- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52The only thing different is the color, HDMI, and larger HDD. I'm fine with my premium system right now...I'm still waiting for when they manufacture the systems with smaller chips so it'll run cooler.
- Zoxy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36I agree, there really isn't a reason for someone who currently owns an 360 to shell out of the elite. None of the upgrades really add to the gaming. People will really only need the 120 gb of space if they do a lot multimedia downloads (movies, games, etc), 20 gb is plenty for demos and online stuff. So the people that are buying it now are people how did not have a 360 before or people just want it because its new.
- RetroRufio, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30I was the first in line at Best Buy to get one, and it froze 3 times yesterday :(
- Nedlog23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22What, the line or the 360?
- darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15As did the original Playstation and the SNES.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The PS2 went through several revisions.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21All of those games that are out already are definitely system sellers, but the point mcatrage is making is that the people who'd buy the system solely because of those games have already done so. As for the yet unreleased games, well that's just what he was saying. The Elite might sell well if it was released at the same time as them, but it isn't. It's released in the middle of a minor software draught (or a lack of top class titles anyway) and only the few people who were considering getting one just because want one.
I might consider it, as the Wii is my only current gen console at the moment, but the DVD drive is still as noisy as the old one, and the chip is still the bigger one that overheats. I'll pass this and wait for the truly superior version to come out in a few years. Heck, maybe I'll even have a HDTV by then. =P - Harbinger67, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16I bought one yesterday. I had to call 3 stores; the EB Games and Target on the campus here at Ohio State were both sold out early in the morning (mind you, the EB Games here has about 5 Wii's in the window and a few on a shelf inside). I finally dove a few miles to the Microcenter off the freeway and picked one up; they had about 20 in stock they said. It all has to do with where you look for em and where you live.
So far I love the system. This is my first 360; I was going to buy a premium a few weeks ago but decided to hold out for the HDMI and bigger HDD; I just got a 37" 1080p Westinghouse LCD HDTV, and I wanted the HDMI so I can get the most out of my screen. I think the Elite caters more to those who don't have a 360 already; those who do have one really don't need it unless you have a bunch of money to burn. - Hipple, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Less louder?
- fabiolover2002, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think everyone overestimates the demand for HDMI. I'm not talking about diggers, but the average-joes. First off I know plenty of people who don't have an HDTV but either have or want an Xbox 360. Second, of my friends that have 360's I would say at least half don't even use the component connection, instead preferring the composite connectors on the front of their 56" high def televisions.
- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12It'll be elite when the die shrinks and i can hear myself think.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Elite is a gimmick. It's actually good news that it doesn't sell well because it may make Microsoft realize that if they are to charge $70 more they have to add some actual updates to their console's hardware, like 65nm CPU for example lowering the excess of heat, better DVD drive which does not scratches the DVDs and more or less give a complete product, not -just- a "greater HD" thingy. Congrats to those NOT buying the Elite....
- matlock, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I have my 360 set up in a home office, not sitting 20 feet away in an entertainment center. It's considerably louder than my gaming PC when the DVD-Drive is in use. The PS3 and classic Xbox are whisper quiet in comparison in close quarters.
- knupso, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12That's nice.
- dynamojoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I upgraded from an original xbox to a 360 Elite. It's nice. I had been planning on getting a platinum, but when I heard the rumors of the Elite I decided to wait for it. The Elite may be a rip off to current owners of a 360, but for me it's a decent upgrade. OK, yeah, I'd rather wait for the 65nm chips, but if I always wait for the next big thing, I'll be stuck playing this old xbox forever.
- bigjosh359, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I got one basically because i wanted a second 360 and my Wii fad is done for now till new and better games come out.
It is black (which i dont care for now, seems too flat of a black to me), bigger HD, HDMI, and quieter (for me) when the Disc are spinning but I dont care cause I have the volume turned up on my TV.
The only difference that I have yet to see many people talk about is the power block. It seems lighter to me and they went from 3 prong to 2 prong.
It is not worth it unless it is your first 360 or needed HDMI (which I have notice a difference with HD DVDs and shadowing in games). This is what the 360 should have been from the start. - Nickbc87, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8The noise never really was that much of an issue for me, if my T.V.'s volume is a quarter of the way up, I can't even hear it. I'm only looking for the 120gb hard drive. Even with the smaller chips, I won't trade in my launch 360, especially since I haven't run into any overheating problems.
- ShivaOritiner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow calling stores on launch day and asking them if they have stock... that's definately a really accurate way to determine how well something will sell.
"Hey grocery store... do you have milk?"
"Yeah, like a hundred gallons."
"Damned, no one must want milk then!" - matlock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I would seriously have considered selling my old 360 to upgrade but the reviews still mention the ultra-loud DVD-Drive. I've owned most game consoles sonce the NES and my 360 is louder than all of them combined.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@BobsYourUncle:
Not sure how that's an "asinine" question. Maybe you don't quite understand that word or something. I've often wondered the same thing. The only time I've ever heard my launch Xbox 360 is when the receiver and TV aren't on. - Bowski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Same chip as the original and I don't know about how loud it is. I've heard both ways, but more that say it's just as loud.
- CocoaPuffs23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3First of all, you are not getting "modded" down, you're getting dugg down, get it ***** right.
Second of all, you're wrong. - BobsYourUncle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The Elite has been rumoured for more than a month and a half. If the 'best' version was that important to you, you would have waited.
- YouRookies, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"don't get you buying one; what will?"
"Halo 3, Bioshock, Forza 2, Mass Effect"
....and a good fighting game. MS needs to buy these games: Tekken, Soul Calibur, or VF. If they made them with online play with a ladder, it would sell millions in Japan. - DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This just in: enforcerpsu is every single customer. Everywhere.
- Keyser_Soze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Using composite on a 56" high definition TV when component is available is a crime. Why would they do such a thing? Your friends should be rounded-up and flogged with a HDMI cable.
OH you to for letting them use composite. - krabat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I'm definitely excited because hopefully the price for the premium console will go down. The 360 Elite is just a ***** rip off as far as I'm concerned.
- Bowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just sent my premium in to Best Buy for repairs and looks like I'll be getting a $400 gift card instead of my old system back. I think it's worth the extra $80 in my situation. But that's just me.
- Jorriss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I got mine yesterday and was sixth in a line of ten people. I was initially concerned that I may not get one if this store only received five. It turns out that the store got a shipment of Wii's and everyone wanted one a Wii. I have had no problems with the Elite and it sounds exactly like the premium.
- SpItFiRe3297, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Who cares how loud it is? Half the time when I'm playing I don't even notice it..
- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, it's not as if Microsoft is expecting people who already own a 360 to go out and buy an Elite. It's intended as another option for people looking to buy a 360, presumably one that has a higher profit margin (or less of a loss margin, if that's still the case). I think the main target audience of this console is high school kids that have always wanted a 360, and figure that they might as well work a couple extra days at their summer job and get the newest one. Both existing versions have been readily available for months; I don't see why anyone would expect a unit that offers the exact same functionality, and as far as gaming goes, to sell any differently.
For many people, the Elite's release is only significant because it means a sudden influx of used 360s to eBay and other channels from those hardcore "I want the best" types, which should result in a price drop. - JagoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2/sigh
I was "maybe" contemplating on trading in my system but I guess I will wait then. If later on they update the system so that it is quieter, has HDMI _and_ with a larger HDD then I'll buy it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Actually I ended up selling my box to my best friend for 300. This lets me wait for the transfer kit and pull my data off. Other people who did bring their boxes in got the straight trade in credit of 250. They were offered another solution, take 225, keep the HD so you could recover your data, then bring it back for 25 store credit. I asked about 25 refund instead and they said "NOPE!".
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I would have gone and bought one in a second if the HDMI suported Dobly True HD or higher on HD-DVDs
- eatmygames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those with Elites, find out which drive you have:
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Xbox_360_Elite_DVD_Drive_Which_One_Do_You_Have
Also there is a visual comparison for those who are unsure what each drive looks like:
http://media.gameworldnetwork.com/news_shots/146759824745d28f2707ace.jpg - MikeD606, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5ya know, you probably could have sold your 360 for about $350 on ebay...
- JagoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok so someone answer this for me...Is the machine quieter?
I've seen people say that it's quieter and others say that it uses the same chip size as the original (aka it was never shrunk down like some were expecting.) - krabat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I will trade you a copy of Descent for your old 360.
- drwh0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm considering doing the same. Currently I still have the old Xbox and am looking to get a new system soon. I have been waiting to see how the console wars pan out but the 360 is still looking strong. If you compare the price of the premium to the elite the extra price is worth it for the new features if you don't own the console at all.
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@shoulderknight
ZIf those games were so enticing, you would have gotten a 360 when they came out, and not wait until now. - Kolenka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I wouldn't say the Elite is "zomg, quieter!", but that some of the early 360s had loud DVD drives when they spun up to full speed, and it does depend on the brand. I have seen loud and quiet DVD drives on laptops, desktops (at the same read speed, no less)... and consoles. My guess is that there is more than one supplier for the DVD drive in the Elite, much like the Premium and Core. You might get a noisy one, you might not.
- MrFatalistic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2anyone get the feeling that this is just a cash grab?
oh *****, no, please don't put the bag on me!
*runs from the xbox fanboi mafia* - inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3In a small 200 person Xbox gaming group I belong to we have 15 people who were buying one and 8 who were a maybe. Granted we all have a 360 (or two) at this point but our group could be considered hard core gamers. Slightly older with disposable income but still considered hardcore. Personally I'm waiting for the smaller chipset and a quieter DVD then I'll pick up a 2nd unit.
- superdupergc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ bobsyouruncle
yeah... rumored, not confirmed. i'm just sore because i cant just upgrade my 360 without taking a hit in the wallet (even if i sold it on ebay). ah well, crackdown has been fun :) - ddobson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I was hoping for built-in WiFi; don't really need the larger HD at this time although the HDMI interface is a plus. Holding off for now to see how the 360/PS3 situation develops.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"don't get you buying one; what will?"
Halo 3, Bioshock, Forza 2, Mass Effect
Mainly Halo 3. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6"I am all about choices (hear that Sony?)"
Uh... do you even know what the PS3 offers in terms of a console?
Considering they allow you to put Linux on it, I'd say they're giving the user tons of alternatives and viable options. Whatever benefits you get with Linux are now automatically applicable to the PS3.
1. You can rip HD-DVD movies with the Blu-Ray drive in Linux (and Blu-Ray disks themselves)
2. Emulators. Wii remote, bluetooth, and MAME is some pretty fun stuff.
3. Media center wise, you can put MythTV, Linux MCE, whatever on it or alternatively tie it into an existing Media Center (MS only allows WMV at the moment)
Plus it's a console. So while they don't exactly give you the choice of buying the HD player or not, for $100 more than the 360 it's not really a bad deal when you put it all together. - lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4mister flaut, unless you have actually done those things, dont bother saying it can be done. first, you cant play hd-dvd's. then, you cant rip blu ray discs due to encryption. then, linux programs must be specially compiled for the processor, so i cant simply run any old x86 program on the cell. nor can i get wine and run it. the same thing applies to the media center. and thats not even mentioning the inability to use hardware acceleration. as it is right now, linux does not have access to hardware, and so cannot play games or anything else with it. in fact, from most reports, even general usage is "laggy" from the inability to access hardware. video playback is said to be pretty bad, games are sure to be the same way, and so i see nothing useful about linux right now.
if you want games, get a console. if you want choice, get a pc. isn't that how it works? don't people always say how consoles should just work? well if your interested in other things enough to install Linux on your ps3, then you'd have been better off just getting a pc for all that. considering the pc actually can do all of those things effectively, where the ps3 cannot, i fail to see your point. - staffrocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why?
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@wageslaven: No you're the ignorant one. 65nm means less heat and less electricity brainiac. What people want is less sound output and lower electricity bills. That's what people want and would give more money for, not for "nerdy" 100gb more. You are the one without common sense...
