- tjdoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Now I do agree with most of this list, but the people (person) who set up this list seem kind of esoteric in the idea that most of the games are 2D RPG's. Sure there were games like Starfox, but I would have loved to see the music of Mario 64, Half-Life 2, even Bomberman 64 up there.
Great list though. - nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I really liked Mario 64's ending song, too. And Sonic 2. Oh well, this is a pretty good list.
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10OMG! He picked my favorite for #1! Freakin sweet!
I seriously have always declared FF6's ending to be THE ultimate ending song to any game. The reason? Because it combines the best ballads and all of the character's songs into one big thirty minute ensemble with slight variations to them that link them all together perfectly. This is a great song, everyone should listen to it and apprecaite the different themes. You can almost define each character by their tune the music in this game was so good. - No1nose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think "he' is "she': http://www.flyingomelette.com/aboutfo.html

makes me cry :'(
the final boss aswell.
http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sega/genesis/s2finalboss3.mid - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9He's dead on with the #1 spot. That game ending was beautifully satisfying.
- m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -1/+7The lack of Sonic in that list really invalidates it for me.
- DesEagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is a very good and comprehensive list, but what's with the current-gen and last gen hating? Being a huge FF fan, I thoroughly agree with 6 being ON the list, but 4!? I've listened to the top 3 pieces countless times, but I still don't think any one of those three match up with some of today's ending themes.
Examples? Well...
FFVIII's ending theme had the BEST rendition of the classic FF symphonic theme, if any of you don't know what that is, it's the song played in the ending credits of 7-9.
FFX's ending theme, despite not being composed by Uematsu, had the emotional aspect spot on, with Tidus disappearing and what not.
Fantasia alla Marcia, KHII's ending theme, is the rightful holder of the best ending theme ever in a video game. Thanks go to Yoko Shimomura for that one...
And the list goes on. Point is, you don't only find good music in the classics. In fact, most of the music of that day pales in comparison to today's music. But it could just be me hating on the bleep-bloops of the Nintendo era. I personally like it when music in games reaches near-concert hall quality. But enough of my rant...enjoy the list. - Skunkhair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I gotta give props to ocremix... http://www.ocremix.org some really great remixes of video game music. Good find though if you're looking for some original soundtrack stuff though.
- NoHardFelines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd say...
Metal Gear Solid
Ocarina Of Time
Nights Into Dreams
Shenmue
Jet Set Radio
(the ending music and soundtrack in general deserve a mention for how they defined the feel of the game) - BlackSheepx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I really like the megaman 2 and 3 endings. Most of the songs on that list have awesome OCremixes.
- Durinthal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Others have noted that he left out a lot of more recent games, though I will also agree with the #1 pick. I do think that Super Mario 64 and especially Ocarina of Time deserve spots on there.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Excellent - and I'll second the first place choice.
Other video game soundtracks here and here:
http://www.zophar.net/music.html
http://robosexual.typepad.com/glob/2005/03/nintendo_entert.html - Durinthal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It was actually Mitsuda that composed the ending theme to Chrono Trigger. Uematsu had other tracks in the game, but not that one. But those two along with Koji Kondo are definitely among the best in the industry, and Jeremy Soule's probably the best western game composer I'm aware of.
- greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4here's the list of most of all video game music:
http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks.php - cnull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Fun list... but I can't really imagine a list like this being complete without some mention of the Katamari Damacy series. That's the only video game where I could -- and have -- gladly listened to the ENTIRE soundtrack.
- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good list. definitely with him on the #1, though some others should have been mentioned in my opinion. FF6's ending still gives me happy tears.
- uncleLeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3earthbound...don't really need to say much else
- mzkw, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Yep... Sonic 2 should've been on the first places...
- DougTanner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OMG Crystalis, the original StarFox, FF2, MegaMan 2! (FF Mystic Quest lol?) Games good enough to bother spending hours and hours dying over and over, and days spent power leveling so you could clear the next area!
That said, I'm kind of embarased at the number of the other games on that list that I've played and never beaten T_T
Edit: The Starfox tune is by far the most recognizable IMHO - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm surprised that he left off Streets of Rage's ending music. The whole game has great music, but the ending was even better.
And why does he call Super Castlevania 4 overrated? It had the tightest control (and far and away) the best music of any Castlevania game. - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These are console only, not computer games included.
- dubloe7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and nobuo takes all top 3 positions, no surprise there from one of the best composers of all time.
- mikeslemonade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Menu songs and theme songs are the best. Ending songs are too slow for my taste.
- ukrdigerati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, just wow. i thoroughly enjoyed that. would have liked to see top 100 with all the ones we are suggesting... but ff6 is just great. well done... diggggg
- michaeljh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Merry Christmas
http://rappo.gtagaming.com/michaeljh/Super%20Mario%2064%20-%20Staff%20Roll.mp3 - mongrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What, no CONTRA?! Is this a sick joke?
- Narpas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now, that had great music, but I recall the ending was blah. Heck... if you didn't say anything, I would have thought SC2 didn't have ending music.
- UnConeD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Meh, all consoley.
Here are two excellent game soundtracks, available online to boot:
- Planescape: Torment - The awesome RPG that no-one played, from the infamous Black Isle Studios. It's a pity they tend to hover around the same theme and are not nearly long enough though (composed by Mark Morgan).
http://www.planescape-torment.org/soundtrack/
- Beyond Good & Evil - The action/adventure/sneaker masterpiece from Rayman-creator Michael Ancel. Best enjoyed in game... but the major themes are all wonderfully composed (by Christophe Heral)
http://www.stormeffect.com/beyond/index.htm
Now, if someone knows where to find the soundtrack to Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy in the US), I'd be a very happy person. - Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's with all the downvotes on the comments for this digg? Do some people not know how to accept others' opinions?
- pfister_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I really liked Mario 64's ending song"
Me too. Was there a single game on the list that wasn't from the NES or SNES?
I'd vote for Ico's ending theme as the list-topper, myself. - terrenceisdaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What about Sega's Nights into Dreams? -- That was a really cool ending song -- anyone?
- JamesBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FFVIII, while not the greatest game, takes the prize for best game music ever IMHO. Check out the Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec arrangement album and behold FFVIII's glory.
- wonkavsn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The list had many of my favorites in it. The ending theme of Wanderers From Y's was really sweet back in the day.
FF6 (3 at the time) and FF4 (2 at the time) were my two favorite games back on the SNES and their rankings as 1 and 2 respectively are well deserved.... This guy I know totally teared up at the ending...
FF6s ending did not disappoint. It made me think of a game as being a work of art for the first time.
If this were a ranking of complete musical scores, Castlevania 4 would have been closer to #1 (for me). - JamesBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Metal Gear Solid deserves a mention for its ending song. Way better than Xenogears' cheesy song. God... how did that ever make the list?
- just2cool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1infernoskull, I was searching for the same thing.
Click "download mix" on the right of this page:

Although it's not an exact replica of the actual ending, it still sounds damn good. - jumjum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree on Crystalis. Great game, and the music (and accompanying imagery) was the perfect ending to it.
- 022A, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good choices. I'm not all bothered by the lack of current-gen songs on the list. I haven't played a game or heard music that impacted me like some of those on the list in 10 years. I have played most of the games listed though.
For personal reasons, I would have liked to the Street Fighter II credit roll theme though. - JPamplin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I'm sad that great games from the PC world weren't included. Anyone remember the ending song from Homeworld 1? Composed and performed by Yes. It was pretty good.
JP - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i like the Death of a Legend and Credits/Basilisk Mine Field from Ninja Gaiden :D
the Xenogears music isn't bad either - pfister_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since the Super Mario Land ending was written by Hip Tanaka, and he's obviously a fan, I'm inclined to think he's just never played it.
- bocoaot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol, Halo
- cd_RW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1right on with NiGHTS. excellent ending, shouldve made the list. ESPECIALLY the secret ending theme.
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes. Earthbound.
- vaxguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Golden Axe and Prince of Persia (the first one) bring back some great memories =P
- dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1aww c'mon, what about "Outrun", the sega racing game. Oh, and its technically ending music... The Mario Kart Rainbow Road tracks.
- @nival, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmmm, some are good, but Metal Gear's "Rika Muranaka - the best is yet to come" is a great song, I even got it in my ipod, I really thought It would make the top 10. Shame on them for missing that one.
- forumreader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@CharlesDarwin
Isn't Crystalis #10? - Wormwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anybody else having problems playing the MIDI files on this website? I'm downloading them, but they seem to be in some "RIFF" format that I've never seen before. Anybody know of a good cross-platform player for this container format?
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone who clicks that link gets 403'd... just fyi
