- Majorkerina, on 07/23/2008, -1/+118Agreed, except for Lara and Snake. Lara especially was a move in the right direction.
- JFallon126, on 07/23/2008, -0/+73Sub-zero in MK3 was one of the biggest disappointments of my childhood.
That and the mailman touching me. - ArthurSucks, on 07/23/2008, -1/+71The only one I disagree with is Lara Croft. She's supposed to be a woman not a freak of nature.
- phrenzy, on 07/23/2008, -4/+66Toon link is way cooler than those peter pan looking links. He was more expressive and than just about any other game character in history. That game was gorgeous and still holds up today. It looks like an animated movie.
- habkb, on 07/23/2008, -1/+62Umm... That's not a b-cup.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/23/2008, -2/+59Those aren't B cups. That guy obviously never had a girlfriend.
- NewClassic, on 07/23/2008, -3/+44I'm going to have to disagree with the majority of this list. And I'll explain why, but safe to say since this is an aesthetic taste, disagreeing would be like saying, "Blue's better than green." So, take my opinions with grains of salt.
8 - Snake
Honestly, I will get behind the fact that Snake's clean haircut did look better, but this is an article called "Eight worst Game Character Makeovers," not "Eight Most Inconsequential Nit-Picks." Honestly, it does look a little worse, yes, but it doesn't look bad.
7 - Link
Ah, the single most-often visual complaint I've heard most often. "Toon Link" wasn't a visual disaster, as it's often slated to be. They're dead-on when they say Wind Waker is a fantastic game, and the visuals are incredibly stylish and beautifully done. Here's the issue with the "emasculation" of Link. Everyone in Hyrule looks like that. Gummy Bears are cute, girly, and chewy, but you stick it in a bag full of other gummies and it... looks like it belongs. If they tried to shove Wind Waker link into, say, Twilight Princess, then I'll get behind you and say it was a visual choice for the worst. But Link was in Rome, and did as the Romans did.
6 - Lara Croft
Complaining that a lamp-post with two watermelons got downsized to be more proportionate is like whining that a car with LED lights had to have them removed because the battery kept dying. Practicality shouldn't be an expense to function, and if you look at Lara now versus then, it's a welcome change that she's not packing more in her chest than in her gun pack.
5 - Sub Zero
Here's one I can get behind. Sub Zero was a ninja, now he's a gladiator. I'd have to say visually, it was a turn for the worse, but I'd hardly put it in my "Top 8 Worst."
4 - Simon Belmont
Complaining that Japan turns overly masculine characters into leather-bound, dom-inspired girls, especially if they use whips, is somewhat akin to complaining that kids actually shop at Hot Topic. It's obviously a stupid change, and definitely up there as an awful character design shift, but expected. Still, I agree, what the hell, Japan?
3 - Megaman
I wonder if this article-writer had something against horribly obvious anime-tropes and haircuts? He's moaned about aesthetic choices that I saw three-and-a-half miles away. To be fair, Megaman Trigger (or the Megaman Legends Megaman) is a very decent upgrade from spandex-and-speedo Megaman to Armor-and-Hair Megaman. Also, notably lacking, is the fact that Megaman does wear a helmet in the Legends series, but takes it off when he's just casually going around town.
2 - Punk Bandicoot
I wonder if he ran out of ideas? This design is so minimal I hardly noticed anything amiss until I saw the blown-up version of the arm, when it occurred to me that the tattoo wasn't something my eyes should just glide over. The whole design is as cartoony and silly as Bandicoot himself is. Unfitting for his personality, but otherwise nothing remarkably bad.
1 - Bomberman Mechanoid
Here's a toss-up. The redesign takes everything that Bomberman ever was, cements its feet in, and throws it off of a boat. But, admittedly, like Link, it fits the entire atmosphere of the new game. The game wasn't that great, and the quasi-post-future-mech has been done three-point-seven billion times, but it doesn't look bad. Just not at all fitting for the character. They should've just made an unrelated FPS. Tacking Bomberman to that was a retarded marketing choice, not artist choice.
So, in short,
I disagree with everyone but Sub Zero and Simon Belmont. And Simon Belmont's design is still alright, just fits into the rest of Castlevania as well as a Jewish adviser in the Nazi party. And, admittedly, Sub Zero would fit right in on the set of Grease. - oboredone, on 07/23/2008, -4/+42Dugg for Sub Zero. Man the ***** up ..
- KeyMakEr, on 07/23/2008, -0/+35The Mullet-Snake was put into place to counter Raidens unmanliness. It was a great success.
- Linkin4, on 07/23/2008, -0/+34Keep in mind the writer is probably unfamiliar with the female form. Even if they are a woman.
- Maxjan, on 07/23/2008, -2/+34but..Megaman Legends isn't even the same Megaman! he's thousands of years in the future and a human at that!
Buried for a gaming site not knowing games. - Jonmad17, on 07/23/2008, -0/+28Laura Croft was an improvement. She's more of a C-D cup in Legend than an F cup like the other games. And I like toon link! It differentiated Wind Waker from the other Zelda games.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+27If you look closely old Lara Croft's rack is smiling.
- m4szyman, on 07/23/2008, -0/+26They forgot the prince in Prince of Persia 2
- NeoCortex, on 07/23/2008, -1/+27The mailman touching you was "disappointing"? Were you hoping for more from him, or something?
- Alimack, on 07/23/2008, -5/+29Who gives a ***** about Crash Bandicoot?
- rockrapdude, on 07/23/2008, -0/+21The clothing line was very good (you know, the one you could unlock). The dress was sexy. She has grown up.
- dannyboy3020, on 07/23/2008, -2/+21Joanna Dark in Perfect Dark Zero was terrible...
- brukaoru, on 07/23/2008, -0/+18Snake being unclean and unshaven matches his personality.
- hinmanj, on 07/23/2008, -1/+19Sooo thanks for writing in #3 what the #1 makeover on the list was... On a side note, the artwork for the new bomberman is kinda cool (if it wasn't supposed to be bomberman) with it's little Ironman light in his chest.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+17If I remember correctly, the Sub Zero in MK3 was actually the brother of the original SZ, who returned in UMK3. But 1993 was a long time ago so I could be wrong. Also, I recently saw a video about the history of The Legend of Zelda online, and it breaks down the LoZ continuity and basically it says that there are different Links and Zeldas for different times, that "Zelda" is more of a title than a name, and is passed down from generation to generation, and that may be the reason for Link's different looks. Just like sometimes, He is around 20 years old, such as Twilight Princess, other times, he appears to be around 10 like in Wind Waker. But I think its more e of a theory than actual canon, but it makes sense. Here's the video (I think, my flash player just stopped working) http://ia340917.us.archive.org/1/items/history-of- ...
- Doomsan, on 07/23/2008, -0/+14Oh man, Sub-Zero from MK3 sucked! thank you Midway for UMK3.
- ZenMojo, on 07/24/2008, -0/+13Lara's swinging C's in Legend, and she looks a lot less ridiculous. (Besides, do you really think a double-D with a torpedo bra could do a triple hand spring and land on an icicle? Hell no.)
And mullet Snake looks like Snake Plissken. How do you argue with Snake Plissken? - DrMilkdad, on 07/23/2008, -5/+18WRONG, Snakes Mullet was flawless, there were no flaws.
- sugarazor, on 07/23/2008, -3/+15Gamepro? Seriously?
- Arakcheev, on 07/23/2008, -0/+11Wasn't Snake based off of Snake Pliskin from the Escape From movies? I thought his new look bridged the gap more.
- WITFITS, on 07/23/2008, -0/+11What about Judy Nails who went from cute and sassy in Guitar Hero II to scary and linebacker-ish in Guitar Hero III?
http://blog.collegegamerz.com/images/98598-91195/g ... - AparoidX, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10You know what's funny? Take a look at the boxart for Bomberman on the NES.
http://www.videogamequest.com/NESArchive/Bomberman ...
And now Bomberman depicted in the game.

Honestly, I would be more shocked if I saw what I thought was a cyborg, some guy in PJ's wearing a mask with a pink ball on the back of it. - joser916, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9the 1st sub zero was killed and returned as noob saibot wile the new zub zero was the younger brother see below
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noob_Saibot
In the Mortal Kombat universe, Noob Saibot was the original Sub-Zero, and brother of the younger Sub-Zero. He was killed by Scorpion, in revenge for killing him. Noob Saibot had to earn his place in the Netherrealm and became a deadly force to be reckoned with. In the ending of Mortal Kombat: Deception, it is shown he is willing to kill even his own brother. Again, as seen in Deception, he has partnered with his brother's old ally, Smoke. - Timpin1, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8uh no..he looks like david hasselhoff
- royalwcheese, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8Wow, someone actually payed attention to the story in MK.
- iamgreg007, on 07/23/2008, -3/+10You know what else differeentiated Wind Waker from other Zelda games? The hours you had to waste pointlessly wandering around the ocean in your suck ass pile of sticks tied together to make a boat!!!
- BoneheadFarker, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7Lara...not Laura...
- bozodaclown51, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7but then who named roll after roll?
- opensourcer, on 07/23/2008, -1/+7cell-shaded link is actually pretty cool. the entire game was made in that style...so he can't really be all realistic in a cartoony game. he got misplaced on this list.
- Gill850, on 07/23/2008, -2/+8Good list. Sub-Zero was gay with that look and I never new Crash Bandicoot changed( proving his popularity today).
- sg7791, on 07/23/2008, -0/+6What about Fox?
- Xboxster, on 07/23/2008, -0/+6Wait...no Prince from the Prince of Persia trilogy? Did nobody else notice the change to a more emo look from Sands of Time to Warrior Within?
- BenKenobi88, on 07/23/2008, -0/+6But now he looks like Christian Bale!
- Jonmad17, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5That's funny you say that. I actually recently corrected someone in a forum for making the same mistake.
- tubbsthezombie, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5What about the proposed Vectorman remake?
http://www.armchairempire.com/images/previews/ps2/ ... - Elranzer, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Regarding Sub-Zero:
The Sub-Zero from MK2 is the brother of Sub-Zero from MK1. According to canon, Scorpion kills him in the events of MK1.
The unmasked Sub-Zero from MK3 is the same Sub-Zero from MK2. He is unmasked because he quit the Lin-Kwei ninja clan, which is why the cyber-ninjas Sektor and Cyrax were hunting him.
"Classic" Sub-Zero from UMK3/Trilogy is the undead original Sub-Zero whose true form is actually Noob-Saibot (according to the new endings from MK6).
Regarding Zelda:
Think of it like Princess Zelda XIV or something like that (similar to Queen Elizabeth the 1st, the 2nd, etc).
As for Link, it is a different hero every few games (unless they're direct sequels like Majora's Mask to Ocarina of Time was). "Link" is just his default name each time. - IamKaine, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5 They seriously screwed up Sonic the Hedgehog when they gave him green eyes and teeth. While we're on this topic, don't get me started on "Dr. Eggman", it's "Dr. Robotnik".
- Ferago, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Agreed. Few characters could have a mullet and still be badass, but Snake is one of them.
- Asianwaste, on 07/23/2008, -1/+6Whoever made Bomberman Zero completely missed the point of Bomberman. Bomberman is a concept of pure fun and rarely do players even give a ***** about a plot. I don't think anyone who has ever played Bomberman ever thought that it needed a dark sci-fi makeover. Anyone who even cared for a plot appreciate the light hearted cutsey anime style.
- jam3p, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Yeah, I have to say that the Sub-Zero one was the only one I agreed with. He went from badass ninja assassin to random guido; I'm surprised he didn't shoot hair gel out of his hands in MK3.
- bagboyrebel, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Actually you are wrong, that mega man isn't even in the same universe as any of the other megamans. The idea was that roll named him after her favorite video game character and that's why he's called megaman.
- tdogg241, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Zelda's a girl, and you fail.
- lordtyros, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4Agreed. That could have surpassed LttP as my second favorite Zelda if they hadn't ***** it up with an unnecessary fetch quest before you could finish the game.
- CeeJayDK, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5Which 3 of the 6 Prince of Persia games in existence (one on the way) are you referring to ?
