Cyan blew my mind as a kid. - happytheclam, on 10/24/2009, -3/+23This should be renamed. 1 website that is destroyed by it's advertising.
- iamsmooth, on 10/25/2009, -1/+20Shadow of the Colossus definitely gets first place. If you haven't played it yet, I strongly urge you to go buy it. Should be $20 on Greatest Hits for PS2 :o
- sputnikv, on 10/25/2009, -2/+16the amount of architectural, musical and artistic research done for bioshock must have been epic. the ability to create atmosphere and invoke emotional responses like that is artful
- norman619, on 10/25/2009, -5/+19The definition of art is in the eye of the beholder.
- biergutlol, on 10/25/2009, -1/+15A dude can ***** on a chair and call it art. How anyone can not consider any videogame art is beyond me.
- CourageWulf, on 10/24/2009, -2/+13All relative to their time though.
- Fukanzen, on 10/25/2009, -0/+10While i wont dispute there are videogames i'd classify as art, the list was a little odd at times.
- odxWallz, on 10/25/2009, -2/+11Approach art? Are you kidding me? Video games are almost nothing BUT art. Everything you see on screen, an entire team of people spent thousands of combined hours working.
- MatzahMan, on 10/25/2009, -2/+11Half Life games arn't about graphics as they are gameplay and environmental interactions (puzzles, physics, etc.)
- jman583, on 10/25/2009, -9/+17Final Fantasy VII = Meh.
- elbarto89, on 10/25/2009, -3/+11Just happy they included a valve game
but wheres Half Life 2? - naturalrhythm, on 10/25/2009, -3/+11videogames are already art, and wouldn't the definition of "art" vary from person to person? I think anything that takes such a huge amount of creativity and dedication as a videogame does should be considered art. And as if Mass Effect wouldn't make the list, if not for the visuals than for the storyline/universe.
- basickly, on 10/25/2009, -4/+11"Approach art" hah.
Games are the *****' pinnacle of art.
So much artistic expression goes into a video game. There could be more beautiful or relevant art than your art gallery of choice just in the CONCEPT art for a game.
A game is often an epic collaboration of 100s of the BEST artists to bring together a glorious vision that could not even hope to be approached in other mediums.
How some could still not consider games art when we're this far along is ridiculous. - kinerry, on 10/25/2009, -1/+7Exactly how?
It's interactive, it can pull you in like no book or movie ever will.
It's the superior medium when it's actually used as such.
Play some real games, then get back to me. - volacide, on 10/25/2009, -0/+6Why because Ico was more cryptic and less fun to play than Shadow of the Colossus?
I was actually quite impressed with this article. Sure there are plenty of other games that could also be considered more "artistic" than most games in general, but as a whole, the selection here was pretty good. Doesn't at all feel like he was catering to what he figured "people on digg would know." - U83RMENSCH, on 10/25/2009, -1/+7even though source blew every ones mind when that ***** came out? about the graphics.. no.. but in its time.. it was the *****.
- cyrix, on 10/25/2009, -1/+6I'm excited for the game as well....but it's not approaching art.
- anchorman84, on 10/25/2009, -1/+5At least for me, Uncharted 2 set a new precedent to in-game animation, especially in terms of facial expressions. The attention to detail, and just overall believability, rivals any Hollywood CGI films based on a realist style (Anything Zemekis, e.g. Beowulf, The Polar Express, and the upcoming A Christmas Carol). That says a lot for an in-game engine.
- BradOFarrell, on 10/25/2009, -2/+6Should read "games look prettier now." There were tons of NES games and even arcade games that could've been described as "art", depending on your criteria for art, obviously. And a lot of them worked within the limits of their technology to create aesthetically pleasing graphics and sound.
- dandaman0345, on 10/25/2009, -0/+4It isn't out yet.
- BBoombastic, on 10/25/2009, -1/+5It isn't about graphics. Games are about experiencing something. Most of the games on that list are "artistic" because they look good or sound good. HL2 puts you into a world you know nothing about and tells YOUR story. They created a realistic environment where the background story isn't handed out to you through cut-scenes and lengthy dialogue. You experience it.
- biergutlol, on 10/25/2009, -2/+6It ***** is. You have no sense of aesthetic
And evem if it were bad art, it would still be art - Tiptup300, on 10/25/2009, -1/+4No Silent Hill 2, ***** you AskMen, you're a terrible website anyways.
- kingmanic, on 10/25/2009, -0/+3They are pretty but vacuous.
- rjbeckjr, on 10/25/2009, -2/+5Buried for no Mother 3. Of everything that I've played, Mother 3 is the only game that I could sit down and deconstruct like a novel or a film. You could say that these games looked good and carried a message, but there are very few that can be thoroughly analyzed on a level comparable to other accepted media. While some of the list is good, like Braid and Bioshock, the rest is lackluster and more fitting of other games.
- Terwa, on 10/25/2009, -1/+3I also hate how this article mainly focuses on physical beauty. I guess storylines and character development don't matter, right? If that was the case, writing shouldn't be considered art either. Honestly, I think all games can be considered art, and this article's title made me cringe because of that.
- basickly, on 10/25/2009, -1/+3<--- Just beat Mass Effect.
- dandaman0345, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2I actually never played it, I always hear that it was really good though. I bet I could find it for really cheap now.
- dandaman0345, on 10/25/2009, -2/+4Not to mention the story lines. Many people just look at the meaningless violence that you can occupy yourself with in GTA 4, but the story line is actually very well written and even shows hints of an underlying pacifistic message at parts.
- ban1d0, on 10/25/2009, -0/+2Dugg for Grim Fandango, one of the most brilliant games I ever played.
Also, although I don't play it as often as I would like to (only played 2 months and quit because it's too much time-consuming), but Eve Online is one of the most beautiful games I ever played, the ships concept, the environments and even the music, they're all in another level. I also felt the same with the Homeworld games. - basickly, on 10/25/2009, -0/+2This cluttered composition is supposed to make you claustrophobic, this blue color scheme is supposed to make you somber, this scathing satire is supposed to make you angry...
This urinal is supposed to make you reconsider, this sculpture is supposed to inspire awe, this story is supposed to remember...
Also, since when was not making money a requirement for art?
I see where you're coming from, but if you believe game developers can't be passionate about their game, and can't believe in the vision they're presenting to the public you're wrong. Most people that work on games are there because they love it, not for a paycheck.
99% of artists make their art with some regard for profit, otherwise they wouldn't be able to eat.
And just because you may have to create mass appeal with your game, it doesn't mean that it does not also appeal to the game's creators.
As far as this comment is concerned:
"Lets say I painted a painting and stepped back and looked at the finished product. This painting would be something that means something to me. I would have used colors I liked and it would have content and subject matter that spoke to me. Then I could take that painting and turn it to the world and people could look at it, criticize it, admire it. Some people would get it and some people wouldn’t while some would project their own interpretations on it. The meaning of the painting would change with each viewer."
All of that applies to gaming/development 100%!
You can't possibly argue that it doesn't.
There's been an industry made out of game criticism and opinions on a game vary wildly.
People look at games, they criticize them, they admire them.
Games mean things to people and speak to people in different ways. I can attest to that personally. Some games are life changing. If you haven't experienced a game that moved you in some way, you haven't played many.
The idea that for games you're a passive participant, but for a painting you're not doesn't make any sense either. Hell, in games you're a much more active participant than you are looking at a painting. You can affect the game world yourself in ways that the developers may not have even intended.
All you can do with a painting is look, and consider. You can't go in and mix the colors around to suit you. A painting can also affect you in a way the artist didn't intend. It's no different for games.
As much as you can put in a painting you can put into a game a thousand times over. Every building, every model, every palette, , every character, every surface, every script, every MOMENT is a work of art in itself.
I just don't think your arguments hold any water at all, no offense.
And whether or not Hideo Kojima said that, he is either being modest or he is just mistaken. It's clear that he pours his heart and soul into his games. It's a passion, not just a paycheck. - j035u5, on 10/25/2009, -1/+3Mass effect should so be in that list. If the same plot was in a film, the same character development, the same metaphors of alien race relations for human race relations, no-one would argue whether it was art.
- fishbeef33, on 10/25/2009, -0/+2People said the same about photography for many, many years. There are still some critics out there who don't think photography is an art on par with painting or sculpture.
Keep in mind that, in the fine art world something isn't "art" until some wealthy snob is ready to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for it. I've seen copies of Radiant Silvergun go for a thousand bucks on ebay, but that's not quite high enough. - kinerry, on 10/25/2009, -1/+2san andreas surpasses it on every front but graphics
- MonkeyNews, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1It's because, yes art is everywhere - but "High Art" such as paintings, sculpture, cinema, music etc are seen by critics/experts as a different class of art - a higher form of art if you will.
Some people believe games don't qualify as "High Art" yet. Remember, cinema at one time was also not considered High Art. - AmazingSteve, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1No Deus Ex? Really?
- schuenator, on 10/25/2009, -1/+2Ok, seriously, I love Shadow of the Colossus just as much if not more than the next guy. But I am so sick of everybody talking about how artistic it is! It's like whenever somebody shouts "Videogames and Art!" the only answer we ever seem to hear is "Shadow of the Colossus!"
- volacide, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1You don't think MGS4 was better than 3? I certainly do. I'm an enormous fan of MGS but yeah, I happen to think it goes 4>3>1>2, they're all incredible though.
The thing about ICO is it really doesn't play well as a game. It's extremely clunky, a beautiful imaginative game no doubt, but SoC is far better. - giz0r, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1Dugg for Braid, wonderful game.
Oh, and Portal too! :) - biergutlol, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1"paintings, sculpture, cinema, music etc"
a videogame consists of all of these things
people are stupid. - biergutlol, on 10/25/2009, -1/+2I was gonna write that post
completely agree, and every single artist out there will too - aronnyc, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1I couldn't agree with you more. SotC is turning into the Citizen Kane of video games--a game that's under-appreciated but also leads certain players to take on airs of superiority if you don't like it as much as they do.
- FFandMMfan, on 10/25/2009, -4/+5Buried for Final Fantasy VII. Oh sure, it's a good game, but the mere thought of it being "art" is laughable.
- pablocastel, on 11/25/2009, -0/+1That is a very lame comment...
Art requires technique and complexity, even though something simple can be art sometimes. What you say is only reduccionist-trying-to-look-cool kind of comment. Give me a break! - DavidGX, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Buried. Continuing this argument is pointless, it just suggests there still actually IS one. Of course games are art, anyone who's played some really amazing games already knew that. Stop this already.
- NeoTechni, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1Every game that ever used artists to make 3d models, textures, sprites, or writers to make the plot, or actors to make the dialog or motion capture, is art.
Pardon my run-on. - DarkWhitty, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1Oddworld....? Even has its own artbook out
- Anji-Mito, on 10/25/2009, -4/+5ICO was a much better representation of art in gaming. Another World more so.
The guy who wrote this should pick games that actually approach art, not games that he figures people on digg will know. -
