- CL0UDSTRIFE, on 01/08/2009, -7/+56The silent protagonist?
Or eight hours per cutscene of your protagonist talking about what you knew before anyway?
Plus, I think that the Zelda games pull this off nicely- Link stays mute but he still has a personality.
Agreed with all square though. - excalipoor, on 01/08/2009, -6/+51i dont see why having a silent protaganist is bad. look at persona series. they are just fine.
- Czaja, on 01/08/2009, -1/+35Gordon Freeman is a silent protagonist and he's far from irritating. In fact, he's what many of us would aspire to be: a MIT grad with a PhD in theoretical physics who runs around demolishing ***** with a gravity gun.
- chaosblade77, on 01/08/2009, -3/+34BS at silent protagonists. Sure, it's a dated concept, but back when games were more simple it wasn't a bad idea. The entire purpose of a silent hero is to allow the player to put their own inflection on the character, which would hopefully make the character likable to a larger number of people than if they gave the character a direct personality. If you asked four fans of Chrono Trigger to give a detailed explanation of Chrono's personality, all of them would have a lot of similarities, but overall be quite different.
Some games and series still pull off the silent protagonist fairly well, but as a whole I think it's a dated concept, not a bad one. - Halsfield, on 01/08/2009, -1/+27honestly i liked FF8, squall reminded me of when i was younger. A little bit of a loner, a little bit angry at everyone and everything, a little bit awkward around women, but squall came around because of his friends and so did i. If you really want to hate ff8 for a good reason hate the draw system or the way you had to constantly switch between the modern time and the past and go through the same damn areas over and over. It still had some really good fight scenes (two gardens clashing anyone?), amazing summons for its system, and the supporting cast of characters was great even if you didnt like the main character. To give squall a little bit of credit you might be an angsty , unhappy, loner too if you were an orphan that never knew your parents, and the only person you really knew growing up (his sister) left him at an early age. so while you may think his attitude sucks, and it does, its realistic for his background(aka he's not being an emo kid thats angsty just to be angsty).
Tidus on the other hand(and even moreso vaan from ff12) was incredibly annoying. I couldnt stand how he looked, acted, or how they made the worst character with so many other interesting characters the main one. they basically took zell dincht (the bareknuckle brawler from ff8) and made him a little wussier and gave him longer hair, took away his clothing, and bam, tidus + vaan.
I'm hopeful for ff13 , i think they went a different way than 10 and 12 did with their main characters from the looks of the game, but here's hoping they got better, not worse.
- Ziak, on 01/08/2009, -0/+22It happens in the first 2-3 hours of a game not really a true spoiler, now the spoiler that Chrono is really a robot ninja that's a huge one.
- mwalker05, on 01/08/2009, -2/+24truth be told the game would have been better if Laguna were the main character
- Falldog, on 01/08/2009, -3/+23So what's probably the best RPG of all time has the worst type of protagonist? Hmmm, I'd gather the list might be off...
- AirRaven, on 01/08/2009, -2/+20I quite liked Squall. =\
As far as protagonists go, he wasn't bad in the least.
Giving absolutely *any* of the supporting characters any depth whatsoever would have been a definite plus, mind.
Selphie? Zell? Apart from singing songs about trains/being an idiot, they had nothing particularly distinguishing about them at all.
Even Link's got more personality than FF8's Supporting Cast put together. Such a waste of a fantastic world. - teamr, on 01/08/2009, -4/+22Seriosly. And whats with putting a picture of Crono on there? Crono is a badass. How the hell do you put him above Tidus and Squall?
- Halsfield, on 01/08/2009, -1/+18exactly , he wasnt being emo (aka being angsty for angst's sake), he lost everyone he ever knew or cared about. Even when he bonded with a new person in the orphanage (his sister ellone) she left him too. If you were in that traumatic of a situation that early on you'd probably be a little messed up and not want to be around anyone either. Plus he came out of it near the 3rd disk i believe and became a badass gunblade fighter.
- Enasni1212, on 01/08/2009, -0/+17If you're halfway through the game, you should have reached the trial by now, and long past it.
- GramarNazi, on 01/08/2009, -5/+21Cait Sith
- xxMorrissey, on 01/08/2009, -1/+17They forgot to mention that Tidus looks like Meg Ryan.
Search your feelings; you know it to be true. - glendower, on 01/08/2009, -2/+17"I got stuck with chicken-wuss and some guy who just reached puberty..."
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+16Utterly lame.
- Darkangel754, on 01/08/2009, -3/+18I sort of liked Squall...at least he had a legit reason for being anti-social, unlike many other whiny JRPG characters.
- nixpix66, on 01/08/2009, -5/+20...I liked sora..
- Darkangel754, on 01/08/2009, -4/+19At least Squall got his ***** together by the end of the game...Cloud still whines to this day
- elryanoo, on 01/08/2009, -6/+21Link and Crono are two of the best rpg characters ever and they never talk.
- Enasni1212, on 01/08/2009, -0/+14He's not a protagonist...
Also, stay a while, and listen. - roxya, on 01/08/2009, -9/+23Squall was worse than a silent protagonist, though most of the time he was actually silent.

"...whatever"
Why didn't SE make just one likable character in FF8?!?! As if Squall wasn't bad enough, you give us Zell?????? IRVINE?!?!?! - arcticblue, on 01/09/2009, -0/+13Neither can you evidently. And this isn't that cesspool known as 4chan.
- explodingtree, on 01/08/2009, -3/+16Crono is the man. He wouldn't bitch out on Marle during the trial (at least the way I played it), he ***** stabbed a metal dragon to escape a castle, he faced down the terrifying gurus in their captive demonic state, oh, and lest we forget, he destroyed a giant ***** crab shell with the power to essentially eat the planet from the inside out.
- PleaseJustDie, on 01/08/2009, -0/+13dude the death sentence is very early in the game, like 2-3 hours...
Remember returning from the past the first time and Chrono gets accused of kidnapping the princess and even if you do everything right and end up being acquitted by the jury you still get sentenced to death so you have to escape from the castle. - IHaveCrayons, on 01/08/2009, -3/+15Hey! I liked Squall, I thought he was cool. Also I thought Zell was funny. Geez, what's the big deal hating on Squall? If the characters didn't have flaws they'd be boring.
- Kosh, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12Your quote was mark twain. :)
- MercFox1, on 01/08/2009, -3/+15This article is a ***** abortion of a list. 3 of 5 are from Square? Someone has some teen angst spilling over into their gaming.
- ashthecarcrash, on 01/08/2009, -6/+17'...Whatever.'
- EnflamedDaemon, on 01/09/2009, -1/+12Even seen the Zelda TV show? Be glad Link never talked during the games. It would have made you cry.
- mwalker05, on 01/08/2009, -2/+13mario never spoke in Mario RPG and i would say its my second favorite rpg. but there are games where it is clearly a copout for character development.
- aargh01, on 01/09/2009, -0/+11Damn right. And let's not forget Alyx Vance. To be honest, I was hoping this list would be populated with every female lead from FFVII to now. They're all puss-ass, useless characters with stupid healing powers, and every single one is such a cliche, I-need-a-man-to-survive, virginal, girly girl. For god's sake, they made an entire game (FF X-2) out of an Otaku's wet-dream of what a girl should be: scantily clad, ridiculously upbeat, vapid bimbo school-girls.
I'm no feminist sympathizer, but it's way past time where this level of chauvanism engages me in any way.
I felt more emotional connection to Alyx Vance within fifteen minutes of her first appearance than I have to any character in the last five Final Fantasies. It's pretty sad when a First Person shooter with a silent protagonist has better story telling and character development than the best RPG series ever made.
But then, every game developer except for Valve has pretty much given up on the idea of a well-written story (or creative gameplay, for that matter). All that matters to them is graphics and DRM. - kingmanic, on 01/08/2009, -0/+11I hated Wirt. Glad he died. Stupid money grubbing cripple.
- aithk608, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10zelda games are more action/adventure than rpg...
- xZongx, on 01/08/2009, -2/+12"recent playthroughs of Chrono Trigger only serve to remind us of a certain main character who doesn't even.."

"DON'T YOU BLASPHEM IN MA HOUSE! GET OUT!" - Shadic, on 01/08/2009, -1/+11"Final Fantasy never had good characters from the start. It just got prettier."
...Final Fantasy 6? - Arramol, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10There are much bigger events in that game that could have been spoiled. I'd list them, but, well, that would spoil it.
- BananaStickers, on 01/08/2009, -3/+12Top 5 Most Irritating (Japanese) RPG Protagonists
Do we get an American version next? - Zarokima, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=209
- Zarokima, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9He has an inferiority complex due to an incident during an elementary school play in which he couldn't remember his lines. Thus he tries (and succeeds) to make up for it by becoming a hero, even though his fear spread from public speaking to conversing with anyone.
- lukas88, on 01/08/2009, -2/+10Have to disagree with the silent protagonists one. It is a role playing game. You should be protesting your own death out loud, throwing things at the screen and mashing buttons accordingly.
- jedinate, on 01/09/2009, -1/+8The only one I completely agree with is Squall (although I've never played #4 so I can't judge that one). I loved FF VIII the game, but not so much the characters. In contrast I LOVED the characters in FF IX, probably my favorite cast ever.
- kitaro53085, on 01/09/2009, -2/+9Liar. Pikachu refuses to evolve unless you trade him off to someone else, in which case he'll stop following you whether he's evolved or not.
... nerd. - DrumDog2112, on 01/08/2009, -4/+11Squall received the #2 position partially due to him being anti-social? Go ***** yourself, 1up.
- canada42, on 01/09/2009, -0/+7Ah, but an RPG character he is not. Don't get me wrong, Gordon Freeman is honestly one of my favorite characters in any game ever, and valve are incredible developers for the half-life series, but its still an fps, not an rpg.
- TheDreadDiggerD, on 01/09/2009, -0/+71. Vaan
2. Vaan
3. Vaan
4. Vaan
5. Vaan - Zarokima, on 01/09/2009, -1/+7Meh. The beginning was kind of annoying, but I liked how they tied it up. Sora having a nobody certainly makes sense, though, since he became a heartless in KH1. With the introduction of nobodies Sora's not having one would have been a big continuity error.
- Darkangel754, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6Squall DID have a reason, his parents abandoned him and when he finally started to open up to Ellone at the orphanage she was taken away.
- Volath, on 01/09/2009, -1/+7I heard the original plan for FFXII was to have Captain Basch (sp?) as the main character but higher ups in Square basically threw a fit that he wasn't young and androgynous.
