- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -6/+61No, but it should be.
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+56Is being a prick illegal?
- Opheicus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49There's a difference between North Korea and South Korea.
- spoooon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38Well obviously the video games haven't told us to do that yet. We are, after all, just sheep that can't see the difference between a video game and real life.... right?
/sarcasm - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31I guess being a prick to a judge is frowned upon.
I spoke to the man on the phone once, I asked him why he felt gamers were bad people, he swore at me and hung up. - Providence, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Can I get an AMEN for Take 2?
This guy is such a slimeball. - Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25contempt in court is what i heard.
no caps because i'm typing while on phone with one hand. - Revadarth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I think there's a bit more than boy-on-boy kissing going on in jails. Maybe Mr. Thompson can see how innocent that is compared to an old fashion gang rape.
- alexcurpas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Why did you dig the man down? S. Korea is a nation of gamers so I think it would be pretty funny to send anti-gaming Jack Thompson there. It would be like sending Bush to N. Korea. Well, not really, I be most people there never heard of "Bush"
- Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Why doesn't Jack just try to ban the internet while he's at it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18In the game Bully, here is one of the random lines to come out of a nerd when you are roaming around: "They say kids imitate characters in video games, but I have yet to become a mustached plumber."
- bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"As part of his efforts to halt sales of Bully, Thompson petitioned Miami Judge Ronald Friedman to view the game before it went on sale last week. However, when the judge approved the game for sale, Thompson became angry, accusing the judge of "smiling" as he approved the sale of a game that would inspire teenagers to commit acts of violence as extreme as murder."
I'm not too keen on JT and all this video game violence issue, but it seems like this Thompson guy IS the bully himself... and even sets himself as an example of why violence is bad.
If the anti-violence guy is "violent" himself... why put the blame on video games? - amoirae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14He's just afraid of the stray Bully waiting for him with a bouquet.
- gengisPhat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Jack Thompson is the poster child for "refusing to take responsibility for one's own actions."
The people that go to highschools and shoot them up already have something seriously wrong with them. If it wasn't video games that did it, it would be movies—if it wasn't movies than tv—if not tv than radio. Hell, failing that, let's blame it on... the flying spaghetti monster! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Wait, I think I know what you're talking about:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6079110.stm - JackHallows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Jacko isn't anti-violence. He's anti-Rockstar, anti-Personal Responsibility, and anti-intelligent.
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11My older cousin was a pinball addict back in the day. The teachers at his old school still tell their students the story of how most of the class of '76 were crushed by the gym ceiling after he rolled himself up into a ball and bounced around, crushing all of the building's support pillars one after the other while shouting "ding! ding! ding!'.
- homestar14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11My #1.
People like this need to stop getting podiums to stand on. - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"no caps because i'm typing while on phone with one hand."
And it's easier to write a whole extra sentence than capitalise a couple of letters? :P - LarianLeQuella, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I can't wait to see what the guys at Penny Arcade do with this one. :)
- mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You may not realize how right you are. I remember the first widely reported high-school shooting when I was a little girl. Nobody thought then to blame it on pinball, which was the closest to a video game there was at the time.
- mrpizza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8can you give me one?
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Don't forget comic books and rock & roll.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Legal fees.
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've never thought being a prick should put someone in jail.
Maybe being a prick to such an extreme degree, that should put him in jail. - StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Revadarth, it's actually pretty much unheard of. The demographic in jail still skews largely towards "redneck racist sexist pig", and gay-bashing is pretty common.
I don't know for sure, but I think contempt of court would get one sent to a county jail, rather than a penitentiary. Sodomy is also pretty nonexistant there.
/Curbing "buttsex in jail" jokes one at a time. - garnaralf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Well, if they shoot him in the head, they must be a gamer or a hit man.
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Take2 needs to have a way for us to assist in this.. or something.
I'd love to bring him down. I hope Penny-Arcade helps.. - JaytB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This must be the most satisfying Jack Thompson article I've read to date!
Definitely dugg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Why doesn't Jack just try to ban the internet while he's at it."
Shhh! Don't give him ideas!
You think I'm kidding? You think a lawyer has better things to do than hang out on forums and engage in petty bickering contests with 12 year olds? You don't know Jack! - genforklift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh the irony, the delicious irony.
Good luck Rockstar - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Rockstar Games is on a roll. Table Tennis for XBOX 360 is doing very well in sales and Bully was just released to great reviews (1UP.com gave it 10/10). GTA: Vice City Stories will get near perfect scores in one week, and then GTA IV is on the horizon for 2007. Jack Thompson will never "destroy" Rockstar as he once said he wanted to. Bring it on Jack.
I've been running a large-scale GTA fan site for almost five years, and this just tickles me to death. - SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I can think of a lot of things people would rather do to him, but that would just "prove him right"... ***** that. If you've ever watched Fight Club, you know what I'm talking about.
Rubber band. - Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They can get him for slander for sure, whether or not jail time will follow is to see, but a civil lawsuit is definitely in order. If someone went on National TV and told everyone you were making a game about Al Quedia flying planes into the WTC because it was named "Flight 187", but than when the game was released it was actually about something entirely different, you can definitely get them for it.
- stonedgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Get him any way you can Rockstar
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No, but wasting everyone's time and money is.
- Drahkar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4'If this court in any fashion proceeds toward issuing a show cause order, given its utter baselessness and the bad faith goo in which it slithers,'
I wonder if Jack Thompson has forgotten that insulting the Judge or the court is a perfectly legitimate reason for being found in contempt....? - justoman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Get him get him get him!
- conna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If he was in contempt, the judge should have done something about it then. Anything after that is just a tantrum played out by the lawyers..
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I have no interest in this game. That being said, I will be buying two copies. Just to piss Thompson off.
- babylonian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"perhaps the fact that people react like this is part of the reason that some individuals continue to attack the gaming industry"
Wait, so you're saying that people attack the industry because of the way gamers react to...people attacking the industry?
Paradox. - Ollin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3All I gotta say is.........GOT EM COACH :D
- destructoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just came back from the Trial. The judge recused himself and filed a complaint to the Florida Bar Association. That's not to say he's not going to jail, but that's going to be for another judge to decide.
http://www.destructoid.com/is-jack-going-to-jail-1-hour-from-now
Also notable, Judge Friedman and Jack Thompson are going head to head in elections for Judge in 2008. You can't help but wonder if the outcome of this was a cautious political play by the judge. Hard to say, but there is an element of that. - crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why? This guy is an ***** and needs to be stopped.
It would be nice if they at least took away his ability to be a lawyer. - piper999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@edrift
"Anyone got any good Jack Thompson jokes?"
The one where he gets sent to jail for contempt of court is a good one. - sulthernao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They want him to go to jail? Easy...
Make him play GTA, then according to him, he will become a serial killer.
Duh... - spoooon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@babylonian
Makes you think doesn't it? This does seem to be the case since the individuals attacking the game industry want and achieve their soapbox to stand on when gamers become upset and lash out... - tombomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I guess the old addage applies here:
"Fight fire with fire"
If jack wants to use the legal system to hurt Take-Two Interactive, Why not use the same tactic against him? - cprincipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the Take-Two law firm is brilliant.
Every comment that Thompson makes after the motion to compel has been filed digs him deeper and deeper into a hole of clear contempt for the court. When Thompson has to appear, he will be so far in the whole that the judge will be totally comfortable finding him in contempt. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the way Thompson threatens all US judges in his mail. Classy & smart.
