- CollapseControl, on 01/26/2008, -21/+115Well the Xbox 360 is a great gaming console, especially if you have friends that connect to Xbox LIVE. The 360 is the only console my friends and I ever owned that we literally turn on every day, even if we aren't going to play a game.

Turn a Profit
5 points - inactive, on 01/26/2008, -39/+106"In the last six years, there's been one constant when discussing Microsoft's foray into the strange and seductive world of video game console manufacturing: they had yet to turn a profit on any of it."
This is Microsoft third time posting a profit in that division... not that it makes it that much better, but come on, do a little research before you post it to your crappy blog. If you were even slightly paying attention lately, you'd know that Microsoft posted a profit in that division a whole 3 months ago. - feikuai, on 01/26/2008, -21/+59"you'd know that Microsoft posted a profit in that division a whole 3 months ago."
Yes they did, but this article refers to the Microsoft earnings sheet for the latest 6 month period, which is the length of time used to judge the division's profitability. For no fiscal half year since the XBox's creation has the division been profitable...until now. - Christbait, on 01/26/2008, -7/+37You must learn that being a fanboy and lashing out on anything positive about the competitor only means you're insecure about your own system. Just get over it.
- KingGoonie, on 01/26/2008, -16/+39Zam.... again... 360 is selling more systems, and more games, month in month out. Meaning it is increasing its lead over PS3 every month. Meaning if 360 is collapsing, then PS3 is collapsing even quicker.
Tool. - tidu, on 01/26/2008, -2/+21I'm fine paying what, $5 a month for pretty damn good uptime (save for the december debacle, i've been on live for years and it's always been phenomenal)...
- joshrice, on 01/26/2008, -3/+20Maybe Blizzard should stop charging for WoW since they're making so much money and have so many subscribers...it'll be a cold day in Northrend when that happens.
- SimianSamurai, on 01/26/2008, -5/+21winner
- toshipaine, on 01/26/2008, -5/+20All the money they make from their other ventures balances out any losses. Microsoft is still building their video game empire and they will continue to spend money to do so. Their long term goal is to bridge the gap between owning your computer and your living room (see MSNBC and BET). More: http://www.netaction.org/msoft/world/table.html
- BlueSkyfish, on 01/26/2008, -2/+16It's a Friday night, so it looks like all of digg's famous trolls are out tonight. (zamfir, mywhitenoise, whereami, truespector, kinggoonie)
- crakbot, on 01/26/2008, -2/+16Dude, it's under $50 for a whole year.
- inactive, on 01/26/2008, -2/+16What do yo mean by "not that it makes it that much better?" Are you under the impression that Microsoft EXPECTED to make a profit quicker? Because they didn't. This was always a long term thing. 6 years is NOTHING in terms of investments for a company the size of Microsoft. If it continues to increase in profitability, the investment will pay for itself in less than 10 years and the next generation will be all gravy. Good business.
- xtc46, on 01/26/2008, -0/+13stupid company wanting to make money off of the product they sell...
- fani, on 01/26/2008, -3/+16I would rather pay $50 / year and get a great service than get something crappy for free a la PSN. Xbox Live is paid, professional quality work and is worth every penny. Every other comparative pales in comparison
- inactive, on 01/26/2008, -9/+22This profit is just for 2 quarters. The Xbox still needs to recover the 6 billion plus Microsoft has lost since the first Xbox.
From Gamepro.com
"Microsoft has lost unthinkable amounts of money on its Xbox business. In the six short years it's been in the industry, the company hasn't made a dime. When adding the recently announced $1.9 billion losses incurred in fiscal 2007, total life-to-date Xbox losses are conservatively estimated at somewhere around $6 billion dollars." - inactive, on 01/26/2008, -5/+17That is a TINY price to pay to have a place in the console arena. How much would it cost to buy the PS business ? That is kinda how you have to look at this.
- vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -8/+20Hopefully the price of XBOX live will go down now, or better yet, it will be free.
- JMDupont, on 01/26/2008, -0/+111.9 Billion was last year. The speculation at the time was that they took the write-off then so they could show a profit later instead of having that 1.9 suck off any profits over time.
- bigbadgoat, on 01/26/2008, -1/+12microsoft's gaming division is still in debt billions of dollars overall since they started developing the original xbox almost a decade ago.
- scotticus, on 01/26/2008, -1/+11You enjoy watching dudes ejaculate?
- gfunk84, on 01/26/2008, -3/+13"Well the PS3 is a great gaming console, especially if you have friends that connect to Xbox LIVE. The PS3 is the only console my friends and I ever owned that we literally turn on every day, even if we aren't going to play a game."
What good does Xbox LIVE do you with a PS3? - RoanokeRich, on 01/26/2008, -5/+14They got about $600 from me this Christmas. I'm no fan boy, but with the recently added ability to play AVI's I watch movies on mine daily. I took my external HD (300 gb) off my computer and hooked it up to the xbox. Now I have a entertainment system with about 250 movies at a buttons touch.
- estvir, on 01/26/2008, -3/+12Uh-oh, good thing NeoTEKK used a y instead of an i!
- DarkDx, on 01/26/2008, -2/+10If more people buy Xbox 360 more developers will develop for it thus making money from licensing. (And online services, downloads, etc.)
Ignore BlueSkyfish's *****. - inactive, on 01/26/2008, -1/+9Look at all the ventures hat Google takes huge losses in. (as in EVERYTHING but search and ad sense.) It is called in investment. Virtually no company is going to get huge success without going airly deeply into debt at first.
- EtherGnat, on 01/26/2008, -2/+9NPD is just US sales.
- inactive, on 01/26/2008, -0/+7Short term pain, long term gain.
- xtc46, on 01/26/2008, -0/+7you want them to add more infastructure, add more features to live, and then not charge anything for it. What dream world are you in?
- Christbait, on 01/26/2008, -4/+10I agree with that last sentence, it's weird how people accidentally use their gaming machines for other obscure purposes, I sometimes just switch it on to communicate and arrange something with friends over a quick game before switching it off again and heading off, and adding Messenger makes it much quicker and more fun to talk to friends over XBL while ripping it up on COD4, instead of waiting a few minutes to warm my trash can of a computer.
- inactive, on 01/26/2008, -3/+8which is factored in to the profit statement
- smallwang, on 01/26/2008, -7/+12MS has had plenty on misteps (RROD and recent xbox love outages), but theyve worked for my dollar, putting out great games and trying to fix problems theyve had. I havent enjoyed using my PS3 and Wii 1/2 as much as my 360.
- JackondaRocks, on 01/26/2008, -7/+12Only 5-6 billion brain cells to go before you actually made any sense.
- TheLD, on 01/26/2008, -2/+7Every single article about the Xbox always gets flooded with RROD/XBL downtime comments. Sad really.
- Dantetheinferno, on 01/26/2008, -1/+6Amazing. I didn't know microsoft could make it so that no console could work if Xbox LIVE were down.
Pretty impressive, single player requiring online. :P - KingGoonie, on 01/26/2008, -11/+16Uhhuh... and yet still every month 360 sells more worldwide.
So if every month 360 sells even 1 unit more, it will increase its overall lead by 1 unit...
And every month its selling much more then 1 unit more. - xtc46, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4the same reason people invest i stocks and bonds. A busines sis about long term gain, they have products like office and windows that create significant constant cashflow, so they invest in their smaller groups like gaming. Considering the average small business takes 2-3 years to be "profitable" 5 years for a huge thing like xbox is pretty good, and the pay off will be huge.
- DarkPrince11, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4One month of sporadic downtime doesn't exactly ruin their perfect track record.
- BlueSkyfish, on 01/26/2008, -9/+13"Xbox's mission statement is to preserve the Windows monopoly and extend it into the living room, as a media extender for a Media Center PC, along with a host of other MS and other company's hardware devices that fit into a digital entertainment lifestyle. MS has the bucks to keep losing money on Xbox for a long time, maybe forever. They've already lost around 6 billion dollars. How are they ever going to make that back on Xbox? They can't. Maybe they don't think they have to. That amount might be just 1 or 2 quarters of profit for an integrated hw/sw portfolio, with windows, PC Hardware, Xbox, Zune, TV, Movies, ads, etc., all providing some revenue stream to MS. You should check out their jobs site sometime. You can learn a lot about what they are doing. And their patent applications. They have a team working on making PCs now. That voice activated thing they did for Ford? Where do you think you will see that next? MS devices and sw is my guess."
http://www.8bitjoystick.com/archives/jake_inside_s ... - TonyCubed, on 01/26/2008, -2/+6I know a lot of people don't like Microsoft or the Xbox360, but Sony fanboys have to thank Microsoft, why do you say? Because, if Microsoft didn't push the Xbox360's hardware, Sony might of not decided to use a Nvidia chip and just use the Cell Processor. Microsoft made the PS3 better than what it was going to be, at least, in the Graphics department.
- TedTschopp, on 01/26/2008, -1/+5I think I read somewhere where Microsoft Execs said they were looking at breaking even after year 10. So they are well ahead of schedule, if I remeber things correctly.
- crakbot, on 01/26/2008, -7/+11The 360 combined with the awesome games, and very inexpensive LIVE service is a great product. Kudos to Microsoft.
- boombye, on 01/26/2008, -2/+6Got my ***** repaired twice, I'm not gonna whine and bitch about it like a little baby, and not to mention I can be a spoiled selfish and greedy brat even though I'm too old to be behaving like a little brat.. But the point is, that it is nothing to flip out over, I get my repairs for free and I have friends I can hang out with in those 2-4 weeks that I won't be able to play... Or I can actually try beating some games on Wii I haven't even touched yet or spent much time on... Hell, I can even play at one of my friend's homes a few blocks away.. I might not have ***** to come home to for that brief period of time, but I still have plenty of DVDs to watch at night and then I can go out the next day and hang out with my friends and play on their ***** if it's that bad.
- tehzombie, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Seriously people, it's MICRO$OFT for christ sakes. I mean, who cares that they've lost 6 billion dollars for their gaming division. I can see if they just relied on this section, but to Microsoft 6 billion is almost laughable.
Financial analyst: "Mr. Gates sir, you've lost 6 billion dollars in the gaming division!"
Bill Gates: "Well kick the cat off the stack of million dollar bills in the lobby and go buy yourself something nice".
Seriously, no big deal. - calibration, on 01/26/2008, -1/+4What about games?
- an0nym0us, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3I must have woke up from a coma; since when it's all hot and shiny up there?
- TheLD, on 01/26/2008, -2/+5Why would you buy a new one when you can get it fixed for free?
- reed311, on 01/26/2008, -3/+6You've got to spend money to make money. MS pockets are so deep they could make a profit in almost any field. But, the 360 is probably the most consistent console this generation so I have to give them props.
- DavidGX, on 01/26/2008, -2/+5Who says anyone's replacing their broken systems by BUYING new ones? Microsoft has a 3 year warranty for the Read Ring of Death problem, they replace it. And that problem is slowly disappearing through the introduction of newer designs (Xephyr, Falcon and soon Jasper),
- inactive, on 01/27/2008, -0/+3I have it all. Gamecube, Wii, PS1, 2, 3.. Xbox, xbox 360.. I find myself playing my xbox360 90% of the time. Glad to see them turn a profit.
