1. The Dark Eye (1995)
2. Haunted House (1981)
3. The Path (2009)
4. Illbleed (2001)
5. The Lurking Horror (1987)
6. Sweet Home (1989)
7. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (1995) - UhNathUhMuh, on 10/26/2009, -7/+694 pages... for 7 games... are you serious?
- jeddyftb, on 10/28/2009, -1/+24Eternal Darkness for gamecube had me genuinely freaked out a few times.
- sylv3r, on 10/28/2009, -0/+20You must be new to GamesRadar.
- blitz718, on 10/28/2009, -7/+274 pages, kiss my ass
- YouandWhoseArmy, on 10/28/2009, -1/+11I'm dissapointed Clive Barkers undying didn't make that list. Not only was it scary, it is probably the best FPS (single player, sorry Half-Life) I've ever played. I don't know why more game makers don't adopt the metroidvania style level design. Even though it's from 2001 the graphics and story are good enough that it's worth playing to this day!
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/clive ... - miggie, on 10/27/2009, -0/+9I want to play the path
- Dervish108, on 10/28/2009, -1/+8Gabriel Knight
- Ryanissosuper, on 10/28/2009, -0/+7You do realize it's a list of horror games that weren't popular, right? I don't Fear falls into that.
- android8675, on 10/28/2009, -1/+7Because everyone's heard of Undying or Clive Barker... so yeah.
- chuckDontSurf, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6Hey, I played Haunted House when I was a kid! Guess I'm old.
- daviz0, on 10/27/2009, -1/+7damn presumptuous article, I have played one of these and that was illbleed on the dreamcast and it was pretty good
- KMartSheriff, on 10/28/2009, -1/+7After reading your comment I immediately closed the tab containing the article. 4 pages? ***** that. ***** your advertising.
- Fazaman, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6I find myself depressed by the fact that the only one I may have played is the oldest one on the list. Now get off my lawn!
- Twinnie, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6Whenever I see one of these 'scariest games' lists I always think of Undying. I remember heading out to the island before you take on Lizbeth and being chased around a tomb by a howler that I kept hearing but could never see. I was ***** ***** myself.
- hoju7887, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6everyone's heard of FEAR 2
- haharleyquinn, on 10/27/2009, -0/+6Pretty solid list. Only heard of a couple and I've only played one.
The Lurking Horror is creepy. Anything remotely related to Lovecraft is enjoyable, though. Download it. - jonglebeats, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6The "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" short story is pretty good.
- Hood15, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5Ran out of room on the page? New web standard, pages can only be so long.. browsers can't scroll more than a few hundred pixels.
- Twinnie, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5I remember "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream", it was from those days when you got a demo CD on a magazine and installed every god damned one just because they were so hard to get hold of in those days. I played it and thought that it was the most depressing game I'd ever seen and I'd never wanted to own a game less.
And "The Path", I've had that sitting on my Steam demos list for a while because it keeps getting mentioned in the indie games circuit but I've never got round to playing it. I sorta lost my faith in that production team after playing their other game, "The Graveyard". - Philbert, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5Having that on the list would make it a ***** list. It could be the scariest game ever made, this is a list of games most people haven't played.
- AaronMT, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5Hugo's House of Horrors
- SilentSpyder, on 10/27/2009, -1/+5but how will they make money? ;)
- android8675, on 10/28/2009, -1/+5I personally found Infocom games terrifying at times, but that's probably because I have a fairly active imagination. I remember in the early days I just didn't get Zork (one of the first text games I ever played), but when I revisited the game years later (when I got into books in high school), I got totally hooked.
Not everyone is into it, and I understand that, but to say the game or games suck because you don't get scared by it is... well an opinion.
I personally used to LOVE playing haunted house with the lights low and the tv blarring. I think someone made a homebrew version of the game recently. I might have to look that up now. - cfuse, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4I enjoyed the Penumbra series of games - there are a few scares in those. Bonus points for few weapons in the first, and no weapons at all in the second and third - you realise how habituated you are to shooters when you have no guns to play with.
- Ryanissosuper, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4Don't lie.. you don't have many friends who play games, do you.
- mandraque, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3for ten bucks im buying it right now on steam
- android8675, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3HL2, really? I'd put either F.E.A.R. game over Half Life, but everyone's heard of all these games, so it doesn't really fit with the theme of the article.
- urik88, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3The game "I have no mouth and I must scream" is based on a short story with the same name. Read it. It's awesomely *****.
http://data.antonindanek.cz/Harlan%20Ellison-I%20h ... - android8675, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3Actually... I've played Haunted House (still have my original copy), Illbleed (J Import), I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, and Lurking Horror (Infocom forever!).
I'm old, and I love good horror. Wonder if they should add Call of Cthulu to that list, not nearly as old, freaky as hell, and probably fairly underrated. - santiago1, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3 Harlan Ellison is one of the best Science Fiction writers to have ever lived in my opinion! I've always loved reading his works, even when I was young. I love how his mind puts the reader subtly (and sometimes not so much!) into the most disturbing environments.
- TalahRama, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3"DID SOMEONE TOUCH THE CONSOLE? WHY DID IT RESTART?!"
- doomestic, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3I thought System Shock 2 was pretty mainstream, especially given the fact that Bioshock was mostly hyped as a combination of Fallout and System Shock 2.
- shroommi, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3"The pictured student ID and “G.U.E. at a Glance” freshman guidebook actually shipped with The Lurking Horror in order to help enhance your imagination. Also inside the box, but not mentioned anywhere on the outside of the box, was a rubber centipede based on the creepy crawlies featured in the game. That nasty little surprise was left for players to discover on their own."
Oh, I would love to have seen someone open the box and actually be scared of the rubber centipede. But wouldn't it's red color give away the fact it's fake? - dvdking, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2They forgot Severed Heads for the Amiga. At one point you have to cut the hand off of a dead person to unlock the door. I got to do some work on that title...Ah the memories.
- Halsfield, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2"..games you've never played"
This is why it was not on the list. - MentalBeaver, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2I wish you a permanently itchy *****.
- 7m7uf, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Not on the list, but I always liked "A.M.B.E.R: Journeys Beyond" but most people i know never heard of it.
- TwoKill, on 10/28/2009, -3/+5Seven games I'll never play because this list spoiled the ending to each and every one of them.
- ylikone, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Yes so did I, but I never found it to be scary... boring? yes.
- YmerejO42, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2It's an Infocom game, there's an interpreter called Windows Frotz, freely available on the web. If someone wants it, send me a message at ymerejo42 at gmail and I can email you a copy.
- Philbert, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Or just the internet.
- nigelsan, on 10/30/2009, -0/+2HELLA
- nigelsan, on 10/28/2009, -1/+3I really enjoyed playing Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
that game was hella scary at the time. - Yellowphant, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2It didn't make the list because it was a game you have played.
- PointGiven, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I don't know how it would translate into a video game, but the ending was great although very sad.
- roebeet, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2x2. For 10 dollars, I downloaded it. Sounds like the equivalent of indie music - cuts out the middleman, so it saves the consumer some $ and hopefully gives more money to the development team.
Doesn't work on WINE, at least not so far. But, I can just dual-boot into Windows. - therayven, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2They missed the first Clock Tower for SNES/PS1, a point-and-click where a terrifying little boy with gigantic hedge clippers chases your poor orphaned ass around a weird mansion. Great, unexpected scares (watch out for the mirror!) and plenty of "oh ***** oh *****" moments as you try to hide from him. (Like Sweet Home, it's another Japan-only horror game; you can easily find the ROM and English patch.)
- PointGiven, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Too bad "Scratches" didn't make this list
- DrProfessional, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Anyone here play phantasmagoria, pretty scary when I was ten at least
