran the music industry into the ground are now paving the way for a bright video gaming future.
- uker, on 01/07/2008, -1/+2with more people middleaged, game consumers will shrink more.
- beezn, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1does this consider digital distribution methods? if not - totally invalid reporting. wii, 360, PS3 and PC all use digital distribution and rarely is there any figures given to represent it.
- obxjdt, on 01/07/2008, -1/+2Going to drop by .2 billion dollars....
Sorry, that's cash flow beyond my comprehension......Donald Trump's too...... - mattwalton56, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1Just wait until the next generation of consoles come out, then we'll see if its still declining...
- statrick, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1bad economy + horrible games + wow = game industry fails
to many rushed games imo. take your time, people aren't gonna stop playing games, they are just more patient to wait for the good ones. - 3drage, on 01/07/2008, -1/+2Much less money than I was spending jumping from game to game though. Ever since I picked up WoW, there hasn't been a need to spend the $150 or so a month for gaming. WoW has actually saved me money in the long run.
- smek2, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Nothing can grow forever, at least not with exponential rate. I don't see the drama if game industry growth seen slowing. I even think that might be a good thing. Instead of focusing on making billions, how about some real innovation?
- demesisx, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I am 26 and I am not some dumb loser who wants to spend 60 dollars on something that has a detrimental effect on my brain.
- warrenterr, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1It will start picking up again, once new gen becomes a bit more mainstream.
- gimlik, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1Not growing as much? Why you ask? It's because everyone is addicted to World of Warcraft, like myself :/
Must.... get.... new.... game... soon............... - Carteelith, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1I think people are just getting a lot more playing time out of games these days. Especially with achievements. Hell, I'm still working on Lost Planet and Rainbow Six Vegas! What incentive do I really have to buy a new game before I beat those?
- dagamer34, on 01/07/2008, -1/+1Brawl didn't come out last year. Simple as that.
- GojiraBreath, on 01/07/2008, -0/+0We'll see what happens. I'm skeptical of a slow down. I already have 15 XBOX 360 games on my watch list for this year.
- Topher06, on 01/08/2008, -1/+1I guess you have never bought a game console because they have ALWAYS been overpriced from the start. Or your 12 and it takes a lot of throwing papers into puddles to earn enough to buy a Wii.
- 7yTaNOy7, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0Very good question. A lot of us need to save $$$!
- demesisx, on 01/07/2008, -3/+3I wonder if they realize that it's "slowing" because of the ridiculous prices of the systems and games. I haven't bought an Xbox, Xbox 360, or a PS3 (even though I REALLY want them) because of the unbelievable prices attached to such systems.
- dotpage, on 01/08/2008, -2/+2good thing. maybe along with the writer's guild strike the American mind can start evolving again...
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -2/+1start making MMOFPSs the future of gaming.
- Cannon590A, on 01/07/2008, -5/+4I disagree with the Wii being garbage part, though I totally agree that the PC is better than any console so far.
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -2/+1Article
Microsoft's Xbox 360, launched two years ago, competes against Nintendo's Wii and the Sony PlayStation 3 consoles
Ummm compete considering Microsoft's Xbox 360 just pwned ! every other console this Year again i would say compete is the wrong word to use more like Ruled over the gaming industry and console war doubters ! - Number23, on 01/08/2008, -1/+0Well you must be a teenager. I was recently playing a ps1 game titled “One” (you aren’t missing anything) and I found the receipt in the game manual (I always put them there). I bought the game at Toys-R-Us in April 1996 and paid $49 plus tax. At today’s top prices of $59, games have gotten cheaper.
- FurnitureHoney, on 01/07/2008, -2/+0Perhaps it's because people aren't as comfortable as they once were while playing video games. Sure, many current systems allow for interactive play, but what about the traditional games that are still being traded amongst friends? Gamechairs.com sells awesome interactive and "lazy" video rockers - definitely worth checking out!
