I'M COMING FOR YOU GAMEPRO
OM NOM NOM NOM - DrMilkdad, on 10/10/2008, -9/+107Duke 3D over Halo 3, ***** YEAH!
- brsteve88, on 10/11/2008, -2/+73It should not be Halo 3 on the list, it should be Halo. For its time, Halo did everything better than Halo 3. The first thing did something different with huge levels and environments, and then the others forgot why everyone loved the first one.
- yeaidigg, on 10/11/2008, -4/+65where's TF2??
- dha07030, on 10/10/2008, -7/+65Call of Duty 4 or Half Life 2, that's is a tough choice. I would go with HL2 because of the mods. Has anyone played Insurgency or Zombie Panic?
- PopASquatt, on 10/11/2008, -0/+49GTA is not a FPS.
- ThinkRad, on 10/10/2008, -2/+41Ok Deus Ex is on there, crisis averted. Since I don't need to go burn down the GamePro offices anymore, anyone else up for juice and cookies?

- onux16, on 10/11/2008, -0/+34Top Two Overused Phrases of This Article:
1. It's more of an experience than a game.
2. It set the stage for Halo. - DrShotgun, on 10/11/2008, -0/+33Why is the CSS picture from CS 1.6?
Why is the Half-Life 2 picture from a beta version? - Koush, on 10/11/2008, -0/+28Why is alien vs predators sporting the Deus Ex picture?
I always thought that Deus Ex was a fairly bad FPS game, that being said, I thought it was an incredible adventure/RPG game. - ThinkRad, on 10/10/2008, -1/+27Actually, let's forget it.
- boink, on 10/10/2008, -6/+32let's not forget Daikatana.
- gamermatt89, on 10/10/2008, -2/+25F.E.A.R., Perfect Dark, Timesplitters. I'm glad underrated games like these made the list and this list was not compiled by rabid fanboys.
- JParsons4, on 10/11/2008, -0/+21Wolfenstein 3D baby, Wolfenstein 3D
- migshark, on 10/11/2008, -0/+20Is it just me, or does it have a picture for deus ex with the title 'alien vs predator'?
Revolutionary game, Deus Ex. - Mootabolife, on 10/11/2008, -1/+19I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubblegum.
- migshark, on 10/11/2008, -2/+20I'll rip off your head and ***** down your neck.
- swedeniscold, on 10/11/2008, -1/+18Buried for not having Quake (the original) on the list. It should easily make the top 5. Go home and read some gaming history.
- tbredofsin, on 10/11/2008, -0/+17Replace #2 with "Halo ripped it off" and the article would indeed be far more accurate.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -4/+21Meh.
Tribes, BF1942, half-life, GTA and CS are the games I played and enjoyed the most. And they're the games on which all other FPS are based.
Tribes gave us the large single environments.
CS gave us tactical and realistic team play.
BF1942 gave us the vehicles and HUGE environments.
Half-life proved that game stories could be good, well developped and even better than movies. It was the first great gaming story.
GTA gave us complete freedom in a large environment.
And as usual, they leave out the real pioneer: Spasim.
That's the first FPS (1974). Played on the PLATO network.
It should always be number one, because it is the number one. - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -12/+29
#1 Counter Strike original - TheLakeTroll, on 10/10/2008, -0/+17Shake it baby, Wanna dance?
- idoliside, on 10/11/2008, -0/+17Its from a beta test shown at a game expo.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1628? Why such a weird number? Why not pull two more games out of your ass and make it an even 30.
- ZenDriver, on 10/11/2008, -3/+19McDonalds sells more cheeseburgers than any other restaurant, by a huge margin. That doesn't mean that the Big Mac would ever make anyone's list of top 28 cheeseburgers in the country...
Plus - part of most traditional FPS games is the single player campaign which sets the tone and provides context for the multiplayer mode. HL2, for example, gets the #1 spot because of it's combination of gameplay and stunning, immersive atmosphere and storytelling. CS has nothing to tickle those neurons and, as such, gets a lower spot on the list. - dha07030, on 10/10/2008, -3/+17John Romero failed to make you his bitch.
- Balanced, on 10/11/2008, -1/+15Halflife 2 also has some amazingly immersive storytelling. It doesn't have nearly as much of the usual 'cutscene downtime' msot games have (i.e. where you realize it's a cutscene and you're safe so you calm down) and it used cutscenes very sparingly... A lot of storytelling is setting the mood by things like the rooftop chase in the first section that seemed like an amazing 'action movie' recreation to me.
- Hollow5, on 10/11/2008, -0/+13why don't i recognize the screen shot from half life 2?
- MrMax182, on 10/11/2008, -1/+14Deus Ex was the *****, but the sequel was *****.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+14I miss Battlefield 1942 and Desert Combat and Forgotten Hope... good times good times
why did DICE have to sign with EA and screw it all up - e03179, on 10/11/2008, -6/+18What? Counter-Strike...the most played FPS multiplayer game of all time is just #20?
- staffell, on 10/11/2008, -0/+12Thanks for that.
- CeeJayDK, on 10/11/2008, -1/+12Portal is not a First Person Shooter
- goffy59, on 10/11/2008, -0/+11The list is kind of lame. But I guess the site has a right to its own opinion. I think its a pretty narrow perspective on FPS games; Halo 3 or Cod4 do not deserve to be on that high on the list. Cod4 is a solid game but its nothing new(as far as ideas; howeever I think it should still be on that list or at least they could just put "cod series"). But Halo is actually just a clone from most of the games already on the list. What about blake stone? Thats pretty generic like much of the games on the list. It just seems inconsistent. Are they going for popularity, or innovative? I don't know which. Its hard to put all those games that offered different things on the same list. And why the hell is metroid prime on there? That seems like its misplaced(oh I forgot, people liked the idea of the samus being a girl and were shocked when they figured it out).
At least most of the greats are on there. Why did they pick Quake 2 though? Quake 1 was the revolutionary one. And why didn't they put up Quake? Or why couldn't they group a lot of these like "quake series", "cod series", etc? - Enche, on 10/11/2008, -5/+16TF2 > ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -1/+12I can imagine Call of Duty 4 on this list because of the single-player campaign. It was amazing, and would've justified spending $50 even without the multiplayer if it only had been a little longer.
- Mootabolife, on 10/11/2008, -0/+10Really? Because I don't think you know where the original quote came from.
- Dundasbro, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9***** you Power Rangers are awesome.
- Balanced, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9Yet they left of Marathon 1, 2 or Infinity, which really did set the stage for Halo.
- pkmccoy99, on 10/11/2008, -2/+11GET OUT OF HERE STALKER!
- petebot, on 10/10/2008, -0/+9That will be more of an RPG.
But yeah, I can't wait for it. - alarchy, on 10/11/2008, -0/+8Why is AvP2's screenshot a scene from Deus Ex? I mean, Deus Ex is awesome and all - but that's a little inaccurate. I also, personally, wouldn't rank CoD4 so high on the list. Good game? Sure. But it's short as hell, and its storyline really isn't that compelling. Why no Half-Life 1? That was pretty much the game that brought FPS games into the 21st century. I dunno.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/11/2008, -0/+8I was going to ask the same question. I remember finishing Half-Life 2 and wonder... "hey... i didn't get to see the blue energy tentacle monster form that screenshot".
- Stinkylicious, on 10/11/2008, -10/+18Buried for Bioshock being above Goldeneye.
Dugg for Timesplitters.
Wait a tick... - MLGLies, on 10/11/2008, -0/+8It's absolutely shocking that Halo 1 was not on this list. Anyone who thinks Halo 3 has better gameplay than Halo 1 is not a true gamer.
- JustinPM, on 10/11/2008, -0/+8Quake 2 is better than 3. In my opinion at least. Logical progression of levels and to be honest the two can't be compared. Quake 3 is arena combat whereas 2 is classic FPS. Two separate sub genres.
- JustinPM, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7Halo is not influential. If you're looking for the influence "spawned" by Halo just keep looking further back at Bungie's Marathon series. Halo is not unique. It is derivative.
- Kristijan12, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8HL2 for story too!
- Kylesoccer05, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7Yes, Insurgency mixes a little of battlefield 2 and counter-strike, much slower paced then counter-strike as u join a squad and move with that squad to capture control points.
Zombie Panic Source is also a great mod, it is a zombie survival game, where one guy starts as the zombie and infects other players until all humans are infected. But once Left 4 Dead comes out, there will be no point in playing this mod. -
