- Attrition, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Flaming babies ftw?
- thinkycap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35I gotta disagree man. Don't get me wrong, I like both games.
I don't find RE all that scary, it's just highly entertaining. Still one of my favorite franchises, in fact I beat all the console releases to date.
But in Silent Hill I get more of a "unpredictable fear" vibe. Like you never know when something is going to jump out on you. More/harder puzzles to solve, genuinely disturbing monsters, the music etc....
Scares the ***** out of me sometimes. - Dibbz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Capcom should have released an 'uncut' version of the game with some of this in it. I would have bought it.
- ilovemusic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Must be really old, considering that's the old playing style, too.
- TheRingmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17RE:Umbrella Chronicles anyone?
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Peed my pants.
- borb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I agree. Gcube version of RE 4 was far....FAR superior to the PS2 version. Especially in terms of cinematics. This is a potential spoiler but there is a cinematic knife fight towards the end of the game and the thing that really through me off was that in the gcube version, you press the button you're called to...and the cinematic continues, smooth as butter. In the PS2 version, you push the button, there's a chug, load, then the cinimatic continues. Very hard to stay immersed in one of the most intense cinematics in the game.
- TrevorBurrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10RE was never as creepy as Silent Hill. This is because of the bullsh*t "virus" explanation for RE. Every time you explain evil you diminish its power. Silent Hill, however, was purely supernatural and purely evil.
But, I love both games. And that footage is really impressive. Notice that the camera moves around "cinematically" like old RE games. It must have been a pretty early version. I doubt we'll ever see it. - royalwcheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Eternal Darkness FTW
- Infekted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Gotta agree with with thinkycap on that one.
silenthill still scares the ***** out of me. - CameronHigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It could and it did. RE4 is one of the best single-player games I've played.
- sdrawkcaB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The whole video for some reason looks way more cinematic than resident evil 4 did. Especially the way that the camera was moving. The way that the hook man teleported short distances was creepy in the way it looks.
- zedr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That video is taken from the first version of the game that was later scrapped. While some of the scenario made it in the final version of Resident Evil 4, the monsters weren't compatible with the new "Las Plagas" storyline and were scrapped. This first version played too much like the prequels and Capcom decided to hand over the designer's chair to Shinji Mikami, who first developed this "Hooked Man" beta, and later the true Resident Evil 4 as we know it.
- jordanday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes, the graphics were that good in the GC version. Honestly, of all the of the last-gen console titles I've played, RE4 on the GC is probably one of the top 3 in terms of graphics. Since the cube had been out for what, like 4 years by the time RE4 came out, the developers had a good long time to learn how to put what muscle it did have to work.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is from 1 of 4 versions of Re4 that capcom was making. Alot of the footage from before the game is from these versions. Capcom said the game just wasnt fun or polished enough so they kept scrapping it which lead to the RE4 we know and love today.
On a side note RE4 for PC was just released and its HORRIBLE. It has graphics that are somehow worse then the PS2 version which in turn were worse then the Cube version. It has no mouse support unless you download a user made hack which adds it in but it doesnt quite work right. Capcom needs to wake up and smell the PC market. A slightly enhanced (graphicly speaking) RE4 with mouse support on PC would have been mindblowingly amazing and they totally dropped the ball and released what looks like a rushed budget title. - Hidama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I didn't find Hookman scary, but I definitely would have liked to fight him.
The dolls are very creepy. - KillerLettuce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Are you nuts? The whole reason they changed the camera angles is because everyone was getting sick of the static cameras and backgrounds. Maybe you should grow some balls and actually be brave enough to finish RE4 next time before you go and trash it.
- Kwipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I kinda wish that they implemented this segment as some sort of unlockable mini-game or alternate story to RE4, but I wish that they had the original RE4 controls instead of using the previous RE control system.
- Eleo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Scarier, yes. But it's just not Resident Evil. It feels like a totally different horror game and has a supernatural vibe to it. I's gonna be pretty hard to explain a hooked man coming out of a painting.
However I never really felt Resident Evil 4 was that scary. It was tense sometimes - like when you first see a chainsaw get revved, or when you're under siege by catapults, but I was never really as afraid as I was when I was playing previous Resident Evil games. The enemies were just too human or too sci-fi and often not horrific enough. Regenerators were the only enemies that truly frightened me.
It looks like Resident Evil 5 is trying to fix this problem by keeping the same type of fast-paced action gameplay but presenting enemies and settings that are frightening and horrific. - sark666, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It gets under my skin when people complain of the old style controls of the RE series. Don't get me wrong, I love re4, but it's a different style of gameplay. I've watched some friends play games with fixed camera angles, and they are just bumping all over the place and they can never seem to 'get it'. I'm not saying anything against the people who don't get it, but there is some mental-spatial relationship that some people just can't get over when camera angles abruptly change. It took me all of two minutes to get used to RE1 back in the day.
Now this gamestyle was born out of the inability of systems at that time to render graphics that good in realtime, so they went with pre-rendered backdrops and only a few elements are actually 3d models, (player, enemies, maybe a chair).
So now that systems can handle comparable graphics in realtime should the old style be thrown out for good? I don't agree. Yes the angles can be a source of frustration, but when used well, sometimes can build suspense when you just see down the end of that corridor and you can't really tell whats moving. This video looked like a nice blend of a semi floating camera and the fixed angles. I would have loved to have tried it. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"The whole video for some reason looks way more cinematic than resident evil 4 did."
I was going to say: Is this from like a RE4 alpha version? This is completely contrary to the control scheme RE4 actually utilized (Which, imo, was far superior). While it may have been more cinematic, it reminded me of how of much of a pain in the ass playing the other RE games was. - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9What your looking like is not droppped final game play.
what your seeing is a test video of how the originally planing game play would have been like.
I for one am glad they didn't use this. That stupid, poor controls. slow walking, bad camera angle
style of game is what keep me away from the resident evil games. - jordanday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4killerlettuce is right -- the camera system that was used in the final version of RE4 was very much superior to the system shown in this video.
I do agree that RE4 did feel a lot more like an "action" game than a "survival horror" game. The last RE I played was 2, and 4 definitely has fewer "surprise!" scary moments, and more "oh crap here come 50 zombies" moments. Still probably one of the top 5 games for the last-gen consoles, though. - entr0py, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm not ashamed to admit that it took me about halfway through this thread to realize that "RE" didn't stand for or "regarding".
Okay, maybe a little. - mmager1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeRZwVg3b2w - youtube version that actually loads
- ryanfelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow I've never played RE4 but that looked amazing!
This may sound ignorant... But I never knew the Gamecube could create such beautiful graphics.. *tear* - LucerinRed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5no, I'm not buying any more revisions of any single resident evil game......until the next one comes out
- Universe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I still remember in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis; when I was playing on hard mode, and Nemesis was chasing me, I ran into a building, thinking I was safe. I exited the other side, and Nemesis jumped down from the top of the building.
That scared the ***** out of me. - wang1011, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The hooked man boss doesn't seem nearly as creative as Nemesis or as intense. He just walked back and forth shooting him. The "dream mode" sequence is really cool though, and is reminiscent of the "nightmare world" of silent hill. They should probably consider that in future installments, as it IS scary as hell.
- massproductions, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ jordanday
I think you hit it right on the head there. Personally, I think that the sudden surprises in earlier RE games and in most Hollywood horror movies are the lowest common denominator when it comes to scaring audiences. The thing that I love about zombie movies is the sheer magnitude of their numbers. That's what makes the survival part of the survival-horror genre. - meepus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9That looked ***** awesome. Capcom can do creepy as ***** in RE better than Silent Hill can...
- schoofman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i liked how the screen changed to "bluish" when you fought, so it was kind of like a dream sequence. the camera and controls looked horrible though. i can't imagine fighting the "hook man" by running around a dining room table...
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Meh.
'Uncut' wouldn't get my money. This vid looks creepy, but what we've all played sure feels more fun than that. Yeah, it's scary, sets a mood that sucks you in the game, but at the same time, it feels like what was there before.
I hope RE5 is a mix of this mood and the action of RE4... it would make it the best yet. - TDR25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Almost 4 years after the first release of this game on the now dead Cube and PS2, and it's still generating a huge buzz over the internets...now if that's not a sign of a good game, than I don't know what is! RE4 is tight! I wonder what 5 will be like?
- gallagherFTW, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4lol almost as bad as Doom 3 with the unbaptized ones. oh god, shooting babies is a traumatizing experience
- blamethesun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Don't. Open. That. Door!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Stomping babies on Parasite Eve?
- KillerLettuce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was awesome. I kinda wish they added a paranormal element to RE4. Either way RE4 was one of the best game to come out last generation.
- Nerevar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For some reason the video isn't playing for me. Youtube link?
- convictravers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone played The Suffering(first one not ties that bind) Now that was a seriouslydisturbing game with the most originalbeasties ever! Plus a pretty tight story, shame the sequel was *****!!!
- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They should have added this as a replay option when you finish the game
- Naugors, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow, i'm so glad they changed the camera. That's the one thing that put me off RE games before 4, although they are still fun to play.
- crimsonstare, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Damn man, that definatly should have been in the game. The whole 'non-zombie' thing didn't quite work for me. BTW, was it just me or did that have a slight Silent Hill vibe?
- smoothlou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm STILL amazed that the GameCube could run graphics that gorgeous and detailed. How long do we have to wait for graphics this good on the Wii?
- Guagloves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty creepy but im glad they went with a more fast-paced action game in the end.
Those knights were in the final version if u do recall except some of them chased you around. - rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1should of been an unlockable mini extra game like they did with all the others, would'nt of hurt.
- mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The whole complaint about the camera scheme was that it was *never* used well. It was nigh-impossible. Imagine fighting a guy who's just out of camera range, so your char is standing at the screen shooting at, um, something. See where this is going? It may have been 'atmospheric', but since when did that come before 'usable'?
- mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't RE4 different *because* people were tired of the poor cameras, cheap scares, and bad aiming?
- borb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2While this does look really creepy, it doesnt even look or feel like Res 4. It's like a totally different game. The graphics are MUCH better, even the camera angles were different (as mentioned above). However, while I do think that Res 4 is one of the best of the best, especially as far as the gcube goes, I do think it needed more horror. 4 was more intense than it was scary.
- altinnovation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Resident Evil originally got me with they creepy zombies in an abandoned city or underground laboratory, but this new concept of robotic dolls with knives or a dude with a machete isn't as creepy anymore. The franchise has totally changed, and while constant zombie killing gets boring I think they could have invented something better than what I saw in the video.
