- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+75im sorry, but Starcraft at 74? WTF kinda list is this...Starcraft is one of the greatest RTS in history... Seriously should be at least top 20...
Final Fantasy at 29!? seriously... - TheRingmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46uh, thats not even the newest list. The new one is better, especially the top 10.
http://top100.ign.com/2006/001-010.html - goat2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+43halo is ***** overrated. get over it. play a pc fps someday
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38"Top 99 console games, it should be said, from SNES to ps2."
"#5: Half-Life 2
Platform: PC"

RE4 was great, definitely in the top 5, but it is not even close to OOT.
(And what is up with Mario 64 missing the top 10?)
Damn kids... - SiLENC3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Why is there no Tetris on this list?
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17OoT as number 1. That's more like it.
- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17yea, a lot of these seem to be "what is cool now" instead of "all time". RE4 was fresh off the press when this came out so the interest was very high. Not to say the game is bad (it was awesome) but it doesn't deserve the top spot. In five years will people still think of it as the best game of all time, or will the hype have died down and the game moved to a spot somewhere further in the list?
Same goes for San Andreas, Metroid Prime 2, and God of War. All are entertaining games, but hardly have the qualities that would make me want to play them (or discuss them) again and again 5-10 years in the future. I still hear discussions of games like Chrono Trigger, SMB 3, FF7, Starcraft, Castlevania: SOTN, etc. among gamers today, whereas the hype for the former games seem to have died down.
Oh well, its a pretty good list, the games are just out of order in my opinion. - digg-dugg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18@ZaNKy - Whoa. this is actually a really old list. Why was this posted. The new IGN list just came out. The link to the most recent IGN list (couple days ago) ---->
http://top100.ign.com/2006/
ocarina of time & crono trigger go 1 and 2. - ZombieLuv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17No X-COM, no digg.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17With SSX 3 above Final Fantasy 1, StarCraft below TimeSplitters, Earthbound below Burnout 3, Super Mario 64 at #31 and Super Mario Bros. 3 at #30, Half-Life 2 at #5 with Half-Life 1 not even IN the charts (and Final Fantasy IV lacks an appearance, too), Splinter Cell Chaos Theory at #3 between Ocarina of Time and Chrono Trigger, Resident Evil 4 at NUMBER ONE, I give zero credibility to the voting readership of IGN.
- ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20@Digg-Dugg
Perhaps I'm blind, but I don't see half life 1 ANYWHERE on that list.
89 was: "#89: Phantasy Star IV" for me.
--
Personally I think that Half-life 1 well deserves the #1 spot, as HL revolutionized the gaming industry in many ways: Graphics, storyline/plot, gameplay, modability...
How can HL not even be on the top 100?
And I do agree that StarCraft definitely deserves a spot in the teens. Counterstrike also should be on this list, and countless others. This list sucks. - smoothmedia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Zelda OOT should be #1, Super Mario 3 should be much higher, and Megaman 2 should be SOMEWHERE on this list.
- wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I want chicken.
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15hahahahaha. Hilarious. April Fools!
Oh wait, it's not April, wtf? - shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I dont get why people seem to think the Halo series is so damn revolutionary. They're great games by any standards, but there's nothing terribly special about them.
- Unclekoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13RE4? Best game of all time? I disagree with most of this list
- kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13thats a better top 10.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Well that was a really ***** list.
The guy who thought it was a SNES & PS2 list was pretty close to the mark, though. - swoopdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11#80: The Legend of Zelda ARE YOU SERIOUS?
and what the hell is #76: SSX 3 and how the hell is that cooler than Zelda anything? - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Ok, your list is better.
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11What the-
Then what year did I submit? - xdefconx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11This list is complete BS....
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8uhhh NHL 94, blades of steel, RBI Baseball, Mike Tyson's Punch-out, and bad news baseball... all great sports games (and i generally hate sports games).
fallout anyone? - Noxieas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I personally think no sports game should *ever* make it on any top anything list. Its the same crap remade every year, sports games will forever be the blow.
- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I have the sudden urge to go to KFC and buy one of their new Snacker meals.
I wonder why... - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree with you. Resident Evil 4 was a great game, but number one? Over OOT? Not on my list.
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8no legend of zelda NES? no summer games comodore64? no joust arcade? No half-life 1 PC? No command and conquer? No counterstrike? no World of Warcraft? No Contra NES? This is a sham!
- slider121, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Where's Pac-Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong, Sonic, etc.. These games made 20 Years ago are still fun to play. About 90 percent of this list are current games that no one will remember 20 years from now. You need to include Atari and where is Sierra games? Any one remember Space Quest, Kings Quest, Police Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry.
- thomasprebble, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Come on. They wern't that great.
- megaton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think I'm supposed to buy chicken.
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yea, this list is much better. Wow Suikoden, Earthbound and Xenogears... man that brings back some memories. I'm old.
- modarius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7OK, Resident Evil 4 at #1? What has the world come to? I'm content with Ocarina of Time being #2, because that game was incredible. And Final Fantasy VII and III should be above Chrono Trigger. I mean, I loved Chrono Trigger, but FF7 and FF3 are games that just blow you away. Oh well..I guess IGN is just full of idiots that have terrible taste in games. Resident Evil 4.....hahahahaha.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"uh, thats not even the newest list. The new one is better, especially the top 10.
http://top100.ign.com/2006/001-010.html"
That's a better list...but Starcraft at 65 while Smackdown vs Raw 206 at 54?!?
DoubleU-Tee-Eff?!? - piratepete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6WHERE THE HELL IS TURTLES IN TIME?
- mackstann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Did you read at all?
"voted on by you the people over a long stretch of time"
How many Galaga nuts do you think visit IGN vs. Final Fantasy or Zelda or Resident Evil nuts? - jamessavik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Don't take this list serious at all- it only has games for consoles. Some of the best games have been for the PC platform.
Wizardry (1982) was originally written for the Apple II platform and ported to the PC. It was the very first RPG game not to have funny dice.
Harpoon (1989) is one of the very best modern naval simulations that you'll find anywhere. It is still alive after umpteen versions and has a worldwide fan base.
Steel Panthers (1990) is an excellent armored combat simulation. V.1 covered 1935-1950 and V.2 covered 1950-modern. It survives as World at War which can be downloaded and played for free.
Masters of Orion- was an huge hit. MOO-1 and MOO-2 were great. MOO-3 is probably great if you can figure out how to beat it.
Masters of Magic- was like a fantasy version of Civilization where you, as a powerful wizard-king, built an empire, fought battles, developed technologies and so on.
Civilization- has been a zillion seller for decades (most die hards will tell you that Civ2 is the real Civ).
Alpha Centauri- for pure addictiveness of play, its still hard to beat Alpha. Similar to other empire building games, in this one you start a colony on a mysterious new planet. The planet is only slightly less dangerous than other ideology-based human factions.
Who needs a console? - afpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Games that should've been included that haven't been mentioned yet (that I saw):
X-Wing or TIE Fighter
Psychonauts
Games that are such glaring omissions that they need to be mentioned again:
Doom (1 or 2)
Quake (pick one)
Civilization (pick one)
ANY Black Isle RPG
Really, just a horrible list overall. I have a feeling that it was voted on mostly by 12 year olds. - chancesarent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From the #1 spot: ". LOZ:OOT is my favorite game of all time. This game will amaze you with the storyline, characters, graphics, weapons, items, and great dungeons. The different, large lands and towns that can be explodered are awesome."
Is explodered a word? If not, it really should be! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Or Syndicate. Man that was a great old game...
- knyghtryda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4These lists are all fun to read, but they're pretty much all BS. Here's some "greatest games" that definitely weren't on that list, probably because of the gamers where still cutting their teeth on mario and zelda. And come on... RE4 as #1? You know this list a joke now.
System Shock 2 - You want scary? This game is scary. Not to mention well thought out, deep and fun.
Deus Ex - There hasn't been a shooter since that's had the depth of Deus Ex. Too bad its sequel sucked so much.
Baldur's Gate 2 - In my book the epitome of RPG. Nothing before or since has really matched its scope.
Half life 1 - Need I say more?
Diablo 2 - I didn't play this too much, but it more or less set the precedent for action RPG gameplay.
C&C Red Alert - Took C&C and made it campy yet slick.
IGN... forgetting about PC gaming since 2004 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Starcraft at seventy-frackin'-four?!? At least my two favorite Metroid games made it into the top 30 (they *and* Starcraft should have been higher).
No Zork. No Day of the Tentacle. No Blade Runner.
This list sucks. - Skab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Splinter Cell beats out half life 2? fail. Aids and FAIL. bury this heep!
Also why doesnt digg do polls ever? - kevin_qnn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3zelda oot was # 1 on the newer ign list posted in the comments. i'm playing through the game for the first time now and its awesome.
- hpolloni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3democracy sucks!
starcraft at #74?! WTF!
the game is a national sport on korea and it's behind time fricking splitters.
no pacman, no tetris, no quake, no FRICKIN BALDUR'S GATE!
this list is BS.... - drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeh saw that my bad, zelda is also #80, I guess Icoun'dt comprehend that it is that low on the list.
- swoopdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WHAT NO PONG!?
- ryan4477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i believe i saw WoW....maybe im seeing things.
but this list does suck. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What a load of crap
wheres al the great classics? chaos engine? civilization? etc?
and why is shenmue II (as fun as it was) was above super mario bros 3 & super mario 64?
and that ratch & clank can be found hovering above the top 70?
and God of War at #6 (wtf?)
just goes to show what kind of readership IGN has... and why I rarely go to their site. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Absolutely ridiculous. Some of the best games ever are left out of the top 100, so every zelda game can be listed?! Obscene if you ask me.
X-Com, Civilization, Covert Ops, Arkanoid, Tetris, Spear of Destiny, FROGGER, 007 for N64, 1942, Worms, all old Sierra games.. And Counter Strike, the same FPS I've been playing since 1998.
***** trade wars deserves a top 100 spot. -
