My favorite quote from the piece. Great work Jim. - Badandy127, on 05/06/2008, -1/+32There was never any sin in the world before the first GTA was made.
FACT - OnlyGirlOnDigg, on 05/06/2008, -2/+33My dad always goes on about how video games are corrupting the youth. Video games are just a scapegoat. Yes, the are in some cases a factor, but we also have the mainstream media pushing sex, consumerism, and violence down our throats. We allow our children dress in unwholesome fashions. Schools are lowering their standards to make Billy's parents happy because now he has all A's. Simply put, society is pushing forth an environment that fosters moral and social decay.
- matthew2398, on 05/06/2008, -1/+29You know before games there was no Jack Thompson.
- PopcornDave, on 05/06/2008, -0/+20Yeah because all those quarters I wasted on Pole Position make me want to drive into white pickets along the roadway and all those hours of playing Dig Dug made me tunnel under everywhere I go.
Give me a break. When your dad was a kid, it was Rock n' Roll. When you're a parent, people will find something else to bitch about. - aspec, on 05/06/2008, -1/+18I'm not sure that's true. Wasn't he behind blocking all those rap albums in the 90s?
- dafunkmonster, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14I personally think that this cursed swing dancing is a much more pressing issue. Our innocent sons and daughters shall be damned to hell if allowed to dance in such lewd forms as "the charleston" or "the twist". Jazz music is the devil!
- Doomsan, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1310: Never actually PLAY the game
I wonder if Jack Thompson owns any console. - anarcurt, on 05/06/2008, -0/+12They throw stones at prostitutes! Murders! Rapes! Incest! This book promotes violence and is targeted at our youth! We must ban the Bible!
- aki42, on 05/06/2008, -0/+12Have you seen how much comic books are corrupting our youth?
- Aensland, on 05/06/2008, -0/+12There's a lot of naive people out there who believe in anything any "think of the children!" tard says. It doesn't hurt to keep calling him out every time he spews more crap.
- spawnfree, on 05/06/2008, -0/+10All video games do is give kids something to talk about, only the abused/bullied/psychotic actually take violent ideas from games into the real world.
Geoffry Dahmer got his kicks watching the emperor frying Luke in return of the jedi. Thats a universal rated movie folks.
Heres an idea, why don't we screen people for psychosis when they are in school? Oh yeah, our society is not based on caring; it is based on creating and exploiting mis informed people for the benefit of psychotic people at the top of the stack. Actualy solving the problem would lead us to identify them and they know it.
Who funds these useful idiots who really believe pacifying games will make any difference to our corrupt society? - Ocelot13, on 05/06/2008, -0/+10Im an expert on this, and this is true.
You gotta think of the kids, you gotta keep them away from this malignant tumor on society. Remember....kids. - craighoxton, on 05/06/2008, -0/+9He was that Witchfinder General guy in a previous life
- WoollyMittens, on 05/06/2008, -0/+8Novels, jazz music, movies, rock and roll, television, comics, hip hop and now video-games... Every generation has a scapegoat. It's merely a matter of waiting for the oldies to die off.
- TantrooM, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9Hyporcracy: Write a game CEO's mom about how she failed to raise her son and that caused him to make violent games. However it was not the mother's fault when their child shoots up a school. Jack's got that one double checked.
- Murdats, on 05/06/2008, -0/+8which is why non offensive GTA posters are getting pulled, why laws keep getting thrown at the courts to try and ban games, which is why killers get off light when they cry "the video games made me do it" right? because this sort of stuff influences no one.
that aside I want my damn R rating in australia (but think of the children) - monktallica, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8Seems like HRC has been sniffing the same stuff these guys have.
- Icecream, on 05/06/2008, -0/+6You have to wonder?
- moomeep, on 05/06/2008, -0/+6pure gold, enjoyed.
- thelik, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5I seem to remember before attacking video games was really popular people attacked beavis and butthead and professional wrestling
- DeadlyCouncil, on 05/06/2008, -1/+6What you call moral and social decay I call entertainment.
- thebloodvayne, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4I just wonder if ANY of these so called experts play video games. This is why I can hardly believe the ***** they're spouting.
- flashback99, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4People have been getting violent over books for centuries.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Is your dad a puritan pilgrim?
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3for me it was "Scare-mongering was voted America's favorite mongering 2006." I remember taking that poll and saying it was whore-mongering. go figure.
- spawnfree, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3now whoring your games on forums should be illegal.
- spawnfree, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3japan.
- Andrwmorph, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3That "Bible" has caused a lot of fuss
- imnojezus, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2He was still there. He was just being kept busy by rap music, sexy movies, and Janet Reno.

Video games were just the first scapegoat people would actually listen to him rail against. - UtopiaInTheSky, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2The Beatles corrupted my children, who are now in their 50's, and have their own children being corrupted by GTA, and...
- Eshestun, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Where can I find some of that interactive torture porn they referenced in the intro?
- nikkesen, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2That's because Mortal Kombat was... violent. That is, if you played the Sega Genesis version and not the wussified SNES version.
- geoff1210, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Badandy would know. He is bad, so he knows about that kind of thing. Trust me, I'm an expert in name analysis.
- antdude, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Or played any games (don't need to own one).
- ericrous, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2No, it's that philosopher Socrates! He's the real culprit!
- flashback99, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2When adults fail at raising their children, they're really good at finding other excuses for their failure. When they all get together, it becomes a self-confirmed consensus that videos games are bad for children. LMFO
- spawnfree, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2These must be the same people that took their kids out of the care bears movie because it featured an evil antagonist.
all members of an evangelical church near solihull, england by the way. - krische, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Yeah, did you actually know that when Elvis came on the Ed McMahon show, they would only film above his waist. They were scared of the way he swung his hips!

- UtopiaInTheSky, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1They clearly never played Mass Effect. Remember that whole circus a few months ago? What a joke. Seriously, I was actually laughing when I watched the news.
- Kingal, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Good article and pretty damn funny, but if you're going to go on a rant basically about people making things up to prove their point and then do pretty much the same thing in the article, that's a problem. Now I know digg loves to hate fox news, but I searched youtube and foxnews.com and couldn't find one negative report from them on gtaIV. Most of them were actually saying how much the game would sell and some even said positive things about the game. One article about games before it was released said "MOST FRUSTRATING DELAYS: If I can't get my hands on blockbusters like "Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots," "Spore" or "Grand Theft Auto IV" soon, I think I'm going to lose it." So why does the author have to use some of his golden rules he's ranting about in his own article?
- ericrous, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Of course. And there was no teen sex before sex education encouraged them.
- coyote1284, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I propose that people from the USA henceforth be called "United Staters" as not to be confused with other people from North and South America. Canadians and Colombians find the term "American" offensive.

/your sarcasm meter should read ~7.4 - antisoc, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Ok, here are a few thoughts on why the anti-videogame lobby will never succeed. Keep in mind that any circular reasoning or poor logical arguments are merely speculation.
1) Smoking is bad for you. It gives you cancer among other things. People know that, and yet they still smoke. Some would argue that people smoke *because* it is bad for you. So what if video games are the same way? The worse they are for you (as purported by the lobbyists) the more people will want to play them.
2) American consumerism > video game lobbyists. There is no way that a few lobbyists in Washington D.C. can hope to overcome the collective might of the American public. If they want games, they will be getting their games.
3) Kids will find a way to buy the games. Keep in mind how many people buy beer for their underage friends. This would work the same way, except that there will never be as harsh of legislation in the video game world. - soundsofreason, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1#11. Throw God into the conversation any chance you can get because as soon as you do, people (especially Americans) will be reminded of the potential eternal damnation and brimstone fire punishments their invisible friend holds over their head.
- Gir53457, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Rock n' Roll, D&D, Rap... There will always be some sort of X Corrupting our youth.
- Ganpachi, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I actually had my wife try and define the term "desensitize" and use it in an applicable situation. I countered that if our daughter didn't have the moral strength to resist firing a rocket launcher into a room full of medics, there was probably more at work than video games.
- coyote1284, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I like to patronize hookers. I go up to one and say, "Aww, you have sex for money."
