Funny, funny *****. - Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Link always was a bit girly.
- rossmcd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Here are some other old nintendo commercials. They're not particularly funny, just a trip down memory lane...
NES system (space station) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJWYGGH1jqs
Nintendo CEREAL! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61LZe8cTn6s

Dragon Warrior - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDLfm4nybvc
Tetris - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZV9IlTJcIg
Mike Tyson's Punch Out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1U0rHj5_h4 - T3mpl3t0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I may be being childish, but for the first 3 seconds of the Bayou Billy advert, doesn't it look like he's playing with his own "entertainment system"?
- miggz06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I especially like how Link and Zelda were both played by Japanese women;)
- cardyology, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Is "Doki Doki Panic" the same game as super mario bros 2? They look the same.
- logicbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6He's ... "wrestling the gator."
- YumYumKittyLoaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ok, anyone see something odd at the end of the german Dr. mario commercial? Is he just fiddling oddly with that thermometer around his back or is he taking his temperature rectally and the camera caught mario examining himself?
- Xageroth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Considering Link got his name because he's the "link" between the player and the game I guess it was originally intended to be a bit androgynous.
- droversoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doki_Doki_Panic#Remakes
- TheHappyRobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Japanese Link was strangely hot... I do really like the American kids playing Zelda, especially the tag line "your parents help you hook it up!".
- Nooze2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yep. Nintendo thought that Super Mario Bros. 2 that they had in Japan would be too difficult for North American audiences, so they took Doki Doki Panic, changed the sprites and artwork a bit, and rebranded it as Super Mario Bros. 2 over here. Eventually they would release the Japanese SMB2 over here in Super Mario Allstars as SMB: The Lost Levels.
- inquebiss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4LQTM (laughing quietly to myself)
- rossmcd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Man oh man, I remember the TMNT fever. Pizza Hut had ninja turtle commercials and even released a ninja turtle cassette tape that you could get at pizza huts.
- Br0wn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ya thats when hip hop was getting really popular and everyone tried doing it. ex. Ron Jeremy, Rodney Dangerfield,...Vanilla Ice...
- DatoeDakari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3By far, the coolest one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilVYjS6yjTE&eurl= - inquebiss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it'll leave skidmarks on your soul!
- N00F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My all time favorite video game commercial was the one for Battle Tanx, with the fluffy bear.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c4tGcJoq0s - osc1882, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love that, that one ad was for the disk system. It made me happy.
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ha ha ha, this one HAS to be the cheesiest.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ApypJw-JAI&eurl= - walkerj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...of other mediums. Video...
media - liquidcola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Konami NEEEEDS to make a Bayou Billy game for the Wii... Thought about that the second the wii came out. Think about it... all the different game modes with the wiimote? Would be so awesome. Maybe they can even find that dude from the commercial again?
- envy860, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Whoaaah, nice graphics!"
- desistere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That cereal was awful. They forced you to eat half of each type. Now the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cereal... that was the best damn cereal ever!
- Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The Paperboy one is great!
- thundacracka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I watched the first Zelda commercial, I didn't really remember it as a kid, but yet, somehow, I knew all the words. Very weird.
- desistere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And yet, you have to think that advertising has gone up like crazy. Maybe we've just lost the television videogame commercial, but we're surrounded in all sorts of other mediums. Video games have become a niche and television isn't the most effective way to advertise anymore.
- HumanWaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How the ***** did Nintendo sell anything?
- MosaicM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bayou Billy? I hope you saved the receipt... bwoooooo
/props to anyone who knows where that came from! - JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Okay...I'll say it. Bayou Billy was hard as *****.
- dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1(American Paper Boy) = best one imo
LOL @ American Zelda hahaha - ginrummy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see you saw Demetri's new special last night.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It should be noted that Doki Doki Panic was indeed a Miyamoto game, with Koji Kondo doing the music and a good part of the original SMB team also worked on the game. So it's not some random game Nintendo took to make a Mario version, it already had some of Mario's soul in it.
My theory is that Nintendo got a contract to do a game for Fuji TV and decided to take it as an opportunity to create a new engine for future Mario games. When they realized they couldn't release the Japanese SMB2 because it was too hard and graphically too much like the first one, instead of using the new engine to create a brand new Mario game, they transformed Doki Doki Panic into SMB2 US by changing the sprites to Mario characters.
There are other changes to the game, better controls, more frames in animation (using a special chip), some other sprites were redrawn or changed, and some music tracks were "extended" and improved. - altosaxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Xageroth...
+10 for the SAT word - nerdstyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I remember seeing that one awhile ago but it never ceases to be funny.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha i loved that game genie one, i remember that.
- desistere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Seeing all these old commercials makes me realize how little advertising gamemakers have to do nowadays. Back then, you would buy a game based on buzz or commercials or who knows what... Now you just check the internet and known when a game sucks. I'm looking at you NES Ghostbusters!
- rossmcd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Haha, nice. Here's another spoof of the snuggles bear. Anybody remember the old MTV show "The State"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQc9OTli3fw
- mandel15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OMG because some Nintendo characters appear cause otherwise I would think that some of the Japanese ads are talking about hardcore drugs. I have to learn an Asian language....
- christoscamaro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ugh, ever played a game on a Famicom? Friggen controllers have like 3 feet of cord.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1no metroid no digg
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4Whoa, just watched the second English Zelda commercial.
There was rap back then!? How on earth has such a crappy "music" style managed to survive this long? /boggle

What is Digg?
