- Remmiz, on 06/15/2009, -1/+60This is why I love Valve.
- BladeNd64, on 06/15/2009, -0/+44I'm expecting a wave of night/snow/jungle versions of these maps with clan tags plastered all over them.
It will be useful to the mappers, though. - 33PercentGod, on 06/16/2009, -0/+28I can't believe that Valve is STILL updating TF2. This is how you support a game.
There's no doubt it pays off though. I bet the sales spike through the roof when these new class updates come out. - ripple123, on 06/16/2009, -3/+30hooray! now for 2fort - penis edition!
it has penises. - inactive, on 06/15/2009, -0/+23Hopefully the modding community will continue to use the SDK to great success.
- mu0p, on 06/16/2009, -7/+27And another reason Valve is amazing. Their Tf2 team is almost good enough for me to forget about their L4D team's failboat....almost...
- beelz, on 06/16/2009, -0/+20I <3 Valve. But I still haven't found a dang hat! I guess its a love hate thing.
- ruded0g, on 06/16/2009, -0/+19How this must embarrass all the other so called PC devs who complain about piracy, cant figure out how to support their PC customers and then go on to say, how they make so much more money on the console customer to support, pay any attention, or communicate with the PC customer.
Sorry everyone else fails compared to Valve. I bet the console platform customer wishes they had this much support from a developer/publisher they just gave their hard earned $$ too. - theonlywizdum, on 06/16/2009, -1/+19Since Microsoft charges Valve for the privilege of having their content on the xbox, i'm gunna have to say no to that one.
- evaldasmix, on 06/15/2009, -0/+17Sweet
- thrillhouse900, on 06/16/2009, -3/+17HAhaha, Digg this man up, perfect representation of the TF2 forums.
- ripple123, on 06/16/2009, -2/+16if your feeling neglected as a console player, get a pc.
- Mejogid, on 06/16/2009, -0/+11Yeah, because if there's one thing 2Fort needs it's a few more camping snipers who never move and contribute nothing to the objective //has found the map unplayable since the sniper update
- 00000, on 06/16/2009, -1/+12They are boycotting the l4d team the tf2 team is what valve is all about.
- MessiahEngine, on 06/16/2009, -0/+9Thanks Valve.
After two years, I still play Team Fortress 2 and enjoy it as much as when it was released. These constant updates keep it interesting. - Bigbuttlover, on 06/16/2009, -1/+10Valve owns with a capital OWNS.
- Evi1d33d, on 06/16/2009, -4/+13If the L4D team was working on TF2 then they would've charged $50 for all the class and map updates.
- goldisalie, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8Dude there are still 3 classes which haven't been updated yet. I'm hanging out for the demoman/engineer update myself.
- jasminlecormier, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8Valve has said before that class updates give them a 150% sale surge in average. Thus you are wrong.
- zip000, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7I just started playing TF2 a few weeks ago. Man, is it fun...most of the time.
I've found when you are on a team that doesn't work together it ends up being pretty frustrating. The only way to have fun then is to just not even try to cooperate and just do your own thing. Which still isn't as fun as being on a good cohesive team.
I really wish there was some sort of single player option so that you can learn how to play the game before getting chucked in with everyone else though. I hate being the noob that builds his sentry in the wrong place or the sniper that gets killed within moments of getting in position. - constchar, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7I've used Hammer enough (And I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts in it btw) to say that don't find it so hard to believe that they used Hammer for all their world geometry.
Though that is not excluding the idea that they may have used external tools similar to Nem's Terrain Generator and such.
I'll just say though, in case you don't know, that not everything was made in Hammer because a lot of details you'll see throughout Valve games are actually props created in an external modeler such as SoftImage (which I believe is the official modeling tool for HL2?). - LucasHenderson, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7It still sucks ass that you can't use anything other than Hammer to design the maps. I have entire levels I designed in 3dsMax for other games(Halo CE), but nooo...Hammer can't import them. I wouldn't even care if I could import it fully textured. I'd be happy if it would just let me import the untextured terrain from the maps I've already designed. Going from working with 3dsMax to working with Hammer has been like going from a scalpel to a kitchen knife. Sure, 3dsMax takes a lot more work to learn how to work, but it's much more powerful.
/rant - doshindude, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7They would have just called it TF3.
- MonkeyFit, on 06/16/2009, -1/+7If your power goes out, I'm going to guess your wireless router/modem will also be without power, rendering you without internet anyways. As for getting a PC over a laptop, gaming laptops are more expensive, and really aren't as portable as most conventional laptops, not to mention most people are a little uncomfortable playing video games on laptops due to the hardware layout. Also, your console will also be without power during a power outage.
- m2pt5, on 06/15/2009, -0/+6I've seen a cp_2fort, but it wasn't very good. The points were too spread out (Three per side; one in front of each fort, one in each ramp room, and one in each flag room.) I suspect the map would need a good bit of reworking to be a decent CP map.
- NinjaPirateDude, on 06/16/2009, -0/+6what company makes Steam again?
oh, thats right......................... - deweyhewson, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5Valve is so awesome, look how they support their games! Now, about the aptly titled Left 4 Dead...
Oh, wait... - aeck, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5Good point. I stand corrected.
- Jektal, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5Yeah... not the same.
- TheInimitable, on 06/16/2009, -3/+8I don't want to sound ungrateful or anything but WHERE IS MY FULL L4D SDK
- aeck, on 06/16/2009, -2/+6In comparison, MMORPGs, which requires monthly fees, make players pay for expansion packs.
- MacHarborGuy, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4all that is needed is 5. 1 on bridge, 1 in each teams "courtyard", and one at each teams Intel room.
- KRALock, on 06/15/2009, -1/+5I think I might start up my cp_2fort plan again...
- staulkor, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4Don't be so short sighted. MMO's are different as the company runs all the servers people play on. There is a large overheat when you have to have servers running 24/7 for millions of players. Valve doesnt run any of the servers for TF2 and have no overhead like that.
And anyways, the monthly fees aren't that bad, just don't buy fast food 3 times in a month and hooray, you saved your money for the game. It comes down to how much you enjoy it and if you think $15 a month and the occasional $40 expansion is worth it. - aeck, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4Yeah, I suspect they have some sort of "Hammer Professional Edition". Perhaps to protect 'trade secrets' in the programming?
- Mejogid, on 06/16/2009, -1/+5Learn to detect subtle(ish) sarcasm guys...
- LucasHenderson, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4Also note, I don't mean that 3dsMax would be used for absolutely everything. Back when I made maps for Halo CE, it was a two step process. The map design and texturing would be done in 3dsMax, and the game specific stuff was done in a program called Sapien, which allowed you to place all the stuff like spawn points, flags, trigger areas, vehicles, and related stuff. The 3d design type stuff was left to 3dsmax. With it's numerous key shortcuts, modifiers, and stuff, it is far more adept at that sort of thing.
I dugg this article, cause I am very interested in looking at the actual models of the levels. I still refuse to believe that Valve did all their mapping in Hammer. - YumYumTruck, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3My guess is that the free weekend also has something to do with it. Maybe I'm the only one, but when I was buying the orange box, TF2 was actually the game I was the least interested in (I never actually played half-life before then). However, TF2 is the only game I can really say I'm still playing now. Would I have gotten it sooner if I had tried it first? no doubt, Especially if it was the better game it is today when I first tried it.
- ssj4vegita2002, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3But you just proved that this is the best way to get started. You won't be putting your sentry there any more, and you'll watch yourself more closely as you get in position as a sniper. The best way is to try and fail.
- avatarpalin, on 06/16/2009, -1/+3This will teach me so much on how to make a good maps... hopefully
- centran, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2it would never work well unless you just cut off the whole back area with the current intelligence room. If you did that then it would be one crazy hectic cp map.
- mofro99, on 06/16/2009, -1/+3I think if your in a pub server it shouldnt matter. playing a game should be for fun not winning
- spamzor, on 06/16/2009, -1/+3It's incredible!!!! If you don't understand what they mean it's like releasing ALL the source code for your program. The source files for the maps (which include hundreds+ of hours of work, and will reveal the best design and map building practices!)
- Frostek, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Who buys fast food three times a month anyway?
People who can't cook? Hah! - inactive, on 06/16/2009, -1/+3kk
- Remmiz, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1Actually there are plenty of tools to generate terrain like that and export it as a displacement for easy placement in Hammer. Also, terrain like that isn't that hard to make if you know what to do. You can easily increase the surface area for raising ground, one click would give you a nice hill.
- TimDigg, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1I can't wait to use the spy on the night map....
- LucasHenderson, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1As I said above, it was just an example. The source engine is not intended for just indoors. Take a look at half-life 2, episode 2. As I recall(it's been over a year since I last played), portions of that took place outside, in relatively open areas*. My overall view is that, that most any environment, be it indoors, or outdoors, can be designed faster in programs such as 3dsmax, maya, and others.
But this is all beside my original point. Hammer doesn't allow for one to import terrain, buildings, etc, from these programs. I could argue on and on about why I think 3dsmax is better suited, and you could probably argue the same for Hammer. My original complaint is that Hammer(at least, the public version) doesn't give the designer a choice.

Looking at that terrain, I have a seriously hard time believing that was done with hammer. In 3dsmax or Maya, I could create hills like that in seconds. - Remmiz, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1You really need to get off the idea of Halo maps using Hammer. Halo levels are extremely open and have a lot of terrain. The Source engine is designed for buildings and indoors. While it is possible to make complex terrain using displacements, it's not really what Hammer was intended to be for.
