- Lixie, on 10/12/2007, -30/+139It's official. Sony bashing has become a national pastime. And deservedly so....
- tonythespy, on 10/12/2007, -35/+144All that will change once some great new exclusive games come out like Final Fantasy, Guitar Hero, and devil may cry..... Oh wait
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -11/+55No company has ever ruled the console war for 3 generations. Sony is not God, they are susceptible to the laws of economics too.
- Kurando, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42Didn't a Sony representative state that they won't lower prices for at least two years?
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44@frozo
Someone forgot the NES and SNES pretty quickly. - Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -29/+66Guitar Hero has been confirmed for Wii, thanks for playing though.
With the way Square-Enix is going there's no reason to believe that FF won't go multiplatform. It's a complete wildcard right now. - barc0001, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36@itazura

Activision CEO states it in a conference call to investors that it's going to be on Wii in 2008 - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38I wonder if sony bashing happens in Japan.. nahh
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30How would they lower prices when they are already practically paying people to buy them? (they lose an incredible amount of cash with each sell).

Also, quoted from Mike Griffith the CEO activision:
"In fiscal 2008, we'll double our offerings on DS and the Wii, including ...... Guitar Hero."
Fiscal 2008 means it could come out any time between April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008.
Dragon Quest was recently announced for the DS and you're asking me how FF is a wildcard?? - WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Has the PS3 come out for Europe yet?
No?
Oh, Europe doesn't count towards sales. - demonotaku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Here's a direct link considering the above seems to be blog spam.

I'd rather read the original article then someone talking about the article. - MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -13/+35Do you support Microsoft? The list of "problems" with their activities would be prohibitive in this reply due to space reasons.
Nintendo? Again, another veritable laundry list of arrogant missteps and behavior that should've gotten them shunned by everyone....
Truth is, they're ALL corporations... if they make a good product, doubtless the past "sins" are somehow overlooked by the great unwashed. I happen to like the PS3. I have a 360 too. I hate both companies, but as has been said before countless times, "you can't fight city hall (so to speak.)" If everyone who blogged, wrote, espoused, mused, complained on a forum, farted in a public toilet about Sony (or any other corporation) would stop buying said company's products.... think of the message we could send. But alas, we would rather curse the darkness than light a candle...
And right now, Sony's the poster child for bungled PR and launch fiascoes. Last launch it was someone else... (Nintendo I'd say) Previous to that it was someone else even.... (Sega Saturn?) So, let's be realistic and save the vitriol for the times it'll do the most good (I'm referring to the royal "you", not Tolkan in particular.... so put the swords and pitchforks away...)
Microsoft is a chicken bone away from becoming the Sony of the next generation (or this one... it's early yet)... so before those who feel Sony is down _and_ out... not so much.
They may not even be so "down", but they are most definitely _not_ out. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28I don't think anyone expected Microsoft to do nearly as well as they have, especially entering such a dominated market. Pretty incredible that they were able to compete so well.
- stvnly, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31despite its circulation, usa today sucks
- pwnage24, on 10/12/2007, -10/+30Who cares? People are going to buy whichever system they want. The PS3, 360, and Wii are all great systems. I have the pleasure of owning all three and id have to say that PS3 is the most played then Wii then 360...they are consoles not a life decision
- DirkBelig, on 10/12/2007, -14/+33@cyrix - Spin all you want, little girl, but you're only lying to yourself.
Q: How can you sell what you don't have?
A: YOU CAN'T!!!!
The reason that the numbers LOOK favorable to the PS3 in comparison is because for about 5-6 months, you couldn't find an Xbox 360 in stores. If M$ could've put products on shelves, they would've sold them all. If Nintendo could get more Wiis on the shelves, they'd sell those, too.
OTOH, the pathetic PS3 was in common supply by New Year's Day, barely SIX WEEKS after launch. I remember when the PS2 came out - it was like summertime before you could see one sitting out at a store without a scrum breaking out amongst the people trying to claim it. There is no eBay market for these white (or is it shiny black?) elephants.
I was in Beast Buy tonight and there were plenty of PS3s in the cage, no one playing the demo unit and a couple of kids playing with the 360 kiosk. Publishers aren't shifting over to the 360 because they want the hassle of coding for two platforms; it's because the stench of death coming from Sony is so overwhelming they know that to ignore the 10+ million Xbox 360 owners who've proven very supportive of titles is suicidal. Not every person with a PS3 is going to buy a particular title. Even "Gears of War" was only bought by perhaps 40% of the 360 owners. If that high a percentage bought a PS3-exclusive title, that would mean ~800K and if a game costs $10+ million to produce, they aren't going to make their money back. - actionscripted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19@mrassman
I agree. The first time I heard that Microsoft was entering the console market I laughed. Then I laughed a bit more when I was told they were calling it the "Xbox", because of how over-used the "X" had already become in product naming:
GoGurt X-treme, Jello X-treme, Right Guard X-treme, Microsoft XBox... - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -13/+31USA Today is a "Major Newspaper" since they're the 13th most circulated Newspaper in the world.
"The highest selling from the United States is USA Today, which is 13th in the world."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspaper_circulation
Thank you for playing, care to insert another coin and try again? - cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -35/+51Digg me down if you have too, but the PS3's launch so far is doing better than the 360's, negative hype aside. The numbers so far have shown they are doing quite well against the 360 (the Wii on the other hand....well that's just handing Microsoft and Sony's collective asses to themselves.)
I fail to see how the PS3 is the "underdog" when it's doing considerably better than the 360 did at launch. - Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24Since nintendo anyways.
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25If the console was a similar price to the Xbox 360, I don't think they would have a problem. My buddy picked one up, and while it is a really great system, I can't see spending 600 bones on it when I can get a seemingly comparable system for much less. Yeah, the PS3 is probably better than the 360, but none of the games really show it right now.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -6/+20Kura- Yep:

Direct digg link for ya too. :] - MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Well said. It's just a piece of silicon and plastic. It's not a life/death choice. If it were, I'd pretend to care more that 360 fanbois hate PS3s and vice-versa. It's still fun to watch the posturing and crowing from time to time... but not for long at any given moment, because this sort of juvenile fun deteriorates into a bunch of drooling teenagers arguing who's mom is more like a cheap hooker...
Funny, but only in small doses. ;) - tdk2fe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12This should have linked to the original USA Today article - not an article about an article on USA Today. Not dugg.
- icon7, on 10/12/2007, -18/+29don't forget LittleBigPlanet, KillZone2, Metal Gear Solid, and Socom
- Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19@itazura
Ok, you've gone completely ***** bonkers now.
"dragon quest on the wii?"
Where the ***** did I say that? What are you talking about?
"I did "***** google it""
The google-it link was in response to your denial of Guitar Hero on the Wii. Which you have no response to... truth hurts I guess. In case you failed to notice, none of the sources I gave had anything to do with Final Fantasy. Reading comprehension much?
"I'm talking the main FFXIII game, the MAIN franchise"
So am I, and when it gets ported to Xbox360, just like many people in the industry expect, I'll mail you a copy so you don't forget.
Square is not Sony's bitch anymore and development costs are rising. I wouldn't count on FF being an exclusive. - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Not sure if you want to count this, but Nintendo has ruled the handheld arena for over 15 years. Consoles are another story though.
- MaynardJK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Wamzlee
The Wii is also being sold in Europe. Those numbers in the article were U.S. only - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -3/+10I didn't say that they're a good news paper, I just was correcting 'itsme92' for their slight error, stvnly, and mechafenris..
As a matter of fact, I tend to agree with the statement USA Today makes excellent Bird Cage Fodder, or as I like to use it, Litter Box Liner. - scrytch, on 10/12/2007, -23/+30@cyrix
You're spinning your stats here. The PS3 launch, with plenty of stock available in retail is outselling what the Xbox 360 was selling with no stock in retail at it's launch.
You can find a PS3 anywhere 3 months after it's launch - 3 months after the Xbox 360 launch they were still difficult to find.
Sony deserve all the bashing they get - the problem is no matter what anyone else says Sony fans still cheer for them... makes me laugh :)
Regards,
Shane. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8All this shows is that USA today is not in touch with the gaming industry. It is way too early to say anything about any system. The PS2 didn't gain its dominance for at least a year and a half.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@itazura
Square's main franchise has always been Dragon Quest. It might not sell that well in the US, but it's the one name that drives the whole industry in Japan. All other traditional RPGs follow DQ. It's a much bigger deal to have DQ announced on a non-Sony console than even FF; we all know that this defines the main player in Japan, and console RPGs are made for Japan. Final Fantasy will follow. - itsme92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, but people like me want to be sure their making their right choice on a next-gen system. They only have money for one system, and once they buy it they want to be happy about their choice.
I currently don't own a next-gen system, I'm sitting on the fence, but I remember that once I got my PS2, I became an extreme PS2 fanboy. I wanted the Xbox and the Gamecube to both fail in the market, because I wanted my system to have all the games, I didn't want to look at my brand new PS2 and say "dammit, can't play that game either". - unununium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Note to StrangeWill:
There is a LOT more to the article than the title, take your fingers, remove them from your keyboard. - nicbrown, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"they are consoles not a life decision"
In my country, a PAL 60GB PS3 is going to set me back a few dollars under US$850.
Dropping US$850 on a console is not a decision to make lightly. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5nexgenwars has worldwide numbers. The USA Today article was referring to US numbers.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My comments got heated in retaliation to all of the anti-Sony slander that has been constantly hitting this site. Look at my history, I took a vacation from it all! I fell a little bit into the tit for tat nonsense and decided that since I'm a grown adult there is no need for that. I've bought the console I wanted, have had a load of fun on it, and now feel a little sorry for those who wish to bicker instead of playing their games.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Who the hell came up with this gaming monarchy rule. Considering we are on the 7th generation consoles now and the only leader of the pack has been Nintendo there is no reason (other than the sheer fact that you dont "want" them to) sony cannot come out on top again. It's amazing how people speak as if they have rules for this. It is whomever has the best product sell the most and the consumers win. It normally takes a longer period of time and is normally not easy to predict.
- MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15Don't know why people are digging you down for that comment. USA Today is quite possibly the pabulum of print news. They're right above the Weekly World News in terms of bird cage fodder.
Serious journalism they aren't. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The PS3 actually makes for a very good media center. It's more open than the 360 is.. which only supports playback of WMV and audio. It's a pain to transcode everything.
I didn't really want one at first, but after I read how putting linux on the system makes it that much more useful, I went and got one.
Emulators, all sorts of video playback, bluray ripping, etc. Sooner or later someone will figure out how to get deeper into the system. But for now, it's fun to toy around with. - dudemanbro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8what do you all consider a good newspaper?
- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sony has made very few good original games.
Nintendo on the other hand, makes great games. But, considering that third party support has been an ongoing issue with the Gamecube, and now the Wii, it would be fair to say that Nintendo is much better at making games than making hardware. - ToastyBagel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well, it could be worse, I could have stock in Sony.
- fredfredburger2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5which Amazon are you using? a quick search on Amazon shows 33 outlets have them in stock.
though, I'll admit I didn't try amazon.aq - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5All this nonsense talk about exclusives is quite ridiculous. Development costs are so high and no 3rd party is going to want to risk leaving out millions out of their potential market. Forget about 3rd party exclusives. It's going at be all about 1st parties and all 3 companies have strong and unique 1st party studios all releasing excellent titles. Pick the one you want and quit posting self serving ***** like this article over and over. One can only assume that you have no good games to play and picked the wrong console (and before you start, look at my history, i don't live on some of here like half of you do).
Ask yourself this: if you have the games you want, why the ***** would you care who 'wins' the console wars unless you are a pom pom toating cheerleading fanboy? That goes double to the morons who feel compelled to 'prove' that certain consoles aren't in demand or otherwise.
ALL consoles are million sellers, ALL matter to 3rd parties. - MaynardJK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@exhaust
SNES, PS1, and PS2 are all examples of how you are full of *****. Each "won" their respective generation and had lesser graphical capabilities than their competitor(s). - eidolons, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"I chuckle when you say we are in trouble, because when you couldn't find them on shelves, some said we were in trouble," says Sony Computer Entertainment's Dave Karraker. "So we're damned if we do and damned if we don't."
Can Sony ever say something that doesn't come across as arrogant for once? They don't seem to realize their attitude is one of the reasons for they're so unpopular. - stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is a bad comparison. Both browsers where competing for the same space on machines running windows. Every machine running windows had Internet Explorer installed, and these users had to go out of their way to install Netscape. Tons of people were buying their first home PCs during this time, and knew of no reason to make the switch to Netscape.
Now if you're telling me I already have a free PS3 and therefore don't need to buy a 360 I'll gladly switch over. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What is misleading is that people are taking this article to be saying "the PS3 is a disaster". Its not, its just saying out of the gate Sony appears to have a lost a step from the last gen. They have some work to do.
I don't own a PS3 yet. I do own and 360 and a Wii. I will be the first to admit I will probably own a PS3 someday as long as the price comes down and they get some AAA titles. Right now there just isn't a reason to buy one. Sony's "failure" out of the gate is largely due to their PR presence. They basically insulted everyone with their "you must buy the PS3, it will teach you discipline" attitude. Consumers don't want to be told they must own something...they will decide that for themselves.
Give it time and I am sure the PS3 will be fine...but as for now Sony has no one to blame but themselves. Its not the media making this up. -
