- catylist, on 11/07/2007, -14/+79homebrew on a psp makes it a million times better
- jadenton, on 11/08/2007, -18/+55The PSP is designed to play exactly the same types of games as the PS2. Problem is, if I want to play PS2 games I want a full tv screen and a proper controller. The DS is meant to play DS type games. As a result, its games are unique, and PSP games are just too similar to regular console games.
- OhFrak, on 11/07/2007, -8/+43The amount of great games on the PSP is amazing when you look at threads like this one:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16135 ...
When you have both a PSP and a PS3 it gets even better. You can download PS1 games from the PSN store to your PS3 and play them on your PSP - transfering the saves back and forth. Play a PS1 game at night on your PS3, transfer your save to PSP that you play at lunch or on the train on the way to or from work, transfer the save back when you get home and continue playing at night on your PS3.
Remotely access your PS3 from anywhere in the world that has WiFi, read about new games, demos, movies, etc showing up on the PSN store, just use your PSP to login to the PSN PS3 store and queue all your downloads to be ready for when you get home.
With the easily and cheaply upgradeable PS3 harddrives plus the very cool DLNA abilities to stream music and movies from any PC in your home to your PS3 you can have access to your entire media library anywhere in the world on your PSP as long as you have an active Net connection.
And Sony is constantly updating the firmware for both the PS3 and PSP to add and update new features every month. - thebellmaster1x, on 11/07/2007, -12/+41In what way is the DS "low-end"? Serious question.
- pxa270, on 11/07/2007, -4/+32The PSP has the unfortunate reputation that there are very few good games, while the DS has plenty. But if you look at Metacritic, you'll see that the PSP has 53 games with a rating of 80 or higher versus 44 for the DS. Moving the bar higher, 16 PSP games rated 85 or higher versus 20 for the DS. So I would say that the difference is pretty small

http://www.metacritic.com/games/ds/scores/ - caddyalan, on 11/07/2007, -6/+34There has been some high-profile software on the PSP recently. Will it sell? I have no idea.
- coheedcollapse, on 11/07/2007, -3/+30Eh. My favorite part about the PSP is its ability to let me take a game that'd usually be on the console with me wherever I go. I've never had control problems with the PSP, so it's not like they're poorly designed or anything.
I enjoy both consoles in their own way. If I want some stylus action, I bring out the DS, if I want to play my vintage games (emulators+popstation), watch some movies, or play some PSP games, I bring my PSP.
Personally, I prefer my PSP, but that's just me. - inactive, on 11/08/2007, -6/+31Its personal opinion, idiot
- coheedcollapse, on 11/07/2007, -1/+22He's probably talking about the hardware, not the gameplay value. It's low-end because compared to the PSP's PS2 level graphics, the DS's N64-level graphics aren't anything to be envious about. Not saying the games suck, just trying to explain what he might've meant.
- solesoul, on 11/07/2007, -14/+34I think someone has confused "redesign" with "comeback."
- thebellmaster1x, on 11/07/2007, -1/+19I wish they would make a real-life FPS. Oh, wait, they already have that. It's called actually murdering someone.
See how applying a stupid ad hoc argument to other things shows its flaws? - coheedcollapse, on 11/07/2007, -2/+20To be fair, homebrew can be done on the DS as well, although it's far less developed and it costs more to enable.
- FriedTurkey, on 11/07/2007, -3/+20I just got a slim PSP. I do mostly handheld gaming as a frequent traveller and the PSP is a nice change of pace from playing the DS for last 4 years. It's good to have a good driving game that isn't Mario Kart. The game library isn't huge but it is worth it for $200 and watching movies on it is nice. I am ready for mobile God of War.
Comparing it to the DS is like apples and oranges. I guess people feel they need to compare because they get off on fighting for different corporations. - gamerzworld, on 11/07/2007, -0/+17How many times has Mario and Zelda IP been remade again?
- ocharry, on 11/07/2007, -0/+17Actually they're trying to stop homebrew mainly because of piracy. There will be less and less developers willing to produce games on a system that can run pirated games so easily.
- Brick86, on 11/07/2007, -5/+21The PSP without homebrew might as well be an iPhone without it being jailbroken.
- YuriSakazaki, on 11/07/2007, -3/+19Do any of the people bashing the PSP actually own one? It seems like everyone who owns both really enjoy both devices. I personally use my PSP more than my DS because I bring it with me in my car as an MP3 player, and listen to music at work with it as well. There's also a ton of great games on it, like Jeanne D'Arc and MGS: Portable Ops. Those two games are well worth buying a PSP for, MGS: Portable Ops is the best handheld game I've ever played.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -6/+19Becoming? PSP has been great for years now
- h4mx0r, on 11/07/2007, -2/+15I'm sorry, I should have said something like "wanting a change". Of course the DS library isn't running dry, I apologize if I sounded like I was bashing the DS. I just worded it wrong.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -8/+20PSP has a 4.3 inch screen. not 2.
While DS gets games they Wouldn't do on other consoles, PSP gets games they Couldn't do on other handhelds. And that's why I love it over the DS - Asianwaste, on 11/07/2007, -2/+13A portable SNES/Mame/NES/Gensis/Turbographics/PSX/DivX/MP3 player? Hell yea!
PSP's games may be lacking but it's hardware is badass! - inactive, on 11/07/2007, -23/+34PSP is still my favourite handheld video playing device by miles, even though I've owned both an iPod Video and an iPhone.
All of my content is 16:9 so I love that the PSP is the same. Videos look absolutely awesome.
I don't know why it gets so much hating for games too, there are hundreds and certainly loads of AAA caliber. I love Burnout and GTA on PSP, along with Wipeout. What fantastic games. What can DS offer? Brain training and stupid dog handling? Give me a break! - YuriSakazaki, on 11/07/2007, -4/+15It's cheaper with many less features and horsepower. The Wii is a lower-end console as well, compared to the 360 and PS3, not saying that it's any worse, it's just cheaper and not as powerful, which is undeniably true.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -2/+13Prepare to be buried for exposing the truth. Digg loves the DS.
- NuclearFriend, on 11/07/2007, -3/+13I have been a long-time DS gamer and get my fill of roughly two hours a day (I commute to work daily) of portable gaming. But just recently I have bought a PSP for something a bit different as well as the multitude of decent titles available. Also for listening to music/watching video I think he PSP will offer a better experience.
- Dan2552, on 11/08/2007, -3/+12IMO, Ocarina of Time was great for it's time, and I do think it was one of the best games ever. But I must admit I had a hell of a lot more FUN when playing Phantom Hourglass (the main purpose of games surely is the fun factor, is it not?). Ocarina is revolutionary, Phantom Hourglass is the modern high standard. Besides, I have OOT and Master Quest on gamecube cd, which I can play on my wii.
- mr_bako2, on 11/07/2007, -3/+12I personally chose the PSP myself, although i have no problem with nintendo, i was your typical consumer who liked the music/videos/pictures/internet capabilities. However i soon began to regret that decision when the thing was rotting in a drawyer (although there are some moderately fun games)...
However, when i discovered the massive homebrew scene for the PSP and exactly what the little thing was capable of, I was amazed, emulation of tons of good consoles, music during gameplay, satelite radio, many many fun (but very simple) homebrew games, Not to mention the ability to play any old PS1 ISO without having to purchase them from the sony marketplace... All of these things combined to make my PSP a hell of a little device, not to mention custom themes make it look nice too. And if you wanted (i have the old fat PSP) you could get the new "PSP Slim" and it has TV output which is extreeeemely cool.
With Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops+ coming out in a week, it will get even better. - thatsmyaibo, on 11/07/2007, -3/+12I like my DS more, but there has definitely been some great software recently on the PSP. I have been eating up time between classes in college with Final Fantasy Tactics. Was a great game on the PS and transfers nicely to the handheld.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -7/+16Being a touch screen doesn't make the screen better. Being bigger and brighter (PSP) makes it better
As for innovation, palm pilots, tapwave zodiacs, and many other portable game systems have had touch screens for years. The DS is not innovative. - omyard, on 11/10/2007, -0/+9I don't believe that the PSP will ever catch the DS, but it has done an excellent job of not getting destroyed by the DS. It's done what no other handheld has been able to do against Nintendo's and that's gain and maintain it's marketshare. Everyone else has come in gone within a few years and the PSP keeps gaining steam.
- staticneuron, on 11/07/2007, -2/+11I wouldn't call the DS design low end but you can knock the original PSP but the PSP slime is awesomeness. It actually fits comfertable in the pockets and the memory and loading boost were greatly needed. Innovation is a token word now thrown about. What only matters is what you have fun on and i have fun on the PSP more than the DS. Of course this is purely based on subjective tastes in games.
- tallonx, on 11/07/2007, -2/+10... Seriously?? Really?
I hate to break it to you, but everything he said, wether he's a sony rep or a chipmunk is true. . . One of the great parts of the PSP is its use with the PS3. . . He's right. It's awesome to access your media from anywhere in the world. It's awesome to play games on multiple mediums, It's awesome to control your PS3 while on the train home.
And considering there's 2 whole versions out right now, I think you can pick for yourself. Mk? Mk. - Asianwaste, on 11/07/2007, -4/+12PSP emulation. That's really all I give a damn about. Once Gamestop sells them for under $100, I'm buying one.
- h4mx0r, on 11/07/2007, -13/+21I'd also like to mention that while one can consider the DS to have more great games than the PSP (on your point of view of course), now would be a great time to at the very least, try out the PSP. If the DS library is running dry on you, four years of PSP development has definitely given us some goodies, so don't ignore the PSP, even if you despise Sony in general.
- tallonx, on 11/07/2007, -0/+8The PSP has some pretty fantastic games... Not going to lie on this one.. Loco Roco, MG, Final Fantasy. It's pretty awesome.
The DS has some great games too! I love zelda, hard core. But they ARE apple and oranges. The PSP is a multi-function device, designed to do more than just play games. The DS is just games. Hate the PSP or love the DS all you want, the two things are fundamentally similar, in that they play games, but other than that, they have very few similarities. - staticneuron, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7Hmmmm, no rehash titles on the DS huh....... I guess PSP owners cannot wrap ther mind around gret new IP like advanced wars, Super mario brothers, pokeman, starfox, metroid, castlevania, kirby, zelda, final fantasy, tony hawk..... Yeah those PSP owners must be crazy huh.
- Okari, on 11/07/2007, -1/+8Final Fantasy is also on the PSP. This summer they got remakes of the first two.
- crazyhorse13, on 11/07/2007, -1/+8Really, they shouldn't even be compared to each other. Comparing a DS to a PSP is like comparing a Wii to a PS2. Yes, they are technically in competing markets, but they cater to different interests. And its completely logical to own both, if you want.
- chad78, on 11/07/2007, -2/+9A "bulky device"? My R4DS is the same size as a DS game. You slide it in the slot, and you never know its there. Same goes for my EZFlash V which goes into my Slot 2. It is flush with my DS Lite. No bulk. The footprint is identical to an empty DS Lite. And with all the part in there, it looks like you've got a game in it and a slot 2 cover, or the ram card for the DS Browser. There be no bulk here. For all that I got, I spent less than $100 - and I can play all kinds of homebrew. Even surf the web with DSOrganize, listen to music with Moonshell or that iPod Clone thing that I don't know the name of, and play homebrew games galore. I've done actual work on my DS Lite at a coffee shop. It's better than hauling my laptop around! (Which is why I want a Nokia N810 or an EEE PC - even my MacBook is too big these days!)
- jeremymccurdy, on 11/08/2007, -1/+8All you need is a flashcart and a microSD card, then you can use your DS as a movie/mp3 player, play roms from the SNES and back(N64 is a no go). It's not as far ahead as PSP homebrew, but it is still pretty good.
- stapuft, on 11/08/2007, -1/+8true that is "all you need" but that fact alone makes it a terrible thing to do you can do homebrew on the psp pretty much out of the box, no extra equiptment needed (note im talking about the better psp bundles that come with memory sticks of the 1/2 gig variaty)
and also to buy that stuff for the ds puts it a at least $50 more that the psp if not more and why pay more for less? am i right - inactive, on 11/07/2007, -1/+8When you bought your iPod or your iPhone, you paid for the memory inside. When you buy a PSP you get the option of how much memory to add and unlimited expandability.
- Okari, on 11/07/2007, -1/+7Kinda like how iTunes songs are completely useless on other players?
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -3/+91) Yes it is comfortable to hold
2) There are PS1-style grips for it - 0two, on 11/08/2007, -1/+7I'm no PSP fanboy, but the reason that there wasn't a complete overhaul is because they didn't screw up the original one. The first DS looked ugly, was too big and the screens weren't bright enough. The PSP was a good size (taking into account the screen), looked good, and had a nice screen. The DS badly needed a redesign, the PSP did not.
- staticneuron, on 11/07/2007, -3/+9Every time I hear that, it boggles my mind. I honestly don't believe you played a PSP. The gameplay mechanics are similar (button placement) but because of the PSP's memory and the fact that they assume you are on the go the levels in most games such as Dynasty warriors, monster hunter, and various others are broken up into smaller parts. New elements are introduced in many games to throw a twist on the mechanics. MGS: PO.... the way you control snake is similar but the level design, movement about map, soldier recruting and even management of equipment is completely different. Even in games I thought were direct ports they have added features (Final fantasy tactics) or completely reworkd stages ( gitaroo man). I have seen this way to often and I am calling you out on a lie.
- silverwolfe, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5You owe it to yourself to try Syphon Filter.
- staticneuron, on 11/07/2007, -5/+10I can, loco roco, lumines, jeanne d arc, MGS: portable ops, Final Fantasy tactics, Acecombat, Killzone, Syphon filter, Street fighter alpha max 3, Monster hunter, Aedis eclipse, gurumin, daxter, ratchet and clank... I can go on and on. I understand preferance but to bash the PSP based off of complete ignorance about its titles is just stupid.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/08/2007, -2/+7homebrew. There's N64 emulators (I personally havent found a good one). I have Link To The Past on my PSP right now.
- KeyLimePie, on 11/07/2007, -2/+7The PSP is everything you'd ever expect from a company making a portable console so in that respect, it really should be more popular. It's just unfortunate that it's competing with a platform that has Pokémon.
