- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33New Super Mario Bros uses a 3D engine if you look at it.
- CaptainEO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Most gorgeous 2d games ever, as seen in these gorgeous 250x150 sized images!
- Clark3934, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22They'll learn when ad providers stop paying per view.
- nTensify, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21..spanned across 5 pages!
When will web writers learn? - airolson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@nTensify
True, but they mean games that don't use any 3D rendering techniques to create the art (i.e. pixel painting by hand). By your rationale, any game that doesn't use a holographic display of some sort (which of course is all of them) could be considered a '2D' game. They're all rendered to a 2D surface. - davidv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I was gonna flip out if Guilty Gear wasn't on this list, best 2d fighter eva.
- TubaFrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Could they have put less effort/research into this "article?"
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Great, what about the other 4 pages?
- Kimi3013, on 10/12/2007, -1/+95. LocoRoco
4. Lumines
3. Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story
2. Metal Slug franchise (Metal Slug 3, 4, and 5)
1. Guilty Gear franchise (console games) - Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is this you Kypt?

:) - davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7But this is a lit for the best 2D games, not the best 2D with some 3D...
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No flashback? The animation in that game was stellar for the time, and still is in my opinion.
- def1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Earthworm Jim, man. Earthworm Jim.
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7No Shadow of the Beast?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_of_the_Beast - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I'm sorry man but Lumines to me is the next Tetris. I didn't think it was possible for something so simple as "squares" could be so addictive but I fell in love with it.
Now, as to the other games u mentioned u might have a case :) - devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Give me a break, Metal Slug should be number one, and anyway what about RPGs, like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 3? What about top-down shooters like Raiden Fighters? How about Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? Come on, LUMINES?!
- timbudtwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They were only trying to sound groundbreaking. Sort of like the previous article on hardest NES games, except this one sucks. Most Top "anything" lists are garbage.
- ptoast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So... '2d' means sidescroller all of a sudden?
Where are all the adventure games? - malenfant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't understand why you and a couple of others have been modded down, but I wholeheartedly agree - Donkey Kong Country should be up there.
It's 2D graphics were and still are awesome! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5http://www.duggmirror.com/gaming/Top_5_Most_Gorgeous_2D_Games/
- ThrillSeeker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Shadow of the Beast for the Amiga does need an honorable mention. It was way ahead of it's time with both their audio and video effects and art.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I really think the Donkey Kong series should have been on there. While the sprites may have been 3D models to begin with, the engine itself was not 3D, and they were, in the end, sprites.
Metal Slug is a great game (one of my favorites), but it doesn't qualify as "beautiful" to me (probably because killing Germans isn't exactly a pretty act in itself).
And...Yoshi's Story? Didn't that use 3D, but in a 2D environment? I can't tell from the irritatingly-small screenshots I'm finding, but I could have sworn it was. If it is, then that opens the door to other sidescrollers that use a 3D engine. - ylikone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn right! The youngins don't remember the old Amiga classics. Heck, some beautiful and playable games came out in those days. PC games where nowhere yet at that time. I loved my Amiga. Sad that it died and the crappy PC took over.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hell yes, one gaming mag went so far as to proclaim in as the "Game of the Decade" all the way back in '94. Earthworm Jim was both incredibly fun and visually stunning. Great pick!
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No alien hominid, no COTN:SOF. BAd list. Lumines? Come on, the games pretty but doesnt deserve to be up there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. End of list.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Where's Alien Hominid by The Behemoth (shepherded by Tom Fulp of Newgrounds).
- brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yikes where is legend/secret of mana?
- triforcer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yea where is earthworm jim, that game looked fantastic and still holds up today. no donkey kong country either?! and the luminez on there?! while the game looks good it doesn't go with the side scroller theme they seem to define 2D as, or else we would have had a buch of top down rpgs that are 2D.
bad list. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Come on, the page breaks weren't *that* bad. They were logical, splitting with each game, plus they even put the introduction on the same page as the first (5th?) game. We've all probably encountered sites that would've gone so far as to span each game across two pages.
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gish, of course, deserves mention here.
- nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I was gonna say the same if Yoshi's Island wasn't on the list.
- mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where's Jets'n'Guns?
- wolver1ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Metal Slug series is the best 2D.. end of story.
- Hearshot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Donkey Kong Country series ftw
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Lumines is the only PSP game worth buying. I wish it came out for the DS...
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2site down? need a mirror ... or someone just post the list
- windex99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, this site has a lot of ad's. I'm never going to this site again.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah... I figured that out right after I posted and tried to click on the second page.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nethack! Nethack!
- Factionrider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Veiwtiful Joe should have made this list.
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Earthbound was UGLY. I cannot disagree more with you right there, but as for independent games, wheres the alien hominid? GISH? Ridiculous
- concreteclam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes! Really. I was pretty surprised SOTN didn't even make it on the list. It also has some of the most disturbing and gruesome bosses I've ever seen in a game, which gets major points.
And what about all the old LucasArts games? Full Throttle? Day of the Tentacle?
Donkey Kong Country also should be on there. Feh. - ThndrShk2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3--- Well if they meant that, they really put their foot in their mouth with their first choice of the article: "Nothing about this game is 3D, yet its 2D characters appear to be 3D characters moving within a 2D space." ---
Not really, they're just saying the stunning visuals of the character sprites look 3D, thats all. And so, if reworded would be: "Although this game is a 2D game, the characters in this game seem to present a 3D feel"
--RTFA guys.. The first game #5 uses a 3D engine.--
Where does it say that? - NotBlaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not to dogpile on Lumines, but that's so out of place it's absurd. Without even trying, I could list several 2D games that are better looking than Lumines. Top of my head;
Alien Hominid
Garou: MOTW (I have a NeoGeo arcade machine and the game is gorgeous, even for the ancient hardware.)
Anything Capcom Street Fighter Alpha and above (particularly the Vs games)
You could run down a stream of shmups including;
GunBird2 (though it has some 3d)
Bangaioh (small sprites, but hundreds of them. Very good looking in motion)
Ibara
Guwange
etc.
Between the Dreamcast and Saturn you'd have no problems bringing up at least 10 more.
Not to take anything away from the game, because it's an awesome game, but it doesn't belong anywhere on that list let alone at number 4. - cows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Crazy. Geometry wars is amazing looking!
- sixlocal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No love for the classics...
Ultima 7
Rex Nebular
Sam & Max (or pretty much any Lucas Arts adventure)
Space Quest VGA
Argh! - AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bangaioh (small sprites, but hundreds of them. Very good looking in motion)
One of my favorite games, cant find an iso or the game anywhere though... - FishRHuman2, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Okay, I haven't read it yet, and I'm not going to unless Odin Sphere is on there
Oops, never mind, all I see is a big ol' 404. - CopyNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guilty Gear is the sweetest thing ever, all my friends are so good at it, its just ultimately stylish. To bad i really suck at it.
