- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42D touch screen tech is not a Revolution, in fact it is so 2005.
3D free hand tech is a Revolution and far better.. at getting the same results.
We've seen the Revolution promo video, you can hold the controller like a dentist's drill which is also similar to a paintbrush or pencil type tool.
I think the touch screen technology can be quite intuitive.. mostly for drawing, this is apparent as it has been adopted in the graphic design industry as a standard. WACOM being the big player here.
It's great for digitial drawing and writing.
Communication will play a part in Revolution, we heard they patented a technology that turns speech into words and depending on the tone and volume of the voice it is formatted differently. This would alleviate any 'need' for a touch screen on Revolution for typing.
This is providing the technology is reliable and works for Americans, Europeans and the Japanese.
Basically a microphone can be plugged into Revolutions controller down the bottom and that'd work fine for communications
Our wrists and forearms aren't as delicate as the trained complex ligaments in our hands, so it wouldn't be as good for drawing eg. in mario paint which is rumoured. This is not to say that Revolution cannot be held like a paintbrush and brush strokes detected that way..
I expect there will be a dance mat that sits on the floor and plugs into the Revolution controller by a short cord so you can play anywhere in the room. That should be fun.
I've always thought that the DS would not only use Revolution as a hub but also as a touch screen for private games, like perhaps a quiz game where you write your answers on the DS.
Also as an alternative to buying the shell, I believe Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles would use this much like the GBA connectivity did.
Use the DS as a menu screen for battles, a map and status, leaving the TV screen to be very clean, fresh and generally pretty.
But basically Revolution based touch pad is a stupid idea, the idea you could hold all those devices in one hand is proposterous.
This should not be on the gaming front page, It is basically not true. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I pretty convinced the only thing EA is ever aware of is when the next Madden title will be released.
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, ps2 does NOT have touch senitive buttons. They have PRESSURE sensitive. Theres a difference. The Nintendo DS screen is touch sensitive.
- Cojawfee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4oh my god....have you guys seen this??

I think whatever the answer to that is, is the FINAL REV SECRET

- MIKEDOGGS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are so many ***** out there that think they know everything about this system. Like this douchebag mctuna- that said there will be no interaction with zelda- must feel like a dick now.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm touch sensitive too.

This `telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a practical form of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.

jeez, don't be a prick to the guy, I thought the floor screen was pretty cool - Jamezes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg effect :o
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Naaa... I think (hope) its going to be a 3d visor
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's likely that the Revolution controller will have some touch/pressure sensative feature on the buttons, similar to the PS2's controller (even though it was hardly used).
- Legion303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent. If gaming on the Revolution is anything like it was on the NES, at least this controller will know when I'm mad at it.
"Jump, *****! JUMP! *****!" *fling* *crunch* - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"That was made by a 3rd party maufacturer, and is in no way connected to any nintendo consoles."
I realize this.
But that doesn't mean it's still not amazing. Holy crap if games could do stuff like this in 10 years.... - spxiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the record, the Revolution controller does not use gyroscopic technology in any way. It uses "CAVE wand" technology that has been around for probably 10 years or more, and I'm very excited to see it finally coming to the mainstream. Think of it more as a small-scale GPS unit than anything else. The controller itself knows nothing of its position or orientation, it just transmits signals.
I've read article after article citing the use of "gyroscopes" in the controller, just wanted to clear that misconception up. - sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn, forgot to use spellcheck. I know how to spell velocity!
- Fizban119, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Touching is good."
EEEEK! I don't want Mario to touch me there! - manicdvln, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Either she doesn't know what she is talking about or it's a miscomprehension on interviewers part. We already have seen the final controller, no touch screen. It is possible that DS may work with the Revolution in certain games to add bonus funcitons but I doubt she meant an actually touch screen on the Revolution controller, it simply would be too uncomfortable and stupid. End of story.
- rtd85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Power Glove, how i miss the 90s
- Cruhmm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could he have been referinggI think he may have meant pressure sensitivity as that is commonly misquoted as 'touch sensitivity'. And besides, it was quoted by some woman at EA. How would they know the inner workings of Nintendo?
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wikipedia Quote:
Keyboard expression often shortened to expression is the ability of the keyboard of a keyboard instrument to respond to the dynamics of the music.
For example, the piano responds exceptionally well to the force with which the keys are initially pressed; It is velocity sensitive. Several of its predecessors, such as the harpsichord, were less velocity sensitive than the piano, which is one of the key advantages of the piano.
The clavichord and some electronic keyboards also respond to the force with which a key is held down after the initial impact; They are pressure sensitive. This can be used by a skilled clavichord player to slightly correct the intonation of the notes, and/or to play with a form of vibrato known as bebung.
---------
Pressure sensitvity and volicity sensitivity. Not touch! Touch sensitivity is like the DS, tablet pcs, and ATM machines. - Tsun2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@BassCadet
That was made by a 3rd party maufacturer, and is in no way connected to any nintendo consoles. - TheSavant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Read the article again, manicdvln.
- McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That floor screen thing is in movie theaters all over the place in Chicago. You can stand on it and play simple games. There is a projector thing above your head. Its really not THAT tricky. Just novel.
- b-dizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think by touch sensitivity, they mean the buttons would be able to sense how hard you are touching, kinda like the XBox triggers, but on every button. So, driving game: B is accelerator, the farther down you are pulling the trigger, the farther your foot is touching the accelerator pedal. Likewise for brake. Fighting game: tap to jab or feint, mash to deliver a hard punch. You get the picture.
BTW, nice one scottmaximus. - diceguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lmao @ scottmaximus
too funny - GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0================================
I'm also sort of disappointed with it only having a & b. I know the actual motion of the stick is supposed to make up for a lot of actions, but I still wonder if it wouldn't have been better to have a b x and y up at the top half as well.
================================
Technically, the dpad at the top of the controller can be used as four buttons. - cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's with all of "The Wizard" references the past few days?
- zeebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still think its a mistake to not put small gba-sp style L & R buttons on at least 2 corners of the controller along with the a-b-x-y buttons on the bottom half to make it possible to play snes games with the new controller without any special attachments.
I'm also sort of disappointed with it only having a & b. I know the actual motion of the stick is supposed to make up for a lot of actions, but I still wonder if it wouldn't have been better to have a b x and y up at the top half as well.
Guess we'll see when we actually get to play with it. - Braulio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would it be the "FINAL NINTENDO REVOLUTION SECRET" and someone just let's it slip, and CLARIFIES it afterwards without any problem? Nintendo would be all over this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"We already have seen the final controller, no touch screen." I agree with the no touch screen part but we haven't see the truly final controller. The modifications are very minor. The original controller shown to us had a and b on the bottom but I saw a 3D model on a game website and the bottom buttons were changed to x and y probably to avoid confusion with the A and B bottons on top.
This (refering to the article) was probably a miscommunication and probably the DS would be used as an optional touch screen add-on. - I8PP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0-If- it does have a touch screen like the one featured in the article then the interesting thing about it is that it'll have to allow multiple inputs at once - like that giant touch screen that was dugg last week - how else would you press A and B at the same time?
Does Trudy Muller really looks like a middle-aged Italian gangster? - Rajio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes, children don't like playing games. everybody knows that.
- Avian00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I love the Power Glove. It's so bad!"
LOL!!! - MIKEDOGGS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do you work for Nintendo? How the Fu$K do you know that? Stop making up stories. And why does everyone think the new controller is going to be the only method of input? Use your brains people.
- TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To all the people citing the floor screen as amazing, wow...
Toys R Us in Times Square has had one of those for ages, and I have seen them in Washington, California, and Oregon as well.
That particular one was from the Twilight Princess experience at E3 (not sure if it says that in the video, wasn't interested enough to watch). I also got video of this, but I video taped the entire thing, as there were more interesting parts in the dungeon area of the Zelda attraction.
BORING.
As for the article itself, sounds like just some sort of idea rather than a concrete fact. Also boring.
What could the last rev secret be? Judging by what they say about ease of development, low cost for the tools, and similarity to the GameCube dev kit, I'm wondering if the consumer Rev won't have some sort of "build a game" concept in it.
If it did, and it was implemented well? GG, Nintendo wins it all. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microphones are so 2005.
You all have no idea of how great this will be.. it will be like the 3D controller again.
Now we've been desensitised from such ideas Nintendo will hit us again with some other crazy revolutionary idea.
It's going to rock trust me, and they're holding out to E3 because that's the biggest event where the public and gaming come together.. It's not going to be something technical like "it has a microphone" It's gonna be something amazing that average Joe can understand.
We're all thinking inside the box.. a microphone has been destined for Revolution since they announced Nintendo wifi.. It wont be another Nintendogs, it wont be another Zelda, it wont be a microphone.. or a touch screen.
It's gonna be something amazing that we can't even begin to think about because Miyamoto is a master.
THINK OUT THE BOX (literally, with reference to the Revolution's hardware) ; ) - artemus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys, I think the last secret about the controller is going to a microphone. Remember when Iwata said they were considering implementing a microphone? Well, this is probably the last secret of the controller. They may be thinking of implementing a next-gen voice control system. In case it happens, remember-you heard it here first.

OOHHH I OWNED THAT GAME FOR NINTENDO NES !!!!!!! - SpaceNinjaDino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree that buttons will be pressure sensitive and there is not a touch screen.

I think that I've heard that Nintendo was experimenting with something like that, yes. It had something to do with an advanced form of force feedback. But that was way back when, before they announced the rev would have tilt-sensing controls.. - I8PP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Zeebo, don't forget that there's 2 parts to the controller - there's the magic wand part and another with an analogue stick with 2 buttons. Not that it'll be any good for SNES games though, and I don't fancy using the GC joypad to play them
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Two words: Smell cartridges.
Can you smell what Nintendo's cookin'? If your playing a cooking game, then yes, now you can! - macgabriel87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i dont believe this. its a concept he said. and its 3D pointing OR touch screen. we already know what nintendo has chosen, and thats gyration.
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0While some of the games might be groundbreaking (we'll see) I'm just not buying the Revolution controller concept. I think it's a bust.
