- kag9000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Shouting shiver-me-timbers, roaming the southern seas in a ship with a beard you could lose a badger in, is just too tempting for me.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The Warhammer games is supposed to be a more manly fantasy game. Previews say you can wear the skulls of slain opponents on your armor. The dwarves have bigger beards. In typical Warhammer fashion, everyone's either drunk, corrupt, evil, or bloodthirsty. I'm not a Warhammer tabletop gamer, but I think the fantasy and lore around that game is awesome.

You can't be WoW in quantity, but you can sure beat it in quality. - Klitzy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Guild Wars all the way....Free subscription.......Yes......Free

It's Paul Barnett talking about WAR. Paul completely sold me on Warhammer with this video. - Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Xfire isn't a good source at all to check for popularity. It does not represent a random sample from the gamer population.
- Skas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9No digg due to the lack of Vanguard, Darkfall, and ArchLord. Nothing can really challenge WoW, but then again most of the MMOs coming out soon aren't designed to directly compete with WoW.
World of Warcraft is geared towards everyone; whereas most of the newer games are niche games. Vanguard is looking for hardcore gamers, Warhammer is trying to pick up the PvP crowd, etc. - frayedknot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm pretty excited about this game:

- Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7At the leipzig booth the guys from Warhammer already mentioned they aren't really aiming for the casuals.
The others don't look as promising. I don't think any of them will be able to take a big piece from Blizzard's cake.
As for an MMO that got looked over, I'd say Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - squeakypants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Stargate Worlds only a "best of the rest"? And what about Huxley? No digg.
- tolbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They forgot hero's journey:

The company has been at it since 1988 with text-based games. Creators of Gemstone III (now IV) and Dragonrealms, two of the most largly popular online games in the early to mid 1990s. Lets hope their success translates from text to video.
Hero's Journey impressed many at E3 2005 and continued to build on that at E3 2006. Keep your eye on this. - tolbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You've obviously never seen Lineage 2. Near naked Dark Elf's with more cleavage than any man can handle, running across the landscape with 45 degree angle bent-forward backs.
It's scary...it's no wonder the game is so big in asia. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Really looking forward to LOTROL
- Durinthal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not looking for a game to challenge WoW, as I honestly don't like a lot of the systems in it and any direct competitor will just be more of the same.
A game I'm interested in is called Genesis.. entirely player-driven (players have to build houses and towns themselves), dynamic environment (you can hollow out a mountain and build a town inside it if you want; other possible locations would be large trees or even underwater). It's early on in development but the engine itself already looks great.
http://playgenesis.com - toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i am looking forward to huxley, a mmofps
i think this may apeal to a different community, but i also think it was overlooked - cquilliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The game isn't free, they just don't charge a fee for you to play the game that you purchased. Which, if you think about it, is quite rediculus. The game itself is great, but i've never played WoW so I can't compare the two, all I know is that I play, and I have fun, as do many others.
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Pirates and Star Trek look particularly interesting to me. Something fresh there.
- pyewackett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The article is inaccurate, or at least unnecessarily generalised. It's not "loathed only by those whose lives it has ripped away". I loathe it, and it certainly hasn't ripped my life away. I must be in some tiny minority of people who think the game itself is a load of crap. Cutesy, boring, puerile and horrible to look at. The only MMORPG I have played that I could be bothered to persevere with (and I've played a great many) was EQ2, but interest in that only comes in fits and starts. The genre itself really needs a bit of diversity, not so much in terms of the worlds available to play in, but rather to cater to a more mature mindset, rather than the lowest common denominator. I want an online world that doesn't have to compromise its purpose to accommodate *****, or infants.
- eskay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I suspect Xfire has a mostly North American user base, while L2's is mostly Korean.
- flickmaster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8gmillerd: Most games don't have addons because their interfaces don't blow like World of Warcraft's and thus they do not need addons.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Pirates game looks amazing.
'When Joe Bloggs sits down to play an MMORPG for the first time the last thing he wants is the daunting prospect of feeling left out, when everyone around him has their own, pimped out custom pirate battleships.'
Ummm, I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty sure everyone would want to make their own pirate ship, and will at least attempt to use the dev kit. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow way to mention the most popular and publicized, thats some awesome journalism.
They could have mentioned Knight Online or Guild Wars; while they may not reach the array of people WOW has, they're decent and fun in their own right.
Who cares if it 'beats' WOW's numbers as long as its better? A lot of noobs play WOW anyway.. thats a reason I quit. - drek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Guild Wars chapters (ie, expansions) are self-contained games, and released six monthes apart. That means arena.net gets two times a year to do things right and usurp WoW. I don't think it'll happen, but GW is WoW's only real competition.
Funny thing: Jeff Strain, producer of Guild Wars, started the WoW project. The lead designer of Guild Wars was the lead designer of Starcraft. GW's server model was created by the orginal battle.net team. Guild Wars is practically a Blizzard game, yet gets bashed by Blizzard fanboys constantly.
I don't think even half of them have even tried Guild Wars. The PvE might be a little boring, but Guild Wars absolutely destroys WoW in th PvP department. If Chapter 3 (or 4 or 5 or whatever) ends up with a better PvE game, I could see Guild Wars at least gaining ground on WoW -- maybe picking up casual gamers who are sick of the equipment grind of the WoW raid instances. - pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Two of the guys in my gaming guild play both GW and WoW, and both like GW a little better. Both games obviously have their strengths and weakness. Which one is better for you likely depends on your style and amount of gameplay. I haven't played WoW, but as a casual gamer (once or twice a week), I love GW. I especially like the no subscription model they use, the environment graphics are beautiful (char graphics could use some work though), and I get the sense that the developers really understand gamers.
It's a great game. - Sheaf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You might want to actually provide accurate information. Age of Conan is designed around multiplayer action, not single player. Blizzard blatantly stole from the Warhammer lore (and admit it), so who wants to be who?
And finally, Tabula Rasa is being designed primarily for the computer. - VPurpmalkV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Pirates and Warhammer have my votes. When Warhammer is released my WoW account will be for sail. Should be able to pay for a new video card upgrade by then. LoL
- cogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had signed up for beta testing for LotR Online. Not that I have a burning desire to be a hobbit or a Legolas clone, I'd just like to walk around in Tolkien's world and see how the game designers potray it.
However, I'm a bit annoyed at the journal excerpts from the alpha testers that are posted on the site. http://lotro.turbine.com/
"Today was my first day testing LOTRO and I just can't believe how much fun I'm having!"
You've got to be kidding me... marketing BS... - isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the star trek game looks pretty cool.
- tolbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would throw caution to the wind with anything Turbine Inc., creators of the Asheron's Call Series and DDO, puts out. Asheron's Call 2 was a failure from the start and DDO was terribly underwhelming.
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Better game then those MMOs.
- AW4L, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WoW nerds are too hooked on their pixel weapons or whatever to leave the game. Too much money and dedication to just leave.
- Mtap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh Man i cant wait untill tabula rasa comes out, and Spore.
- venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, because WoW was so very innovative and unique...
/sarcasm (for those who have broken sarcasm detectors) - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If they add ninjas as the opposing faction in the pirate MMO, then WoW would be on a downward spiral from then on.
- DiggidtyDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah it's a cool idea but will ever become a reality?
- westwind429, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I played UO back in the day, but kicked the MMO addiction for now...Darkfall is the only upcoming one that may suck me back in. Like the other (surprisingly few :/ ) who mentioned it...no Darkfall, no digg.
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Where is Vanguard on the list? It will more than likely blow WoW out of the water when it is released.
I'm in the small minority with pyewackett above that thinks WoW is a load of crap. I did however formerly play FFXI, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I guess that's why I'm in the small minority - WoW is too easy!
(for those who are interested: Vanguard's website is http://www.vanguardsoh.com/)"
That is just what I was thinking, but as I look at it all those games are more or less clones of each other. Please not the simmilaritys between Warhammer Online, LOTRO, and WoW. - poshsuicide, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7None of those will actually be a challenge to WoW. Age of Conan certainly looks awesome, and I will be playing it, but I doubt it will reach a wide enough audience. Poeple like playing elfs! Warhammer Online will also do well, considering the vast amount of back story, and fans the entire series has as a whole. The pirate game stands no chance. A niche market game will not be able to acquire numbers remotely close to 7 million. No comment on the LOTR game nor the Halo in an MMO game.
- lunartech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The MMO's what? Oh, it's just another unnecessary apostrophe.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Hellgate: London is an action-RPG with a fully developed singleplayer mode and multiple online modes. Our online modes vary, too. Some will be comparable to Diablo (your typical 2 to 32-player instanced experience or whatever), while another may include more MMO-like functionality and will thus be comparable to those sorts of games (Guild Wars and whatnot).
We will definitely have some form of free online multiplayer. However, we have not yet figured out how we're going to fund the ongoing operation of our MMO-like game... It could conceivably cost something. It could revolve around micro-purchases. It could focus on expansions and episodic content. It could be anything."
now, calm down - psg188, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2www.mythicwars.com/mythos/default.asp?id=5480
make an account, its a really fun game - bchang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What about the Shenmue MMORPG. Man my lucky hit is so high.
- caliyankee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Conan game looks really interesting. It's not mentioned in TFA, but the game is single player and offline until you reach lvl 20 (estimated around 2-3 weeks of play time). Combine that with the mature themes like decapitation and lots of blood, and it just may keep the griefers and leet-kiddies away. I would pay double my WOW subscription if it was required 18+ years old to play.
- gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I would be excited if EQ1 graphics where exciting. I cannot look at that for hours. Even if WoW is a too cartoony for some, its consistent and immersive.
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was all prepared to bitch about Warhammer Age of Reckoning not being on the list. Up until this last E3 WAR had been overlooked because of the failure that was the previous incarnation of Warhammer Online. I've been following the game's progress since that first project and I'm glad that one died. With Mythic's RvR system and the Warhammer fantasy setting, this second project is gonna rock.
- isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3or its coming out in a few months and called: Burning Crusade...
- tolbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3umm...Eve Online has been out years longer than WoW. I don't see your point.
