- ChrisRX, on 10/12/2007, -8/+185Over time console developers learn little tricks to squeeze as much power out of their hardware as possible (just look at graphics at xbox/ps2/gc launch compared to how they are now)
Nintendo is at an advantage here with the wii's hardware being similar to the gamecube's, all those little tricks still apply so they can still use them to create impressive graphics, but they also have the added power of the wii (faster processor etc.) to add on top of that
Sorry my explanation is far from perfect, if anyone doesn't understand I'll try to reword it - ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -24/+105looks way better than $600.
- orgasmatron, on 10/12/2007, -19/+74In other words... sonys *****
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -5/+53That's a very good point in regards to the experience involved in using the chip. I imagine as long as the development tools are similar it's a big head start for developers.
- SeVeRyourTies, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Why is he being dugg up? He said there are no textures.... If that were true, there would be a bunch of skinless models in the pics. Although that probably isn't how he meant to word his comment, that doesn't change the fact that it doesn't make a lick of sense.

The reason halo PC ran poorly was because it was a port, so it was KIND OF emulating an XBox on top of the PC, so you lose cpu cycles to the emulation, where as HL2 was running nativly.
@ChrisRX
I understand what you mean, does that mean after a few years the ps3 and xbox360 will continue to go forward, where as the wii can only be streched so far? - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31@Chris, I totally agree. IMO, anyone who thought the Wii's graphics would suck was clearly buying into the Sony / Microsoft PR stuff.
Look at Resident Evil 4 for GC. That game looks amazing. Now consider the fact that the Wii is like the GC but better. Yet people, for some reason, thought Wii would have worse graphics than games like Resident Evil 4... - jizzatch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27The GC graphics processor had some image processing functions that allowed it to perform multiple actions to each polygon, such as bump mapping, antialiasing, etc. So, even though its GPU looked outclassed compared to the PS2 and Xbox, it was actually able to hold its own in the fact that it did a lot of the graphical operations in hardware that the other systems had to do in code via the software.
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29Isn't the XBox 360 powered by DirectX? It seems the 360 has a MUCH more familiar API than anything Nintendo has.
- nyrol2, on 10/12/2007, -18/+38Actually the gamecube was more powerful than the PS2 in every way. It was just limited to small single layered dvds of which were read backwards. It's just like how the N64 was actually more powerful than the PS1. But because the PS1 could hold 10x the amount of information, the end result was better.
- peregrine, on 10/12/2007, -14/+34Eh its about gameplay. I'll go to my friends house to play the 360 for 15mins and then get bored.
- davidhildreth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20its a confirmed fact that the wii will support 16x9 displays at aspect
- davidhildreth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@donkeydrop
i see what you mean, but tons of screen shots are from dev units, where do you think the ps3 screens come from? - directedition, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20If you want realism, you need to stay far FAR away from console games.
- dnite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22The one good thing (and bad thing) about the Wii compared to the PS3/X360 is that the Wii doesn't support HD resolutions. This is good, because the smaller resolution will let the system make games that look great on cheap hardware, and on most TV's, this will look really good. The bad, of course, is that some people will notice that, on their huge HDTV, the games don't look quite as 'crisp' as those on the 360...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Precisely, that's what I've been saying all along, I don't care if your console can put out 10800825023985i, it's all about the game play and fun, not the graphics.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28"@nyrol2

utterly false. what makes you think modern pc's can emulate an XBOX when they cant even emulate early ps2 titles yet? It was really just a poorly coded, unoptomized engine, thanks to gearbox - lunarworks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21The N64 and PS1 both had their horrible flaws.
The PS1 had that problem with repeating textures on jagged angles, and the N64 looked like the screen was covered in Vaseline. - mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Then you should be playing with the 360 instead of bitching about screen-shots of a game for which we don't even have a release date. Or even better, gearing up for the PS3 which will supposedly be more "realer".
- kigabit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Texture resolution is the only thing that even slightly disappoints me about Wii graphics... although many developers have managed to minimise this using shaders and lighting effects. It's easy to tell, even from these screenshots that the Wii hardware is able to render more polys to the screen than any from last gen, which I'm glad about, since I don't usually try to walk up to the bad guys and count the threads on their shirts...
- IMustBeEmo, on 11/11/2007, -0/+14GameCube discs are not read backwards that's a myth.
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15And in conclusion, more than 3/4 of the market realizes that the difference is completely meaningless to them. For SD TV owners, they're paying >3x the money for a feature they won't use.
- cjmemay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@gimianame
You are being dugg down, not because what you are saying is unpopular, but because:
1)everyone knows that
2)it was said poorly
3)you put your own words in quotations
and for the record it isn't "wii blasphemy" to say gameplay is important, its practically the MOTTO of the Wii. Nintendo hasn't shut up about it for the past 2 years. - oGMo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"Over time console developers learn little tricks to squeeze as much power out of their hardware as possible (just look at graphics at xbox/ps2/gc launch compared to how they are now)"
This is true; however, these screenshots are likely from a Wii SDK, much like other images shown on IGN:
http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/550/550444/img_1875632.html
http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/550/550444/img_1769544.html
"OMG! The PS2 suddenly outputs high-def 720p video!" ...not exactly. On a real PS2, the game only renders more like this:
http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/550/550444/img_1812702.html
The Wii specs also top out at 480p output. This image is far higher resolution than the hardware is capable of, even if the final game looks similar, but at much lower resolution. Developers can tweak, but they can't change physics and hardware. Unfortunately IGN has a habit of posting these without labels. - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Psst, that was on your computer, this is a console...Lets not compare the two, eh?
- usp8riot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18innovation > eye candy
- robotexplorer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"(innovation + eyecandy) > innovation"
duh... - inactive, on 11/11/2007, -2/+11This nyrol guy really has no clue what he is talking about. Already modded down above, for some reason he's modded up this time even though he's just as (if not more) wrong. Reads the disc backwards? PLEASE. Open the cover while the disc is spinning. It goes the same direction as your CD player.
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9For games, I like good gameplay. For porn, I like good graphics.
- sakabako, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10He's not talking about this specific game being more fun on a Wii (which none of us can actually testify to), but that the games that come out for the GameCube and DS have had a stronger focus on gameplay rather than graphics.
I, for one, agree. - humanpowered, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The xbox could handle Doom 3 & Half-Life 2.
The Wii is more powerful than the Xbox.
Therefore the Wii will be able to handle some pretty smooth looking games.
Duh. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Plenty of images here:
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/splintercell4/screenindex.html - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9ok, ps3 will look WAY better on a HDTV than on an SDTV, but just look at madden on xbox compared to 360 on a SDTV, the 360 version looks WAY better.
the whole idea that the 360/PS3 only look better on HDTV is bogus, the higher-polygon count is evident on sdtv too, so are the stupid shiny textures (which early 360 games used to fake next gen-ity).
Not that I don't like the Wii (especially since graphics aren't it's thing) but these shots don't look to have that high of a polygon count and that will show on a sdtv with a much lower resolution than your monitor. - passivejj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Looking good! It's worth noting that the image resolution for the first few images are 1280x1024 which is a bit misleading for a Wii game. The textures look about right though. I can't wait for this game- I love the Splinter Cell series.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -14/+21Looks almost as good as the 360 version? In my opinion, no.
Wii:

Xbox 360/PS3:
http://i.i.com.com/cnet.g2/images/2006/207/reviews/926934_20060727_screen005.jpg - optimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think what peregrine is hinting at is that these pointless fanboy exchanges about polygons and textures is cockypop. If the developers produce something that is fun and perhaps original in design and gameplay, they certainly would win me over, even with 2nd-Gen graphics. This is one reason why portables like the Gameboy do so well, and why a console like the Sega Saturn does well overseas where there is a popular developing platform.
With any new console you are going to have the basic genres in your titles, but with the XBOX360, thus far (I have one) the games are lackluster in that they play no differently than the last generation. The new controller for Nintendo may be a bit gimmicky, but it brings a spark of original thinking along, and truly creative developers will make the best use of it.
XBOX360 supports HD through analog component (YBR), which if found on many HDTVs. - wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, that's definitely the calibur of Doom 3 / HL2, and for the price, that ain't bad at all, kids.
- Aquinas315, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The Xbox also ran on a modified Pentium 3 processor, (and i think the GPU was nvidia, but not sure) so the change over would not have been as drastic as moving from the PS2 and it's custom GPU
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The graphics look pretty crisp and clean to me(for a console) save for that one which was all grainy and greenish...Kidding, looks great way to go Nintendo
- ZephyrWest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This is ridiculous... The Nintendo fanboys out there are burying all the comments of the people who disagree. I'm looking forward to the Wii too but I'll be the last person to say that it can match the Xbox 360 in terms of graphics. Any gamer worth his salt knows the Xbox 360 can pump out more polygons than the Wii and Splinter Cell is not an exception to that rule. I think it's pretty obvious in a side by side comparison that the Xbox 360 has better graphics.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The GameCube dev API was, in fact, the easiest of all 3 consoles...
- peregrine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I wasn't saying that the 360 was inheretntly boring that was my fault I'm sorry. What I was trying to say is that till this point I haven't played a 360 game that has tickled my fancy so to say.
See I can say that the wii will be fun simply becuase Zelda has NEVER failed me :). - opnickc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7When playing a game, what's more noticable: High-res textures or realistic movements of the characters?
Animation>Textures>Polygons when it comes to making a game look "realistic".
Lighting is also a big factor, and the wii has proven capable in that area (see Red Steel - http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos/fdbf6760df939c7997553d909292c143.jpg ) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Don't dig bugmenot down for posting a point with something to acually back it up.
- scald, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You want realism prior to gameplay? Go watch a movie.
- pdiddle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10@ImTheDarkcyde
"utterly false. what makes you think modern pc's can emulate an XBOX when they cant even emulate early ps2 titles yet?"
That two totally different ends of a point your on. Firstly PS2 emulation is coming along really well, have a look at PCSX2, which can run a number of games with a very playable fps, like FFX. The next release has huge strides in improvements.
Secondly the people who make these emulators do not have open specifications and intimate knowledge of the consoles spec's, unlike M$, whose development team would have an easy transition for xbox->pc (since they virtually the same anyway). - thefalloftrey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The graphics are looking pretty good, but in the end, i'll be buying a wii for the gameplay, not graphics. I don't see how anybody would be willing to spend $600+ on a ps3 and not want a wii at all. Seriously, the xbox360 and ps3 are for the most part simpy more powerful versions of older consoles, they bring very little new ideas or ways to play.
Point in case, the wii will be better because of originality in gameplay, not graphics. (But the graphics are still looking great)
so basically i just ranted over what usp8riot said in one line... oh well - asarien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yo brother, no need to get on the Nintendo fanboys. They're well aware the Wii isn't as much raw processing power as Xbox 360. Nintey officially stated plenty times.
- masterspy7, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12I think the 360 version is definitely going to look better, and looks better now. I have nothing against a Wii, in fact I'm getting one. But graphics wise, from what we know so far, the 360 is a lot better. Seriously, look at Fisher's pants in the first pic, UGLY. Thouhg probably a texture issure, there is a huge differebce
- unclefrank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4dug down because youre comments are mindless drivel, has nothing to do with fanboyism.
