RE4 is an action game, not a survival horror game.

11. You must always be alone, even if there are a few of you, the smartest move is to venture off in an abandoned environment even though it has clearly be established that there are hostile beings everywhere with full intention to kill you.

"Scream" for video games. Just play with lights on in your room and low volume on the TV and you'll be okay.

I'm glad that a fan of the genre pointed out that the control mechanisms in these types of games is pretty much broken. I haven't played a survival horror game since RE1 and I really wanted to play SH2 and RE4 but the controls were terrible. I'm not saying the developers didn't achieve what they set out to do, I'm just saying that it's much easier for them to scare you when your character can't move effectively. When a zombie snail has a fair chance of outmaneuvering you, it's time to rethink your game mechanics.

If you really want to take steps forward in the genre, give players the character mobility they're accustomed to and find ways to scare them still. Dead Space and the new Alone in the Dark look promising in this regard.

11. The game will attempt to give you a thoroughly believable scientific explanation for everything from zombies to poltergeists to bleeding walls, then you discover the final boss and mastermind is an 11 year old girl.

An OK list but a bit too much of a focus on RE.

I love survival horror games but at the same time I'm too chickened to play them if nobody accompanies me. I always drag my sister along to play with me although she pretty much hates it. I have phobia when opening doors or when the elevator opens because I tend to think that something or someone is on the other side preparing to ambush me. Hence, it takes me a few seconds to step into a new room.

So what? That list still makes horror games exciting to play.

AVP2 and SH1 are the only games that have ever scared me.

I'm fairly sure that neither of the Condemned games fall into any of these traps. At least, if I remember right.

(For pre-RE4 games anyway) 1x) Your 'trusty' Knife is mostly useless, as getting close enough to use it puts you directly in the attack range of your enemy... most of which attack faster than you can swing. And chances are even if you swing first, your enemy will barely take any damage at all and won't even flinch as it proceeds to attack you and drive you into critical health anyway. You're better off throwing a banana peel at your foes.

Lack of ammo. I was so ***** at times on Resident Evil 4.

I hope it's realized how much better a series Silent Hill is compared to Resident Evil, especially in terms of the survival horror genre. I'm an enormous fan of both but when it comes to actual horror Resident Evil doesn't even hold a light to the Silent Hill series. Resident Evil 4 is ***** excellent but it's not a survival horror game, just a TPS Adventure and it pretty much jumped the shark as far as the RE series goes. I mean it's not Resident Evil unless Umbrella is involved somehow. I can't wait for Resident Evil 5 (even though I hate both Redfields) but I just hope it involves Umbrella.

RE4 was the most ridiculously lame / comical game I have played in some time (played it last nov).

Limited ammo, crappy save system, and ***** that jumps through the window. That's all you need.

Whoever finds Resident Evil 4 scary can jump off a cliff.

BTW, I recommend playing 'Obscure'. Pretty much beats all Resident Evil games in the horror department (plus it looks better and has co-op).

Condemned 2: Bloodshot is quite frankly one of the scariest games i've played. When it's nighttime and I have the surround sound pumped up it scares the crap out of me. I'll never forget the first time when I put on the fire mask and right when your character looks up a flaming homeless zombieish man is running at me full bore, screaming, arms flailing and the only weapon I have is a steam pipe...
