Q. So how do I get my 80 GB WD HDD working as 80 GB in my x360 ?
A. There are 2 options: wait for a release by MS, so you can use that sector 16 (or hope that the rumours that they ARE out there already are true) OR wait for the kernel to be hacked. These are the only 2 options. - tciny, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Why did they go with having these proprietary, overpriced harddrives? Not that it didn't make sense from a business standpoint, but rather from the perspective that: If you want to make your console an media hub then better let people get decent amounts of storage for prices that are actually worthwile considering... even Sony got that right...
- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -33/+7@tciny:
I believe that question could be asked for the controller system in the xbox as well...also why there aren't any standard usb ports or such.
The xbox is a very locked down system only using ms vendor specific hardware.
It's a bad choice but very typical of MS to reinvent the wheel and not using standards that are already set. It's been the same business with Windows or Office or IE or any other products they have created. It is also the biggest reason to avoid using MS products. - Quarem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@tciny
While I am sure they enjoy selling overpriced peripherals to 360 owners I would also imagine that security plays a roll in them limiting the storage devices that can be read and written to by the 360. There was a lot of trouble with hacks / mods on Halo 2 for the original Xbox which were possible because people could easily get data from a PC to an Xbox. Microsoft probably wanted to create the biggest barrier they could to prevent hackers from compromising the system and thus the experience of Xbox Live.
Still I wish they could have dealt with hacks in a different way or priced their peripherals more reasonably. - decipherd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@ alx242
Hmmm yes, why aren't there any usb ports on the 360?
/sarcasm - JohnyD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@tciny
They want to sell MCE's dude... not HDD's. Also, now they want to sell Vista licenses.... again not HDD's. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well, first off most people I know haven't fulled their HDD yet and those who did, it's all with stupid crap they shouldn't even have in the first place.
So while this is cool, it's too much hassle for something that isn't really necessary.
I'm not expecting my comment to be popular, but just be smart about what you store... want music and videos? Use a freakin' PC instead.

Looks like TheSpecialist really is the Bunnie of this generation of Xbox, huh?
I'm glad this finally came about. The Xbox360 Hacking community has been waiting for a tool like this. Now it should be interesting to see if this can be built off of.- Keloran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2bugger all till ms releases a bigger hdd, i guess ill just keep using my extra hdd that ms sent me
- nlbailey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Awesome, been waiting for something like this for awhile!
- jihadjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Finally, well soon... I will be able to store more than one HD movie i buy online!
- JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Oh, I see your console doesn't support other hard drives. Scoff Scoff Scoff.
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This doesn't allow you to install a SATA of any size you want. Your hard drive can still only be the maximum size of the MS hard drive. So in the future if Microsoft releases a 120gb hard drive then this hack will allow you to use your own 120gb SATA without having to use Microsoft's official one. Yawn.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, considering that MS is charging $100 for 20 gigs ($5 a gig), while a 120 gig notebook drive goes for $90 ($0.75 a gig) -- this is a big deal. I'm guessing that when MS releases their bigger hard drive, it won't be a $5/GB ripoff, probably something like $200-250. In that case, this hack will save you well over 100 dollars.
BTW, without a hacked kernel, it's difficult to see how any workaround would allow you to use the full capacity of a hard drive. After all, with only one supported peripheral, the X-Box would have to know something was up if the capacity was larger than 20 gigs.

- braditude101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0well, thats my momma!
- Company_Man, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1GfxWench: "Sure, if ya want to do it the _easy way!" Geesh
- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1to hard right now...
- TECHBUZZARD, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2Shouldn't be no need for a hack if Micro-Gates listened to what the people wanted !!!!! And kept up with todays technology
ahem...NO TRUE HS ( only Standered ) VGA output is not TRUE HD.....Component on 360 is still STandered HD not TRUE and the 360 doesn't not do 1080 p ...ALL A LIE and IT HAS BEEN PROVEN. HDMI would have been nice BILL !!!
A bigger HArd Drive so i can truly utilize the 360 as an extender on my VISTA or MEDIA CENTER PC !!! And download more than 2 movies !! Jesus my ARCHOS and IPOD have 20 gigs for pete's sake ( ROLL EYES ! )
Basically without XBOX LIVE ( first GEN ONLINE SYSTEM SETUP) The 360- would be the Cheese Grader it looks like and you Xbots would have nothing to hold on too far as an arguments sake. But that will soon come to an end once PS3 Free ONLINE NEtwork takes off by MARCH , IN FULL EFFECT :)- seiha, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5judging by how long it took to fix ps2 titles to playback correctly on a ps3, the free online network will take off in full effect by 2009.
- TECHBUZZARD, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2Is that right SEIHA !! I guess Since their launch was only NOVEMEBER 16th and it is now JAN 26 since the latest update from SONY all PS1 and PS2 games are completely working and the image/pixel issue has been fixed SINCE IT IS A TRUE HD SYSTEM and PS1 and PS2 GAMES weren't intended for HD viewing - roll eyes!! IDIOT but that issue has been solved
get your news straight XBOT!!! MARK
And i believe they did it in record time , something i can't say to MS as the 360 still can't play 1st Xbox games and only as of the end of NOV did they recently fix titles newer titles that were new to the end date of the first Xbox in 05 that couldn't even play on the 360 1 YEAR TO DATE of that systems release !!! And osme still don[t !
SO GET YOU FACTS STRAIGHT MR. FOOT IN MOUTH !!!! - MiDri, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I want to make a comment about how I feel sorry for you and your free network being people tend to be more of an ass over stuff they do not have to pay for and have no fear of being banned from -- however; the 600$ price tag puts it out of reach of all but the most spoiled of brats. Live! does have its share of stupid people, thankfully most of them stick to Halo and the Tom Clancy Series...
- Bmulley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@ TECHBUZZARD
While you raise some good points, your strange use of CAPS and random childish jabs"- roll eyes!! IDIOT" are deserving of a digg down. - m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You're going to have to accept that Sony killed the PS3 with the high price. SONY WON"T BE #1 in this generation.
Stop raving on insanely about 1080P and TrueHD. All a Sony fanboy can hope for is that they see the light and match the price of the 360. Mark my words, it's game-over for Sony.
One more life lesson for you - free is never good. - 0olong, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Ladies and gentlemen, if you now have a PS2 you can trade it in for $100 towards your PS3, this drops the 20 gb version down to $399, which is equal to the XBox 360 "Premium". Please stop whining about price, because if you cannot afford a PS3 now, then you can't afford a 360 and your paper route money will need to be hoarded for a month to get your Wii... though the way they're shipping means you won't get one for a month anyways...
Digg down all you want.
- geoffrey, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0Whenever one of my friends ask if I am getting a PS3 or XBOX360, I just tell them I'm going to use the money instead to buy a computer and get an emulator.
- TECHBUZZARD, on 10/12/2007, -19/+0Really good luck on getting a 360 emulator and a PS3 emulator considering they don't exist still haven't perfected playing Xbox or PS1 or PS2 games successfully on the PC ....ass wipe
MAN they must be making these peoples BRAINS at MICRO-GATES - MiDri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@TECHBUZZARD -- jeeez man settle down, The way you type and phrase sentences makes me think you either are a punk out to look cool in front of your internet stranger friends or you are going to have an aneurysm any minute.
- xNaquada, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@TECHBUZZARD
Does someone pay you to say retarded things in CAPS?
Micro-Gates? Thats ***** retarded (did you just make that up?) and I don't even own a xbox/x360 ..[nor am I particularly pro-MS]..wait let me correct myself...
Correction follows:
MICRO-GATES? Thats ***** RETARDED and I don't even OWN a Xb0X/x360.
Stop being so anti-everything that isn't PS3/Sony and maybe, just maybe a ounce of intelligence will enter your mind on how to COMMUNICATE [capitalized just to drive the point home to yo, apologies to all other diggers that know proper spelling/grammar.
Jeez even your name is in caps. You stay classy now. - geoffrey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1There are no emulators for XBOX360 and PS3? Wow, I really did not know that. Listen kid, when the computer was invented console machines became obsolete; that's all I was saying. And to pay that much for a console, you can get a decent PC. Take your whambulance somewhere else.
- partialinfinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ROLL EYES !
- TECHBUZZARD, on 10/12/2007, -19/+0Really good luck on getting a 360 emulator and a PS3 emulator considering they don't exist still haven't perfected playing Xbox or PS1 or PS2 games successfully on the PC ....ass wipe
- TECHBUZZARD, on 10/12/2007, -21/+0NO ,From the start of your post you seem to be the one having apparent issues
Punctuating and capitalizing letters ( to get the point across ) last i checked this is not a CRIME or a hazard to anyone. Go blow away. Nobody including myself answers to you.
I guess free speech is an issue with you. You must be in line with those towel heads from IRAQ ah XBOT !! Lover/Free Speech hater !
BTW I haven't a swelled head over free online. I just like ( and pointing out) how you XBOTS how don't own a PS3 and make false claims to justify your ignorance fanboy- issm's on Bill GATES NUT SACK or a SYSTEM- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Your engrish looks fine to me!
- Bmulley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@TECHBUZZARD
Damn, just when I thought you were getting the hang of this "reply" system, you go and mess it up like that! - shetboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whoa, with examples of PS3 community members like we see here I'm now even more thankful of my decision to get an x360.
Thank god I will never meet this guy on LIVE! (or equivelant)
- dudu78, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0@alx242
There are USB ports on the xbox360. Look at the back of the box and you'll see them. How else should you be able to hook up your iPod to the 360?
EDIT: Damn. How do you reply to a reply?- DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1at this point you have to reply to the parent and address the reply to the person you're responding to (ie @dudu78 blah blah)
- EzarKun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I got a better idea
MS should stack 3 of these on top of each other
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/25/samsungs-60gb-1-8-inch-hard-disk-now-shipping-psp2-you-list/
and ship!
I dont need it cause I am not gonna use the Video market place, not because its bad, cacuse I cant afford it.
and hey!, I am totally fine with free SD stuff from torrents! - TheUnashamed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is the kind of breakthrough on the 360 that I was waiting for before I bought it...
Well, this and Halo 3. - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is pretty useless as long as they haven't released an "official" bigger disk. It really stinks how they create an artificial price for what should be a commodity item. 99 bucks for a 20GB harddrive is obnoxious. I really wish someone would tell some MS people that to their face in some of these interviews.
- blanski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are a couple of alternatives, although they are not as good as just plugging in a bigger hard drive:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/mods/USB%20Hard%20Drive%20Mod.htm
http://gear.ign.com/articles/718/718315p1.html - crowfire09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldn't say this is useless, just a bit closer to getting that door wide open. Keep up the good work and don't give up.
- ddubbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1finally. i used up all of the memory on my xbox 360 the first day. actually in the first hour.
- marshall007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1no you didn't!!
20GB in an hour??
