- Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -9/+42Isn't the HD Tivo $800? Plus $20 a month.
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Every != Comcast. Free != $12.99/month.
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -18/+41So then you can tivo your favorite shows using your ps3 while you have fun playing your wii. So it does have potential to be useful. Too bad a real tivo is cheaper.
- Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Actually ironed toast is reallly good. It flattens it just right. An iron makes a great grilled cheese too.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -26/+43Wow, the potential of the PS3 is started to become realised quite early methinks. Imagine what people will have it doing in a couple of month's time. I guess Wii users will still be waiting for their browser to finish loading at that point as well.
- Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Time Warner's is $15/mo (they hide $10 of the cost in your 'package price.' tho, so it only looks like $4.95/mo)
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19WHOA! The most interesting part of the article is actually in the comments section. Someone is getting close to running HD-DVDs on his PS3. I'm sold on a PS3 if it can play both HD disc formats and be utilized as a DVR.
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24@Nixon,
Again, the PS3 is $500 for a system with a lot more features than the $400 Xbox 360. Can your $400 XBox 360 play back HD DVD? Does your $400 360 have an HDMI output? Ahh right...nope. How much does the HD DVD cost you? Oh yes, $200 more. Can you even get an HDMI output on a 360...mmm nope. So for the same features, you pay $100 more for a 360 and STILL have no HDMI out.
If you want wireless internet, tac on $100 for a PS3 and you also get 40gb more of HD space, or tack on $100 more for the 360 (you're at $700 now for those counting with 40gb less of HD space and no HDMI output) and you ONLY get a wireless adapter.
And you can keep your proprietary hardware interface, I'll take the PS3 with linux, standard hard drives, and lots of USB ports, thank you very much. My PS3 will end up being far more capable, open, and customizable than the 360. There is no question about these things. You're locked down, I'm not. I have a machine that lacks games in the short term, but has better features, more promise due to the open architecture, and no online fees. It's really not a difficult choice when you think honestly about it. I'm no 360 hater either. I'll buy one when they become a little cheaper and have HDMI. However given the choice for HD gaming, the PS3 is a much better deal if HD is your bag (and it is bag right now). - warriorscot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13For some of the repliers, for one thing not everyone can afford or get a Tivo the fact that the PS3 can do alot of other things kinda makes it better value since when did they put a blu-ray drive and games console into a Tivo that again cant get everywhere in the world and its often not that good or worth it in some places ive got a PVR but its not very good nothing close to a mythbox for functionality. No monthly subscriptions on myth has all the features of your standard PVR and plays your games and does blu ray, thats making the price a little less of a factor as a negative.
Itll only get better especially since sony themselves twigged on to this(they did aim PS3 as more of a media centre) and the PVR/media center version of the PS3 with myth would be great. - ishtari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The convert costs ~$180 and doesn't do HD, so nothing for me.
http://www.plextor.com/ENGLISH/products/PX-TV402Uadvancedtechspec.htm - macatak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12you'd expect 'a system' costing $600 to already have PVR? what kind of 'system' are you talking about?
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Like every other Myth installation, it doesn't support CableCard and probably never will. And without CableCard you won't be able to record any HD programming off cable.
- MediaShipper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yeah, and your toaster doesn't have that starch spray feature for extra crispy toast.
- radio1mike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I have played around with MythTV before. It's great for a free-app. It is a PITA to install, unless you are comfortable with Linux. Although, if you slag through, you'll be comfortable by the end of the install. If you want to try it, I'd recommend an install via KnoppMyth.
The big problems I see (to my knowledge):
1) 60 GB is a small drive for SD PVRs, never mind HD-PVRs.
2) Maturity of HD-tuner card Linux drivers.
3) No Live TV capability (aka pause, ff, rw...)
4) Memory amount for PS3 is to small for adequate performance.
But personally, I think it's great. Sony did do one thing right-- by including a Linux distro for the PS3. It's the one life line that can help Sony, just like mod-chips, XDSL and XBMC are still doing for the original Xbox. - tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10i bet my toaster oven can beat your toaster iron's mom's face's ass
- YouEEEeeediot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Why would anyone even bother? The whole point of a PVR is that you set it and forget it, so you either leave your PS3 in MythTV and stop using it as a console or you manually swap back and forth. I completely understand the point people are making in that it has the capability, and I'd be pumped about it too IF that capability existed when using it as a console.
Also, when running MythTV with that USB capture device you are only going to record in SD at 480i. That is a lot of electrical power and hassle to just capture SD "some" of the time. - Stephenishere, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Hey do you know where i can find toads that engage in battle?
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Who cares what you can do with Mini-ITX. This is an additional feature on a pre-existing product. If you don't need a device that can , Play games, dvd's and blu ray as well..... why are you here?
- Tainek, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16and who is stupid enough to use a 350W Computer as a PVR?
i could buy a mini-itx board+all the components, and save on electricty in just over a year (and it would be fanless, less noise) and i wouldnt tie up a $600 console in the process
i can use my iron to cook toast, does that make it a good idea? no - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@sleepwalkers
So you are saying there should be a library as good as the 360 in less then a month? Give it time man. No console is ever worth it at launch. But about 3 months later when the cool stuff starts coming, things change. - charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's where I'm at. I have a Wii and a PS3, and they live together very happily. They serve two completely different purposes, and I'm happy with both of them.
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Every!=Cablevision: $9.95 a month (non HD) $12.95 a month (HD)= Free
- Cubedude04, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You could just buy a TiVo and not have 600 parts you dont need
Assuming you only want to watch tv on it - jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm a gamer and I love technology. :)
I'm not that interested in the DVR itself in this article, but to me what this article shows is some of what's possible with the PS3. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Go go gadget PVR!!
Sorry, I'll leave. - keyrat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Can I use a MythTV setup as a sort of media center, even if I don't do PVR? I want to stream movies from various sources, including the internet.
- dadood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I actually like the idea of a device that serves more than one purpose.
One $600 component could basically replace a few of these:
PS2: $150
Entry to Mid level PVR with MythTV: $800 - $1200
BluRay DVD Player: $800 - $1000
CD Player: $50
Linux Computer: $300
Toaster?: $20
I have a Wii and I could see these two living side by side without a problem. The same way my Xbox and PS2 lived together for 5+ years. I don't have a 360 so I can't comment on it being replaced or not, most likely not. Now I don't agree with the way Sony is shoving BluRay down their customers throat but I have to say that at least Sony is not sitting back and waiting for the next company to create the newest *****. It takes a big head and some balls to accomplish some of the things that Sony has. I plan on buying the PS3 someday but I don't feel like its a "must have" right now. - r81984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I heard if you take the PS3 to 88 miles per hour, you can go back in time to 1955. (remember watch out for lighting when flying with the hover conversion)
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yeah, but, you could get a better system as a PVR for less.
- DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"A game console isn't worth it until there are good games to play, period."
I'm sure the plenty of people who invested in an XBox just to mod it and run XBMC will disagree with you. I'm not giving points to the 360 or the PS3 here, but I'm just saying that that's a narrow minded opinion that's getting pretty old fashioned with all the extra things consoles do these days. - Anand999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So can you use the PS3 as a DVR and play games at the same time? Doesn't seem like it. This kind of defeats one of the biggest benefits of a DVR - TV on your own terms. If you have to quit playing your PS3 in order to boot it back into Linux so MythTV can start recording something, what's the point?
Anyway, like others have said, a dedicated MythTV box is still a better idea in my opinion. That way you can play your PS3 and record stuff at the same time. - MediaShipper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6yeah, but can it toast bread too
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IGN also chose it best hardware system. It was on digg before haters buried it as inaccurate.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@Jimboe1337
Sure, you could build a PVR for the amount of a PS3. But then you don't get Blu-Ray, PS 1/2/3 games, a Web Browser, and many more things. - aznhalf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just by looking at the comments and their diggs you can see that Sony and the PS3 is already making a recovery.
I think the 'I hate everything Sony touches' mantra that has been so popular on the internet is coming to an end. People are finally seeing that the PS3 is a pretty damn good piece of hardware. I'm definately looking to pick one up sometime this year. The potential is too good to pass up. The console war is far from over.
Btw, I have a 360 and a Wii right now so I'm not a Sony fanboy by any means. - craive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^ Woops, meant HDD size not cost, sorry.
- dmyajd, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1No one asked.
- craive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the HDD cost, you can just upgrade the HD to a larger laptop drive.
- Jimboe1337, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I agree with Torx. You can build a pvr for the same price as a PS3, and it will probably run linux better.
Also that USB TV-Tuner isn't HD, its SD 480i
I say waste of money, but if you already have a PS3 and are interested in a pvr, this could work I guess. - gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think I will just stick with my ViP622 from DishNetwork. It is the most amazing DVR I have ever used and the HD content on it looks great.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@HOTM: How do you construe me saying "A game console isn't worth it until there are good games to play, period." as "Dude, the PS3 should have a library as good as the 360's in less than a month"?
- iampoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, gamers don't love technology? that is one of the most absurd comments I've come across.
- adairnic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Nice slur, it was necessary.
- Fallout911, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey hey this will void your warranty!!
- AARGH2K, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'll stick with my 360 that plays games and my HDTivo that records two things at once. All in one isn't a good thing when it only can do one at a time. I even have a HTPC, for my movie, music, photo library, and to play PC games. May cost more, but each does it's own thing the best. For the few PS3 owners, and the even smaller Linux crowd who like to mod consoles, I'm sure they will be thrilled. But a huge market you are not, so this is mostly something a small crowd can brag about that "they can do this". You can get a Tivo for free (not counting guide fee) that does more, and then you can still play your PS3
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Dude... The HD DVR for Bright House is only $4.95/month. No package you have to upgrade to or anything, just... bring them your existing cable box, they'll give you a DVR. HD if your TV is capable.
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8$600 for a ***** TiVo i'll pass.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4@tubejay:
That's great that you love your PS3, and that's great you feel like you're getting more for your money.
But you missed one key point: It's a game console, and it has one worthwhile game.
You can have fun running Linux on your PS3 and recording TV, I'll go play Lost Planet, Gears of War, and Viva Pinata with my friends. A game console isn't worth the money until there are good games to play. Period.
Although it's pretty badass you can use a PS3 like a TiVo, you need a USB TV Tuner. I mean, why not just hook it up to your PC that has a larger hard drive? And it doesn't look like that tuner can do HD, either, so it doesn't make it a cheap HD-DVR either. That sucks. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Do not want.
