- theRIAA, on 10/12/2007, -4/+57someone should make a jack thompson skin and put it in a 1st person shooter... you know, so I can train for assassinating him in real life
*rolls eyes* - Junkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36If I wasn't killing people in games, I might be killing them for real. Win, win, as I see it.
- owenleej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Sometimes I pretend I am an astronaut... I never realized I AM an astronaut.
- AggieTales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Oh.....dear.....God..... Did they just compare games to 9/11?
- jmhyer51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25"The Video Game Documentary That Could Kill Our Industry."
Umm.. doubt it. - Oogler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19"We are what we pretend to be." WTF does that mean???? I don't know who is worse, Jack or the film maker he snowed into doing this for him. Gotta love the apocolyptic strings as though driving home some monumental doomsday scenario. What a *complete* and utter farce.
- jaredbloom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Oh you guys shall love this one... I'm Ok, starring Jack Thompson. Enjoy.
http://imokgame.com/ - Nateon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I like how the guy was relating Flight Simulator to 9/11. Seriously dude, you're just trying way too hard now. I play NHL2k7 just about everyday and I still can't play real hockey for crap.
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Wouldn't it be ironic if we were all made out of iron?
Oh crap, videogames-turned-comedies are rotting our brains! Better get Jack Thompson on that right away! - zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Because that would require Parents to actually take responsibility. Saddly a lot of "Parents" these days some how think that television, computers, and video games are replacements for actual upbringing. Then when things go to hell "Oh its not my fault, I only bought Timmy my 11 year old a copy of Grand Theft Auto despite the content warnings. It is all the video games fault."
- jmhyer51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Notice how they conveniently flash a Nazi flag. Complete sensationalist garbage.
- Jalo117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Moral Kombat?!?! If that's an attempt at a pun I'm not laughing.
- KrazyKoala, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Video game violence kidnapped my children...and ravaged my wife"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I play Madden and I'm getting good, but I still stink at actual football compared to my friends and especially so compared to pro players*
*exception being Rex Grossman - Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Those games look fun. I need to look up some of them and try them out...
But yeah, the saddest thing is that this crazy-prophet-screaming-armageddon-on-the-street-corner video gets idiotic parents' attention.
Oh... and... MORAL KOMBAT. Fruitality! - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Didn't you know that Hitler got all his ideas from playing Wolfenstein?
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If you want to kill games, you better kill movies and books at the same time.
Books are often a *lot* more vivid, since they don't have some ***** rating system governing what they can put in them and what retails have the balls to sell them. - gnawph2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I remember playing Doom and Quake when I was young and my father had a long chat with me about violence in video games. I believe proper parenting requires an open connection and relationship to provide context and guidance on "controversial" media rather than restricting it.
Little Jimmy or Susie is going to try drugs, sex, and perform fatalities on foolish worms who dare challenged them in the field of battle regardless of a parents attempts to wall up their child's world. It whether or not you tell him to wrap it before you tap it, take the seeds out first, or that its DWN, FWD + PUNCH rather than DNW, BCK + KICK that makes a difference. - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well of course they do. I play video games all the time and I'm not very fit, have pasty white skin and no girlfriend. I've still never thought about killing anyone tho.
- mickeyknoxxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hollywood: " Our violent movies have nothing to do with kids being violent."
Video Game Industry: Our violent games have nothing to do with kids acting out violence."
Rock/hip-hop- "Our violent songs have nothing to do with violence.
I think what people need to realize is that we are all violent to begin with. If you'll recall, millions of people for thousands of years were warmongering, rapist, violent hethens. It was certain powerfull entities over time that tried to conform us all by creating the illusion of us being civilized. Religion telling us to fear god. Governments telling us to fear laws. So because we can't parade around with a machine gun and kill everyone for fun, we like to live vicariously through violent music, movies and video games. Every now and again, you'll get a lunatic who will just go shoot at random people for nothing. (Ex: Lee Malvo) But that's because they decided to actually act out their own violent impulse that was already instilled in them. Not because moveis or video games made him do it. if anything, these games are probably responsible for saving more lives. Alot of people would probably be acting out violence more if they couldn't pretend to in a game.
why don't they shut down shooting ranges? - Pyroteq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"I mean something isn't right if a 5 year is playing GTA:3"
I've been playing FPS since I was 5. Wolfenstein 3D was one of the 1st games I ever played. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is loss of human life a good reason to "kill" any industry?
Why then is tobacco still going strong?
Relax folks. Video games are harmless, even helpful. But even if they weren't, as long as they make money they are here to stay. A mixed blessing, you could say. - seanhive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nothing will EVER kill the video game industry.
- sooperdooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That sounds like a challenge
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Then why the hell are you playing them, Bob?
- Sloloem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Good lord, how pompous. Frankly I didn't make it through the whole thing, once they blamed Microsoft Flight Simulator (Flight Sims in general) for terrorists flying jets into the twin towers in NYC, I had to go vomit for a while. It made me physically ill to see a national tragedy trivialized so much, just 'cause Jack, Lieberman et all don't want the amazing responsibility of keeping their own kids from playing GTA and want the US Gov't to step in and hold our hands.
- jmhyer51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You have just sided with Jack Thompson. Prepare to be buried straight to hell.
- jmhyer51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They did. They just did not get the conclusions they wanted.
- mickeyknoxxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Jack isn't trying to curb violence. He's trying to make money.
Truth.com would absolutely ***** if everybody quit smoking. They'd have know reason to exist and lose every penny their making.
The concept may have a great cause, but the motivation is the same as violent movies. Money. - Tbab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, Jack Thompson, the teenagers of the modern age are so stupid, so moronic, so clueless that they get their morals, political views, and life goals from video games...
...Not.
Seriously, this is insulting. Get a clue Jack. - jmhyer51, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Accidentaly put this in the wrong place digg down please.
- stvnly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yep, flight simulators are as dangerous as first person shooters
- DrakeTheRedEye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The title exaggerates the power of one video, but makes many good points about the angle of the documentary.
- drunkjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Lamed for hyperbolic ***** headline. EVERYBODY PANIC!
Sorry, wrong site.
FUD sucks. - DIAF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yea, relax tc.
- brokekneck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well, Germany already banned "violent video games". Alot of political figures(Hillary Cilton is one google here and GTA) have made parts of there campains based off restricting and censoring video games. There is a chance in the near and far future that video games will be detuned and "politically correct" in the near future. I mean something isn't right if a 5 year is playing GTA:3. But once you hit the age when you can tell the diffrence between right and wrong. There whats the big ***** deal? I've been playing FPS games since I was 10 or 11. Granted there were not is graphic as todays games. But I still can't look at a real dead body with out having my stomach turn.
- AClayeJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Parenting is what's wrong with today's youth. IMO
I'm sorry, but calling a time out doesn't work. - lostspyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Moral Kombat!!!!
dundunduh dun - Kratisto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Wouldn't it be awesome if Thompson got killed and someone wrote "Video games don't motivate violence, Jack Thompson motivates violence" next to him, preferably in his own blood?
- Cabal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3luckily, they have their own myspace page for the movie because they know that in order to be cool you have to have your own myspace page because otherwise you can't market your idiotic logic to twelve year olds who will believe anything
- Pix869, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Parenting, what's that?"
Jacky-boy is clueless. - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4CALM THE ***** DOWN.
Okay. Right.
I had this discussion with a few friends of mine (We're all gamers, after all), and they had this exact reaction - OMG WTF THIS IS *****!
The trailer is made to get the attention of epople - It does this by pissing you off (The gamers), or drawing you in to the drama and fear (Most other people), that's what it's there for. They want people to look at it. Now, before making up your mind about this, try looking at some of the people that are in it -
(Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_Kombat )
Steven Kent has wrote a fair few game reviews for a while, and he is one of the writers for this documentary.
Lorne Lanning - Created Oddworld
Gregory Fischbach - Founded Acclaim
Dean Takahashi - Writes a gaming blog, wrote Opening the XBox and the XBox 360 Uncloaked
American McGee - Alice, Scrapland, worked for iD...
Hal Halpin - Founded IEMA
Henry Jenkins - The Anti-Thompson
Doug Lowenstein - Founder of the ESA
Vince Broady - Founded GameSpot
Now, those are the only ones that I could quickly look up on Wikipedia, because I've not got a whole lot of time, but I think it's worth noting - These people are NOT insanly biased, thinking of the children, etc. This documentary does not seem to be flamebait, but rather a balanced look at things (From what it appears). Don't judge it by the trailer. - cvh™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3*****! Then Keith is a terrorist. Someone should arrest him and put him in a "carrot suit" in a high security cell.
And wasn't Alex getting a pilots license? He also plays violent games!
What will happen to diggnation?
uh... nothing, because no one gives a *****! - Pix869, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No one would be quick to deny it's not a factor in some cases, but these ***** are saying that if you go play mortal kombat you'll rape children.
They can't parent america.
To say video games are at fault is an oversimplification. - meepus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not to mention the fact that Jack Thompson is up for review by the Florida Bar. He might just get disbarred... and if he does, nobody's going to listen to his loud mouth anymore.
- AwRy108, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't even look at a violent scene in real life and not have my stomach turn; but I also wasn't playing games like GTA and surfing the Internet on places like Rotton.com when I was a child, either--the most violent thing in my life was GI Joe.
My point? Well, while I agree that it's up to parents to determine what their kids can and can not watch / play / view, the issue is so much more complicated than that. For instance, who's to stop your 6-year-old from play GTA on someone else's PSP after school? Or what about children who have dead-beat parents that don't know that they need to sensor what media their kids have access to? C'mon people, you've all seen enough Jerry Springer to know the types of people I'm referring to.
While I do feel that Jack Thompson is a douche, I will say this in his defense: it's ignorant of our society to assume that every parent is a good parent; and it's also ignorant of all of us to think that we can have 24 / 7 surveillance over our highly-impressionable youth. In other words, the next time there's another Columbine-like incident, be sure to remember: just because you're a good parent or your kid is mentally stable, doesn't mean everyone else is in the same boat. Hence the need to monitor the sale of excessively violent video games. - SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ok ok ok, SO he says that terrorists used Flight Simulator to train for 9/11.
I think I'll load up Sim City, load the recreation of New York, and I shall practice summoning tornadoes and earthquakes.
Then someday, I shall actually Summon a Tornado on New York.
Yes, Its full proof. - SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Video starts with a clip from Deus Ex.
You know, One of those games that requires thought. Ironic, out of all the games to brainwash us into violence. - Barnolde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2***** this nanny-state *****, stop trying to censor anything and everything that's fun. People are individuals, stop with the scapegoats and stereotypes.
