.... - Ruathal, on 10/11/2007, -3/+102For those too lazy to click:
#1: Ender’s Game – by Orson Scott Card
#2: I Am Legend – by Richard Matheson
#3: The Gunslinger - by Stephen King
#4: Starship Troopers – by Robert A. Heinlein
#5: The Eye of the World - by Robert Jordan - Dalrek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+78... A video game based on Ender's Game? Did they not read the same book I read? There is no way any game OR movie can do it justice. It's best left as printed text.
- McLumpy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+44Considering that Starship Troopers was published decades before Ender's Game, it's just you.
- mazz567, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39Ender's Game is one of my favorite novels ever.
- flamingmb, on 10/11/2007, -8/+41didnt they make a starship troopers game already?
- Tdrtnlz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28The game was based on the movie rather than the novel
- ImYourRealDad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26A game based on the Gunslinger...
I imagine what the tutorial would be..
"Shoot with your heart, not your hand (or press SQAURE)." - leontes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Mine too. I marginally preferred Ender's Shadow, as I relate to Bean a little more. Still, a great book, about compassion, power, pain, suffering. it's amazing that the author is such a bigot. However, paraphrasing from one of his novels, when incredibly smart people do stupid things (or act extremely stupidl), something is up and it's not all that appears.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Pride & Prejudice?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16I think there should be a redwall based game, I used to love those books with all the fighting rodents
- Axtech, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13HunterTV: I'm pretty sure they meant the series as a whole, in which case the first book would constitute one or two levels at most (Roland's exit from Tull would make for some good action, for example).
- leontes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I think the developer who is able to come up with a multi-user version of the "mind game" featured in the enderverse would become a multimillionaire.
Imagine a game that changes its structure based on your personality; the subconscious choices that you make. Imagine a interface that uses google and myspace to incorporate pictures of your friends, or manipulates experiences that you've had to controlling effect. Imagine the program making connections that you couldn't have predicted. The game could also create a personality profile of you based on your choices or choices you subconsciously made. Imagine the replay value.
Feasible implementation is a bit far off at this point, but it will come eventually. - empath, on 10/11/2007, -4/+175: Wheel of Time -- Already a game
4: Starship Troopers -- Already a Movie
2: I Am Legend -- Already a Movie
Agreed on Ender's game, though.
The gunslinger might make a decent Square RPG - NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12The Wheel of Time game would have to be an MMORPG. They both have no discernible ending in sight.
- TedTschopp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13How about Beowulf or Gilgamesh?
- RogerStrong, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Starship Troopers - A movie was already made based on, er, the back cover of the novel.
I Am Legend - This has been turned into a movie THREE times.
- 1964's "The Last Man on Earth" starting Vincent Price
- 1971's "The Omega Man", starring Charlton Heston.
- 2007's "I Am Legend", starring Will Smith. This is based more on the Omega Man movie than on the book, - wm2010russ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9i see ive found my fellow classics nerds- the iliad, odyssey, gilgamesh and beowulf all mentioned in the same thread? you guys are my heroes.
- Axtech, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8and the screen after you die would have to say "You have forgotten the face of your father"
- ai42, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I think Ender's Game would be a great movie however I'm not so sure about a game. It would just seam like some zero g FPS. Of course Ender made strategy part of it but I think that would be very hard to incorporate.
- aaron411, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I'd love to see "Guns of the South" as a game. Travel back in time and fight the civil war with UZI's!!
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7because we all know there aren't enough Star Wars games out =P
- DawningImage, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8or....new concept...someone could come up with a really cool video game without it being based on a book or a movie.
I would actually play Ender's Game though. HUGE fan of that book. - Gherald, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Any story covering Ender's Game gets a digg from me, but I do believe The Wheel of Time should be #1. It's the most epic fantasy I know of, except perhaps ASOIAF.
plug: A Wheel of Time Wiki, http://wot.wikia.com - atlacatl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy.
A mix of tactical and one-man-shooter stile game. Go prince Andrei... - PackerX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I hate to say it, but this list is pretty bunk.
1. The Wheel of Time video game turned the world into a first-person shooter where the only thing kept from the novels were the words. And if you're going to make a WoT game, it needs to cover several novels. Otherwise, assuming you play as Rand, you'd spend your time running from things that you can't fight and not being able to channel, which is easily the best thing about the series.
2. I am Legend doesn't have an interactive plot. You kill vampires while they're sleeping and stay inside at night? What fun!
3. The only thing that would transfer from Ender's Game is the Battle Room sequences, and since a lot of scenarios revolved around Ender "breaking the rules" anyway...
Here are my suggestions for replacements:
1. Battle Royale. Weapons, strategy, constant movement around the map, time limits, and multiple ways to beat the game would make this awesome. Bonus points if they make it so you can team up with other students, but be betrayed when circumstances warrant (e.g. a student gets his hands on a powerful weapon and doesn't need you anymore, time is running out and you need to die so he can live, etc.)
2. His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire). Napoleonic Wars fought with dragon-based aerial combat. What more needs to be said?
3. Elantris. A protagonist who has to learn everything about his life from start (WITHOUT amnesia), multiple factions, and a rune-based magic system (which would be perfect for the Wii or DS) means half the work is done for you.
I Am Legend? Really? - smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6How about the Bible? Maybe focus on the Old Testament? Let's see Jack Thompson protest that!
- DrMonkeyLove, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5"When the Deliverator puts the hammer down, ***** happens."
- amar5677, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I am Legend movie looks pretty sweet
- Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8"#1 - Wow
#2 - There are really
#3 - People out there
#4 - reading novels
#5 - OMG WTF LOL
pwnage!!1"
yes. it's called being well-versed. you'll probably still be wondering what that means in 6 years when you're asking someone if they want fries with that order. - l0tharnt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5A new Wot game would be good, the one they made was a tad disappointing coming from a big fan of the series.
- nathanwalker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Seriously, have you guys read the last book in the series? Lots of replay value to be had in a Gunslinger game ha.
- leontes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@ricree and others
I've heard that before: My experience of reading Ender's Shadow differs greatly from those that feel it is weak. I find it a compelling, reflective drama about a person who is extremely well developed cognitively, but whose abuse, trauma and personal flaws constantly inhibit his ability to be human. The book catalogues his struggles as he tries to prevail. I see the journey he goes evocative ofOdysseus and the other great hero journies. I've reread it more than I care to admit, just because I get something more from it everytime. I enjoy Ender's game as well, but not nearly to the same degree.
I see it this way: Bean is everyman+, while Ender's game is just one boy's journey. - supermanred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Starship Troopers would be very cool.
But a game where you could play as pizza dilvery man of the future, Hiro Protagonist from Neil Stephenson's book Snow Crash would be one hell of a fun game.
If you havent read the book, or heard the full audio book, check it out. Very cool future, funny read too. Great characters and it could all be played out as a video game. An FPS with a lot of driving and crazy manouevers through traffic. - SoKewl, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I love I am a Legend and The Gunslinger...to bad about gunslinger King has said on several occasions he isn't interested in a game to made on Gunslinger. It's a shame...I hope someone changes his mind. But I would look forward to either of this books to be made into a Video or perhaps a movie.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I always thought a Hindu epic like the Mahabharata would make a great adventure/RPG
- HunterTV, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich"
They couldn't do that game justice unless it shipped with an ice cooler to play it in. - SteeleyDan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I feel an Ender game would be extremely hit and miss. The games in the Battle Room and the simulator at Command School would make for a fun video game, but not much else from the book would translate well. Modern technology simulating the Ming Game would just be depressing because we can't do it justice yet. Plus, the book is so psychological that either story-telling would bog down action and make the game boring, or the creators would cut out those parts and butcher the story.
- OswaldKenobi, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4I nominate Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series as a game.
- Thumper13, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Beowulf if done correctly would be a great game.
Based on the actual story, and not some stupid modern interpretation of it.
It is one of my favorite stories ever. The basis for so many things. - Fr4nk2012, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4They'd also have to find a way to kick the ***** out of you if you missed
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I agree, but my top 5 would be:
1) Foundation Series- Isaac Asimov
2) Seven Deadly Wonders - Matthew Reilly
3) Abarat - Clive Barker
4) Neuromancer - William Gibson
5) Torg RPG
That is all - Renuvian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3There was a Wheel of Time computer game a few years back. It was actually pretty fun, but had basically nothing to do with the books. It was an FPS with a bit of storyline... definitely should have just made an RPG but I think they wanted to do something unexpected.
- Toshibi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, but I would just Rift in my Nightspawn and Robotech Characters.
Damn, I'm old school, I even used Nightspawn instead of Nightbane! - fantasticFlan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Catcher in the Rye, an adventure game with no discernable goals.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not sure about Ender's Game being a video game. But the zero gravity game that all the students play... now THAT could be an awesome multiplayer game. Imagine clan wars and the like, leagues, ladders etc.
- BlackGuySpy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How about "A Clockwork Orange" as a game? You listening, Rockstar?
- rsbrown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Neuromancer, 1989, from Interplay, on the Amiga -- my favorite game ever.
- ImYourRealDad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'd rather play through the Icewindale Trilogy.
- schnitzi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How about:
Philip Jose Farmer, "To Your Scattered Bodies Go"
Piers Anthony, "Split: Infinity"
Jane Austen, "Pride and Prejudice"
Er, scratch that last one. -
