Two Teens Kill 7 Year Old Girl with Mortal Kombat Moves

ripten.com — Two teenagers have been charged with killing one of the pairs ’ own 7-year-old sister using alleged Mortal Combat imitation moves. The 16 and 17 year old teens were baby sitting the child whilst the girl’s mother was at work when the incident happened.

The actual article (linked at the bottom of the page) says explicitly that they were imitating Mortal Kombat moves. I'm not saying its not an insanely stupid excuse, and I don't think video games are the cause of these problems, but it doesn't seem like the media is pulling this out of their ass (this time). It sounds to me like the kids are using it as an excuse because people have seen it work before.

            The guy on the gamer site wrote it that way because the prosecutor was the one who read the affidavit. Why don't you go misinterpret some more glorified blog span as truth.

This entire thing makes me sick from beginning to end.

Then if they ever think that what is happening to them isn't "fair", they can just remember that they are living one year of life (albeit in prison) that the little girl they murdered is not able to.

      When it comes to laws, we must try to think objectively. Huge prison sentences only serve the purpose of revenge, not rehabilitation. The ultimate goal should be to turn a dysfunctional human being into a functional one. Any humane justice system seeks to rehabilitate its criminals, not punish them. Vengeance-focused justice systems produce better criminals, not better people. In such a system, the vast majority of people who end up in the system are a net loss to society. In addition to what they already took from society, they become a lifelong resource drain.

            The amount of wrongful convictions leading to the death penalty is going DOWN not up. The only reason a lot of those wrongful executions took place was because they did not have DNA testing back then. In fact if not for DNA testing we wouldn't even be aware of quite a few of those 125 people wrongfully killed. When you do the math you get a rough estimate of 4 innocents a year are killed, now that DNA evidence is part of almost all capital cases that number is going to drop fast.

          many argue that video games are not at fault here, because any sane person does not want to kill people just by playing video games, but that separation between the video game world and the real world can disappear in some individuals when they get drunk.

          no objection to drinking though, but being drunk is damn dangerous to other people around you.

        1. deterrence (similar but not exactly the same as revenge)
        2. prevent a repeat offense

        For young children (less than 8 or so), they often don't even understand the concept of consequences of their actions yet. We rely on constant supervision and require strict adherence to authority in order to make sure that they don't harm themselves or others. So for children this young it makes no sense to send them to prison.

        But at 15 and 16 year olds, they are expected to understand the consequences of their actions. If they think they can beat up their little sister and possibly kill her with little or no consequences, then they are a lot more likely to do it. They are also much more capable to out-muscle or circumvent authority. This is why we implement punitive sentences to send a clear message to all 15/16 year olds that they will be held accountable for their actions.

        As for rehabilitation, you need to understand that not everyone is kindhearted. They will only do what they feel like and it is not society's responsibility to bend over backwards and brainwash those people to make sure that they never feel like killing or raping someone.

As I recall when i was young we had rock fights and dumb things like that. If someone got nailed in the forehead with a rock (like I did) everyone immediately stopped the fight to check if they were OK. With a broken wrist, 20 bruises, bleeding in the neck, swelling of the brain; there had to be a few moments when even if no physical signs of damage were showing up it was clear the girl was getting seriously hurt.

        Maybe you had to be there, I wonder who the "witnesses" are that are mentioned in the article and how much they saw, how they reacted.

        I'm all for lesser prison sentences across the board. Putting people in jail for the rest of their lives for one stupid mistake is a waste of a/another life and of huge cost to society.
        I can imagine it happening if maybe they were on some other drugs too...it would be perhaps a little more understandable. I just don't know how this could happen.. How could they not realize what they were doing? This is like torture, totally sadist. I have no idea what to make of this case.

      You need to be an animal to attack children. Humans are genetically programmed to care about children. Not in the sense of maternal instincts, but litterally in the sense that a child is supposed to cause an emotional response in humans that make them want to protect them. For example, if a stranger approaches you in the street or asks for help, you may or may not refuse to talk or help that person, because he's an adult and you don't feel at all responsible for him.

      But if a child asks for help, you'll miss work to help the kid. You'll sacrifice your time and energy to help the kid just because it's a kid. If the kid is crying you'll feel compelled to comfort him.

      These people kicked and punched a child to death. They are degenerates.

This is not a 13 year old whom I could buy the possibility that it could have been unintentional. The tragedy is that people will have enough compassion for them that they'll probably commit a similar crime when they get out of prison in their forties.

      If there weren't signs of abuse before this killing, my guess would be that it was mostly the boyfriend's fault. The older sister was probably either passed out drunk, or not around when the killing blow occurred.
