TheSpecialist's HDDHackr v0.90 - Upgrade Xbox360 with cheap 120GB PC drive
xbox-scene.com — TheSpecialist released the update of HDDHackr many of you were probably waiting for. With the release of an official 120GB drive by Microsoft you can now use this tool to make your own 120GB Xbox360 HDD using a Western Digital BEVS-LAT drive (that's a cheap SATA 2.5" PC/laptop drive):

- sotopheavy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Microsoft made a great gaming system with a clever purchasing system. Every aspect of owning a 360/PS3 is designed to get your money away from you just like a theme park (micro-transactions). Ever been to 6 flags or play Roller coaster tycoon? In RCT3 you can see how much money a person has on them and try to get every last bit of it before they leave the park.
They will market to your ego (Elite) or your "need to fit in." (bandwagon) - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136072
that should be it... or not doesn't say for sure if its lat or rst... - steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7So....how long until the "White Elite XBOX 360!!!"s come on sale on eBay?
- bocaJWho, on 10/12/2007, -21/+9@sotopheavy
I beg to differ with you on the PS3 - ever since it was released, one of the big selling points was that you could upgrade the hard drive to whatever size you wanted without voiding the warranty. They have also been significant backers of Linux on their system, with generic USB ports that let you use any standard keyboard, not a special USB-approved one.
Don't get me wrong, Sony really wants to lock you into their format type - Blu-ray - just like MS wants people locked into HD-DVD, but in terms of controlling accessories, MS is much worse than Sony. - Jamminn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If your in good ol'Blighty -

1. You can use any USB keyboard on the 360
2. Of course Sony is backing Linux, for the same reason MS is backing HD-DVD right now.
3. Microsoft has said that is Blu-Ray wins they will release a Blu-Drive.
4. sotopheavy was talking about micro transactions not accessories.
5. Get a clue - velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@rlg420 -
3. Microsoft has said that it would be possible for them to release a Blu-ray drive. - NeoOfTheSith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ bocaJWho
"just like MS wants people locked into HD-DVD"
I'm pretty MS isn't too worried about shoving HD-DVD down our throats... - scootinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sotopheavy:
Wouldn't that be the objective of almost all businesses, including gaming console companies, both past and present?

- razrielle, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4The font, it makes my eyes bleed!
- Jibberwalk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2What the hell are you talking about?
- klipseracer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Well. This is worth digging considering I was going to make a post of my own... :)
Please, someone figure out an easy way to distinguish the RST from the LAT drives while purchasing online. Newegg.com has one available for a good price, yet it does not specify if its an RST or LAT. I definately do not trust calling a rep. They will just sell it to you. - vampireblood, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3People will do anything to pay less for an already FAR to overpriced HDD drive.
- kidd3ckz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Yeah but what would you do for a Klondike bar?
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I wonder if it would mess up some games if the drive wasn't 7200 RPM. Because the WD drive they are talking about I believe is only 5400RPM
- PrismSub7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wasn't the original 20gb version 4200rpm?
- ChrisB187, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Xelloss,
The 360 is not allowed to cache data to the hard drive, because the core system does not have a drive. The developers are not allowed to even think about touching the drive.
All data is streamed off the DVD, so game play should not be harmed - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ChrisB187
No Oblivion and other huge games cache stuff on the HDD. Halo 2 even does. Just if it needs to the games will run just off the disc.
For the RPM, I know E on Major Nelsons podcast said the drive was 7200 RPM for the 120 GB, but not sure on the 4200 RPM drive for the 20 GB, just wish Microsoft would state some of these facts.
- ONI5, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Too much trouble and work. Until it can be all automated I'll buy the official HDD.
- balbaid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to the same guy who created the hack, the HDD on newegg works with version 0.83.

I'll be buying it soon. - damonbaird, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This is a good hack and saves almost $100, but I would not bother until after the spring dashboard update. Microsoft can make these drives unusable really fast with a clever update that blocks usage these "hacked" drives. Wait a few weeks...
- Sutanreyu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So wait wait wait...
In order to even do this, you need a 120GB 360 hard drive to extract the first couple of sectors?
Uh... >_>- ChrisB187, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You just need to find a copy of the dump online.
This particular method has been around for a long time now, The mod community has just been waiting for the official 120gig release so we can keep on keeping on with non-MS stuff. - ApolloImBurning, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I do believe there is a chance that you could be banned from XBL if you are using a someone else's drive key (i.e. hard drive keys must be unique). I would proceed with caution if downloading the SS files needed for this hack online, or at least wait until more information is available.
- ChrisB187, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You just need to find a copy of the dump online.
- EggoTrip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Uhm, yes games do cache off the hard drive on the 360.
It is an option by the developers to use the hard drive if the gamer has got one. Oblivion is a prime example of a game whose load times drop down if a user has one. - yellowmello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any one know the speed of the new MS drive?
- Synner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Let me see if I have this right - you have to rip some files from a Microsoft 120gb HDD, in order that you can use your own 120gb HDD?
So you have to buy a spectacularly over-priced addon from Microsoft, and then mod it, so you can then go out and buy ANOTHER HDD - although much cheaper - to use instead?
Hello? Can anyone else see the problem there?- xconverge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Did you even read the article? You buy a cheap harddrive and use it instead of buying an expensive one. This can only be done after proper formatting and such.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Wow, if only it was this easy to upgrade a PS3 HDD. Oh wait.
- klipseracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ xconverge
"Did you even read the article? You buy a cheap harddrive and use it instead of buying an expensive one. This can only be done after proper formatting and such."
You must not have 'read the article' because every drive released by MS has a unique drive key. therefore if everyone downloaded the sectors off the internet and used them, it would be blatant that you are downloading copyrighted data and using it in a hacked drive, opening yourself to the possibility of yet again a ban from live. before you start shouting crap off READ... F*CK... I hate some of the people on here.- xconverge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Was that the point I was arguing? Synner didn't seem to mention the unique keys of the drives. You don't have to have a unique key necessarily.
