- Sk8SkaNJ, on 06/02/2008, -17/+146Singleplayer > multiplayer
- Dumbledorito, on 06/02/2008, -0/+83The #1 thing I hear when I ask people why they don't MMO or play XBox Live or whatever is that "other players are idiots."
- Aensland, on 06/02/2008, -1/+82Screw that, when I'm playing a good multicharacter RPG I don't want some backseat driver bitching at me to go the other way. Singleplayer rules.
- YouRookies, on 06/02/2008, -1/+79MGS4, GTA4, God of War, Ninja Gaiden and Mario Galaxy. All perfect examples of why there should always be SP.
- rjc5056, on 06/02/2008, -3/+68Background Music or Silence > 13-yr olds screaming the N-word to be "cool" or "shocking"
- cyraxible, on 06/02/2008, -0/+39Don't forget Bioshock
- meruru, on 06/02/2008, -0/+36For most games you have that backwards (the exception being games like Team Fortress). Games should be made with story and/or level progression in mind first. Once that has been established then multiplayer should be added where appropriate
- themarq, on 06/02/2008, -1/+30Multiplayer simply requires more of a commitment of time to play. As an older player (and a Dad) I have less and less time to play in the evenings. It takes too long to hook up with a group of people to play with and then get rolling and then just as the team work starts to get rolling my son cries and I have to leave... there is no pause button in multiplayer.
I love TeamFortress 2 and play it 3 or 4 nights a week, but when I have only got an hour to play I'd rather fire up a singleplayer game (BioShock for example) and play on my own terms. - estvir, on 06/02/2008, -1/+28Yeah, because now most gamers are stupid consumer whores with a short attention span who want to go "Ooo, petty graphics!" and than go use racial slurs with a incredibly limited vocabulary towards someone they've never met before.
- BobMysterioso, on 06/02/2008, -0/+26I play games for an escape from idiots and the real world. Never will I listen to some stupid kid spouting insults in my free time. I prefer single player
- inactive, on 06/02/2008, -0/+24Agreed, most of the time. Every time I hear some jerkbag 10 year old telling me to go ***** myself on COD I want to jump through the tubes and ***** slap that kid.
- ButchersBoy, on 06/02/2008, -1/+24I still haven't fired up the multiplayer of GTA IV, and to be honest, once I'm done with the SP, I'll more than likely be back on CoD4 for MP.
- Diablo84, on 06/02/2008, -0/+17That's exactly what I done.
I used to play games purely to kick back and relax. Since purchasing a 360 I've been drawn in by multiplayer gaming, and while I've had a lot of fun with it, it's anything but relaxing.
I think I now like having the option: single player to casually pass the time, and provide a satisfying level of entertainment in a stress free environment, OR multiplayer, for a more exciting experience but with that potential for stress. Which ever one I play depends entirely on what sort of mood I'm in at the time.
The bottom line is it's always nice to have the option of single player for those times when you don't feel like playing with other people. - Kenzan, on 06/02/2008, -1/+17Why do i still like single player games?
Because I don't like to have to read;

-every two seconds. - FXPooky, on 06/02/2008, -3/+19I hate multiplayer, because the only motivator, and the whole point, is competition. I'm not a fan of it, I much prefer going through a story. Also, most people on Xbox Live rather annoy me.
- estvir, on 06/02/2008, -0/+14And Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey and others.
- houndeyex, on 06/02/2008, -4/+18It's the opposite for me. I'd rather frag in CoD4 for a few minutes rather than struggle to try to uncover some story line.
- Iggins, on 06/02/2008, -1/+13As much as i hate people online, some can be quite amusing. Like the previously mention 13-year-old who recently learned a new, dirty word. Or people randomly quoting the bible (my fav. and i plan to do it next time im online...) or this one guy in GTA who just kept going and going and going with physical threats, it was actually funny "Im gonna pull your eyeballs out and jam your thumbs into your bleeding eyesockets while i light you fire, and stomp on your mouth and cut your little toe off kicking you in the balls, then i'll rip them off too..." and it went on... good stuff...
At the same time.... i honestly worry about our children's future. I mean i know some nasty things to say, but i'll admit i can be told off by an 11-year-old nowadays... - highwebl, on 06/02/2008, -5/+17If you want to be social, play baseball.
- bradleyland, on 06/02/2008, -0/+10I guess it all depends on the game you're playing and the people you game with. The game I play on XBL the most is Rainbow Six: Vegas and Vegas 2. There are a group of 5-7 people on there that I now would consider friends. They're all 25+ (I'm 31) and have regular lives just like me. When we game together, we have a blast.
- evilcaptain, on 06/02/2008, -1/+10Depends on the game.
Multiplayer sudoku? no thanks :) - TheUngod, on 06/02/2008, -2/+11Elder Scrolls and Fallout FTW!
- MaynardJK, on 06/02/2008, -2/+11Phil Harrison has really proven himself to be a damned idiot over the past few years. I don't know why people keep listening to him. It sounds like Atari is headed for another collapse.
- naughtyboy, on 06/02/2008, -0/+9I enjoy both worlds. Single player games often hold a strong story line with lots of cut scenes, letting the player decide direction and pace.. Multiplayer games offer competitive fast pace action. I think the variation is good, and my guess is that both sp and mp will flourish, at least, that is my hope.
- krets, on 06/02/2008, -0/+8I prefer multi player to single player in that arena.
- norman619, on 06/02/2008, -0/+8The single player game is pretty much an interactive movie today. Games like HL2 are great examples of this. Well at least the first FULL game of HL2. I want my single player games to have well thought out and well written plots as well as good character development much like what people expect from great films. Good voice acting also helps. I play games usually to get away from dealing with irritating people in the real world. Single player will always have the potential to offer you a richer immersive experience than playing online with a bunch of kids and social misfits who seem more interested in talking trash than actually playing the game and cooperating.
- jstohler, on 06/02/2008, -2/+10It all depends on the circumstances. If it's late at night and I have a few minutes to play, I want my single-player HL2. If it's the weekend and I don't have anything else going on, I want my multiplayer Rock Band.
- sleepwalkers, on 06/02/2008, -3/+11You sound shockingly close to those jerkbags telling you to go ***** yourself.
- norman619, on 06/02/2008, -0/+7Ah yes yet another person that fails to understand that much like politics, multiplayer does not go well with everything.
- cadmiumpaint, on 06/02/2008, -1/+8Single Player is where games and characters are made. You can't have a story arch in a multiplayer.
Multiplayer is just a gladiator arena, where people get off on fragging each other. It gets boring after a while. - minoss, on 06/02/2008, -1/+8I don't understand why this is even a question. Right now most of my nights consist of doing 3-4 missions of SP in GTA4 followed by some TF2 or COD4 MP on PC. Once GTA4 is done that will change to Lost Odyssey or Mass Effect.
- mckinnej, on 06/02/2008, -0/+7You've nailed it. So far the comments have focused on the experience of SP vs. MP. What it really boils down to is $$$. Who really wants to pay $50 for a game and then have to pay $10/month to play it? Not me. I'm perpetual cash flow for enough corporations already. I don't need to be adding game companies to that list. Plus I can play SP on my schedule. I don't need to worry about any commitment or teammates. For someone like me, no SP == no gaming. I suspect I'm not alone.
- rblancarte, on 06/02/2008, -1/+8Yea but to be fair
Anal Probe > 13-yr olds screaming the N-word to be "cool" or "shocking" - KnightMareInc, on 06/02/2008, -0/+7theres more money to be made in MPer games. How many people are willing to pay a monthly fee for single player games?
- inactive, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6Heres an idea.... Story Mode / "Single Player" aspect of the game, Co-Op with Multiplayer support...
why the hell do i have to think of these things... imagine how badass a game like COD4 with multiplayer storymode would be.. even if it's 5 players max, that would still be amazing... - lennybird, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6Half-Life!... And the FIRST Halo...
- LiquidShield, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6Well yeah. Personally I play CoD4 alot, and I also play other online games. Those people are right. I frankly get tired of Joe Butch the alter ego of Little Willy Will the 12 year old computer nerd that sits on his fat ass all day long playing video games injecting chocolate Twinkies into his fatness, and bitching because some one decided to use the noob tube in CoD4 or some lowbie pissed of a 6 man mob and wiped the whole group. The balls get a little bigger when the microphone is on, and the internet is between players. That's why at least 50% of the people that I play online with who don't just flat out piss me off because they are 12 year old jack asses that think they know everything, and think you should to is on mute or ignore.
That's why I bought a PS3 and PSP I don't play multiplayer games on them. The Wii on the other hand I play the hell out of Mario cart, and Super Smash Brothers, because there is no communication between players.
More power to the single players! ! ! ! ! ! ! - inactive, on 06/02/2008, -4/+10LAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
- skywake, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6NEWS FLASH!!! Phil Harrison doesn't work for Sony anymore
- Jwoey, on 06/02/2008, -0/+6Multiplayer sudoku would be badass and you know it.
The object is to finish your puzzle and screw there's up at the same time! Put a 5 where it doesn't belong! See how long it takes him to notice! Oh the possibilities! - ThePwnyExpress, on 06/02/2008, -0/+5i don't understand what's up for debate here... a single player campaign or "story mode" is always a good thing, and the multiplayer is a way to keep you playing the same game for a longer period of time... because it's ALSO fun...
seriously, how many times can you play and beat the same SP over and over by yourself?... the MP is the same maps with different people every time - Burrito, on 06/02/2008, -0/+5TF2 Dads unite!
- reaper527, on 06/02/2008, -0/+5there will always be a single player market. it really depends on the game. try telling a story with a multiplayer game that is anywhere as good as halo, ninja gaiden, KOTOR, or one of the many j-rpg's. that being said, online games are still tons of fun, and they won't be going away any time soon either
- lazlonger, on 06/02/2008, -0/+5It's the same as TV. We had a fascination with reality TV in recent years and have been drowned in the crap, and as a result, dramatic, fiction based narrative shows, especially sci-fi stuff, is bigger than ever in response. The gaming companies are all twisted up about online nonsense, but many of us play to GET AWAY from people, not to interact with them. I watch TV to divorce myself from reality, and I play games to be alone with, and within, my own decisions, uninfluenced by other players with motivations I neither understand nor care about.
But "INDICATORS OF PERMANENT CHANGE" don't be discouraged. There will always be lots of non-conclusive data on which to make grand assumptions, so you will always have bits to waste by the billions.... - CarnivalOfDust, on 06/02/2008, -0/+5They need to build an electroshocker into every Live headset. If 10 independent (never-played-together-before) people hit the zap feature on someone who's being a dick, it sends a few hundred volts through their skull.
That'll learn 'em. 'Real-time active community moderation' - you heard it here first. - MaynardJK, on 06/02/2008, -0/+5Sands of Time was one of the best games on any system last generation. Some people actually look forward to something other than the latest FPS.
- ProjectGSX, on 06/02/2008, -0/+4My thoughts exactly. Im near the end of Mass Effect right now. This sort of gaming experience is amazing. Comparing it to the only FPS based online RPG Ive ever played - Hellgate London - Mass Effect is so much better its hard to even start a comparison.
- christopher79, on 06/02/2008, -1/+4If you think about it, Most of us "older" gamers grew up on the single player experience or 2 player experience...
so its in our nature to lean towards a single player game...
on the other hand games can be argued as the evolution a movies, the single player game being the movie we all play and participate in rather than zone out...
i always fear sounding old when i slam "social gaming" but my dislike for it always comes back to having to play death match with children instead of my peers...with all the screaming and voice masking...UGH
ill take single player over multi player any day - norman619, on 06/02/2008, -0/+3GTA is a great example of a game that is crazy fun to play by yourself. It irritates the ***** out of me when I am playing online with a bunch of people and the game turns into a chat session. I play video games to play the game not socialize. I rarely touch the multiplayer option in most of the games that were designed as single player games. When I feel like multiplayer I play games like UT, COD, and so on which were actually designed for multiplayer as the primary or sole purpose of the game.
- darkfus, on 06/02/2008, -0/+3Expect this market to thrive always, due to the number of morons online.
