- otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Um, wow.
As a former gamer, I'm going to be blunt so that I may protect you.
Spending hours playing games in college will lead to your demise. College is great in that you can chill 24/7, but it's also just as easy to fall behind - and fail. If you pick your college based on it's "gaming factor" Internet connect-ability will be the least of your worries...
I agree with Tetra, a ranking about game-developing schools would be far more enlightening. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Rayor
No, you can't testify. That's hearsay. - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6well top 10 american universities anyway....
i thought it was the top 10 for gaming development courses.... which wouldn't be a bad list to compile really... :) - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My girlfriend and I*
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Digg me down if you must, but someone looking for a college can't seriously be looking for a "gamer school" in their checklist. IMO it should be an "icing on the cake" type thing - not something in your top priorities.
- mewtwoEX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wooo! Go RIT! The article got some things right, but there is plenty to do in Rochester...maybe...not really.... Anyway, there are plenty of gaming opportunities, just balance them with school please - otherwise you won't be there long.
- Tetragrammaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The important thing to know here is that this list is for the gamer, not the aspiring game developer.
I was interested at first, since I hope to enter the gaming biz. This ranking, though, was clearly not for me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Supprisingly, I'd give this list some credibility simply because DigiPen & Full Sail are on there, even though they're not big population wise.
However, I'd disagree with the rankings. With the exception of DigiPen & Full Sail, I doubt that every single student can hear two notes from Super Mario Brothers and then join in singing the tune. DigiPen is on the Nintendo campus, and literally next to the Microsoft campus. If that's not the most perfect location for a game school, nothing is. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Would be nice to see an international ranking.
I know my university (Swinburne University of Technology, Australia) offers a games programming course and the ability to specialise in games programming in other courses. The ICT faculty also just invested in a couple more Xbox 360s and games :). - Destinatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Days: "If you want to be in the game industry, pick one of these schools." That's a very general and inaccurate statement.
- andrethegiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Isn't U of Texas at Austin the #1 party school as well?
- SambekZX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I went through this in my freshman year. I couldn't handle the unfettered freedom to play games where there were no externally imposed requirements to show up to class, study, do homework, etc. And back in 1995, there was no CS or WoW. It was just stuff like Command and Conquer, Quake, and Mechwarrior 2 played over a LAN. I was a 3.98 in HS, and dropped to a 2.7 in college. I spent the rest of my college years playing catch up, but I was lucky to have roommates that kept my addiction in check. If you got the self-control and discipline, then more power to you. If not, then don't play games in college, especially the MMORPG's.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember reading on Digg that the University of Washington is the top school for World of Warcraft players. Boy do they rank colleges for everything nowadays.
- lozaning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@settra
do tell ping master - Rayor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can testify that it is the #1 party school because several of my relatives have been there.
- Gollywomp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, the last i heard it was.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51.) DigiPen
2.) Full Sail
3.) Everything else is crap.
When your school has instuctors from Nintendo, Microsoft, Westwood, Bungie (Pre-MS), Sierra, LucasGames, etc. feel free to add to this list. - DeathSun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay, I actually went to Full Sail for game design. It's not that special.
You're better off just getting a computer science degree.
Full Sail would be great for audio students--I mean, that's what the school started off as--but game design and animation...it's just a lot of flash.
It's worth noting that we have more bitter students then anyone else. - Trevino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Where online gaming is generally free on the PC, it costs $10-$15 per month to play over Xbox Live, the only real console gaming service in existance."
Actually xbox live is $50 a year or $4.17 a month. - mikEdub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How does PSU manage 2nd when you can't even have Xbox Live in the dorms?!?
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digipen is much more than just 'a college that happens to be located in Redmond near Nintendo and Microsoft and is primarily for game design.'
DigiPen is, more or less, the official college of Nintendo, and it directly affiliated with them. Nintendo -owns- the main building on their campus, and, if I'm not mistaken, Nintendo also provides funding support for DigiPen. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, let me go into a bit of detail about why DigiPen is better than Full Sail.
Full Sail has (until just recently) had only a 2 year course. DigiPen has had a 4 year one for many years. You're simply not going to be able to learn as much in 2 years as you are in 4. (And the number of credit hours at DigiPen is really closer to the equivalent of 5 at a normal university).
In addition, as I've stated above, DigiPen is located in the center of one of the three largest locations for game development in North America. If you want to learn, you need to go to where the industry is.
Also, DigiPen has been around far longer. They've got the kinks worked out of their system. Newer schools still need to experiment to get a feel for how to best teach students. - mahmoodsdotjpg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hi guys, author here. a lot of people are getting hung up on the game design thing--in reality, it was a lesser factor for consideration than "culture" (such as LANs, tournaments, things that facilitate gaming like fast connections..etc).
anyway, glad some liked it, know some will hate it, and constructive criticism is welcome. - socbret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I live in Austin and go to school, the sheer number of 18-25 year olds you see outside during the day within a 4 or 5 mile radius is enough to make you believe that ranking has to be true.
- SpaceCow!, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Temoc!
- FistofJohnWayne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Forgot University of Texas at Dallas. UTD Whoosh.

"One former 'Quake 3' player from UVA had a single-digit ping all along the East coast."
hells yea he did!
go hoos! - StammesOpfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1care to share those commands????
or were you just blowing steam - webtickle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This blogger had an interesting view point on the subject. He goes to one of the schools that made it on the list.
http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/08/30/top-10-colleges-for-gaming/ - socbret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1UT-Asia...I mean UT-Arlington.
- shammond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute wasn't mentioned. They have a great gaming program - and a lot of sweaty nerds.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You'd be surprised. Some kid who has everything given to them and doesn't give a crap probably would chose based on which school is best for gaming.
It's good to know the U of MN is on the list too. Home-state represent! - jefflundberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Glad to see U of M - Dearborn on the list. I happen to run MPCon. :)
- ubergmr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this narrows my list down to 10
- TheWestExit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That one really wasn't for playing wow. It was for visiting the wow website, a very distinct difference. And even then it was only for ips that travel back to the campus not to who actually goes to the college.
- SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$10-$15 a month for Xbox Live???
- avidlinuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, UTD's mocap lab was even used by iD.
- 0zzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GGL! :).
- sunyata322, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What could the problem be that I don't see any content on the link? Everything is there except the article. I'm using Firefox with filterset.g and whitelisted it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1:heart: RIT's connection, I can vouch for it
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh.
Where the hell is Champlain College in Burlington, VT?
Electronic Game Design, Programming, and 3D graphic design are all 4-year majors here.
Full Sail is crap. If you talk to people in the industry (which I have, thankyou for not believing), a lot of studios look at Full Sail as a hindrance, and won't hire you if you go there.
I'd rather go to DigiPen, but Champlain is great. - Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone on the UVA network was able to play games online? That was probably the best part of moving off Grounds. LAN speeds are great in the dorms... but I never had any luck playing outside of the network.
They do have a cool Gamers Club, though. - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I flunked out of my first class ever because DOOM got released.
Ironically, the class was assembly language programming.
Bittersweet. - anion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Troy's even more miserable than Rochester, though...if Rochester got a 1, Troy'd get like a -4.
- Days, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Destinatus
Sorry, let me clarify. If you want to be in the games industry, no matter what college you choose (or choose none at all, but its a lot harder without a degree to break in), work hard at what you study, and make the most of your education.
I was marely stating that I worked hard, and got a lot out of my education, and now I am in the games industry (I am a gameplay programmer for a major company). Not all Full Sailors (Not even a majority) are bitter about the school, as the parent suggests.
And I still get dugg down for the comment. What a bunch of douchebags. - SnOwie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i think our school is also qualified, the geek school @ belgium :)
playing all kinds of games during classes on laptops. - outhouseinput, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm surprised that the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor isn't on the list...it surely beats Dearborn...
- jizzimmy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's a shame I'll be starting school at the University of Washington right after I quit playing WoW. Or is it?
- superzorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quite doubtful. Such things make me a bit crazy
