- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Its ok because then entire genre will be concluded with Duke Nukem Forever.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11not an FPS, you git.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10well, once you get past doom the genre is pretty well fleshed out, and there's no huge leaps of logic between say quake and what we have today. it's still items, puzzles, baddies, weapons.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10What a moronic, empty comment. What, not a fan of games that require reflexes, quick movement, a sense of spatial orientation, auditory response, strategy, and skill? Or perhaps you just prefer hunting for jewels or eating pellets or racking up points to actual storyline and immersion. Or is it that you need the time to think and respond when your turn comes? Either way, just because an FPS isn't the kind of game you like or are good at, doesn't mean the whole genre is pointless.
- modiggs1976, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That first screen shot reminded me of Strong Bad
"Your head a-splode!" - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8had they continued until today, the list would have been about 50 times longer, since FPSs exploded after Doom.
- wpc105, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7According to Bungie's website, Marathon came out in 1994, a year after Doom (according to the 1993 Doom release date on the article linked to above.)
- Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"mods" were quite popular for Doom (even Wolfenstein) and Quake came out more than 2 years before Half-Life did. So either you guys are too young to really know/remember or you're just fanboys.

- blackhorus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I should think that it would be better if he concluded with Duke nukem :-)
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Or they could exclude halo since it added nothing to the genre.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what about Elite for the C64?
- jonathan4465, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What about "Dungeon Master" for the Atari PC? I think that came out in the late 80's and it was graphically superior to Wolfenstein which came out years later.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good to see Ultima Underworld in there, that game was so ahead of its time.
- Gnome1300, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, a valid point, but it was tile-based and not full 3d....
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@drunkjack, You should argue that with FPS Doug..... "BOOMHEADSHOT!!!!"
- matman730, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If Star Wars should be included, then Microsoft Flight Simulator should also be included. But then it would be the history of flight sims, not FPS's.
- LustHog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had marathon, but only because I had a mac, and the selection of games was few and far between. Personally, I liked doom much better. Better atmosphere, bloodier, chainsaws.. you know, the important stuff.
- Thors1982, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OMG!!!
Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
One of the greatest games EVER!!!! omg... i wish i could play it now :-( i played that game for years and years - Thargok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dark forces made mouse look an everyday thing. Despite the fact that it wasn't default and was only inverted, it was beautiful.
Marathon was the first game to de-standardize physics and leave that to the level, it was a defining moment in multiplayer as it is the basis for a variety of different multiplayer scenarios. - lansuggs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Apparently history ended with Doom
- csbu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone play Robocop 3 for the Amiga?
That had fps gameplay and that was released in 92 - robdazomba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, Marathon did not come out before Doom. However, it was in production concurrent with Doom so it wasn't inspired by Doom or a copy of it. In a lot of ways, the guys at Bungie deserve as much credit as the guys at id, but id beat them to it. It did have an impact though. Bungie's 3D shooter had several important differences from Doom that have become standard video game features nowadays: 1) Marathon's engine could have rooms stacked on top of each other (Doom's engine could not do that); 2) Marathon had an intricate and fascinating sci-fi story line interwoven into the action--something almost completely unheard of back then; 3) Non-player characters could (and did) fight alongside your character. Doom was great but Marathon was actually a few steps ahead of it.
- newtrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uhmmm yeaaaaaah, I'm not sure I remember ANY part of Contra being a FPS. Contra was all from a third-person perspective. So maybe it was a TPS. But definitely not an FPS.
- Beerduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It should be mentioned that the only game on that list with a true 3D-engine is Ultima Underworld. And it was actually released a couple of months before Wolfenstein 3D.
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Your an idiot, have you even played a first person shooter before?
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought both games were great, different styles though. Marathon was more about the story and the levels, Doom was about the atmosphere and the graphics.
- nyyg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome story, but it would have been a lot better if they continued to present day. It's just interesting to compare as you go along.
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dark Forces was an interesting FPS, had cut very good looking cut scenes, and had some primitive 3D models placed in the game I believe, although rumor has it was built off of doom by reverse engineer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Watch this then...
Inserts drunkjack into Doom...
idkfa (All Guns)
press 7 (BFG 9000)
ctrl ctrl ctrl (Shoot) - Recoiler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's a nice list, but it could have gone on so much further. Marathon, Dark Forces, Quake, and so on. It should have been called a list of FPS games that continued until the games actually look something like modern FPSs.
- Cimlite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How is 3-Demon a first person shooter? It's a 3D Pac Man clone, no shooting involved.
- edtruckell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well i would add Captive by Tony Crowther on the Amiga as far as the tile based RPG part goes (not necessarily as ground breaking, but captivating) and also Asylum (as mentioned) on the TRS-80. Theres a lot of bits missed here if its supposed to be a history.
Im not sure robocop3 counts as i believe it was 3d vector without textures. might be wrong... - Darthypoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or just had Marathon on there at all. :(
- rebotfc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At last someone remembers Ultima Underworld, that game deserves much more credit than it gets.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No mention of Phantom Slayer? It should be there instead of 3-Demon.
Released in 1982, for the TRS-80 Color Computer, this game had many elements of an FPS: you walk through corridors of a 3d maze, and shoot humanoid characters. After Maze-Wars, it was really the first of its kind.
It made a good use of its primitive sound engine, as you could hear foot steps of enemies getting closer. When you turned a corner and came face to face with one of them, you had to quickly shoot them or they would get you, and some loud scary noise blasting through your tv speakers, essentially meaning that you were dead.
Even with its primitive graphics and sounds, that game could be genuinely scary.
Try that: close all the lights, turn up the volume, and play Phantom Slayer... Prepare yourself to be scared!
There's an online Java-based TRS-80 Color Computer emulator right there:
http://members.cox.net/javacoco/
Click on Setup, then on the BIN Tab, and click on the Phantom S... button. Have fun!
(Press spacebar to start the game) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yah seriously guys wake up.
Boulder Dash: maps, sprites, game code mods
Wolfenstien had new maps, sprite hacks, sound hacks and some minor code hacks.
Doom: Same as above + bit better code hacks
quake: game source (not engine) made available, this trully bought the scene alive.
halflife 1 = accumalation of quake1 mods + polish - quux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've always considered Dungeons of Daggorath on the TRS-80 a pretty early front runner for an FPS. Though from the looks of the screen shots others were doing the same thing at the same time. So somebody was copying somebody...
- jmaynardg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How many people remember Med Systems' Deathmaze 5000, Labyrinth, and Asylum for the TRS-80 model 1/3/4? We're talking 3d maze games in 1979.... And then there was Sub Logic's Flight Simulator for the TRS-80 and Apple II, which was curiously bought by Microsoft in the early eighties and then ported to DOS for Microsoft's Flight Simulator.
Doom was a late arriver to the party. - Bushlied, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone one up for some 007 Goldeneye? As much as I can appreciate the old classics, I gotta say that the FPS these days are outstanding.

Adult dvds, sextoys Viagra Pills, Girls, what more do you need!! - HunteRRosE, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0But who remembers "Shadowcaster"?...I loved that game. That and Ultima Underworld were the frontier of FPS gaming until Doom came out and killed everything.
- Nurjle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about Mercenary for the C64?
Anyone else remember the essential 15939 supply? - ashefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dunno... there have been some major changes to the genre since then. All kinds of variants and advancements in multiplay and mainstream use of player-made mods to name a few.
Are these changes as drastic as the ones listed in the article? Its debatable. Whether they are or not does not even matter, though. They are still a huge part of the FPS history. We didn't magically go from Doom to Gears of War overnight. There were a lot of major changes to the genre in that time frame. - chaotic6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1GOW is a third person shooter. Surprised they did not include Quake III or Unreal Tournament. Not a bad list. They could of included Far Cry, Prey, FEAR, or COD3 for more recent FPS's. Man I used to love playing Aliens on my C64, and yes I'm old enough to remember that. Even old enough to remember playing Battlezone in the arcade. Fun game.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1awww 3-Demon, loooved that game on my old XT.
- Bluejaye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They missed Starglider by Rainbird, for the Amiga and Atari ST, and of course MidiMaze for the ST.
