- LordofChaosIori, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62This article is terribly incomplete, but what is here, is pretty interesting. Why is Halo on here twice anyways?
- Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48"Dude that article was kick ass"
eh... maybe not so much... What's up with taking final fantasy from 7 - 12 - 13 ???
Also, was it just me or does there not seem to be much improvement from last get to this gen? I mean, on a TV there seems to be a big difference, but looking at these comparisons shows you just how little has changed.
If they really wanted a kick-ass article, they would have taken those franchises all the way back, at the very least displaying an example from each console generation.... - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33Of course you heard. You're part of their staff. You're the one that submits PSU articles here.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Wheres Metroid
They went from 2D with 16 - 24 colours (NES) to B/W with more detailed graphics(GameBoy) to 32k colours (SNES/GBA) to 3D (N64/GameCube/NDS) then to online play (NDS)
And Warcraft
2D to better 2D to 3D to MMORPG
definately where is C&C series...
Lets not forget Zelda (I Missed out...) but eh, everyone likes it...
And Pong!
B/W 2D to Colour to 3D Pong!!! to Online Pong!!! Pong Extreme!!! 4 player Pong!!! Pong with 2 Balls!!! - arekkusu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35Halo is there 2 times ? ***** this article.
- Dantetheinferno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Some of these games DO look the exact same from generation to generation of games (Look at GT and DMC).
Probably because of the pictures they chose though. - Jyff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24NO ROOM FOR THOSE!!!!@*% needed more room for HALO, obviously the ultimate franchise
- NeoCortex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19So apparently Final Fantasy started at 7?
- RNEMESiS42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19This is dumb. They have the NES Mario but no NES or MSX versions of the Metal Gear series, wtf mate?
- Konstantino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I don't think this is all too good of a comparison (for some individual games). In a lot of those games (Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, etc) they could have grabbed first generation images from a lot further back. No, instead they decide that 3D-PS1 quality graphics were the first generations of gaming. Both Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy were on the NES before the PS1.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@Konstantino
Well it is on a play station site...
"The First Gen of gaming starts when/where we say it does" - princessangry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12what about starfox or sonic????
- museo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11That's because it was.
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@Chingy
You forgot Plasma Pong - sheep300, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12This is so incomplete and inaccurate it hurts the eye.
Obviously the author of that "evolution" only started playing video games when the PS2 came out and picked up some stuff from the PS1, and Mario on NES (caus it's a classic).
Just sad. - Morphinity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Where the ***** is Half-Life?
- rockrapdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Where is ridge racer? burnout? crash bandicoot? prince of Persia? warcraft? tes? myst? jak and daxter?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Where the hell was Gran Turismo 4 in the Gran Turismo picture?
- Echuta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well that was a half-assed article.
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7....ratchet and clank?
also, apparently there were no metal gear games before MGS, neat. - Irfit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8And the 16/32 bits version of mario?
- SiliconRain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm going to Digg this up, not because this article is done well, but because something like this is worth doing. A comprehensive view of the evolution of video games would be worth seeing; hopefully someone out there is talented enough and has enough free time to put a decent one together.
- SchnellFowVay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Bah!! That article is Busch League at best.
As stated, it skipped over all the old Final Fantasies. It skipped over the old Metal Gear games on NES and Game Boy. Where's Zelda? What about Crash?
It was probably written by someone who is currently 16 years old and to whom the video game "golden age" was PLaystation 1.
This could have been a great read, but it unfortunately missed all the REAL advancements that occured in the old 8-bit to 16-bit to 32-bit days. Bah. - djcll6122, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7why do they always show a concept/ pre-rendered image for the last pic. throws this whole thing off, seeing as how games will not look like this yet
- J6stik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Alternate title: "Graphics get better over time."
- metamorfoza, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Title is misleading...
"The Evolution of Game Franchises"
should be
"The Evolution of Game Franchises on Game Consoles" (or whatever.)
Point is that, there is no mention of PC game franchises whatsoever.(doom, quake, C&C, warcraft, ect..) - terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Some of the screenshots seem way more antialiased than they do in the actual games. I swear the Halo 2 shots must be from the Vista version.
The Mario shots are the opposite, though. I don't remember that many jaggies in Sunshine. - NecroSexy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Half-Life didn't evolve. It's nothing against the quality of the game, but it's a fledgling compared to SMB, DW/DQ, FF, Metroid, MGS, which all appeared in the NES 8bit era.
When you go from SMB1 to SM64, that's evolution. - jnosanov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And where is Metroid?
- crossmr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How about showing actual gameplay? Show cut scenes (which many of those obviously are) doesn't really convey the difference.
- prkchpsndwiches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow. No one has mentioned it? People have talked about how they only have 7-13 for Final Fantasy, but look at that picture. It's not from actually gameplay while the others are. Botching up FF and Mario gets a dugg down.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"So apparently Final Fantasy started at 7?"
Sadly, for more than half the Final Fantasy fanbase, it did start at 7. I had a hard time trying to explain to my new PS1-generation friends why Final Fantasy 8 did not have the same characters from FF7, mainly Red XIII. - bIuebonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this article is lame. how many incarnations of mario have there been that have ***** been reduced down to 4? ahem... final fantasy eh?... lame..
- strippenkart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some dude takes a couple of screenshots, writtes the title of the game underneath and that is an article ??
First, how about some bigger shots ? second, are graphics everything ? how about a write up of the different changes in gameplay that happened over the years ?
And finally a look up the work franchise.
When you make an Alien (and a Predator) movie, then make an Alien vs. Predator game, and then make a Aliens vs. Predator movie. THAT is a franchise. a sequel hardly qualifies as a franchise.
dugg down, as it is lame. - SilverSpoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sim City would have been a good game for this.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well the website/magazine is PLAYSTATION Universe, ya know.
I found it quite classy though that they threw in the Mario franchise instead of pretending that video gaming started with PlayStation. - GeneralGore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish someone else would improve on his idea. Add more franchises and don't pick 3 random versions of the game in chronological order and call it "evolution".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Microsoft Flight Simulator.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Microsoft_Flight_Simulator#Flight_Simulator_1.0 - Juroujin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good idea but doesn't follow through. It doesn't go through all of the major franchises. Some glaringly absent ones would be Zelda, Sonic, Street Fighter, Pokemon, Civilization, Warcraft, Diablo, Sim City, HOMM, Command and Conquer, etc. And jumping generations in Final Fantasy (where is I to VI and VIII, IX, X, XI ?) and Mario (where is the Allstars, Super Mario World, and its other Gameboy iterations?).
- wiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is done right, thanks for the link.
Is it just me, or do all these screens say: Graphics are (nearly) done?
There is so little improvement in the last iterations. - jellomizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No that was lame. If you followed some of these games and some others you will see a Real Improvement GTA 1? Mario 1,2,3, World... Cars are realy easy to Render for a long time, so they all look good if you want to show the difference use the Test Drive series, I remember Paying Test Drive with 300x200 Resolution with 4 Colors Cyan, Magenta, Black and White. I am guessing the Kid who wrote this is probably 18 years old or someting started to play video games when 3d exceleration was common and not just used for high end medical systems. This makes me sound like I am massivly old. But still I can't see the difference in most of them espectially with the low res graphics he used for the preview.
- rogue352, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1consoles can be even, better then PC at times. Some genres are better on consoles then they ever will be on PC.
- gnatinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1poor choice of games (most span only one or two console generations) half of them you can't even notice any real "evolution", they just look different.
...and why the hell is halo on there twice? - bsmsmbaphd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty pictures, how about Playability?
=N - Aquashark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2there are other games besides Mario & Halo.. stop diggin' console kiddies
- saibatsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Most likely, Halo appears in the article twice to cover both its XB/XB360 evolution and its PC counterpart.
That said, the article was mildly interesting, but not nearly as deep as I was hoping--the comparison shots feel stale (DMC anyone?), and there should be a bit more substance explaining the visual advances ((excessive) use of bloom, heavy filtering of light sources, etc.), even if they really should cover advances in GAMEPLAY and functionality, not just graphics.
Plus the use of pre-rendered video for the final FF and Mario (Tekken 6 as well?) comparison frames pretty much takes the cake for me. - Heaiser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Resident Evil would have been good for this article.
- seneyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Love the fact that Halo is included twice, and has probably the least noticeable differences. Pretty cool, except for the fact that with things like FF they didn't really include some of the 2D games.
- heartbreakboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@heaiser
Only if they talked about the improved voice acting in addition to the graphical upgrades. - Urzeitlich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This article sucks. They compare completely different poses. You can hardly tell what the difference is. In fact, in one of the Halo comparisons, Halo 2 looks A LOT better than Halo 3. wtf?
