- shortkid422, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Well, atleast they got 1998 right...probably the best year ever (Metal Gear Solid, The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, and Half-Life)
- BaconBits, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19This is like half of the years video games have actually been around.
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Speaking of Total Annihilation, wern't they making as sequel? I loved that game dearly."
Supreme Commander is being made by a lot of former Cavedog guys. It looks like it might be even better than TA. - dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Thats what I was trying to convince my friend of, so many games that came out that year that were just amazing, also included Diable and Starcraft, and include pokemon(not a big fan) but still played by millions.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+81996 was the best year for online gaming, because that's when Quake came out. Quake itself was groundbreaking, but what makes Quake the best online FPS in history is the fact that in 1996 there were very few kiddies online. Most of us were in our 20s and we were there to have fun. I played Quake online for a good two years and I never, not *once*, saw a cheater.
It was glorious. - turnpaugh622, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10www.getfirefox.com
then get the adblocker, script blocker, and flash blocker. i never even saw the banner. - briguy200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How can none of the NES years be here. Those were the years that paved the way for all home entertainment systems that followed. dugg anyway
- chrisbg99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If this is North America-specific, where is 1985? The year that started the rescue of the videogames industry after the crash.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Anyone else noticed how you don't need to click the thumbnails of the 80's and early 90's games to recognise them, yet all the > 1998 games just look the same?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I clicked on every year, reminiscing over all the fun I had - then I got to 2005.
Things have definitely changed. - dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ill give you Hl2 and Farcry which I thought were amazing, but Doom 3 wasnt anything special when it came to gameplay.
- Rageous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Totally disagree with the late 90s... they had some great *games* those years, no doubt, but on the whole they weren't very good years across the board.
1991 gets my vote for best year ever. The year Nintendo debuted what's still the greatest console ever. Super Mario World, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, ActRaiser, Street Fighter 2, Final Fantasy 2, Wing Commander 2, come on... that was a phenomenal year. You couldn't beat games fast enough... and those were all the ones that started the trends we continue now.
To hell with modern-day graphics-intensive bore-fests... that was back when it was all about *gameplay*. - MarkCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Ocarina of Time = greatest video game of all time. I still play the damn thing, on N64 too. As far as I'm concerned, that makes '98 the greatest year ever for video games.
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, 1998 was when I really started to get into gaming..
first time i played a 64 was in 1998...
I got a SNES in 1998....
(Pokemon took off in 1999 for me, also on the list) - Mkay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I still play Starcraft online...I love that game dearly
- digg-dugg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The might as well have just done the best games for every year. Cause they missed some of the most important games, i guess due to a slower year? And where was 2004?; Half-Life 2, FarCry and Doom3 were all released.
- anocross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Agreed. Homeworld, Quake 3 Arena, and System Shock 2 are awesome games; I still play through Homeworld every few months and my friends still LAN Q3A. I liked SS2's gameplay, but it was way too scary for me to play alone. Always have to play co-op.
Minor tidbit about the article, though - they left out Planescape: Torment! I know it's not the most popular game, but god damn I love it. - goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31993 ftw. Without Doom I would not be a gamer today.
- StoneWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Quake online didn't excite me until QuakeWorld came out. The QuakeWorld + Team Fortress combination was unbeatable back then :)
- digg-dugg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and it sucks to see even gamesradar.com missed the "Sega MasterSystem" boat. Its too bad no one played any of the incredible games on that system. And to this day, I still cant see how the old Nintendo games could even match up to it.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Speaking of Total Annihilation, wern't they making as sequel? I loved that game dearly.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the gripe there would have been this--those are all PC games, no?
- Andrewc989, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I had to pick the number one year for gaming, it would be 1998. Even the writer admits that it was this year in gaming that spawned the article. You've got Metal Gear Solid, The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, and Half-Life...enough said.
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3TA sequel rumors have been floating around for a while, the studio that made it Cavedog is no longer around, but the creator said he would like to revisit the game.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3UT2k4 too... The greatest deathmatch FPS game of all time. Came out end of 2003, but it was meant for 2004.
- ASoggyWaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmmm, i would say 2005 wasnt really a good year, 2004 tho, had half life 2, CS:S, UT: 2004 (basically), as well as some other games i cant really think of any now (edit: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)
also end 2006/2007 looks great too, starts with enemy territory quake wars and splinter cell 4, then comes crysis and UT: 2007, half life two episode two (portal, TF2), and huxley, and a few other big ones
i hate to count my chickes before the hatch but i bet this will be a good year coming up to say the least! - GlitchEnzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While I agree that 2004 should have been on the list just for Half Life 2, you can't ignore great games like Shadow of the Colossus and God of War in 2005. I haven't played Resident Evil 4 yet, but I have been hearing from everyone that its amazing. (Reminds me that I really need to pick up that game.)
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They mentioned the likes of Halo and Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball. Good God. I'm sorry but I cannot digg this. :/
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Get some type of adblocking software and you won't have to put up with annoying things like that.
- nrighton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about 1985 and the introduction of the NES. It slightly changed the face of home console gaming.
- reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yea dont forget starcraft
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I loved Ocarina...but Final Fantasy VII makes a tough argument.
- melanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice article
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4not enough mention of Starcraft, I'll help:
STARCRAFT STARCRAFT STARCRAFT
OMGZERGRUSH! - lolwtfhaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm actually looking into setting up a quakeworld teamfortress server... Nothing beats running around as an engineer, throwing EMP grenades and setting up machine gun turrets in unusual places.... I hated the medics that managed to fly across the map on their own grenade and then make everyone hallucinate while they wisked off with the flag...
Being a spy was by far the most fun--- getting onto the sniper nest and stabbing those bastard snipers in the back was so satisfying... - raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thing is, while Nintendo started revitalizing the American home video game market in 1985, no one else really did (okay, the Sega Master System came out but I've only ever met one person who had one of those.)
Those years from the crash until about 1989 were great for us with the 8-bit PC's (especially C64, Atari x00, and for our friends across the pond the Speccy) but this article seems to not be aware of that whole scene. Nintendo was really the only company having any success at consoles, and the arcade was dying an agonizingly slow death until Street Fighter 2 gave it a couple years of extra oxygen. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm young... but i remember 2001.... what a year.
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah.. I like that year ... the early Nintendo years were good also... I loved Duck hunt...But I still think Donkey Kong is STILL one of the best games ever...
- spooq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"To hell with modern-day graphics-intensive bore-fests... that was back when it was all about *gameplay*."
This sort of thing was being said almost word-for-word back then too, about even older games. How soon we forget. - orb_nsc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I give them credit for recognizing Demon Attack. That Atari 2600 game callused my fingers and nearly gave me a heart condition. Most intense Atari game ever!
- puttly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Granted, 1980 wasn't the birth of video games, but it was when the baby started making some serious noise."
:D - josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quake 3 arena was fantastic... or My favorite from the year before; Half-Life.
Twas the start of the DEATHMATCH phenomena... Me and my freind Dan used to get a deathmatch weekend going. We would have like 5 players in different rooms of the house till the sun came up... Yeah of course this was before broadband was readily available in our area, and a better point to make it was before he got married.... - zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I shall concur,
However I have a strong feeling that 2006 will be huge by the end of the year.
(Can you say.... Twilight Princess? =D ) - themadjuggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, this is a very well-informed list. I was at first shocked not to see any of the NES years, but when you think about it, the Nintendo was the sole system to dominate in that era. Perhaps a handful of good games were released for it each year. These guys were just spot-on especially with 1998 and 2005.
Looking at those three yers 1997-1999 brings me back and makes me appreciate how awesome it was to be an avid gamer back then. - mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They credit Robotron to the Atari 2600. The 2600 didn't even have a home port of that game. No digg.
- Kaioshin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Damn that flash banner. I will not shoot the paparazzi (and thus win a PHP or DS). Why must people include sounds in banners?
I can't bring myself to read that thing over the constant repetative cluttering sound of that "camera". Not to mention it promotes violence, etc. - skywake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3what banner?
all i see is a whole pile of "AdBlock" tags... - TheBigBrother, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You've been selected!!!
Free Xbox 360
: ( - digg-dugg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree. It looks like they got lazy.
- axiomata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11999 for PC games.
