- giveer, on 05/23/2009, -7/+283I was reading that article thinking: "How in the hell are they not including 'Unskippable cut scenes??" And then , there it was: at #1.. Instant Digg.
- phrogxix, on 05/23/2009, -7/+258The single worst game concept ever has to be however, the ESCORT MISSION. So awful, so painful, so downright infuriating. Nothing is worse than having a weak, slow mindless piece of easily killed AI stumbling along that you have to protect not only from the damage it won't try to avoid but from just wandering off or getting stuck behind a wall.
There has never been an escort mission anywhere ever that somebody finished and said "Wow, that was really cool" or "Man, I'd like to play that again". Generally you just yell "IT'S ABOUT F'ING TIME" or "FINALLY, YOU BASTARDS" - boothash, on 05/23/2009, -8/+21711: Concentrating on shiny graphics and visual effects and letting the playability go to crap.
- dsmx, on 05/23/2009, -4/+1540: Putting an AI in that cheats.
- stevenbrown, on 05/22/2009, -38/+18611. They ***** up a great weapon unlock system and replace it with random *****
- HitmanJustin, on 05/23/2009, -3/+112Forgot overuse of barrels and crates
- Stormwern, on 05/23/2009, -2/+97I'd add "Creating the worlds most ambitious world+game engine and forgetting to add anything worthwhile for players to actually do with it." (Spore, EVE)
- Charlie1er, on 05/23/2009, -11/+98The 10 most common web design mistakes :
2) Leave all the comments on one page instead of inserting a "click here to see the comments"
1) Put the informations on many pages so it will take shorter to load. I personnaly don't want to click 1000000 times on "see next page" - Kuci06, on 05/23/2009, -9/+93***** quicktime events
- MAGZine, on 05/23/2009, -16/+93Achievement grinding != awesome.
The new system will work leagues better (when it works proper... for everyone.) - BrogMaN, on 05/23/2009, -0/+75Or How about in racing games where you can be a full lap ahead of all the other racers and then you hit a wall or something and are delayed for no more than 5 seconds and suddenly all the cars are flying past you. *****! No way they could have caught up.
- timpanogos, on 05/22/2009, -4/+75amazingly accurate... can we get this to all the major design companies?
- ran24, on 05/23/2009, -0/+52God, I hate in stealth type parts of games where enemies can see through frigging walls or have eyes in the back of their heads.
- zeabu, on 05/23/2009, -1/+52it was binary /s
- UltX, on 05/23/2009, -4/+51GTA IV.
It pains me to say that. - alienufo, on 05/23/2009, -1/+47possibly the worst examples of this mistake are all in Goldeneye, where you have escort natalia using computers that EXPLODE in two or three stray bullets.
- JarOfEyeballs, on 05/23/2009, -0/+44Invisible barriers. Is it so hard to make an actual barrier, such as a wall or vertical rocks? 10-cm steps you can't climb for some ***** reason. Time limits that are nearly impossible to beat. Rats and other critters that drop gold or swords when killed.
- tenio, on 05/23/2009, -1/+44In single player escort missions suck, but in multiplayer when the guy you are trying to escort is human-controlled they are some of the most fun.
- Scira, on 05/23/2009, -0/+42In RPG's why do they feel the need to put in tons of status inflicting spells and items, and then make anything worth weakening immune or unfairly resistant to such effects(ex: every final fantasy), or make the status spells more costly and inefficient to be used over just killing the thing(ex: Morrowind, oblivion)
- mohsenxp, on 05/23/2009, -0/+41Sounds like any racer in the past 10yrs actually.
Or how about driving as well as you can and having the 2nd place AI always a convenient 2-3seconds behind you.
Drive much worse and he is still conveniently 2-3 seconds behind you! You would have figured if he could keep pace with you at your best driving he would completely ruin you when you're driving badly.
One reason I've begun to hate racing games. None of them let me lap opponents anymore! - MAGZine, on 05/23/2009, -3/+43Psst. That's only 2!
- m4ttGT, on 05/23/2009, -6/+39Why is it that JRPG makers always have us confused as to the gender of the main characters? I was watching that long opening "cutscene" and was pretty sure one of the characters was a young girl, because the character was wearing a skirt-like thing, but was horrified when a young boy's voice started talking...wtf.
- kaniz, on 05/23/2009, -0/+32Dead Space seems to do a good job at a minimalist HUD. The blue bar on the back of your suit to show health is subtle but very effective (more so than the stupid 'fade screen to black and white'), with ammow/etc displaying when you aim to fire.
- dnc34, on 05/23/2009, -7/+35Yahtzee can give us way more reasons than this article.
- jfreeman, on 05/23/2009, -3/+29Legend of Zelda as an example of *not* using what you learned in the last three hours in a temple to defeat the boss? Each temple gives you a weapon that is *necessary* to defeat the boss!
- RSS14, on 05/23/2009, -7/+32No, the new TF2 unlock system is *****.
Instead of working hard for achievements, you just randomly unlock them.
The easiest way? Just stay AFK in a server that doesn't kick, and come back to enjoy your undeserved items.
Valve ***** up this time around. - EntangledPhysx, on 05/23/2009, -0/+25Sounds like Need for Speed: Underground
- andoru, on 05/24/2009, -0/+23Even worse than unskippable cut scenes: unskippable cut scenes that you have to tediously click through every line of dialog.
You can't even walk away to let the scene play itself out.
Japanese RPG's on the DS are the worst offenders for this. - shininia, on 05/23/2009, -1/+23Resident Evil 4 did the escort mission thing rather well imo.
- CoreyTamas, on 05/23/2009, -1/+23The observations about design mistakes are well-taken and definitely on point.
The writer's jokes, however, are painful to read. - michaelrsa, on 05/23/2009, -1/+23It wouldn't be so bad if they just let you get weapons you don't have first and then start giving you random duplicates.
- Lefts, on 05/23/2009, -0/+21Natalya: James I...
- mkriss5681, on 05/23/2009, -2/+21Firefox + AdBlock is your friend.
- darkane, on 05/23/2009, -5/+23GamesRadar has a lot of nerve criticizing anyone for anything with how ***** their site is.
- Tsumuji, on 05/23/2009, -1/+18Explosive barrels and crates! And chest-high walls!
- sonicon, on 05/23/2009, -0/+17Besides skipping cutscenes, cutscenes all need a pause function.
I missed half of the ending to MGS3 because of a phone call I needed to take.
Oh and I hate waiting a long time for enemies to move in stealth missions. - mizike, on 05/23/2009, -5/+21The only people who hate the new system are those who were grinding out achievements on achievement servers in order to get new weapons within an hour of an update. Valve has stated their intent was for players to gradually unlock the new weapons during ordinary play; this was clearly not happening under the old system.
Under the old system you either had to go to an achievement server, or alter your play style to the extent that you're playing solely for achievements, changing the focus of the game from team based objectives to personal ones (example: there are virtually no circumstances where it is in the team's interests for a heavy to run around punching when he get's ubered, yet that's what he must do to get his new weapons). Sure, you may unlock a few during the ordinary course of play, but to get them all you'll inevitably have to start farming (I doubt there's a single person who casually unlocked the ubersaw through normal play). The system clearly needed to change and while the new system may not be perfect, it seems far more likely to fulfill valve's objective in releasing the new weapons: that everyone who plays will get to use them eventually, not just the hardcore players willing to grind them out.
What valve is essentially saying is: just play the game, have fun, and you'll get your new toys. If you're playing the game just to get the new toys, or using achievement servers to game the system and get the new weapons immediately, you're missing the point and may be happier playing an RPG. - KAJed82, on 05/23/2009, -3/+19Speaking as a games developer, albeit not a very prominent one, a lot of those aren't nearly as simple as they sound and can add a lot of time to development that can cost way more money than the budget will allow. I will say that I do agree with some of the points. I absolutely HATE not being able to skip cutscenes, usually the first thing I put in when we have them.
- evilesttoast, on 05/23/2009, -3/+1912. They add a trading system to trade the 5 duplicates of weapons you and everyone else have.
- FireSlash, on 05/23/2009, -2/+17Good read.
I find the minimalist HUD a particularly annoying issue that's only gaining momentum. My own graphic designer loves minimalist HUDs, and we came pretty close to implementing one. - Zankue, on 05/23/2009, -2/+17dude... skipping cutscene's isn't hard to do KaJed82 agreed with you on that... the idea with the NPC's being pissed off, that's not just "one line of code." If you want to have different conversations based on what you just did to them that's not only several lines of code, but also that much more for each and every NPC in the entire world.
- KAJed82, on 05/23/2009, -2/+16I assume you don't work in the industry, and that is simply you being ignorant.
- gamepr0, on 05/23/2009, -0/+14I personally don't want to click 1 times on "click here to see the comments"
- JackSchittt, on 05/23/2009, -0/+14I'd add this to the following list: Giving us items that are worth more money than any merchant has.
Oblivion was EXTREMELY GUILTY of this. Why give us items worth thousands of dollars when the merchants carry far, far less than that?
Either don't value the items so damn high, or give us merchants with enough cash to actually buy the damn thing. - jon02129, on 05/23/2009, -0/+14Although i do agree with you, ICO (PS2) was basically a huge 'escort mission' (the whole game), and it is one of my all-time favorite games.
- LtAction, on 05/23/2009, -1/+15They left out the always deadly, inappropriate and uncalled for Difficulty Spike.
- Llanowar, on 05/23/2009, -1/+14What game is the screenshot from point 4 from? (the heavy inventory one)
- MrBogard, on 05/23/2009, -4/+17Unlocks are *****. Just give the weapons to every user in every update.
This isn't World of Warcraft. - mohsenxp, on 05/23/2009, -0/+12That's one thing I disagree about. Everything else was totally spot on for me.
I think having to work out how to defeat a boss (as long as it is reasonable and not stupidly frustrating resulting in you pausing the game and searching the net for a solution then feeling low about yourself coz you think you've cheated and you really didn't wanna cheat, not this time! You wanted to get your money's worth. But you cracked! You knew the internet was right there and you couldn't resist. Maybe next time...maybe the next time you're stuck you'll actually dedicate yourself to it completely!) is kinda fun. - SalmonGod, on 05/23/2009, -0/+11Spot on observation about Spore. I was so enamoured with the set-up and the customizable creatures.... and got bored with the gameplay so miserably fast. I'm still sad about it.
