- nicko68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36"...he was laid off from Boeing on the same day he and his wife signed the papers to purchase their first home. This last disappointment awakened something in Wiebe. He’d had enough, and he now had the free time to do something about it. He needed to prove to himself that he could achieve something significant. He chose Donkey Kong.
In his bid to unseat Billy Mitchell from the Donkey Kong throne, Wiebe installs a Donkey Kong machine in his garage and gets to work."
That man has one of the most understanding wives on the planet.
Ok honey, I know I just lost my job and we have a huge mortgage, but I now know what I want to do with my life. - steakfry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Damn, this is one of the better movie reviews I've ever read. I really want to see this now!
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The title kinda reminds me off the Sandlot...
"The sultan of swat!"
"The king of crash!"
"The colossus of clout!"
"The colossus of clout!"... - Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14This guy is also famous for playing the perfect Pacman game. Playing through the entire game without losing a single life.
- empressofmetal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I really want to see this movie now too! I had a serious Donkey Kong career way back when. I could totally relate to these guys in the movie. I think I'm not too far behind in obsessiveness, though I'm not cutthroat like those dudes!
- BeardedTacoFish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10According to the Twin Galaxies website, Wiebe is now the champion.

In an absolutely classic scene, Wiebe manages to beat Mitchell’s score by a substantial margin, all while his young son screams at him to “stop playing Donkey Kong and wipe my butt!”
ROFL - evilregis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I ownt Congo Bongo, C=64. I remember that game very fondly. I just went and looked up some screenshots from it and it's amazing how your mind blocks how bad the game looked. I mean it's bad. But I don't remember it as such.
I think I might have to scour my parents house this weekend for my old C=64. - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I've seen the movie. Its great - I wish I could buy the DVD already. I dont know if they're going to release the documentary or make a full feature out of it (actors who play the roles of the guys, dramitization, etc). Wiebe is the classic nice, naive guy who, if he didnt have bad luck wouldnt have any luck at all.
It is an excellent movie, not only is it shot and put together very well, I've found from talking to my friend that even people who don't care about video games find themselves wrapped up in the movie and rooting for Wiebe. Its a wonderful story. - h3ndrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Dugg for the film's creative name alone.
- buba447, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Way to ruin the ending of the movie for me.
Yeesh! Spoiler alert!

What do you mean by corrupt... like Underworld, Sopranos-type corrupt? or like bad bits & bytes-type corrupt? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Back in my 80s arcade days I could roll over any number of games and play as long as my endurance allowed: Q*bert, Defender, Robotron, Xevious.
Q*bert still gives me nightmares.
I also knew a couple guys that were so good at Donkey Kong that they used to sit on stools in the arcade and play with their feet. They also use to play Joust with their feet. 0.o
And are high scores even relevant for these old arcade games? Typically you could play them until you passed out. Or on Robotron for example the score actually rolled over. I remember trying to shoot that last grunt many times trying to get the maximum score that can be displayed as the high score. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Billy Mitchell - This guy's a hot-sauce salesman and totally hilarious:

This movie might end up being another "American Movie" - whoatemytuna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wiebe is the current champion with 1,049,100 points. Here's a recap of the winning game http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=19&id=1433.
- NYC10004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That's the first movie review that's made me want to see a movie i've never heard of prior.
Going to check it out for sure. - ZachtheKnife, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This guy Billy Mitchell was featured on an MTV special on gaming sometime back and holy *****... what a joker! As I recall, after playing a perfect game of Pacman in front of the camera he said something to the extent of "i'm working on a gaming feat that is going to shock the world." He refused to even hint at what this feat might be, making it very obvious to the viewing audience that, in fact, he had nothing planned.
- dslemons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I saw this at the Atlanta Film Festival a few weeks back. This is an amazing doc! It was my favorite of 15 features I saw.
- ZorboMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I remember that. This guy is one of the funniest/cheesiest dudes I've ever seen. He thinks he's some kind of a rock star.
Also, this movie sounds hilarious and awesome. I love that Billy Mitchell has a nemesis. - blackbeltbones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I was a black belt in Yie Ar Kung-Fu. Commodore 64 thug 4 life! ;)

- blackbeltbones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you really want me to show my age I'll start talking about text-based games like Pirate's Cove on the TRS-80. :P
- JustinSane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Twin Galaxies is corrupt. If you want to learn more check out this interview All Games Interactive did with the founder of Twin Galaxies and Mr. Awesome
http://www.allgames.com/radio.asp?show=agi&ep=246A - sdwilly22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This reminds me of the movie King Pin but with real people and arcade games instead of bowling.
- imamessy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And no Amish, which is disappointing.
- empressofmetal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ms. Pacman, for sure.

Corrupt as in they only put scores up for those who fit into their "club". I'm telling you if you listen to that podcast I linked you will see. They robbed Mr. Awesome of his world record on Missile Command. - jeepnut24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Asteroids was my game of choice...
- consumption, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4anyone know where to get this movie?
- dslemons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FTA it opens in theaters in August.
- allgamesradio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This movie is EPIC, a fantastic film that transcends gaming. We talked to Mr Awesome Roy Shildt the Missile Command record holder on our show yesterday. He is in the movie and was the reason Steve Wiebe's first score over a million was not accepted. Twin Galaxies is shady IMO. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AllGamesInteractive/~3/122205921/060407EDIT.mp3
- nocre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love playing Bubble Bobble and The Tower of Druaga.
- SanTe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There was an arcade kung fu game called "Kicker" that was very similar to "Yie Ar Kung Fu" except you didn't fight one opponent you fought a dozen or so at a time, all the while jumping between levels on pagodas, etc. The game was in my hometown bowling alley and I played it occasionally, never scoring more than 50,000 or so points. But then one day while playing I sensed something was happening and I went into some kind of zone. I ended up playing on one quarter for over two hours, busting 700,000 points. It was weird, because it wasn't like I built up to it and gradually got better and scored higher and higher. It was literally: never more than ~50,000 points and then one day, *boom*: 700,000+. Strangely, I never played the game again after that.
- piper999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Defender for me.
For a while I was ranked #1 on the Xbox 360 leaderboard for the Xbox Live Arcade release of this game. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21. 1,049,100 Steve J Wiebe 03/23/2007
2. 1,047,200 Billy L Mitchell 01/31/2006 - digmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@blackbeltbones
If you really want me to show my age I'll start talking about text-based games like Pirate's Cove on the TRS-80. :P
I still have my TRS-80 Model 1 (Level 2 Basic, 16k) and the cassette recorder. The machine still works! thought the tape deck died some time back. Which is too bad, because I have the urge to play a few Big-5 games :-)
G++ - acex23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2super smash brothers for the 64... We were legends.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K7wpatALDQ - real, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Friday at the arc light in Los Angeles if you are interested.
That would be Aug. 17th 2007 - SanTe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Holy *****. Out of curiousity I just checked Twin Galaxies' scoreboard for Kicker:
http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=22&pi=46&gi=1640&vi=10475
The current world record of 852,600 was set only last August (2006). Had I had the foresight to videotape my 700,000+ game back in the day I apparently would have held the official world record for about 18 years!
The MAME settings he used match the arcade cabinet default settings. Of course I just tracked down the ROM and the game is every bit as fun as I remembered it. I'm trying reeeeally hard not to get sucked back into it but part of me wonders if I could top 852,600... >:) - krunk4ever, on 10/26/2007, -0/+1download the HD trailer here:
http://www.hd-trailers.net/preview.php?id=king_of_ ... - SanTe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"I dont know if they're going to release the documentary or make a full feature out of it (actors who play the roles of the guys, dramitization, etc)."
Both. I saw it today at the Seattle International Film Festival and the director did a Q&A afterwards. He confirmed the documentary "The King of Kong" will get a general theatrical release courtesy of New Line Cinema on August 17, 2007. (Watch for it and go see it if at all possible; it's great!) He also said that he has signed on to make a feature film version of the story with actors, but he did not give an expected release date or title for that.
Oh, and Steve Wiebe and his family were there! They got called up on stage for the rest of the Q&A and answered a few questions. It wasn't exactly out of his way to be there since he lives over the water in Redmond, but it was very cool to be able to cheer a hometown hero in person! - guitarh3ro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The movie looks awesome, I really want to see it. I just read on Yahoo movies that it comes out in select theaters August 17th.
- staffrocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I got King Kong in the trunk.
- GeddyRulz, on 06/09/2009, -0/+0I loved the classic 80s arcade games and love documentaries; naturally, I loved this one. I rented it, but am on my third viewing in three days and have already watched all the bonus footage.
My impulse is to really really hate the crap out of Billy Mitchell, who seems to personify everything I hate, but I've since read rebuttals from him and Walter Day, who've convinced me that the filmmakers skewed things to make Billy look worse than he is. This they did by NOT SHOWING everything that happened. There's no denying, though, that Billy Mitchell is an over-the-top character, an arrogant, self-centered prick who sees himself as a God. The filmmakers couldn't have faked THAT; that's who he is. But he was actually kinder to Steve Wiebe than we see in the movie, and he had reasons not to face Wiebe head-to-head in competition. Do some reading 'round the Net before completely judging Mr. Mullethead. -
