- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46Umm...what about Bad Dudes? Ninjas kidnapped the president, and when you save him by (mostly accidentally) beating up a whole bunch of "ninjas", you go grab a burger with him? Shouldn't even be a top 10 list; it should just be Bad Dudes 10 times.
- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39Lame. The author seems to confuse "plotlines" with "characters" and "settings". Grim Fandango had an odd setting, but the plotline was not bizarre in any sense of the word. And I'd say the storylines of Final Fantasy 7 and 8 were more bizarre than the story of FF9.
- uncleLeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29what about earthbound?
any game where you are fighting new age retro hippies and win by praying should be on that list! :) - spencewah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Both Grim and Monkey Island represent games with fleshed out characters, settings, and storylines. When playing them, one will not find themselves thinking "WTF?", but rather, "how could beauty this perfect be so underappreciated by game consumers?"
- xocomil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Bad Dudes was weird, but I think #1 should go to Custer's Revenge.

If raping indian women because you lost a war isn't a messed up plot line, I don't know what is. - LunarOcean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"a dwarf named Vivi, with nothing but two bright eyes and a shadow for a face "
More commonly known as the classic visualization of Square's black mage. Sheesh.
"This odd collection of characters provided a different Final Fantasy experience from both VII and VIII which earnt it a luke-warm reception in the gaming world."
Not really. The overall experience of most FFs remains similar. Just because the characters are different (and these "weird" characters sure seem like the crew we get in IV, V, and VI) doesn't mean that the game is radically different from its counterparts.
I'm not sure where this guy is getting his information - a lot of the games he listed had plots that were fine. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I concur. And Super Mario RPG's gigantic-sword-falls-into-Bowser's-castle-and-makes-an-evil-factory storyline is much more bizarre that Metal Gear's, IMO.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18FFIX was a classic Final Fantasy. Had it been released under the name, "FFVII," everyone would have loved it because it was just like a new Final Fantasy, as opposed to VII which was like a new game. Moreover, all of the kids that started out playing games on the PSX wouldn't have the "firsties syndrome" that they have with FFVII. I really don't see how FFIX is any different compared to FFI-VI in terms of weirdness.
And I really don't know why they included DOAX. - NJank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12and the name. my god, the name. Bad Dudes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15All your base are belong to us!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12This list is void without the addition of Killer7. This guy knows nothing of plots but seems to think twist endings, weird characters and surreal settings are the basis of a crazy plotline.
Killer7 should've been number one, for sure. - hypnotizd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@Rayonic
I'll have to agree with you. FFVII and FFVIII were by far a lot more bizarre than FFIX. The whole time compression thing in VIII still confuses me. - bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Anyone else old enough to remember Maniac Mansion?
That plot was as screwy as any non-Katamari game on the list. - spragg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Sure, they talk about Metal Gear, but they talk about the relatively sane 1 & 3. No mention of Sons of Liberty at all? I'm still trying to figure that one out.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10ecco the dolphin:Defender of the future end of discussion........

- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Earthbound is the best game to ever come from a bunch of possible crackheads. I have no idea how to better state that thought.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Michael Jackson's Moonwalker.
Ow! Whoo~! - rocketnick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Shenmue needs to be removed from that list. That game was not only a masterpiece of design when it was released, but it is also an epic tale. It isn't finished yet, but that doesn't mean it has a Bizarre plot.
- eddyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"If only Lucasarts was still making games of this quality, the world would be a better place."
A-*****-MEN , why, oh why has lucasarts given up on its adventure franchise, Grim, Monkey island , Full throttle, Sam + Max and Day of the Tantacle are quite possibly some of the best games ever made. Its probably just easier to make a ***** of starwars games I suppose, Cant wait for A Vampyre Story to come out - erissiva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree that *any* of the Mother (Earthbound for Americans) games would have been a great addition to the list. Although, I must agree that Katmari Damacy should be in first-place. Such a bizarre and wonderful game. Sometimes I'll sit down and play it for 5-6 hours without even realizing it.
Plus, I remember there being quite a few games for the PC that were absolutely wacky. Like 'Cosmo's Cosmic Adventures' or the 'Commander Keen' series. - crom99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Postal 2.

Yes, that's Gary Coleman with an assault rifle. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed. Same Guy made both Grim Fandango and Psychonauts btw.
- harryd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Agreed with Rayonic. Stuff like Darwinia should be in this list, not Monkey Island.
- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The single most messed up video game plot of all time.
Street Fighter 2010 For the NES!!!!
This game has nothing to do with the original street fighter series, Capcom somehow got the naming rights and changed the title of this obscure game (ala super mario 2) and named the main character Ken.
The plot starts off with Ken's best friend getting killed in a lab by some unknown person, ken's friend had been doing a lot of work with 'cyboplasm'. So anyways, you're off to avenge this person's death traveling from space world to space world battling all sorts of space mutants who got this way through the spread of this cyboplasm. The dark overlord big boss of the whole game is F-ing with you the whole time, mocking you, and somehow making you feel pain because apparently your superpower, you find out, is actually derived from cyboplasm as well. The alien battles go on for quite some time and it really is a really amazing game for the NES, although somewhat difficult to learn and master.... Anyway, you make it to the end guy and low and behold the main boss IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. The enemy is the person you spent the entire game trying to avenge their death. Not only is that messed up enough as it is, but obviously you have to kill this person to win. Talk about a plot twist.. not to mention the fact that you're thinking man, Ken is probably pissed he wasted all of that time trying to avenge someone's death whom he ends up having to kill, and then you're like 'wait, shouldn't i be pissed about that as well?' and then you're like 'oh well'
in order to be able to beat this game you will need a lot of time on your hands, definitley some friends or roommates willing to help with the challenge, and probably some weed. I got good enough at this game that I can beat the entire game without dying once and it is probably the single hardest nintendo game I have ever played. I owned the game for 12 years before actually getting any use out of it or even completing the second level because it was so difficult.
Highly reccomended.
One that also probably comes to a lot of people's minds is Ninja Gaiden. I always tried to follow the plot when I played it but I could never keep up with all of the FBI and everything else they were trying to throw in there.. - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Battletoads?!
- Chicito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Zelda games for the Phillips CD-i. The faces of evil, The wand of Gamelon, Zelda's Adventure.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm waiting for "most drawn out game plot" so I can scream injustice when Soul Reaver/Blood Omen isn't included....
- dspickes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Psychonauts?
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Lets face it, DOAXBV didn't have a plot. It was just an excuse to get the women from DOA into bikinis and exercise the "jiggle engine" that had been perfected by Team Ninja. Complaining about the bizarre plot in DOAXBV is like complaining about the plot in, well, frankly, pr0n.

Ive never looked at the world the same after having the ability to set someone on fire and then piss on them with my STD infested penis and then light them on fire again all so i can chop there head off with a shovel and kick it down the street..............What a messed up game but it was seriously fun - Sturmwind72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These articles always seem like fillers and an excuse to drudge up some old games and invoke nostalgia. This article didn't even really do that. Screenshots with a couple of glib comments shouldn't qualify as game reporting. There are so many strange games that have been put out, I can't imagine how Dead or Alive: X-Treme Beach Volleyball would ever make the Top 100...let alone Top 10. This article is lame.
- TheKingInYellow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8vivi wasn't a dwarf. no digg.
- osc1882, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This list sucks my dragon balls. The writer seems to only have knowage of video games made in the last four min. Non of these top ten of all time encludes the 700+ NES games, or SNES or sega gen.. or. so on.
Next time hire me and I'll make a real list... no wait... I'll be busy playing me NES or my SNES. - Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@hypnotizd:
Whenever I hear the phrase "time compression", I visualize God using WinZip in some unimaginable cosmic way. Like he's going to click-and-drag the fourth dimension.
What really annoyed me was when you learn that all the main characters lived in the same orphanage as children. Those flashbacks were like an episode of Muppet Babies. - robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3MGS2. It was great until the end where they had to throw in all these plots behind plots behind plots at which point the game really started to drag on.
- Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Any of the Ecco games could have fit easily on that list. I still remember playing one of them on my Genesis. It was extremely hard, AND THEN you had to swim up streams of water into the sky. That game made no sense at all.
- NapoleonGold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Katamari is definitly a good #1 spot
I'm just glad that Monkey Island made the list - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3only for 2 player :)
- johnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i was going to mention that. Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle. One of those two needed to be on there.
- xenoploid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Killer 7 story synopsis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_7#Story
"Shinji Mikami has been quoted saying, "Me and Goichi Suda [the writer] are fond of plotlines that are 'Open Ended,' and what I mean by that is, when you first play the game you will think, 'What-Just happened?' and it's not until you watch it all again that you say, 'Oh, he was talking about this thing or event here, or he was referring to THAT person' and it's not until then that the plot starts to make sense. These are very complex, very involving stories that you don't usually see in video games these days." This holds true for Killer7." - Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The correct usage is "select-start" because only losers play by themselves. :-P
- apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IIRC there were multiple mentions of him just being a kid. I mean hell, most of the characters were designed to only be three feet tall [cartoon style] anyways.
- Ayavaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's funny that you mentioned it. I thought that would definitely be there when I read the title.
Moonwalker's absence is conspicuous. - Leadhyena, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I played that game, and it was on PC as well. Man, the time you crawl onto the screen with the rat, I swear I must have jumped 12 feet, and I'm not freaked out by that sort of thing. It was just so photorealistic and _big_.
- skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tales of Symphonia's plot was completely bonkers:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_Symphonia/Detailed_Plot_Outline
Still a fantastic game though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Personally, "Phantasmagoria 2" was the weirdest plotline of any game I've ever played. Absolutely bizarre.
- lauridsd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think there has been a rather glaring omission here, probably because it was a PC game: Myst.
I mean, yes, it was revolutionary, it was visually beautiful, the puzzles were crazy difficult which made it a great game...but magic transporting books? Lost worlds? Schizophrenic evil brothers? Sometimes the puzzles themselves didn't make much sense. There was simply no way I would have been able to finish that game without a walkthrough. (I am thinking specifically of the otherwise infinite maze where you had to select which way to go based on sound.) - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I don't think that Grim Fandango was really underappreciated, it sold reasonably well, it just wasn't a blockbuster. It certainly had critical acclaim.
I am continually confused at LAs refusal to even consider bringing back even one of these games with the (rather self fulfilling prediction) that there is no market for these games. Well, duh, there is no market because NONE ARE BEING DEVELOPED!
It just be that great writing and gameplay isn't going to sell anymore, and that the eye candy, et al needed for a modern game costs more than a point and click is likely to make. - mrsharpoblunto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In fact the storyline of grim fandango was influenced by classic films noir such as casablanca, double indemnity and the big sleep. Many of the events in Grim Fandago actually parallel those in Casablanca, namely:
the 8th underworld corresponds to Casablanca iself, a limbo type location where people wait to be sent to a happier place.
Double N tickets in Grim Fandango correspond the sought after exit visas which refugees in casablanca could use to escape to America.
Manny Calavera corresponds to Rick Blaine in Casablanca, they dress similarly, have simliar mannerisms and both (at one point) own clubs where the roulette tables are fixed.
Many of the other characters in Grim fandango also share likenesses with characters in Casablanca, namely Meche and Ilsa Lund; Police chief Bogan and Capt. Renault; Hector Lemans and Signor Ferrari; Chowchilla Charlie and Ugati
Many locations also share similarities, particularly in Grim Fandango's city of Rubacava which includes two clubs: Calavera Cafe and the Blue Casket which correspond very closely to Casablanca's Ricks Cafe American and The Blue Crow.
Other similarities are numerous, However it shows that Grim Fandango's story isn't a WTF?! on par with "Bad dudes vs Dragon Ninja", rather its a carefully constructed masterpiece that acknowledges great cinema of the past. -
