- NielsGamer, on 10/12/2007, -10/+55Meet the man who still thought you could move it from vertical to horizontal with the disc spinning inside the 4th time!
- p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37Sounds like the makings for a zippy PS3 commercial - to be aired at the PS3 launch in 2009. :)
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -11/+41Go shake around your PC when its on and theres a dvd in it and tell me how it turns out.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -10/+343rd's the charm... oh wait...
- rlutterb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Heh... the comments that suggest user error are being buried, so I guess this one will be too. Ever hear of Occam's Razor? The most likely explanation probably is the correct one.
There was a guy on one of the threads last week that was complaining about getting 8 (thats EIGHT) in a row that were all broken..."How bad does MS suck... LOL!" It turned out to be a problem with his television. - AcidPhysx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Wonder if he's plugging it in the same outlet every time. Could be a problem with the power from the wall.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Yeah 4 definitely means user error. I've seen the problems with the 360 and they seem to be only amplified by the echo chamber that is the internet.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26You don't have to shake the console to break it.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Haha. "Introducing the PlayStation 3 - Guaranteed not to ***** up 4 times in a row, or your money back*!"

:D? - spikes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Spinning optical disks at about 12000rpm have plenty of momentum and will most likely come off the drive spindle and shatter. (I've had it happen before from moving a drive around while in operation)
- spikes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Tell me where to find a front loading optical disk drive for a desktop computer that has a ball post latching spindle mechanism that securely holds the disk. Your point is moot as most tray loading drives use a magnetic latch to hold the disk in place.
When I say ball post latching spindle, think the first playstation, laptops, and portable cd players. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23sounds like my experience with the motorola RAZR. POS!
- skatopher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I've had five... and i've got the documentation to prove it, my best friend had three... they send you back other refurbs.
- WVUChrisF, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Wow... thats either bad luck or bad workmanship.
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17The guy must have a black cloud over his head, just like Scott the engineer.
- Dave, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Someone should let this guy know that throwing it down the stairs is not the proper way to remove the system from the Styrofoam.
- SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -17/+26Digg this comment if you have a PS2 that no longer reads discs.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"yeah, might be moldy electricity... o.O or old and stale... O.O"
You laugh now, but just wait until you find out the ground is miswired on the socket you just plugged a $400 piece of hardware into. - Airscape, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Sucks for the dude, but never had a problem with my 360 or even my launch xbox. Any more than 3 and I have to assume there is some user error involved.
- quamb, on 10/12/2007, -15/+22UMH.... why are people getting thumbs down for speaking against the 360???
If you buy a gaming console, and move it when its on, it should not break. Simple as that. Consoles should never be like PC's, they should be fun, easy to use, portable and solid. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Reminds me of iPods. (Not that I have anything against Apple)
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -22/+29This is a poor excuse... If laptops can be moved when their discs are spinning without ill effects, then there is no reason why a xbox 360 shouldn't be able to be moved from one position to another without damage.
- spikes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Bottom line, desktop PC based optical disk drives are not designed to be moved around during operation. So far, I believe only Microsoft has used such drives in gaming consoles. I would assume the 360 uses a far more modern and faster drive then the older XBOX, as slower drives would not suffer the same issues when being subjected to motion.
- jasonprussell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12For the last time, the disc tray is not a drink holder!
- charmedguy18, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Same. 2. One is still in the process of being repaired/replaced. Let's hope the 3rd one's the charm...
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10This kinda reminds me of the PS2 launch..
I got a PS2 on launch day, after 2 days it died, totally dead wouldnt even turn on. I called EB where I pre-ordered and notified them of my issue in hopes they had a replacement. 6 weeks later I got a new PS2. That PS2 died after a month, the drive wouldnt read disks. Took me another few weeks to get a replacement, this time from Sony.
The PS2 I got from Sony worked for 7 months or so and then started scratching disks whether verticle or horizontal, had t replace it myself, meaning I had to pay for a new one. That PS2 lasted a couple years but I recently had to buy the latest revision of PS2 because it stopped reading disks. Overall the PS2 hasnt been very friendly to me.
Now I also had a bad Xbox 360. The problem was a video issue and MS replaced my console within 5 days and that was over Christmas weekend. I had called that Wednesday, shipped my 360 on Thursday and received my new 360 Tuesday. Overall I was happy with the speed of the replacement and my current 360 has no issues. - ThomasCS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, I think he only lost three. I'm not sure but here's what I've found:
DEATH 1: 'The machine worked fine until Jan. 21, when he saw three blinking red lights when he tried to turn on the console.'
DEATH 2: 'The Xbox Live online game service was disabled.'
DEATH 3: 'Szarek's third machine lasted 61 days, until April 23. As he was about to play ``Rumble Roses XX,'' the machine flashed the red lights again. Szarek said he had been well trained by now on troubleshooting and did everything he was supposed to do. The machine worked about one in every five tries. He disconnected the cables and the hard drive, then reconnected them.'
DEATH 4: This death doesn't appear to actually be in any of the articles. I think it's actually a (pretty fundamental) factual error on the part of the dugg article, but I stand to be corrected.
He did in fact receive four xboxes, plus a new power supply with the fourth. But I don't think the fourth one actually died. - jfox00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I bet this guy is getting pretty pissed. Every time, he has to unpack the XBox, set it up on top of his 500 Watt Sub woofer below the leaky pipe, and hook it up. In related news, the Sub woofer's return streak has stopped at 10.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well whatever this absolute ***** for brains is doing to his consoles is obviously ***** them all up. Any more than 3 faulty units in a row just screams out USER MISTREATMENT!
For all we know hes replacing the thermal pad with his own paste, flipping the box from vertical to horizontal every 10 minutes, placing the power brick on top of the unit itself, running his heaters on full whenever hes playing the games, inserting jelly smeared disks into the console etc etc etc.
If the 360s were this bad, why isn't everyone else who has ever bought one had exactly the same problems with them?! Perhaps because they treat them with a little respect and aren't frigging stupid with them!
This guy is a god damn retard, probably a sony plant by the sounds of it too. - Exedus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah thats right. Since yours works that means everybodys does right? Might want to re-think your logic there.
- anthony1124, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11keep the console and power supply off the carpet.
- hacz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Honestly, I'm not that suprised. I've had 2 broken xbox 360's so far.
- fyngyrz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3asusanator: All my kids are married and out of the house. They're all self-sufficient. I'm 50. Giving them all the same gift involves even-handedness and gives us all a way to extend our family even though we are not located near each other, using the Live service. If you have a problem with that, you'll just have to deal with it. I really don't care.
- fyngyrz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I haven't had failures any in a row... exactly. But I've not had a good experience, either. My friend Evan bought one; his died in the first 24 hours. They replaced it, the replacement worked and continues to work (some months now.) He's the only other local person I know with one.
I've bought four -- one for me, and one for each of my three sons, Mike, Brian and Justin. Mine's worked since day one. Mike's works too. Brian's failed the second day. They replaced it, and the replacement worked, BUT was the wrong country code and refused to play anything. So they replaced that one as well, and the 2nd replacement has continued to work. Justin's broke the first day, they replaced it, it continues to work.
So of five units purchased in our little group, and four replacement units total shipped back and forth, 2 of the original five worked and all of the replacements worked (excepting the country code issue.)
MS was very good, and quick, about replacement. But it is a little worrisome to see that many failures.
I bought the extended warranties. Normally I wouldn't, trusting to the odds, but in this case... it seemed like the right thing to do. - kday, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7My xbox 360 was left on with the media cupboard closed. About 6-8 hours later, I opened the cupboard, and it felt like a stove in there. When I initially touched the XBOX 360, I nearly burned myself!
I tried to boot it back up, and it wasn't coming back on. I didn't expect it to function after feeling the heat it produced. I took the XBOX outside of the cupboard, put a couple icepacks on it for about 20-30 minutes, put it back in the cupboard, and luckily it still works fine.
Now I wouldn't say this is Microsoft's fault, but user error. The XBOX 360 is a powerful machine, and it isn't meant to be trapped inside a tight cupboard. However, I believe the machine should have automatically turned off the prevent damage. The original XBOX even did this (someone correct me if I am wrong).
This is the only problem I have ever had. Even though the XBOX 360 has it's flaws, I still believe it is an all around good console. XBOX Live Arcade games are extremely fun, and the XBOX Live implementation is great. I love being able to download demos/HD music videos straight to the box. Just give your XBOX 360 room to breathe, and you shouldn't have a problem with it. - hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had 5 or more faulty xbox 360s. They even tried a new power supply. Eventually we got pissed and an above xbox Microsoft employee sent me a brand new xbox. It works like a charm.
- Cytranic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7My XBOX just started freezing on Friday. Since I had company in town, I didnt really think of calling xbox until today when I got home from work. I called XBOX and waited 15 min to get someone on hold. The lady ansered was very nice. She said my xbox was not registered, so I could register it over the phone. When it came time for the purchase date question, I really didnt think it mattered, so I said "It was sometime in Dec, so lets just say Dec 1st". She types in the information and says "I'm sorry sir, your warrenty expired yesterday". Of course I laughed because apparently she thought it was April 1st, not May first. Well this wasnt the case. She told my I was basiclly SOL, and then went into a hardocre sales pitch for the "Extendend" warrenty.
So make a longer story shorter, I yelled at the lady, got the manager (just another level 1 support) and he was able to call the higer ups to get it replaced under warrenty. It also happends to be a busy day at Microsoft, because there computer were so slow, the guy asked me if he could call me back. LOL But the extendend warrenty servers were just fine, because he could bring up that screen. I told the guy to call me back, and when he did I would think about the warrenty. But not until he called me back.sigh - antron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6He must be really bad at modding
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -5/+8I wonder if all those guys bashing Apple fanboys (not that I am one) come running to this thread to bring up the usual points of "that's what you get for being an early adopter".
Of course not, they're just lurking for the next Apple story to air so they can repeat themselves.
This guy's just got either bad luck, or he's hiding something. It's not like everyone who owns a 360 is returning them 4 times. I don't think MS is necessarily doing anything wrong, they are replacing them at their own cost after all. - Airscape, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Mine has been fine sitting either way, its when people get bored and swap positions while it is in use that is causing some problems. I keep hearing people say bla bla bla portable device can do it. 1. the 360 isn't a laptop or a cd player and 2. Why the hell do you need to change the position of the device while your playing it?
- SuperFarStucker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of the people posting here seem to be spreading FUD. I mean 5 xbox360 replacements is ridiculous, multiple DOA units, come on, can't expect anybody to believe that, even the worst QC is better than that. There is no incentive for microsoft to send you bad units, it cost them $$$ and obviously doesn't look good to prospective buyers.
I know several people with a 360 and none of them have had problems. - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I lost on the pass line at craps 14 times in a row. That's how statistics work, it's called variance. Thought it sucks, but at least in his case there was no extended monetary loss.
- iceperson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i finally gave up trying after my 3rd. what was really funny is the stack of them that were next to the counter when i took the last one back. the clerk told me that all of them had been returned that day by different people. when the person from the "game" department came to check the box he told me that they were getting returned almost as fast as they were selling. he said something like "we were better off when we couldn't get them in stock, now we spend twice as much time dealing with returns as we do selling them."
- arkmannj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My 360 started chewing up games, when I called MS support they basically called me a liar and said they [MS] have done definitive testing that proves disks can only get ruined by 2 ways. 1) moving the console with a game in it. 2) speakers rumbling the console
when I assured the representative neither of these were the case. (I don't have big enough speakers to be rumbling much...mys stomach can make a louder rumble) and I had already read all the bad stories about moving the console, so I was sure to pick a good spot with LOTS of ventilation and where it could sit horizontally. well the rep said he would go check on something and put my on hold for what he claimed would just be a minute. 45 minutes later I was still on the phone (cell) 60 minutes later I had the console 1/2 packed. 90 minutes later, still on hold and at Walmart getting my money back. 120minutes later and I finally hung up. but now I'm still out 120.00 on chewed up games I can't even sell on eBay. this was my first console since the SNES. guess I'll just be back to computer games... - whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure I'm going to get an ear full for this statement, but uh... if 4 of them have broken on you, maybe its YOU. or perhaps you're just the victim of a statistical anomaly. in that case, I thank you for receiving the broken 360 that might otherwise have ended up being the one I got. mine's been working great!
- dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2is it just me, or does this problem look like its on his side? perhaps he should by a power surge protector, or maybe some common sense.
- Xibby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Four malfunctioning Xboxes! Ah ah ah"
*lightning strike, thunderclap.* - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That guy might want to check the voltages on his outlets. The article doesn't say what's failing in the XBOXs, but if it's happening again and again, there's a good chance it's got something to do with his setup. Maybe try a surge protector or a UPS or something of the sort to protect his purchase.
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 Well, I am on my 3rd ps2. Thank God for my warranty
- mrangrygrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah that really sucks. I had 3 bad machines. Each one of them had a different problem. #1 would freeze. #2 wouldn't power up until you turned it off and on 3 times and half the time would give 1 red light. #3 was dead on arrival w/ 3 red lights. #4 has worked without any problems... So far.
