- kolop1, on 11/02/2009, -5/+37Playing an FPS on a touch screen? No Thanks.
- jackpot, on 11/01/2009, -2/+23Wolfenstein 3D for the iPhone got an update too:
http://digg.com/playable_web_games/Wolfenstein_3D_ ... - sickswaystop, on 11/01/2009, -9/+28It's worth nothing here that Doom has been on the Android market for a while now and is free. its cool that the iphone gets it now too, it just sucks you have to pay.
- kylescousin, on 11/01/2009, -4/+21Who would have thought this 15 years ago when you needed a 4MB memory upgrade ($200!!) to run this sucka. The beast just didn't run smoothly on 4MB of Ram.
- gluon, on 11/02/2009, -0/+16God forbid a programmer be compensated for their work.
- Perk, on 11/01/2009, -3/+17I've never particularly minded giving John Carmack more money - you always get value for it, and he always uses it for really cool crap:
http://www.armadilloaerospace.com - inactive, on 11/01/2009, -3/+12There's a time and a place for everything.
- dirtyword, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8i definitely wouldn't say that keyboard and mouse controls were passé when Doom came out... they were futuristic if anything.
- raydeen, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8Ah yes, hours of toiling in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT just to squeeze out a few dozen kilobytes of memory. My proudest moment was getting 614K free so that I could run the CD version of TES:Arena without any 'Memory List Blown' messages.
- kinerry, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8My nintendo ds plays it all out
- strictnein, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7Ok. Post your number so I can let you know.
- dirtyword, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7The time and place for Doom is on everything, ASAP
- Propethic, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7try memmaker or EMM386
- heasby, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7What about the IRQ and DMA settings? Is the iPhone Soundblaster Pro or Soundblaster 16?
- android8675, on 11/02/2009, -2/+9Dude, it's DOOM! A game whose source code has been FREE for years and is now on my toaster! Why the hell would I want to buy this game now? Ahhh!
Actually I played a demo of it and the controls are SOLID... for doom. Remember, doom came out when mouse/keyboard was kinda passe. Also you probably still can't look up and down in doom sooooooo.... touch controls with some accelerometer functionality would probably work. - magamiako, on 11/02/2009, -3/+10Except you aren't getting it for free, as you aren't getting the version that Carmack had oversight on. I'd rather have something from the man who created the game than from some moron who wanted to get it running on the platform just to say he could.
- inactive, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7Goldeneye?
- phyx726, on 11/02/2009, -10/+16only thing worse than playing an FPS on a console
- snafflepaffle, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5From the comments:
I don't think Android was running much of anything years ago. - Perk, on 11/01/2009, -1/+6The controls are quite solid for a mobile platform, and frankly the 2.5d nature of Doom lends itself well to the format. Multiplayer over wifi just rocks. A co-worker and I played co-op for a couple of hours last night when we were supposed to be working - really brings back the early 90s nostalgia
- wo0dy, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Maybe if the Price was like $3.
- ShiftyBizniss, on 11/02/2009, -3/+8get over it, man.. FPS on consoles has been decent for a while now...
- magamiako, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5SB16 was the *****.
Don't forget your Hayes compatible modem! - magamiako, on 11/02/2009, -1/+6It did if you booted clean and disabled TSRs from loading by using SHIFT on the bootup process. And if that didn't continue to work you could always use memmaker :P
Time to dig out amouse.com and my dialup and let's get the ball rolling over some IPX/SPX modem play. Mouse on COM1/IRQ4, modem to COM2/IRQ3 and let's roll :P - marciot, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Does this mean you can use a pinching gesture with your fingers to get a head shot?
- NSResponder, on 11/02/2009, -6/+10" it just sucks you have to pay."
Must suck to be on such a tight budget that six bucks bothers you so much.
-jcr - MWeather, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5That's neat, but I'm not going to pay for an open source game.
- raydeen, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5Does IDDQD still work or does the first 'I' have to be an 'i'?
- knobbysideup, on 11/02/2009, -3/+7My sandisk sansa plays doom. Not an impressive benchmark these days. Sorry.
- directrix13, on 11/02/2009, -2/+6Good, because the game engine code was the only open sourced part. The WAD files still have the exact same copyrights as they did before. You gonna pay now? You gonna be satisfied with the first shareware chapter?
- Propethic, on 11/02/2009, -2/+5I think his point was that playing DOOM on a mobile device is not an achievement. It has been ported to just about every device known to man.
- MWeather, on 11/02/2009, -1/+4I'll just download the open source WAD files people have created. They've even redone the original levels.
I've even got a few of my own sitting around, like my evil dead mod.
Why would someone pay for levels for a 15 year old game when there are plenty available for free?
Can this version even load custom WAD files, or is it crippled? - pklall, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3So have I. But you have to admit that the controls suck and it instantly drains the battery.
- insanekoz, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3And it's called college.
- danwallace, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3I love playing FPS on a PC, but people like you make me embarrassed to admit it.
- mcphilip, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3I can either confirm or deny that.
wait, is it too early to quote lines from Community? - Propethic, on 11/02/2009, -5/+8Must suck to think that paying money for what everyone else gets for free is a good way to spend money
- geodebug, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3LOL: "I squish your head!"
- MrChunks, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2Did the article claim that Doom in the iPhone is an achievement? I've just read the article. No, it doesn't claim it to be an achievement. It's just saying "it's officially out".
- Charlotte_Web, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2Pffft, I'm already running STARCRAFT 3 on my iPhone!
- phatfiend, on 11/02/2009, -4/+6my gameboy advance plays doom.
- jtechs, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2enhance.. ip 455.994.521.339
- Propethic, on 11/02/2009, -1/+3"to show it can be done" is *****, anything with a cpu and memory can pretty much play this game, not even sure if it needs hardware acceleration past the CPU
- rabidbob, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Quarterdeck - QEMM. Sheer excellence.
- android8675, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2Actually, after I stopped to read the article and found out Carmak actually did the controls I might have to reconsider, but $7 is a bit steep (wow, who'd ever think we'd say that when referring to hand held gaming?). Maybe it'll go on sale at some point.
- TheCollective00, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2that may be true, but playing Wolfenstein 3d on the iphone was seriously way more fun than I thought it would be.
- danwallace, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Hold on. I'll create a GUI interface using visual basic. See if I can track an IP address.
- CptCancer, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I want your toaster.
- antdude, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I remember co-op on dial-up.
Can this DOOM do mods, external maps (PWAD), dehacked, etc.? - Gravey9, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Actually yes...well almost
