The Top 10 Video Game Easter Eggs
1pstart.net — Great article listing cool video game easter eggs, some will surprise you. Guess what's #1?

- linuxrocks2007, on 03/23/2008, -9/+51The Metal Gear Solid fight against Psycho Mantis wasn't very much of an easter egg, but more as a technique to finish the boss.
- WilliamDS, on 03/23/2008, -15/+2I'd probably still consider it an easter egg.
- mywhitenoise, on 03/23/2008, -0/+24No it isn't. An Easter egg is supplemental material. You have to do the controller swap in order to progress in the game.
- subxero37, on 03/23/2008, -5/+2As far as I know, it isn't completely required.
For example, there was a PC version of Metal Gear Solid, for Windows; you obviously can't switch controller ports on a PC, so there was a way around it, which is also present in the PS version. - CraigReed, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1You wear the gas mask.
- subxero37, on 03/23/2008, -5/+2As far as I know, it isn't completely required.
- mywhitenoise, on 03/23/2008, -0/+24No it isn't. An Easter egg is supplemental material. You have to do the controller swap in order to progress in the game.
- Azimuth1, on 03/23/2008, -0/+8I've always wondered how that worked in the PC version of the game. Anyone know?
- digggthat, on 03/23/2008, -16/+4you press the reset button on ur cpu
- capiCrimm, on 03/23/2008, -1/+8everyone knows your supposed to flip the red switch on your Power Supply, dumbass.
- Ataxia2008, on 03/24/2008, -1/+5You swap your 2 RAM chips around
- Kadratis, on 03/23/2008, -0/+17Actually, you die once and come back. Campbell says something along the lines of "Why can't you change controllers? Why don't you try destroying the statues on each side of the room?" Apparently, Mantis gets distracted when you destroy the masks off of them because the resemble his face. That method is probably more of an easter egg than the controller swap itself. ;-)
- dsmx, on 03/23/2008, -0/+5I could beat psyco mantis without resorting to switching controller ports it's not that hard.
- capnarrr, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2on the PC version (which was just an emulated copy of the PS1 metal gear solid) the colonel's voice still said to use the second controller port, but the subtitles told you to use the keyboard. This was kind of silly since most of the time you're using the keyboard anyway if you're playing the PC port.
- digggthat, on 03/23/2008, -16/+4you press the reset button on ur cpu
- Kadratis, on 03/23/2008, -5/+1Comment deleted, wrong reply tree or whatever >_
- chaoswings, on 03/23/2008, -0/+6I'm getting "403 Forbidden" does that count as an easter egg?
- WilliamDS, on 03/23/2008, -15/+2I'd probably still consider it an easter egg.
- adh3isive, on 03/23/2008, -3/+8Can someone explain the Agent 47 pic which I'm assuming is #2?
- WilliamDS, on 03/23/2008, -1/+8yeah it's sort of an easter egg in the article :) lol
- WilliamDS, on 03/23/2008, -2/+10I hate to give it away, but just highlight the text
- nico623, on 03/23/2008, -38/+3Man do egg farts stink !
- Ajajadude, on 03/23/2008, -4/+29What about being able to play as Hillary and Bill Clinton in NBA Jam?
- tbone8978, on 03/23/2008, -1/+50BOOMSHAKALAKA
- fcukthisgame, on 03/23/2008, -1/+9SLAMALAMADINGDONG!

- podoshj, on 03/23/2008, -6/+30And Hillary comes under sniper fire when going for the jam!
- viewdrix, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4What about the negative world in Super Mario Bros.?
- GeneralFailure0, on 03/24/2008, -0/+7That was more of a glitch, since you weren't ever intended to be able to get there. Though I'd say it's much closer to an easter egg than the Psycho Mantis gimmick.
- tbone8978, on 03/23/2008, -1/+50BOOMSHAKALAKA
- EmitStop, on 03/23/2008, -22/+2Where the hell is Portal?
- serpanterra, on 03/23/2008, -1/+26Portal wasn't an Easter egg, it's a game in its own right
- thejokell, on 03/23/2008, -1/+7The cake is a pie.
- brainboy77, on 03/23/2008, -18/+2i was expecting hot coffee but whatever.
- bigbadgoat, on 03/23/2008, -2/+19Yeah, you mean the "easter egg" where you needed to hack the game to play material that was cut from the original game but accidently left on the disc?
Ohh that one.
See, in order for it to be an easter egg, it would have to be intentional. - wtfunkymonkey, on 03/23/2008, -0/+8That's not an easter egg, that was content that was never supposed to be there requiring a mod in order to unlock it.
- bigbadgoat, on 03/23/2008, -2/+19Yeah, you mean the "easter egg" where you needed to hack the game to play material that was cut from the original game but accidently left on the disc?
- ConNERD, on 03/23/2008, -2/+65This article is rubbish. It doesn't even explain the MGS Easter Egg.
- xBBx, on 03/23/2008, -1/+3I don't even know what you're talking about. How much more of an explanation do you need than "Put Controller In Controller Port 2"?
- hammburglar, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3what does it do? or are we just overthinking this. for all those people who havent played MGS.
- p2a1x7, on 03/24/2008, -0/+7Psycho Mantis can read minds. If you plug in the controller to port 2 he cannot "read your mind" and won't be able to dodge all your shots. Also brings up a blue screen with Hideo in the corner if I remember correctly.
- Jesusridesabike, on 03/24/2008, -2/+3Black screen*
- sarixe, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1yes, black screen with a play on words, Video + Hideo Kojima.
- hammburglar, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3what does it do? or are we just overthinking this. for all those people who havent played MGS.
- chapium, on 03/23/2008, -0/+23I dont see how thats even an easter egg. They tell you half way through the boss fight to do that.
- YellowSnowDemon, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1"I see you have been playing Super Mario Sunshine..."
- xBBx, on 03/23/2008, -1/+3I don't even know what you're talking about. How much more of an explanation do you need than "Put Controller In Controller Port 2"?

- prowlerjm, on 03/23/2008, -5/+5Amazing game!
I hope they make a sequel on PS3 FTW!!! - TrevorBelmont, on 03/23/2008, -4/+4That wasn't a sentence. There was no verb.
- cme884, on 03/23/2008, -2/+10While it was a sentence fragment, "get" is a verb. Take away "The fact that" and it's a proper sentence.
- TrevorBelmont, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2That was my point. The subject of the sentence as it is written is "the fact". "The fact" isn't doing anything aside from rendering the sentence incomplete.

Two comments above yours... - nickerbocker, on 03/23/2008, -2/+2Here's a little mirror hint. Replace digg.com in the URL with duggmirror.com to check to see if they have a mirror for it. Try that next time.

- str1fe, on 03/23/2008, -4/+5Konami Code is only #4?
- Lanlost, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1Without meaning to sound like an elitist, most people know the code only because its hyped up to be a code that everyone knew and was the greatest code ever. I'm not sure ifs so great because of this reason (trendy), or if it really was a great code. Everyone knew it in the NES days but I'm not sure it is the greatest code for any reason.
I would personally choose something like the code in Street Fighter 2 that let you fight against the same character. I remember being ***** off that I couldn't play as the same character as my friend who happened to be the best at the same character. It was a godsend and blew me away more than any code at the time when we found it.

The Top 10 Video Game Easter Eggs
Posted by mrjuandrful in Easter Eggs, Entertainment, Nerd News
HAPPY EASTER Kiddies, I’ve created a top 10 list for you that is chock full of Easter Egg surprises without the tin foil. We all have played and beaten games, but did you ever take a minute to wonder if maybe there’s more to the game than you knew. Reminiscing that my childhood video games were sitting on the shelves at that time unplayed yet still full of Easter Egg life ticks me off. But it’s never too late to go back and try these Video Game Easter Eggs, after all it is Sunday… and there should be an Old School Sunday (OSS) article around here somewhere.
10. Legend of Zelda
The Egg: When you start the game type in “Zelda” as you character name to unlock the 2nd quest mode.
The System: NES
Don’t expect to breeze through this game these monsters are tougher and items are more difficult to get. Don’t believe me try the game here. Nintendo8.com has every NES game all in flash. Pretty awesome site if you ask me.
9. Monkey Island Series
The Egg: Hit Ctrl+W to beat the game.
The System: PC
For those players who could not take the insults anymore, this code allowed you to simply…beat the game. This code worked in ALL Monkey islands, and I’m glad it’s not THAT publicly known. The Monkey island series were fun, puzzle style PC games that mixed in humor. Why on earth would anyone want to hit those key combinations is beyond me, but now you know! You Cheater!
8. Metal Gear Solid
The Egg: Change your controller port to player 2 against Psycho Mantis
The System: PSone
This is by far the most creative idea in a game to date. I mean who would think of switching your controller while your playing against a boss. Genius I tell ya, GENIUS!
7. Doom II
John Romero Head
The Egg: Enter “idclip” during the game. When you get to the final boss, run under him to reveal a narrow tunnel. And there he is, like a scene from “Lord of the Flies” John Romero’s (lead designer) head on a stick.. Eww gross.
The System: PC
Esqueleto
“Ewww, Grosss!”
6. God of War II
God Of War 2 HD
The Egg: To enable HD mode hit L1, L2, L3, Circle and Square simultaneously any time before the “Sony Computer Entertainment Presents” screen pops up. If you’ve done it right the letters should turn purple.
The System: PS2
By far, one of the best games to hit the PS2. If you were looking for a great game that will hold up on the PS3 give this a try. Kratoss’ kick ass approach along with his fear nothing, fear no one made this game a hit. To watch it in HD makes it THAT much Kick-Assier.. is that a word?
5. World of Warcraft (WOW)
Chicken Quest
The Egg: THE CHICKEN QUEST: Head to Sal-deans’ Farm in Westfall and find a chicken. To unlock the secret you have to do the “Chicken Dance” for the chicken about a hundred times. Set up a macro to enter the command easily–bring up Options, select Macros, choose the icon you want and enter the command “/chicken”. Then put the icon in an action bar.
Soon you’ll see the message, “Chicken looks at you quizzically. Maybe you should inspect it?” Accept the quest and purchase the special chicken feed from Farmer Saldean. Return to the chicken and type “/cheer” before feeding the chicken. Do this right and the chicken will lay an egg. This egg is your new pet, a prairie chicken.
The System: PC
I’d recommend trying this quest when no one is around. You still might want to let other’s in the area know that your trying this just incase they try and kill the chicken. But you will get the occasional “South Park Jerk” who will not leave you alone and attack the chicken anyhow.
4. The “Konami Code”
Konami Code
The Egg: up, up, down, down, left, right, left right, B, A, Start (or select start for 2 players with 30 lives in Contra like my brother Gonzo says)
The System: All
Anyone who has played video games has heard of this code. But what a lot of people might not know is that this code can be used in over 100 Konami and non-Konami games alike. I created a sub category Top 10 Konami codes below:
1. Contra (Famicom/NES) - Entering the code at the title screen gives the player 30 lives.
2. Gradius (Famicom/NES) - The first ever use of the code. Pausing the game and then entering the code activates all powerups except for Speed Up and Double.
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (Super Famicom/SNES) - Entering the code at the title screen on controller 2 allows the selection of 10 lives in the Options menu.
4. Dance Dance Revolution 2nd Remix (PS) - Entering the code Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right on the Mode Selection Screen will unlock Super Mode.
5. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (PS2, Xbox, PC) - In addition to the usage in the original Sons of Liberty, entering “UUDDLRLRBA” as the player’s username in Missions mode will unlock all missions and characters.
6. Silent Hill 3 (PS2, PC) - Beating the game once, then entering the code in the title screen will cause Douglas Cartland, a supporting character, to appear in his underwear in each cutscene.
7. Final Fight 2 (Capcom, SNES) - This game features a variant on the code: Down, Down, Up, Up, Right, Left, Right, Left, L, R. When entered at the title screen, both players will be able to select the same character in a two player game.
8. The Orange Box (Valve, Xbox 360, PS3) - Entering Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A (Circle, X on the PS3) in either Half-Life 2, Episode One or Episode Two spawns a medkit directly to the player’s location, which replenishes a maximum of 25 health points.
9. Viva Piñata: Party Animals (Xbox 360) - Entering the code on the main menu will unlock an achievement worth 10 gamerpoints, entitled “Classic Gamer Reward”
10. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (LucasArts, PS2, Xbox, GameCube) - At any menu screen, when the code is entered, the Ewok celebration song from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi will play.
Like I said, this list is well over 100 so if your interested check out the rest here.
3. Mortal Kombat
Toasty
The Egg: After landing a strong uppercut against the opponent, the face of sound designer Dan Forden would appear in the lower-right corner of the screen and shout, “Toasty!” The “Toasty” shout had originated from Scorpion’s finishing move. He would remove his mask to reveal a (sometimes) fiery skull and spit fire at his opponent. This is demonstrated in “Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks”. In the Portal stage, if the player very quickly held down and hit the start button before Dan’s head left the screen, they would then instantly begin a new stage against a secret character named Smoke, a grey recolor of Scorpion.
The System: Arcade, SNES
Unfortunately no matter how fast my fingers are my brain isn’t. I’ve only seen a couple people accomplish this and my brother BB is one of them. Damn you BB.
2. Hitman: Contracts
Now you see me?
Ah ha, so you found me… either you somehow highlighted this text to read this one or the damn JPEG gave it away. Smart fellow you are (Yoda Jive)
For figuring this out, here’s your Egg.
The Egg:
1. In the traditions of the trade level enter the building and turn right
2. go in the door and wait for the guard to leave
3. once he leaves and the door closes pick the lock on the door opposite to the one you used to come into the room
4. once you open the door go through the door and look right
5. when you are looking right you will see a corner
6. If you quickly run to the wall you are facing and look left you can see a ghost go through a wall
BONUS:if you pick the lock on the door that the ghost go’s and enter the room you can see a myou go into the bathroom and look in the mirror you can see the ghost for about 2 or 3 seconds
The System: PS2, PC, Xbox
1. Grand Theft Auto
No Eggs up here
Now I was thinking of creating a whole article to all the Easter Eggs in the GTA series, and if this post is a hit I will. The GTA franchise know what people want, small lines of code which a few people will see but all will appreciate them. Without further a due the GTA series Easter Eggs!!!
The Egg: Go to the bridge that connects San Fierro to Las Venturas. Get to the top some how and you will see a sign that says,
“There are no Easter Eggs up here Go away.”
The System: PS2
average list :s- atreusk, on 03/23/2008, -22/+1***** you! I want to see the pictures especially the GTA san andreas one....
- BadBosco, on 03/24/2008, -0/+5***** you, your very unappreciative.
- sture, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3Ah man, I remember when I saw that ghost from Hitman: Contracts.... It really freaked me out. :/
Although I never managed to see him again after I replayed the map several times, so I was never sure if it actually happened or not.... until now!
- atreusk, on 03/23/2008, -22/+1***** you! I want to see the pictures especially the GTA san andreas one....
- deadnelsons, on 03/23/2008, -1/+6http://duggmirror.com/gaming_news/The_Top_10_Video ...
- jeexbit, on 03/23/2008, -5/+17I'm guessing #1 was the secret room in the Adventure game for Atari - now off to check out the article...
- wtfunkymonkey, on 03/23/2008, -1/+7You'd be wrong, it didn't even make the list. Surprisingly enough.
- laserblazer, on 03/23/2008, -0/+5The magic dot!
- myranttoyou, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4Most of those listed are stupid, and not Easter Eggs. Adventure should be listed for sure, and probably the 1st on the list given the significance.
- scottmc, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2Yes Adventure, and the one from the Atari 2600 missile command:
Select game 13 and allow the incoming missiles to reach your cities, and fire all your missiles without scoring any points. The city on the right side will turn into "RF", the initials of programmer Rob Fulop. (From atariage.com)- jeexbit, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1nice!
- leetdood, on 03/23/2008, -3/+71Most of these aren't even easter eggs.
- Loornadune, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2I'm pretty sure an easter egg is just something the devs put into the game for kicks. IE: In a DVD menu they could put an icon that isn't relaly noticeable unless you force the cursor to go over it.
- mywhitenoise, on 03/23/2008, -11/+3"The Egg: To enable HD mode hit L1, L2, L3, Circle and Square simultaneously any time before the “Sony Computer Entertainment Presents” screen pops up. If you’ve done it right the letters should turn purple.

***** *****, man!
I have a PS3, and I have to press the PS button and wait for it to sync for PS2 games. By the time its done syncing, I lose my opportunity to do this.- breakfast, on 03/23/2008, -3/+11use your usb cable. take a chill pill.
- TrevorBelmont, on 03/23/2008, -6/+4Take a chill pill? If you keep this up I'm going to have to ask you to talk to the hand. See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya.
- mynameiscece, on 03/24/2008, -4/+3thats what you get for wasting your money on a ps3 and not buying a Wii instead!
- mywhitenoise, on 03/24/2008, -2/+2I have a Wii, and that is by far the biggest waste of money I have EVER spent on a console.
- breakfast, on 03/23/2008, -3/+11use your usb cable. take a chill pill.
- HyperJack, on 03/23/2008, -0/+11I always liked the "You're not supposed to be here" one from GTA III.
- gpcprog, on 03/23/2008, -4/+13Whatever happened to the secret cow level from Diablo II (and possibly Diablo I, even though Blizzard denies it every existed).
- overkilpro, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4man the cow level in diablo 2 owned. how can you possibly beat a level where tons of cows are trying to chop you up with axes? I'm not sure if it counts as an easter egg though since it isn't much of a secret when you see game rooms titled "SeCrEt CoWs N0oBs NoT aLlOwEd"
- tcasey22, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4lvl ups on that level with orb sorcs was awesome. My favorite was killing the cow king just so the person who created the portal couldn't make the portal ever again. muhahahahahah!
- slimjim5107, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0So mean :( I hate people who did that to me!!
- archangeloliver, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2You are a part of the problem.
- GeekyGerge, on 03/23/2008, -5/+95I get the feeling that a 10 year old wrote this
- Kink, on 03/23/2008, -1/+9Surprised the actual easter egg in the hidden apartment in Vice City isn't there.
- cyrix, on 03/23/2008, -1/+2You're referring to the wall you jump through from the Heli Pad right? Where the chocolate egg is? Or are you referring to Apartment 3C with the bathroom scene from Scarface?
- VyPR, on 03/23/2008, -7/+9Buried as inaccurate. There's no mention of the Virtual Valerie 2 Buttblaster mode.
Er....
/slowly walks away- philman467, on 03/24/2008, -1/+9so you stopped walking away slowly?
- VyPR, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Yes, and ran like hell instead. Or something.
(Busted)
- VyPR, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Yes, and ran like hell instead. Or something.
- philman467, on 03/24/2008, -1/+9so you stopped walking away slowly?
- holyreality, on 03/23/2008, -3/+9surprised the super mario bros -1 world wasn't included.
- twishart, on 03/23/2008, -1/+7That was more of a glitch though, no? It'd be nice if it was a secret level in smash bros or something.
- NorthKorea, on 03/24/2008, -3/+11. no, it wasn't a "glitch." a lot of programming went into that.
2. i like the attack of the chickens from Zelda: Link to the Past - when you kept harassing a chicken, eventually a huge swarm would kick your ass from every direction.
3. also, the cool thing about the Romero head-on-a-stick was that the head would turn to look at you, no matter where you were.
4. Wolfenstein 3D - giant PacMan Ghosts.... crazy!
- NorthKorea, on 03/24/2008, -3/+11. no, it wasn't a "glitch." a lot of programming went into that.
- twishart, on 03/23/2008, -1/+7That was more of a glitch though, no? It'd be nice if it was a secret level in smash bros or something.
- dho331, on 03/23/2008, -21/+0Bunnies don't lay eggs. I really do hate Christian Holidays. I'm going to go play Crysis, kthx.
- Pake, on 03/23/2008, -2/+16You have got to be kidding me... Diablo 2's cow level didn't make the list? I mean shesh, it's a freaking classic....
- twishart, on 03/23/2008, -1/+20Why would the Konami code be considered an 'easter egg'? There's no intentionally hidden message there.
- Jeffler, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1WRONG! You see, the 2nd up's 2,150th bit...
Oh forget it.
- Jeffler, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1WRONG! You see, the 2nd up's 2,150th bit...
- synchestric, on 03/23/2008, -1/+20The Dopefish lives...
... noobs.- jeexbit, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1that *is* a killer egg, no doubt...
- JulyZerg, on 03/23/2008, -7/+6I'd LOVE to know why there's no #2... This is an awful list...
- mearom, on 03/23/2008, -2/+9Smart you are not

No super mario minus world or turtle 1-up trick- ArmandoM, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1Those are a bug and a trick. Neither was intended to be there by the programmers.
- Dantetheinferno, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4www.eeggs.com
Anyone remember the multitude of sites like that? All they were devoted to was easter eggs. Sadly, with so much security concious businesses, developers didn't want to put new eggs in as often because of fear of security weakness. Anyone else remember the flight simulator in excel 97?- juiceguy20, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2LOL, I am glad I'm not the only one who remembers that.

Hard to do because one of the items you needed to use was invisible and you had to use the bridge to get to it.

Two terminals showed seemingly random gibberish - until some smart cookie decided to copy and combine the text, and then run it through Stuffit Expander to reveal a network level - http://marathon.bungie.org/story/hangar96.html
