- nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41It seems more like of list of 13 changes rather than improvements.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27yeah it does say "Top 13 *Changes* & Improvements to the DS Lite"
But it's the originals poster's fault for incorrectly tittling the post. - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28They left out how the top screen doesn't have the ugly black box around it. Nobody seems to mention that one.
- vatchea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@Plague64
I really don't see how you'd be able to accidentally hit the start and select button while using the new DS Lite.
And you over-generalize DS Lite users, the change of AC connection isn't a big deal. I for one don't mind the cartridge sticking out slightly, and will be adding the GBA SP to my pile of retired systems. Though if it used to the same connector, a backup charger wouldn't be a bad thing... - PiratedTVPro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The higher wattage means that on the lower screen brightness(es) the battery will last longer. That is a big deal, especially to those who frequently travel with out Lites.
Also, the stylus is not only longer, but thicker as well, and makes for a much more substantial stylus. It's 1000 times more comfortable to hold than the old stylus, at least for those of use with man-hands. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Sound is worse??? I thought the sound was F'ing fantastic. The surround sound effects in NSMB is frickin crazy.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Hitting start or select accidentally is nigh impossible, especially since the buttons require substantial force to depress, at least 2-3 times as much as you would for the ABXY buttons. Plus, they depress partially before registering the final 'click'.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11To sum up the article, "DS Lite Is Dyno-Mite!"
- Alaerus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I did not buy the original DS, and for that now I am glad. I picked up my DS lite yesterday and I can't put it down. This was definitely the coolest thing I have bought so far this year (well, except for my new TI-89 Titanium...).
I would highly recommend this product to any fans of handheld gaming. Plus the rumor mill says that this will work in tandem with the Nintendo Wii......
I have seen the lite!!! The DS lite!!!! - Ludwig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The thing I've been most impressed with is how great this thing sounds.
- Leadhyena, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8bugfaceuk: They need the new adapter because the battery outputs at a different wattage and thus the adapter needs more amperage to charge it correctly. Actually, I'm appreciating that the battery lasts longer, especially if you take the brightness one step below _glaring_. :)
And masamunecyrus, you must be deafened by your IPod because I think the sound actually is better, more clean and defined than the original. Not to mention that your diagonals won't work well until you break them in after playing for a day or two.
That said, I agree with plauge64 in that I really don't like that they got rid of the hole for the wrist strap... I saved my old DS numerous times because of that strap, and I'll need to be much more careful with my DS Lite. And the movement of the start-select buttons is MORONIC! I was playing Lostmagic this morning and flinched every time I had to pause, because I kept hitting where the start button USED to be. - nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Best new feature:
not having to remove the pink warranty sticker on SL1 to reflash the firmware. You know what I'm talking about. - mikeyeah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I got my DS Lite yesterday and what a fine piece of handheld equipment it is. The 2 main things I like the most, besides the obvious new ipod-like look, are:
1) The feel of it in your hands is so comfortable. It just feels balanced, unlike its predecessor.
2) The screen is so bright! So bright that it makes the handheld experience that much more enjoyable.
Bottom line, go buy one now. Stop reading, go now!!! Get off your lazy ass and GO!!! - EgoDemens, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I disagree. If you're having a hard time with the sound you must have a defective unit or severe hearing loss. Either return it, if you can, or invest in some headphones as you're most likely pissing off everyone around you with incredibly loud game music.

- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Top 13 Problems with the original DS:
13) The volume switch wasn't white to match the console.
12) A form-fitted dummy cartridge wasn't included to cover the GBA slot.
11) The headphone jack was in the same spot, but it wan't rounded or good looking.
10) The power switch wasn't located on the right side, wasn't white, and wasn't a slide style on/off switch.
9) The stylus wasn't larger and was stored on the top.
8) The left and right flipper buttons weren't recessed to form fit the corners, and didn't provide a tactile click when pressed.
7) The power and recharge LEDs weren't on the top right front corner.
6) The Start and Select buttons weren't underneath the ABXY buttons.
5) The microphone wasn't on the center hinge in between the two screens.
4) A thumb-stylus wrist strap was included and useless.
3) The original DS only had a 5.2V 1.6W battery.
2) It's power connector was planned to be incompatible with the future DS Lite.
1) The DS had a dull screen. - naitsirk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6the article mentions that the wrist strap w/ thumb stylus is gone; but my DS Lite (which i bought from Liksang in Hong Kong) came with a "normal" wrist strap. Isn't this included in the North American version?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16Are you inbred? The DS Lite has a plastic casing over the paint, which makes it look like an Ipod. Big deal. They didn't take CORE FUNCTIONALITY of the iPod and jam it into the DS, *****.
- Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, I totally want to punch people like that, they bug me. Grrrrrr.
- bugfaceuk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Um, it looks like a mini-macbook... Hating the power adaptor changes, our kids are frequently saved by the fact that several generations of their consoles use the same charger.... grrrrrr.....
- Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As opposed to the old d-pad which pretty much didn't register diagonals at all since the parts you had to push were so far apart.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Well, it looks like this "review" is just the opinion of a single person, and therefore some things he believes as improvements could be seen as inconveniences by others. I'm pretty sure the power connector had to be changed to fit the smaller form factor of the DS Lite, as the original connector was kinda big (the old one was almost exactly as large as a regular USB connector, while the Lite's connector is very similar to a mini-USB connector)
It really breaks down to this. The DS Lite is brighter, looks nicer, is a lot smaller, and it has better battery life than the original. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Major improvements... definitely. The D-pad has a much better feel to it, but as mentioned above takes a little more force to register diagonal movements, which is a little disappointing. The buttons "float" a bit more and register presses from a wider array of angles than the old DS buttons where if you didn't press straight down things got messy. Moving the D-pad and buttons toward the top makes the unit a lot easier to hold, doubly so for games where the shoulder buttons are necessary.
The higher quality screens don't distort as bad when viewed from the side, which along with the massively increased brightness is a huge plus, especially in situations where someone is watching you play over your shoulder. I'm neutral toward the speaker changes. It still features a fine speaker, and the volume is quite loud unless you're in an extremely noisy environment, where you'd want to use headphones instead.
Battery life seems just fine, and the ~3 hour charge time is equally acceptable. - djgump35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3its 14 if ya count the size change, but who's counting?
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4even though it's blog spam.........I will say that my DS lite does in fact have a dead pixel on the top screen. Looks like Nintendo will be honoring that one year warranty for me :)
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It was not. :-(
But if you'll notice, the insides of the Japanese DS game cases are also slightly higher quality. - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have you never played Metroid Prime Hunters? Best way is with the thumbstrap. I'll be taking mine from my Fat DS and putting it on the lite for sure.
- lokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I find that the sound on the DS Lite is just fine, but I do notice that the volume levels appear to be different between the DS Lite and the DS; the DS Lite appears to be a little louder at a lower volume setting, perhaps accounting for the muffled audio complaints from some users.
As far as the directional pad, I find it to be quite a bit more responsive than the older DS. - aximbigfan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4im quite happy with my orig ds. and ALL dsses will be able to connect to the WII through wifi, not some "expension port" like the artical says.
- aximbigfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2funny you should say that... i have one stuck pixel on the bottom screen on my ds orig. although when i checked just now i cant see it... weird...
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love my new DS Lite so much it's scary. It's just so damn beautiful, not only on the exterior, but New Super Mario Bros. just looks so much more crisp now...no time to comment, I have to get back to this beautiful piece of hardware.
But seriously, the problems with it are just nitpicking compared to the good points. I actually can carry this one in my pocket! It's a hair thinner than even my cell phone, and it evens out my pockets well: an iPod Mini and cell phone in one, DS Lite in the other. Finally, balance! - jmc730, on 10/12/2007, -0/+213) The volume switch is now white to match the console.
I don't know what version of the original DS he has, but mine the bottom part IS black so it already matches... - TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure why plague64 was dugg down. I have a DS lite and I must agree with everything he said. Especially the last one. Perhaps, plague64, you DO have to explain that one, but I'll do it for you.
WII AND DS CONNECTIVITY WILL BE WIRELESS. There will be no special port, and why would Nintendo render all of the normal DS systems not usable with the Wii? Stupid, Stupid article. - ephyew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They could have put some extra work into the online experience. Ugh, what a hack job. Every game is different online. Tetris is horrible online. Why can't I play 2 players with items? The bannana rocks. Why does it take forever to get enough random people to play a game? Why are the mini games in NSMB not online? So that I have to buy the same games again when they do support it?
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2By the way, does anyone what they moved the pink sticker onto to cover? Is it more important than SL1 and why?
When I looked at the location of it, i thought i'd never be able to flash (before I realised that SL1 was still in the same place) - Wedgieman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4There is still a hole for a lanyard strap, they just dont include a strap. Its back there, you have to look for it.
- orb_nsc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The new DS Lite looks great, but no way am I going to go out and buy one to replace my original DS. It's fine for me, and the price I'd pay for new DS lite, I could buy a dozen actual GAMES. How many of you are so hardcore you buy each iteration of the hardware?
- JDoggqx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought a DS Lite after my wife kept stealing my DS and Brain Age. I'd get on the train for work and my DS wouldn't be in my backpack.
I did trade in credit card reward points for a $100 Circuit City gift card so that the DS Lite only cost me $37. I did the same thing for my DS when I got that, so two DSes for about $70, I think that isn't a bad deal at all. - miestersean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just may buy a new console-type thing now.
- sporkman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nintendo ALWAYS changes their systems after launch, it gets alot more people to buy them.
- pingviini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still wait for the day that my Ti-89 Titanium has a touch screen and I need a DS Lite for AP Calc.
I might be able to justify spending that much on a DS Lite at that point in time.
Not that 130 is a lot of money, just I don't have a job currently. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my only complaint is that the L R buttons are easy to accidentally hit... especially when adjusting the volume
- osc1882, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I went with my friend yesterday when he bought one of these and I can really say that I really really want one. It looks so damb sexy and the screens are unbelieaveable in action.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You carry that much anywhere in your pockets? Boy you must look like you are packing heat. Do the girls ever get the wrong idea?
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my only complaint so far is that the matte-plastic is prone to absorbing dye-- a few minutes in a new pair of shorts dyed the plastic.
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When you refer to batteries - the mAh (milliAmp hour) is more interesting than the watts and volts. Is this not so?
- christoffer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When the DS lite launches in Europe, June 22, there will be two colors available. White and black.
- Wedgieman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gamestop in my area is giving $70 towards the DS Lite if you trade in your old DS, so my DS Lite only costs $70 after Tax.
And, yup it was worth it, Metriod Hunters and Castlevania play so much better on the brighter screen and better AB-XY buttons - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those bastards. Are they going to reward me with the DS Lite because I was a loyal Nintendo handheld lover and bought the original the week it came out?
They should, the jerks, - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No everyone bought the original DS
