#1 America’s Army
Nobody knows military simulations like the world’s premier land force, the United States Army. So, when the Army began making the America’s Army game to provide civilians with insights on Soldiering from the barracks to the battlefields, it sent its talented development team to experience Army training just as a new recruit would.
#2 Warsow
Warsow is a free standalone first person shooter game for Windows and Linux. It is based on the Qfusion 3D engine (a modification of the Quake 2 GPL engine), and aimed on the competitive scene, or the e-sports community. Warsow is developped under the motto “by gamers for gamers” by a team coming from all kinds of gaming backgrounds.
#3 Wild Metal
Wild Metal (1999) is a 3D strategic vehicular combat game set in a distant land, in which you command armed roving vehicles to disrupt dangerous automated military units that have overtaken the Tehric planetary system. While it flew under the mainstream radar when it was originally released, it was critically acclaimed for its unique yet intuitive control schemes and its massive open world to explore.
#4 Afterburner 3D
Afterburner 3D is an excellent fanmade remake of SEGA’s classic first-person shooter Afterburner. The game features excellent 3D graphics, great special effects, and even a nice soundtrack to round things off. If you don’t have fun flying jets and shooting others down you’re just not right.
#5 Wolfenstein Enemy Territory
The year is 1943, and the Nazi War machine threatens to not crush Europe, but the rest of the world as well. Unknown to the general public, the fate of the free world often lies in the hands of a select few heroes, members of the Office of Secret Action. You are one of these legendary protectors of freedom, B.J. Blazkowicz.
#6 Flight of the Amazon Queen
Joe King is the hero of this point and click adventure. His plane is carrying actress Faye Russell when it crash lands in a remote jungle, and he must battle through 100 screens of adventure and puzzle. The game’s feel is influenced by hammy B-movies, and the characters are quite stereotyped and comic.
#7 King’s Quest 3
All 16 color backgrounds remade into stunning VGA graphics. Enhanced Close up cut-scenes and dialogue pictures help immerse you into what is known as the first plot driven chapter of the King’s Quest series.
#8 Maniac Mansion Deluxe
Remember the salad days of PC gaming, when there were graphic adventures as far as the eye could see, and LucasArts actually did something besides churn out Star Wars stuff? A group of devoted fans remembers, too, and have remade one of the greatest (and funniest) games ever made.
#9 Ultima IV
XU4 is a remake of the computer game Ultima IV. The goal is to make it easy and convenient to play this classic on modern operating systems. XU4 is primarily inspired by the much more ambitious project Exult. XU4 is a cross-platform application thanks to SDL; it’s available for Windows, MacOS X, Linux and more.
#10 Trackmania Nations
This special version features a brand new environment, the Stadium, and a revolutionary new gameplay designed for Nadéo’s own custom cars. With the online ingame ladder, players can customise their cars and avatars and race in their nation’s colours on the world’s servers from Friday onwards.
#11 Swine
S.W.I.N.E. is a real-time tactical strategy game in which you must carry out extremely varied missions while taking advantage of the terrain and your units’ special abilities. Your army’s abilities and strengths will then develop over the course of the game. Before and during the missions, you will also have the opportunity to purchase or sell units, and upgrade or augment them with various items of equipment.
#12 Xenon 2000
In this top-down arcade shooter, blast away meteors and your enemies, while collecting power-ups for weapons upgrades etc. Eliminate the end level bosses to clear each level. You know the role with this. It’s basically the game you were addicted on and had the top score at your local game room.
#13 Harmotion
Harmotion is an “effects” intensive player vs. player, top down 2D classic shooter (aka shmup). You face the opponent from the bottom of the screen and the objective is to outlast him/her in a short 3 minutes space fight. Each fight will be a one of a kind collaboration between the two opponents; a collaboration of sound and colors.
#14 Retro River Raid
River Raid is a 1984 Activision game that is counted among the better shooters. After all these years it remains as a favorite and is among the first games mentioned when asked which titles are remembered most fondly. So if you’re into the old eighties shooting type games, here you go.
#15 SWIV
SWIV 3D is a 3D remake of the original SWIV. It features a voxel-based 3D engine and mission-based play, as well as a myriad of new enemies and completely new style of gameplay. It plays a lot like a typical 3D shooter: you control a helicopter which you must navigate through landscapes, all the while shooting at buildings, vehicles and other planes or helicopters and fullfilling your mission goals.
#16 Mono
Utawareru Mono is split into adventure parts and simulation RPG sequences. You play as Hakuoro, a masked man who lost his memory as the result of some great injury that he incurred in a village on the frontier. Hakuoro is unable to remove the mysterious mask that covers his face.
#17 One Must Fall
One must fall is a classic example of the mid-nineties beat’em up! Its simple, fast paced and addictive. With one exception though, this one actually has some kind of plot, and a pretty detailed and interesting championship mode.
#18 Secret Maryo Chronicles
Secret Maryo Chronicles is an Open Source two-dimensional platform game with a style designed similar to classic sidescroller games. It uses the platform independent library SDL and, since version 0.98, the OpenGL accelerated Graphics Renderer.
#19 Scorched Earth 3D
Scorched 3D is a game based loosely (or actually quite heavily now) on the classic DOS game Scorched Earth “The Mother Of All Games”. Scorched 3D adds amongst other new features a 3D island environment and LAN and internet play. Scorched 3D is totally free and is available for both Microsoft Windows and Unix (Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Solaris etc.) operating systems. Winigolf - A minigolf game.
#20 Winigolf
Another decent 3D mini-golf game with a total of 36 holes. If you like playing golf or golf games, then you’ll surely love this one. It’s really just a typical golfing game were you put around and try to make the shot. - pepperpotts, on 11/21/2007, -5/+45I have been praising "Internal Server Error" all year!! It about time others noticed how awesome this game is!!

Also, insert obligatory "diggs do not equal visits" comment here. - Cerebral, on 11/21/2007, -0/+17YEA ET! That game has a huge community still(although mostly overseas Europe) but still. That game is the first game I download on any PC I build, buy, fix and upgrade to both give it a good workout and have some fun.
IMO It's one of the best FPSs ever. The reason is the objective based TEAM gameplay. It's not like TFC or TF2 where you have different classes that can DO different things. It takes that idea further and has classes that are REQUIRED to win the round. For example only engineers can plant/disarm dynamite which would be a requirement to winning the round. Not to mention the maps are not setup to just plop everyone down to capture control points or get the most kills. The maps are designed for linear objectives (e.g. capture the command post, plant dyno to blow up wall, plant dyno on both anti-air guns to win. Or steal the tank, escort tank to bank entrance, steal both gold crates and load them onto the truck, repair the truck and then escort the truck to the exit). Tons of fun, great community, great mods (JMod, Shrubmod, etpro and no quarter) and great user created maps that are both fun and challenging (Helm's Deep, the one christmas map etc.). I think that ET is one of the most underrated games ever simply based off the fact that it was free and a little behind the times graphically (still is but the gameplay is amazing and the fact that it is behind graphically means that you can play it on almost any machine).
Sorry for the fanboyism but I can't get enough of this game. - accessviolation, on 11/21/2007, -0/+14I tried but I couldn't edit your comment =(

Okay, just thought I would warn everyone who was thinking about getting the it after reading that post. - hokeywebb22, on 11/21/2007, -3/+14It wasn't a list of games released this year. It was a list of the most popular this year.
- borchard76, on 11/21/2007, -1/+11I'm sorry, that's friggin hilarious.
- accessviolation, on 11/21/2007, -0/+10FEAR Combat is also free and quite fun. Maybe not top 20 material in everyone's book, but certainly in mine.
- SinisterDexter, on 11/21/2007, -0/+9The author of the list might not know about the game. I'll bet he does now though. That's one of the reasons why I like Digg and other communities, when a list like this gets posted there is usually one or two people that say "XYZ is not on the list!". It may seem like a troll against the list and the author, but if you look at the core it's not.
- africansk8er, on 11/21/2007, -3/+12You probably know Zero Punctuation for his funny reviews, but he makes games too. His latest one, the Art of Theft, is pretty kickass. Plus it's free.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/games/yaht ... - jon404, on 11/21/2007, -0/+9Try Frets on Fire http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/ for a free Guitar Hero alternative.
- TeleKawaru, on 11/21/2007, -1/+9I totally agree. I usually get more from the comments than I do from the article itself!
- Imortus, on 11/21/2007, -1/+8If Dwarf Fortress is not on the list, then the list itself is flawed.
- vertinox, on 11/21/2007, -1/+8Apparently they were using free web hosting too.
- bagboyrebel, on 11/21/2007, -0/+6Friends don't let friends play WoW.

- frostbyt, on 11/21/2007, -0/+5As long as you play Horde
- psg188, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4I wish you'd format your post better, but I agree. ET is one of the most fun games I've ever played.
- bonesbrigade, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Yes, F.E.A.R. Combat is better than more than half of those games on the list, not to mention a few free MMOs and, of course, Super Mario War, one of the best free games I have ever played. And where's Streets of Rage: Remix? This game is free and has an awesome updated soundtrack that is also free to download. While this list is fairly well done, some of the omissions confuse me.
- KraftDinner101, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3I would give it top 20 status. When compared to the graphics and gameplay of the other games, it's definitely worthy.
- Toshibi, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Killing Spree!

working mirrors. - TheWriteGuy, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2That Afterburner fan made game is pretty neat. You don't need a 3D graphics card to run it. It runs pretty well on my pokey notebook here.

- SpectralSounds, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Scorched Earth. I remember playing that back in highschool CAD class on DOS. On the just released, kickass 486 66mhz.

- TheZorch, on 11/21/2007, -1/+2Freespace 2 SCP (Source Code Project) is a free re-release of the original Freespace 2 game from Volition using a heavily revised graphics engine with OpenGL and OpenAL support, realtime environmental dynamic lighting and other enhancements. The Windows, Linux and Intel-based Mac OS X versions are available at www.hard-light.net.
- AhrenBa, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1No WarRock?? That game is awesome!!
- spyrochaete, on 11/21/2007, -1/+2Stay away from all Nadeo games for this reason. It's a damn shame too as they're a great games studio, but they're stubborn and they care more about your money than your satisfaction or the safety of your computer.
Nadeo sells at least one game on Steam which means it won't have Starforce, but I boycott the company anyway. - WtrMan, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1I got so excited to see the Utawarerumono game on the list since I just finished watching the whole anime series. But unfortunately the Utawareru Mono game (Mono) is not actually Utawarerumono in any form and doesn't follow the description at all. It's just some colorful shooter. Needless to say I was VERY disappointed.
- Cornrider, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1America's Army! Yeah! Awesome! Get excited about enlisting in the army, get your face and limbs disfigured and blown up and have George W. Bush go visit you, offer a t-shirt and pat your back on your way to homelessness! YAY HOORAY
- spyrochaete, on 11/21/2007, -1/+2Kind of a stupid list. Doesn't even mention Dungeon Runners which PC Gamer Magazine gave about 90%..
Here's a link to a blog I learned about from a previous Digg story. It's got tons of free PC games and I like the writing style of the blog itself.
