- racketboy, on 10/13/2007, -0/+7You're better off with PS1 games if you want some more shmups on your PS2.
I haven't created a dedicated PS1 listing yet, but here's a PS1 Shmup comparison with the Saturn (another great shmup platform:
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2006/02/shmups-sega ...
But, I do believe the Dreamcast is still the best shmup platform around:

(although, I need to update that post) - racketboy, on 10/13/2007, -2/+9Like I mentioned in the intro, many of them use 3D graphics, but are set in a 2D perspective.
This is often referred to as 2.5D
2D gameplay is the main appeal to people like me who enjoy the simpler controls, lack of camera issues, etc that 2D/2.5D games bring. - FluentinSarcasm, on 10/13/2007, -0/+5Great List.
If that list would have lacked Odin Sphere I would have lost all faith in gaming kind. - markperia, on 10/13/2007, -1/+5Guilty Gear, possibly the finest 2d fighting game ever made. Except for the overly unbalanced Sol Badguy.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very nice lineup... There's quite a few on there that I didn't even know received a PS2 port (at least in the US) such as some of SNK's newest stuff. I'm glad to see SNK is going back to the 2D King of Fighters after the below average 2.5D releases.
My personal recommendations off the list are Alien Hominid, Street Fighter Anniversary, Viewtiful Joe, and The Red Star. Plent of old-school goodness to be had!
I wish more developers would realize that they can make some great 2D gameplay while keeping 3D graphics. - john2kx, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3good list, but R-Type Final doesn't deserve to be listed right under Gradius V.
- EspressoNinja, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3Interesting argument. Did anyone else ever notice that "Wolfenstein 3D" was, in fact, a 2D game? Your character could only move in 2 directions; forward and backward, and left to right. The inability, to say, jump, kept this game well footed in 2 dimensions. I think some of the games on this list (e.g. Phantom Brave) have a 3D perspective, but only allow movement in 2 dimensions. I suppose this would justify them as a "2D game".
- diizy, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2More Smups needed here.
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -4/+6I'm being picky here but some of those games are 3D.
- krackajap, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2I loved Disgaea. I loved the fact that it came with the Japanese voices. I loved how innovative that gameplay was for a tactics game. Except i hated how much of a grind the game became after a while. It became a chore after the novel of it wore off.
- krackajap, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Dugg for having Odin Sphere.
- Peynis, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2seconded...Metal Slug wouldn't be half as fun with 3D graphics
- AwesomeAndy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Mega Man 8 is good if you've never played another Mega Man game (well, okay, if you never played one OR only played Mega Man 5-7) in your life. Alien Hominid is extremely poorly designed and forces too many unavoidable deaths to truly be great.
- dillibob, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2its too bad you cant get marvel vs capcom for less than freaking 80 dollars
- stylerm, on 10/13/2007, -2/+4I actually am going to have to disagree with you. I like well done sprites and animations more than 3D.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The cutoff data just barely excluse Mega Man 8. :(
Alien Hominid is good, and quite difficult. - devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're right on that point - Wolfenstein was great but not really a 3D pioneer except in its popularity. I played a game called the Eidolon on Atari that use a sort of proto-voxel system that made a great 3d effect when you were cruising around this cave.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read the intro of the article -- he stated that.
2D gameplay is the key - Kr1ngle0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice to see there is still some innovation out there
Shame most modern games are all becoming so similar nowerdays. - diizy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1holy crap, nice posts. i agree 100% with the dreamcast, definitely has the best shmups.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the intro....
"What’s especially interesting about modern 2D games is that not all of them use old-school sprites or hand-drawn art. Some of them actually use 3D graphics for all of the visuals, but keep the gameplay in a 2D perspective. The PS2, in particular has a nice balance of 2D games in both artistic style and gameplay. I think any old-school fan will find a number of games on this list that they will enjoy."
He's aware many of these use 3D graphics. He's focusing on 2D gameplay. Does it really matter how it's accomplished? - racketboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm going to do features on each of the newer consoles. I'm just starting with the PS2.
- racketboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Megaman 8 was also a PS1 game, not PS2 :)
I plan on doing a PS1 list down the line. - devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1See above - what really matters (imho) is the plane of control. The game is played in 2D although the graphics make use of polygons for obvious graphical reasons. It's an ongoing debate but I think the 3d games qualify.
- MasterSharma, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1I went into that list looking for Odin sphere... very beautiful game
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to give you some props for that. The game is hard as hell if I remember right.
- john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The extra ships are interesting, but the game itself isn't even as good as R-Type Delta.
- caddyalan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wanted to like Disgaea. It was offbeat, and I believe it was the first game released Stateside with two vocal tracks. But it required a lot of time and learning.
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1The Sega Saturn actually had a pretty good lineup of shmups as well. Have we already forgotten about Radiant Silvergun?
- jayapc87, on 11/01/2007, -0/+0is it still worth it to play a 2d game on a ps2?
anyway minds me of thoose old times playing 2d games - tidussword, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0Valkyrie Profile 2 is 2D or 3D? I thought it's 2D and available only on PS2.
And yeah, 2D games rocks me. - ZombieKiss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Side scroller and cell shading does not mean 2D. A lot of those games on that list were 3D with a fixed camera =
- devindotcom, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1I thought R-Type Final was pretty awesome. You have to put time in to get the great ships though.
- ritzcracker, on 01/10/2008, -2/+2mekkanical
- llamapalooza87, on 10/13/2007, -2/+1Why limit this to PS2? A bunch of those games (Alien Hominid, Metal Slug Anthology, Viewtiful Joe, etc) are multiplatform, and the DS and GBA especially have been havens for 2D games. Just look at New Super Mario Bros.!
- navitatl, on 10/13/2007, -2/+1Cool list... because I TOTALLY need even more ps2 games than I already have
- modix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0No Valyrie Profile 2? There are a few 3d parts to it, but it remains one of the most interesting side-scrollers I've played in years.
