- Edrick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I can't speak for all of those games, but Rocket Slime is a blast.
- hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Phoenix Wright was a lot of fun (and the sequel comes out in two weeks) but in my opinion, the game was not under appreciated at all. It was in high demand pretty much the whole year and generally recognized as a very unique game for the DS. And technically, it was released in October of 2005. :)
- Atom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Are you kidding me, Contact is an amazing game as is Scourge. Why dont you put down Halo and expand your gaming horizons.
- Furyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hahaha. I laughed out loud, and I wrote the damn thing.
Lost Magic is easily the most debatable game on the list. It's a love it/hate it type game. Personally, I think it's difference from pretty much everything in the market makes up for its numerous flaws. - kid_kansas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What are you talking about? Dragon Quest Rocket Slime and Mega Man are very addicting, great games.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I got AoE DS for Christmas. Definitely goes on the under appreciated list. We only got it here in Ireland in December even though it had been released a lot earlier and nobody seems to know it here. A friend of mine (big AoE and DS fan) had never even heard of it. I've only finished the Joan of Arc campaign, but I can already say it's an unreal game. The battles are brilliant and very strategic (mastering the art of cheap fodder seems to be key!) and all the music and literature and stuff are still there from the PC versions. I honestly can't detract anything from it.
- Ironman11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm one of the few people that actually enjoyed LostMagic. I've beaten the single-player once, and played online for countless hours. It's really a good game to pick up, especially if you can catch a deal on it.
- DelSolMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I actually enjoyed Bomberman Land. It doesn't have the cool graphics style or fast pace action of WarioWare. But it does have a large set of decent mini games strung together on a map that keeps unlocking new sections once you beat certain challenges or find secret items. If you like the mini games in the mutiplayer part of Mario 64 DS or New Super Mario Bros. you might enjoy this title.
- aschocobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3phoenix wright isn't an underrated game. a lot of people have heard of it, lots bought it, and almost everyone says it's good.
edit: never mind, hansamurai beat me to it :) - NoBullet2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would of added Clubhouse games to the list. 35 of the 42 games are playable online. It takes awhile to get a worldwide match going, since it isnt that popular. But having 8 people in a friend room is so damn fun. Pictochatting alone is worth the cost. You can spend a few hours playing and not notice the time fly by.
- aschocobo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Contact is a game that's really funny. a little on the short side, but otherwise very good.
Lost Magic, not so much. i had that game. in spite of what almost every reviewer said about that game, i just couldn't get into it. sold it a few months ago. - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Dragon Quest Rocket Slime is an amazing game. So much fun just collecting crap and then shooting it at the other player.
I've also played Magnetica and thought it was pretty fun, especially the puzzle mode which is basically a turn based version of the main game, which I found a little too frantic. My coworker loves Magnetica though, and he was the one who got me into Rocket Slime. - doshindude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://www.duggmirror.com/gaming_news/The_Five_Most_Under_Appreciated_Nintendo_DS_Games_of_2006
- ryllharu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I stand corrected on both accounts then.
- ryllharu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Phoenix Wright isn't on there? I don't know about anyone else, but I had to spend a fair amount of money to find that one on eBay. It's also one the best games I've ever played.
- LethaLImpuLse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd reccommend any RPG fan to grab Contact while you can. It's an hilarious, quircky, and insanely fun RPG that I spent many hours on. Definetly one of the top games on my DS list.
- laseractive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Phoenix Wright sold well and had several printings so it wasn't under appreciated.
I have every game shown here. Dragon Quest Rocket Slime is the best of the bunch and one of the best games I played last year. I will mention that the GBA version of Scurge is the best version to get and is $10 cheaper. For some reason the graphics are better on the GBA version. I think it was designed for it first and then ported to DS.
Contact looked cool, but I only thought it average and Age of Empires has some major bugs that can brick the cart if you aren't careful. I wasn't a big fan of Lost Magic or Break em All, but I highly recommend Bomberland Touch, Mega Man ZX and even Magnetica if it was cheaper. - echonull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Contact is somewhat derivative of EarthBound, but successfully so. Just so long as you don't try to max out your fishing stat. Grinding to 100% in that game is non-beneficial and WOEFULLY painful. Playing through the game itself, however, is decent in gameplay and exceptional in the conceptual space.
Megaman ZX is IMHO the best Megaman game since Megaman X itself. It's certainly the best of the MegaMan Zero lineage, and of that style of agility-based don't-get-hit precision-twitch gameplay, rather than the oldschool MegaMan precision-clunk gameplay of having to jump from precisely the last pixel of a platform. Just take into account that Normal mode is pretty much training, and Hard mode is the real deal.
To be fair, I haven't gone into Rocket Slime as of yet.... by the sound of things here, I kinda oughta. - mjenkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For anyone that had issues finding Phoenix Wright: It just got re-released and is being stocked at some EB Games and Gamestops. No need to resort to eBay anymore! http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=180090
Looking forward to the new version in a couple of weeks - already have it reserved :) - schoolisdeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that some of these are certainly a blast. I have played all of them (due to the magic of DS flashing) and have to say most of these are under-appreciated.
It's a good list, but I think Dragon Quest and Bomberman are not "under appreciated." Heck, they even won awards as best games of 2006 according to a few sites including IGN (http://bestof.ign.com/2006/ds/1.html). Even Rub Rabbits gets a mention in there as a runner up.
I would say Phoenix Wright deserves a place on that list too. - caddyalan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I purchased Contact, because 1) I hoped it would be compelling, and 2) I figured Atlus might benefit (in order to encourage more offbeat games). It was interesting... but I'm not sure if I like it.
- Wubba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lost Magic was bad because some battles were really tough (first fire boss), but others were cake in comparison.
If they would have kept the difficulty linear it would have been a much better game. - Cyborg771, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Phoenix Wright is underrated, just rare.
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bomberman Land Touch is awful. The singleplayer has nothing to do with the gameplay of bomberman, and is basically a minigame based animal crossing with a horrible story and dialogue. The multiplayer is cool since it's 8 players, but the powerups are extremely limited, with only bomb up, firepower up, and kick. Even Bomberman 93 for Turbographix 16 (and for Wii) has more powerups than that. Hudson has forgotten why people like bomberman games.
Megaman ZX is cool, but it's pretty much another Megaman Zero game. - Cyborg771, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have played lost magic and the one thing I can say is that it is almost as bad at wrecking your DS touch screen as Elite Beat Agents is. I am not saying that it isn't a good game but once you get into the more complicated spells you will be cutting that screen in half trying to hit them all fast enough. And damn is that game hard. I never bothered finishing it but I am sure that I will get around to it some day.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm playing through Rocket Slime as we speak, it is an absolute blast. I've had my eye on a couple of these games, sort of on the fence, might pick one up some time soon, depends how much time/money I'll be spending on the Wii in the next months.
- melkore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I loved Mega Man ZX but Contact became very boring due to the fact that I had to grind to beat any level which was very boring
- TheVirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lost Magic is really hard. Because of that, I never got far. I got too frustrated with some missions that it pretty much ruined the game. DQ:RS is one of the best games on the DS and it does get challenging near the end. Heard mixed opinions on Scurge, though.
- Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The reviewer better have been right, because I just picked up a copy of break 'em all. It was only $15 but still..
- dr00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with scurge, but not sure about the rest of those.
i own lost magic and it WAS really fun... in the first few levels before it becomes somehwat unplayable due to the difficulty.
the main problems lies in the fact that the difficulty came from so many factors: times limits, short life, failed spells, spell meter, and no monster AI--it was very easy to have all of your monsters run in to be slaughtered while trying to tell them to stay where they were.
what's worse is the difficulty for the first few missions is set on extremely easy then jumps to ridiculously difficult.
lost magic had a lot of potential, but it really wouldn't say it's underappreciated. - Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't care for Lost Magic, and I'm not terribly compelled by Breakout or ZumaDS (Magnetica). Aside from that, though, a good list that might bring attention to some titles that didn't get any. Age of Empires, Contact, Scurge: Hive and Rocket Slime were all fun IMO and worth picking up at their probably-budget-by-now price.
- SgtBob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dunno if it's underrated, but Castlevania on the DS was pretty cool.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2you have a point there, most of them don't have more complex gameplay than a lot of flash games. But, it looks like these have some more content than your regular website game.
If these games were only $20 (Magnetica, Break Em All, Bomberman, Rub Rabbits), they would have probably done a lot better in retail - Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Some games in the video game world do go under the radar and sadly miss out on some well earned profit and recognition. These however are under appreciated for a reason. The cost along with how quite mundane and simplistic they are even if fun at first is why they are overlooked. These are games we should have been playing for free on New Grounds.
- Msh3z, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0If only id of heard of any of those games
- CrushThemTorg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0There's a serious factual error in this article: Lost Magic was complete crap.
- ErinIsADrunk, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2other then Rocket Slime and Contact that list sucks, most of those games were overlooked because they're *****.
