- bharless3329, on 07/08/2008, -6/+120You know what makes kids violent? Bad parenting.
- briguymich, on 07/08/2008, -0/+85"Blaming violent media would be like going to the opera, noticing that most people there are rich, and concluding that opera makes people rich"
I have never seen a more simple way of describing to the paranoid folks out there exactly what their arguments sound like to me. - Zarokima, on 07/08/2008, -0/+61It's just old people afraid of new technology. By 2020 there will probably be next to no stories about how video games are turning kids into crazed murderers, just like there are currently no stories about rock-n-roll or comic books corrupting kids. Actually, this will probably be the last time this ***** happens, since we've hit a huge technology boom where things just keep expanding and growing, so by the time the current generation gets to the "ZOMG THINK OF TEH CHILDRENS!" age there will be too few people afraid of adapting to new technology to make a big deal about it.
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -2/+34according to the chart as more gaming systems are available crime rate amongst youth will eventually drop to ZERO, so bring em on!
- fr3ddie, on 07/08/2008, -2/+29but your experiences are pretty much entirely governed by your parents for your first 18 years of life.
- dha07030, on 07/08/2008, -0/+26Even with an argument like this people still won't listen. I think we will just have to wait for them to die off. I 20 or 30 years video games will be very prevalent and acceptable, just my 2 cents.
- chaos7, on 07/08/2008, -3/+27it's not that simple.
you are your genes + every experience you've ever had in your life. - M724, on 07/08/2008, -0/+22There are two things that have gotten more integrated into our lives in the past decade or so: The Internet and videogames.
There is one group of people which attack them both, and make complete idiots of themselves: ignorant old people who either don't want the world to accept what they hate, don't understand what the hell this new tech is and/or are afraid something they are hiding would come out online.
In a couple of decades, there will be ZERO opposition for either.
I'll be waiting. - snagglefoof, on 07/08/2008, -0/+17Maybe it's because nobody knows what the thuth is.
- Sunnygurm, on 07/08/2008, -1/+17Maybe if people took accountability and responsibility of raising their kids instead of finding something to blame their behavior on, we'd live in a better world. Video games aren't the problem people!
- eViL2, on 07/08/2008, -4/+18No digg I posted this like 2 months ago. http://digg.com/gaming_news/The_thuth_about_violen ...
Sucks that I am not popular like msaleem. - MindStalker, on 07/08/2008, -1/+11Thats what the article says, the parent poster is simply joking, get real. Nobody seriously can claim that video games have reduced crime, what the article is claiming is crime has gone down in recent years and is also not a risk factor in crime according to the experts in the field.
- theaceoffire, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9"Those kids and their new fangled books! Some books have *pictures*!"
- unfinity, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9There will never be ZERO opposition. No matter what the subject, there will always be some crazies that disagree with things that are clearly known as fact.
http://tinyurl.com/9fd8 - fr3ddie, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9Grand Theft Auto is fun.... just like watching violent movies is entertaining... If youre going to accuse video games of making kids violent.... dont forget to mention MOVIES. ***** rambo was more violent than gta. and thats 30 years old... and what about Saving Private Ryan???... it made my grandpa have a seizure watching that.
- snagglefoof, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8"Updated: October 19, 2005"
It doesn't have an original date, but this is a pretty old article. Still an interesting read. - jccalhoun, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8It is probably because we can't handle the thuth!
- da_bradler, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8I wonder what it is we will hate in 20-30 years? I'm thinking robot breakdancing is going to be a serious threat to our children in 20 or 30 years regardless of statistics proving robot break dancing is nothing but awesome.
- Ablerank, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8Video games are already mainstream. Those people are the outcasts, not us. They're just fighting to keep their antiquated opinions prevalent without daring to notice how much the world has changed around them, and how unacceptable it actually is these days to be a close-minded old *****.
- TC10284, on 07/08/2008, -1/+8When will we get rid of the religious zealot people?
- ukrainial, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7There has always been new technology and hopefully always will be. When you get older you will probably display the same disdain for new ways of doing things. I'm only 20 and I'm already starting (what the hell do 12 year olds need cell phones for? Back in my day...)
- da_bradler, on 07/08/2008, -2/+9DUGG DUGG DUGG DUGG DUGG DUGG DUGG!
- bosssmiley, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7...and that they will denounce the author as a fist-jabbing, flag-burning Communist-Terrorist-Muslim-Athiest-European as soon as they are able.
- KowGawd, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7Dangit! I spent money on lottery tickets for years and all I really need to do is go to the opera!? I mean, it's on the internet, it must be true.
- Harbinger1080, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7maybe you're all just ass holes?
no offense. - dha07030, on 07/08/2008, -1/+7*In 20 or 30 years...
- ChinezePanda, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6Anyone here as a kid play Cowboys and Indians?
GI JOE (using actual fire crackers and ant hills?)
Anyone?
I sure as hell did.
Did I kill a bunch of yellow skinned people? Nope
Did I blow ***** up with a home made bomb? Nope
I rest MY case. - Cerebral, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6I want to believe you but honestly although we have a lot of technology coming out there is nothing that is entirely "new" or "innovative". So when it comes that time and we are the old people are you telling me that you will just be rip roaring ready to go with jumping into that teleportation device? I'm sure you'll be hesitant as well.
In all reality the truth is that it's the fact that the "old people" want to keep control over every aspect of our lives that is the problem. We are in the information age and the fact that now there is no "buffer" to keep actual news from reaching normal people scares the ***** out of them. - benologist, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6Every class room? One 360 or PS3 between 20 - 40 already ***** up teens isn't going to be a problem solver.
- bosssmiley, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6I didn't think much of that "America's Army" game either. ;-)
- Hetman, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5Let see things that the Conservative media says are causing children to become violent.
1) Video Games, comics, rock n roll, hip hop, T.V. Movies etc.
2) Atheism/evolution. "even though in reality the two are not even related."
3) The Big Gay Agenda. "Whatever that is, I was unaware you could catch they gay as they call it."
4) Marijuana "Which causes you to be less violent, unlike Alcohol.
Things that have no affect on kids according to Conservative media.
1) Parents.
2) Education.
3) Poverty Level. - combatgoose, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5I'm so sick of video games being blamed for things that aren't true.
It's just a scapegoat for parent who are too lazy to take care of their children and monitor what they are doing and what they are playing.
Kudos on the article. - TheSexyGeek, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5When I was in high school, our house was gaming central. On any given weekend, I'd have at least 5 friends over playing Street Fighter all day. My mom's friends would ask her if she's not concerned with the kids playing fighting games all the time. Her answer: "If they're here playing games, they're not out getting in trouble. I can keep an eye on them when they're here."
I think we turned out alright. - alankem, on 07/08/2008, -4/+9I sense that fox news is picking up on this article....
- norman619, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5Whenever I see something titled "The Truth About" I automatically assume it's going to be 100% crap. I was happily surprised to see this was not the case here. There has never been a credible linking between simulated violence and violent crimes but that never stopped the media and politicians from making the claim. If anything violent games provide an outlet for people. I know after a long stressful day at work I love to launch GTA and trash the city. Better I do that than kick the ***** out of my irritating co-workers.
- Skizzy311, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5The fact that you state yourself, friends and colleagues all suffer from "shorter temper, higher irritability, and an all around more violent attitude" is probably less to do with the violence in video games and more to do with the fast paced society in which we live. For example, I notice an increasing irritability in myself when the results or actions of things in life do not come as quickly as I expect them to due to the fact that we have the "instant gratification" syndrome that affects a large swath of the current population. We search for answers on the internet and are presented with immediate results. We perform actions in a video game and again see immediate results. Alternatively, we run a report at work and it takes 3 minutes to complete and immediately our temper begins to rise and we think "why is this taking so long!!!". Is this reaction due to video games or the constant onslaught of immediate and easy information/results/etc... that we have come to expect in today's society.
Not saying you are wrong, but never be to quick to place blame without viewing the full picture. Be judicial in your reviews/opinions, not prejudicial. - SolidBones, on 07/08/2008, -1/+5I think parents are responsible for at least a good chunk of both of those (though genes may be unintentional).
- da_bradler, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4The problem is by the time people stop hating video games we are going to be the people who start hating whatever is new in a couple decades. Here is hoping the current generation doesn't repeat the mistakes of every other generation preceding us :|
- CeeJayDK, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4Actually you hit the nail right on the head .. before videogames , comics were considering to be corrupting the youth.
- SolidBones, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4I wonder how many of these honking "video games are the devil" dolts actually have (young) children?
- luckyguy2000, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4individuals can stop the hate for new things but the majority will do it nevertheless. even this generation. its human :(
imagine yourself as a 60 year old being angry about the kiddies who misuse their parents holodeck to consume virtual reality porn and lifelike gta clones.
i think well go like "zomg, thats too much. the kids are going insane! we need LAAAWWWWS!" - Cerebral, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4While I would agree with you, I think that Saving Private Ryan was glorifying violence considering that there was not much truthful about it save for the war. Now watching a show on the History Channel about WWII or the Military Network would be "displaying it" for purposes of education. Making a movie just to make money... glorifying it.
- keyforce, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4You mean sort of like he was doing right here, if you would have even bothered to read the description?
- Cerebral, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4Yea... they've moved on to burning CDs. First it was "Heavy Metal" followed by "Gangsta Rap" then the "Dixie Chicks" and now they are after video game media like GTA and Bully(probably on DVD media but the people that are doing it probably don't know the difference). When will it stop!?!?!? Can't anyone think of the childrens?!?!?!?!
- ChinezePanda, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3The whole ***** thing is ***** up. Once these old men and old hags die and get the hell off of capital hill.. and our generation takes the senate, congress, the courts, and the whitehouse... you wont see any kind of change.
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3You don't care about actual research and facts?
- Ablerank, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Listen, a sick ***** is a sick ***** - plain and simple. If they have the predisposition to gain enjoyment by causing harm to others, a game that allows them to commit crimes in the virtual world may even curtail them from performing such acts in the real world.
Can a video game encourage a normal human being to go out an become violent? No. I have played video games for at LEAST 22 of my 36 years, and I've loved the violent ones going way back to NARC, but I am not about to go out on a crime spree. - robweber, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4Of course in any study or statistic you are relying on validity of the information given/recorded by the person(s) doing the study. Did you know 80% of all stats can be made to say whatever you want, 50% of the time?
More realistically, do you really think that police precincts are really just 'not reporting' all the video game violence crimes happening on a daily basis. Could there be like 10 Columbine type crimes a week and I just never hear about them? I'm willing to bet if you were to dig a little deeper into the 'evidence' you are presenting with the policy study you'd find that the kinds of crimes that are getting dropped are petty thefts, or the occasional picking up a kid for smoking pot - I doubt they are neglecting the report all the jail breaks, and bank robberies going on. - Cerebral, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Sadly that game is pretty amazing but I have to say that it is more of a "simulation" in the fact that you cannot just be a sniper if you want; you have to complete the "sniper" training etc.
Otherwise it's just Counter-Strike in disguise as a military recruiting tool... Wait.... Strike that; reverse it. - Stavrosian, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4Fox is too busy furtively masturbating to alien side-boob.
