- john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Thanks for your input.. But for those of us who don't own a $250 handheld with mediocre games, the DS is a nice alternative.
- AgentWD40, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17The NDS has NES ans SNES emulation. Yes, third party devices are required, but are becoming cheaper and smaller (fit completely inside the DS Lite now). One you should check out if interested is the G6 Lite. It comes preinstalled with a large list of emulators, plus a PDA, mp3 and movie player. A good place to find reviews of these devices is http://www.gbatemp.net
- errorjustin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19The shadier side of DS emulation is alive and well as well. The feature just chose to focus on the brighter side of the scene. You know... ingenuity, creativity, and new ideas, instead of explaining to gamers how they could steal 15 year old Super Nintendo games.
- drunkbeard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Call it stealing if you want, but until Nintendo releases some of the truly classic SNES games, I'll keep taking them on the go. They've released some of the better ones for GBA in years past, but not all of them are out there yet.
Chrono Trigger, anyone? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Digg this down if you must, but if you are interested in learning more I actually run a DS homebrew podcast. Its a good resource and you can learn alot more from it.
http://ndshomebrewcast.podomatic.com - XStatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wish one of these systems supported homebrew applications.
The could offer a sandbox card that would allow unlicensed applications to run with restrictions that would limit the possibilioty of using it for commercial code piracy. - scxzor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yeah, I'd much rather learn more about the original and legit things the homebrew community is doing over piracy.
- john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Actually, I'd love to be able to play some of the snes games I already own on my DS, thanks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Digg, Nintendo good.
On a side note just to let you know how kewl nintendo is, i accidenyly dropped my DS into the toilet bowl, pulled it out very quickly, let it out to dry overnight, turned it on in the morning and it still turned on!!
only thing was the top screen was sorta out of whack, called nintendo, they said it was gonna be $75 to repair but since i had just bought it last month, they took off $25. so only $50 to repair.
that's why nintendo rocks. - pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5When in doubt:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_homebrew - Cbeck527, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5were you playing your DS on the toilet??
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i really wish these gaming companies would figure out that homebrew is a GOOD thing and allow us to write our own apps for these systems we pay too much money for
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A hundred bucks for a DS without considering homebrew is "too much money?" Dude, a hundred bucks for a DS is paltry, even if you're only using it to play purchased games.
- flipside3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No kidding on Chrono Trigger. I've been playing Final Fantasy Origins on my SP lately, and I have to admit that I love the little tweaks they made to FF1. It would be amazing if we could get a tweaked up CT. Perhaps with the speedup feature in ChronoCross.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes, instead of reading a magazine or newspaper, i play my DS while on the toilet, it happened when i was about to sit down on the toilet.
- xAix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i think DS homebrew is going great. There are a lot of posibilities for the tiny white device that i keep in my car. With DS homebrew scene going on its conforting to know that there are posibilities by homebrew developers to create something new and usefull for the DS and the tought of Endless features for it made me feel that my money is worth splurging on the DSLite. Go Homebrew ! More NDS Tools Homebrew can be found here :
http://www.mxemu.com/nds-flash-linker-tools.php - ntpd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3uh... it's $249 - that guy wasn't lying. the "core" package is $199 (just includes the psp). the "value" package is $249 (includes headphones and a 32MB memory stick).
the interesting part about homebrew for the psp is that almost all "core" packs include a device with a ta-802 motherboard, which does not support homebrew (it does not support the downgraders or the modchip). so most people that want to homebrew buy an older psp or the "value" pack, which costs $249. - uncoolcentral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My pal has a great tutorial for DS (and one for GBA too.)

I agree. I bought my PSP mostly for homebrew. I kenw about it's lackluster software library, but because of the homebrew scene, I gladly threw down my $250 to buy one. I haven't regretted it at all. Between the video/audio programs (streaming over my home wifi), nes, snes, sega emulation, and other capabilities, I couldn't imagine owning a different portable device. - CyberGlitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This article misses some of the coolest homebrew projects around. Their goal? To make the DS a virtual PC.
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4magister and tech must have good luck, even with the homebrew options my PSP is collecting dust. Its just not doin it for me, I prefer the DS for its touch generation games, they truly are original and much more fun than non-touch games, IMO
- AgentWD40, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6You should check out the GP2X. Its a handheld device with Linux installed.
- JimmyB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"honestly everything you can do on the ds, you can do on the psp"
I disagree. The touch screen on the DS allows for much more PDA-style functions. With DSOrganise you can keep a scribble pad, as well as use Beup (MSN Messenger for DS) which has a virtual touch screen keyboard. On the topic of Beup, its a superb piece of homebrew, with MSN handwriting support, display pictures, proper msn sounds and of course it takes advantage of the DS's wireless. I love my DS, its the first handheld system I've ever owned. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You mean they released a kit that lets you write your own games on the PSP?
Oh, wait, that's right. You meant it as an insult to Microsoft, but you got your facts wrong. Next time, don't go trolling. - futaris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It also gives new meaning to the phrase "the DS is crap"
- pious1313, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Dugg but the article could have provided a clearer window where to start. The link page will help I assume but it would have been nice to have them embedded in the article.
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2gives an entirely new meaning to any voice recognition games exclaiming "FIRE!"
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@techjunkie & Magister
I concur, the only reason I bought the PSP was for the homebrew, there are a few good games on the PSP, but it's flexibility as a platform and the insane number of apps that come out for it on a daily basis is unreal. There are alot of good developers working on brew for this console at the moment.
PSP GPS FTW. - hartley, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1the ds its self is highly lacking hardware wise, and honestly everything you can do on the ds, you can do on the psp. i have both, but nintendo is the only one that actually gets my $$$. how many ds games do i own? 10+. how many psp games? 0. although i must admit i have an supercard sd (which isnt perfect for 'brew, the cf version is much better) although my xrom will play homebrew just fine.
still if you can only afford a ds, and/or hate the psp, then this article is ok. for anyone else who wants better portable emulators and programs. go with a psp. if you dont have wifi, settle on the cheaper, homebrew friendlier gp2x. - josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2This is why PSP went to Hell....They are so Microsoft when it comes to homebrew stuff.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9Somewhat informative.. unfortunately, what it actually did was turn me *off* of the concept of homebrew.
I had been wanting to get into DS Homebrew for a while, with the primary reason being SNES emulation. This article mentioned none of that, and if it's true, homebrew really is no where near where I'd like it to be. - Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2PSP will have PSX and DS emulators soon. OWNED.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Yes, they restrict it alot, but their homebrew apps and games kick the DS's ASS.
- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6*ahem* it's a 200 dollar handheld now.. do ur research before spreading ur FUD
- teckjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -23/+11This is the reason I bought a PSP. I'm really only looking for SNES and NES emulation on a handheld. ISO emulation is also there, but with the PSP there is no need for 3rd party devices and the PSP home brew scene is alive and well with PS1 and N64 emulators being worked on.
http://psphacker.com - FuzionMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -29/+3psp has better homebrew.
